Thinking a lot lately on the ways in which Scully is her father's daughter and the ways that might have affected both her approach to work and her mother's approach to Mulder... she is born to be a first mate, a comrade-in-arms, she takes duty and loyalty so seriously... Maggie sees in Mulder not just a guy that's hyper-devoted to her daughter, but a shipmate, someone belonging to the same crew, someone who will not leave one of his own behind, regardless of whatever else may or may not be going on. Scully will live and die for him and he will stand by her no matter what because that is the natural order of things, a crew relies on each other for their survival, they are a family at sea completely separate from their families at home, and they will always be up in each other's business and have a certain claim to each other. It doesn't trump family but it isn't entirely subordinate either. It's only proper, even if the crew is only two.

X-files s01e11 EVE

First of all: Twin clone psychic girls? 100% scary. Just right away a winner. Shining-vibe and everything. Psychic powers, secret government experiments, mental hospital-prisons. All great! Some genuine tense moments. The ending could have gone a lot of other ways. All good. And we see some of Scully being moved by children. And the image of them buying sodas with the girls is so good. This is them in some alternate reality, just another happy family.

But that’s the thing maybe. There can be no happy families in the X-Files. For a little while, maybe, at most. Then it’ll turn to horror or sadness. It’s almost always families being broken apart most episodes, I mean. The episodic thing. Look at these people here, having life torn asunder. And then Mulder having his trauma, and Scully her always unfulfilled hopes.

A really good episode.

Mia Mulder's dad (replaced at one point by the T-1000 guy) and that Englishwoman who is not actually Julianne Moore are in the FBI and investigate weird happenings. Also there's an overarching plot involving a man who smokes and thinks he's Deep Throat from All the President's Men. See, clear as mud!
