"But," his voice broke, everything crashing down as he tried to force his brain to come up with an argument.

"Midoriya Izuku will be your first hit," his father sounded almost happy about it, like this was some kind of honour.

Comments from the writer, Kori:  The initial premise for my story was pretty open-ended, and only solidified once I started writing it out. It is thanks to my partner, who not only pinch-hitted but also put so much effort into a detailed drawing, and my guild's very understanding mod, that I was motivated to continue and fill in the descriptions throughout my fic. It was immensely satisfying to see the plot threads coming together, and I hope you enjoy!

Midoriya looked like a god of spring, slight and carefree, his head wreathed in miniature suns. Shouto's fingers twitched with a sudden urge to run his fingers through Midoriya’s bottle-green hair, and his body tensed in alarm. Shouto pictured himself gathering the shorter boy into his arms, and pressing his face into those sun-warmed freckles until Midoriya was giggling uncontrollably. The bright, infectious sound echoed in his head. Abruptly, Shouto's face shut down as those strange emotions flooding his body were boxed away in confusion. He had never felt that before (to his knowledge), and those thoughts were unnecessary for their outing. The only evidence of his shock was a rapidly beating heart and a rosy tint to his cheeks.

And the world exploded.

It was something so entirely new, breathtaking and ethereal, that Todoroki couldn't help but stare endlessly at the spectacle on his left arm.

He had always hated his flames because they had always looked so dull and felt so frigid. They were limp and ragged, tinted the same boring grey Todoroki had known his whole life. And fire was supposed to be hot, yet to Todoroki, it was colder than any ice he could ever produce.

But now, now the fire seemed to dance, so vibrant and bursting with energy. It wasn’t just any dance, it was its own, its own rhythm, its own style, its own heartbeat. There was nothing else quite like it, nothing else could even come close to comparing itself to it. The grey had drained away, and now there was only something that Todoroki could only describe as life.

“I,” he says, sounding choked even to his own ears. It makes him feel weak, the idea of admitting that he is truly alone in a sea full of people who all have someone.

“Hm?” Midoriya asks, looking up at Shouto curiously when he doesn’t continue.

“I don’t,” Shouto grits out, “have anyone waiting for me.”

He almost spins around and runs, embarrassment coloring his face. He feels queasy, like they know he doesn’t belong here, amongst all the greatest future heroes in Japan. With his disfigured face and his powerless body, his hands that can’t do what they’re supposed to. And here he is, practically begging his new acquaintances for a scrap to eat, metaphorically speaking. The silence stretches on for far too long for his liking, yet only a few seconds have passed before Midoriya says “Oh!” and smiles so wide it has to hurt.

“Then eat with us today, Todoroki-kun!” Uraraka says, like it’s just that simple.

And there stands Izuku, in all of his tee-shirted and cargo-shorted glory. Shouto arises from his seat and meets Izuku in the front. “Good morning!” The coffee in his hands begins to spill down the side. “I-I realized I didn’t know the kind you liked, so I just took a guess and brought a bunch of sugar and creamer,” Izuku says sheepishly, holding out the coffee. It smells like a house blend, so he immediately takes a drink of it. Izuku frantically waves his arms, warning him it was still hot— Shouto still burns his tongue on it. He doesn’t react though. “It’s good by itself,” he says, “Thank you.” And Izuku looks at him like he just ate an entire unboiled egg in one bite. “Want to go look at some books?” Shouto pushes forward, and Izuku stirs from his stupor.

Tensei’s eyes connect with Masaki’s before flying down to where their hands are connected. It feels...warm. It feels real. Holding hands with a cute guy, ha. Maybe the therapist was right, and life really could go on. Masaki squeezes his hand and repeats the question, and Tensei feels a wave of embarrassment.

Right. Masaki’s just a good guy. A good guy who is worried about him, and Tensei’s busy having teenage fantasies about the poor sap. Tensei pulls his hand away and rubs his neck ruefully, cheeks flaming at his reaction to such a small, innocent kindness. He tries to play it off.

“Sorry, I’m fine. I was just-- remembering something.”

Hello, my name is Kyoka Jirou, and if you are reading this, I am dead.

Well, it was a bit dramatic of a beginning, but it was true. She might as well start with the truth, since that was all this was going to be.

Today I have fought a difficult battle, and I almost lost my life. I know many good heroes did lose their lives today, and I am filled with regret at not being able to get to know them. Right before my life was saved by an honorable hero who is now gone, I looked back on my life for a moment and realized that many people may not know the truth about some things, and I do not want there to be rumors and lies filling the time after my death like I know there will be now that the true identities of some of these heroes are being released.
