Broncos Regular Season Week 11
Hawk Valley
Quick Review
The Broncos lost to the Raiders 37-12.
A longer review
The Broncos ran backwards on the opening kickoff return and things did not improve for the Broncos after that. The first Bronco drive of the game was to start on their four yard line, but wait, there was a flag on the play! The penalty was on Denver and the ball was moved back to the two yard line. Drew Lock's first pass of the game fell incomplete. Gordon picked up four yards on second down, but he injured his ankle on the play. On third down, Lock completed a pass to Freeman for a one yard gain. The Bronco's first punt of the game came 90 seconds after the game started.
The Raiders returned the Bronco punt to the Denver Bronco 28 yard line. The Raiders were flagged for holding on the play, so they started their drive from the Bronco 38 yard line. The first two runs of the game for the Raiders gained 5 yards. On third down, the Raiders completed a pass for a first down. The next two Raiders plays gained 12 yards. After a quarterback scramble for 9 yards and an 11 yard run, the Raiders were in the end zone with about 9:50 left in the quarter.
Fant caught a pass for 9 yards on first down. Lindsay ran for two yards on second down. Lock completed a pass to Patrick for 13 yards on first down. Then Lock connected with Jeudy for 17 yards. Lock then tried his luck with a pass to the end zone...the pass fell incomplete. On second down Lindsay gained nothing. On third down, Lock targeted Hamilton with another incomplete pass. On fourth down, the Broncos kicked a 50 yard field goal. The Raiders led at this point, 7-3. Oddly, the Bronco flag ship radio station, KOA, lost their signal during this drive and had to broadcast from their cell phone.
The Broncos defense held the Raiders offense to a three and out. On the Raiders punt, the Broncos ran into their own punt returner. Gordon was back in the game and gained three yards on first down. Fant caught a pass for no gain on second down. On third and 7, Hamler caught a pass for a first down. Gordon gained 8 yards on the next play. Two running plays in a row gained enough yards for a first down. Lindsay came back into the game and lost four yards. Lock followed that up with an incomplete pass and an interception on third down. The Raiders gained eight yards before the first quarter ended.
The Raiders decided to go for it on fourth down on the first play of the second quarter. They were called for holding and Denver accepted the penalty, so the Raiders punted. The broadcasting team then displayed a graphic of the average starting field position. The Raiders were starting from their 41, the Broncos, their own 10. The Broncos next drive started from their own 2 yard line. Gordon gained 3 yards on first down. On second down, Gordon gained 6 yards. On third down, Lock was sacked and he fumbled, but he recovered his own fumble. The Broncos punted with 12:24 left in the half.
The Raiders returned the Bronco punt for a 60 yard touchdown. Luckily for the Broncos, the Raiders were flagged for a blindside block, erasing the touchdown. This Raider drive lasted about 45 seconds and then they punted. On their first play of the drive, Denver was flagged for a false start. After the penalty, Lock threw an incomplete pass to Lindsay. On second down, Lock threw another incomplete pass and he was nailed as he threw it. On the next play, Jeudy moved the ball to mid-field. Then Lock found Patrick and he moved the ball to the 22 yard line. The Broncos then gained 8 yards on three plays and settled for a 33 yard field goal. The game was still close at this time, 7-6 Las Vegas.
The Raiders took over at the 8:10 mark. It took them four minutes to reach mid-filed. The Raiders then gained 48 yards while running the clock down to the two minute warning. The Broncos defense stepped up and held the Raiders to a 24 yard field goal.
On first down, Fant gained 9 yards. Lock picked up the first down on third down, with a quarterback sneak. On first down, with 1:14 left in the half, Lock threw the ball away. On second down, Hamler picked up a first down. With 59 seconds left, Gordon ran right for no gain. On second down, Lock threw the ball away. On third down, Lock found Patrick for a first down with 30 seconds left. Patrick gained 14 yards on the play and the Raiders were penalized for 15. Patrick gained 6 yards with 22 seconds left on first down. On second down, Lock scrambled into the end zone, but there was a flag on the play. Fant was called for holding with 18 seconds left. On the very next play, Lock was intercepted. The Raiders took over and took a knee to end the half. The score at half time was Las Vegas 10, the Broncos 6.
The Raiders took the kickoff and ran five minutes off the clock before kicking a 52 yard field goal. On this drive they earned 5 first downs. They could have scored a touchdown, but their wide receiver dropped the ball even though he was wide open. This didn't set the Raiders back, because two plays later, they completed a pass for a 25 yard gain. Right after that play, Chubb tackled their back for a five yard loss. On second down, Carr threw the ball away. On third down, Carr completed a pass for no gain. They kicked a 52 yard field goal.
The Bronco's offense lost three yards on a carry by Gordon on first down. The Broncos picked two of those yards up on second down. On third down, Lock threw another incomplete pass and then they punted.
