Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star is out this summer

Shabazz Palaces have announced a new album. It’s called Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star, and it’s out July 14 via Sub Pop. The group have also shared a lyric video for a new song, “Shine a Light (feat. Thaddillac),” directed by Cristina T. Bercovitz and Jonathan Snipes of clipping. Watch it below. The new album is set to feature the Strokes’ Julian Casblanacas, Thundercat, Gamble and Huff, and more. According to a press release, the album tells the story of a “sentient being from somewhere else” named Quazarz. In a statement about the persona, Ishmael Butler a.k.a. Palaceer Lazaro writes:

Quazarz, Born On A Gangster Star, son only of Barbara Dream Caster and Reginald The Dark Hoper - he who rides on light - dreamer of the seventh dream and kissed eternal by Awet the Sun Scented - who far from home I found my same self differents in those constellies that be Dai at my weap-side immediate and all us Water Guild affiliates who revelries in the futures passed recordings and ceremonies  flexing resplendent  in the Paradise Sportif armor -  raising these musics a joy/cry that way into these aquadescentdiamondized ethers of the Migosphere here on Drake world. Last month, Shabazz Palaces announced a new album called Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star, due out July 14 via Sub Pop. Now, they’ve announced another album to be released that same day. This one is called Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines and, like its “extra-spatial twin” record, it tells the story of Quazarz, a “sentient being from somewhere else.” According to a press release, Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines “finds our protagonist with his dazzling cohorts rising a collective Nah to the device and the guilds that proliferate them.” Below, watch the music video (directed by Cristina T. Bercovitz and clipping.’s Jonathan Snipes) for a new song from the record, “30 Clip Extension.” Scroll down for the Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines tracklist (which includes a song called “Love in the time of Kanye”) and artwork.

The Secret Decoder site did a very nice review of our new film. Really happy they took some time mention the film-makers Cristina Bercovitz and Benjamin Shearn as well. Without their help, this film would not exist nor look as amazing.

Overseen and conducted by a towering neon-faced skeleton, their is something intensely tribal about True Neutral Crew’s latest live incarnation, documented here by Cristina Bercovitz in what appears to be the experimental hip hop band’s practice space. As various members – including Signor Benedick the Moor, Margot Padilla, Brian Kinsman and Daveed Diggs – drift in and out of the smoke, they act as though possessed by the cloaked cadaver, seemingly multiplying in number as they whirl and prance around its feet. Songs are culled from TNC’s #POPPUNK and #MONSANTO, as well as Signor Benedick’s solo tape sbthemoor, meaning there’s a healthy balance of knowingly goofy pop (“Modern Art”, “H8 Everybody”) and frenzied rap (“New Shit”, “Monsanto”), all of which is interspersed by the skeleton’s own brand of eerie back-lit ambiance. The editing, handled expertly by Benjamin Shearn, clips back and forth, slamming angles together in a way that unsettles the viewer to the point of confusion – shirts are stripped off only to reappear again seconds later, and band members come and go in similarly spectral fashion. The show concludes with Signor Benedick battling manically against his inner demon, here represented by a disembodied head that emerges from the wall stage right. Thrilling, visceral and unsettling, Live showcases an act at the peak of their powers and deserves to lead to bookings nation- if not world-wide.