The Raiders ran to the left for a first down, on first down. On the next first down, they ran up the middle for two yards. On second down, the Denver D sacked their quarterback, but Denver was flagged for holding. On first down, they ran for 6 yards. With 5:25 left in the quarter, the Raiders completed a pass for a 22 yard gain. On first down, they ran up the middle for 9 yards. The Raiders had the ball on the 13 yard line at the 3:30 mark. The next two Raider plays basically offset. They were called for holding on second down, but gained 13 yards on the next play. With 42 seconds left, the Raider running back ran to the left and into the end zone. The Raiders now led 20-6.
Lindsay gained 3 yards to end the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lock threw an interception. On second and 9, a completed pass moved the ball down to the 5 yard line. On third and three, Carr threw the ball away. On fourth down, the Raiders kicked a 22 yard field goal.
After two incomplete passes by Lock, there were multiple flags thrown on his next incomplete pass. Holding was called on the Raiders and a personal foul was called on Patrick. At the 13 minute mark, Patrick was ejected from the game for throwing a punch. When they tried to play third down, even more flags were thrown. This third down play might have taken 20 real minutes of time, if not longer. Finally, Lock threw another incomplete pass and the down counted. No flags were thrown, and then Denver punted. The next Raider drive ran two minutes off the clock before they punted.
The Broncos had the ball on the 9 yard line. Lock completed a pass to Hamilton who fumbled. The Raiders ran the ball right up the middle for another touchdown on first down. At this point, the Raiders led 30-6.
The Broncos next drive got off to a good start with a pass completion for a 7 yard gain. A toss to Hamilton picked up another 11 yards. On first down, Lock threw another incomplete pass, but the Raiders were flagged for unnecessary roughness. Gordon ran for a first down on first down. After two incomplete passes, Lock found Hamilton who moved the ball down to the 18 yard line. After one first down pick up and two more incomplete passes, Lock was sacked on third down. On fourth and goal, Lock connected with Hamilton for a touchdown. The Broncos tried a two point conversion, but it failed. The onside kick also failed. With 3:20 left in the game, the Raiders had the ball on the Broncos 25 yard line. On first down, the Raiders ran to the left for two yards. The Raiders ran the clock down to the two minute warning. On second and 8, the Raiders running back ran up the middle for 23 yards and another touchdown. The Raiders were done scoring for the day.
The final Bronco drive started with 1:54 left. The first play was a run by Freeman for 9 yards. On second down, Jeudy gained 9 yards before falling down. On first down Freeman gained two yards. After another incomplete pass and a first down, Lock connected with Jeudy for a 16 yard gain. On first down, Lock threw another interception. The Raiders then entered victory formation with 18 seconds left on the clock. The Raiders beat the Broncos 37-12.

During the week
The Raiders tested positive for Covid after playing the Broncos.
Watching the Broncos was described as a chore on sports talk radio. Unofficially, the countdown to the end of the season has started.
Several members of the media want the Broncos to stick with Lock for the rest of the season and they're hoping the Broncos don't make any changes to the starting lineup. I'm guessing this is because angry people call in more? There were a few members that said Lock should be benched. On Monday, Lock was diagnosed with a strained muscle or sore ribs.
The Broncos announced on Friday, that this is the last home game of the season that fans will be allowed to attend. With Covid running wild in Colorado this move makes sense. A skeptical person might say the Broncos are kicking the fans out of the stadium because they're expected to, if everything goes well, win two games on their remaining schedule and the Broncos don't want to hear from the boo birds.

A Quick look at Drew Lock
Drew Lock took over the starting quarterback duties for the Denver Broncos in 2019 when Joe Flacco was injured. In 2020, Drew Lock missed two games due to a shoulder injury (weeks 3,4). The Broncos lost in week 3 with Driskel, but won in week 4 with Rypien. Drew Lock came back in week 5 and the Broncos beat the Patriots by kicking six field goals. Under Lock, the offense has averaged 20 points per game with him as a starter. The defense has allowed 28 points per game during this time and the Broncos record under Lock is 2-5. During the last month, the offense under Lock is averaging 22 points per game. The defense is giving up 36 points per game. Over the last two weeks, the offense is averaging 20 points per game. The defense is giving up 36 points per game. The only two teams with a worse defensive showing over the last two weeks are the Bengals and the Panthers. The Bengals gave up 36 points per game, the Panthers 40. Both the Bengals and Broncos look the same, but that's due to rounding. The Broncos defense gave up 35.5 points per game, the Bengals an even 36. The Panthers are one of the future games on the schedule that Bronco fans think the Broncos could win, but the Panthers have an offense. They are averaging one touchdown better than the Broncos over this period of time. Sure Drew Lock is a problem, but maybe everyone should look at the defense. Vic Fangio's NFL fame came from being a defensive coordinator, but he's not doing a great job with the Broncos defense. Perhaps Vic's greatest trick in 2020 was shifting the blame for the Broncos poor performance from the defense to the offense.
