Lachesis holding Wren, a very tiny baby clone

so i had this little side story/arc that involved Sunny finding and adopting a very small (possibly premature) mantis clone

she names it Wren because its so tiny

of course Hal's like 'thats going to grow into an adult man someday you know that right...? you can't just *adopt* it like a kitten'

and Sunny just gives him the puppy eyes until Hal's just like 'fine, i guess im raising a baby psychic now'

but any way Lachesis is the only one of the two original clones that ends up joining Vesper in his compound, as he is very agoraphobic and mostly blind, so he never left the facility he was born in even though it was long abandoned and crumbling

Vesper ended up taking him in after he found Lachesis, as he was ill and emaciated due to running out of supplies

while Lachesis was recovering in Vesper's compound, Vesper would become aware of the clone Sunny had found

Wren was weak and on the verge of dying after being rescued, so Vesper got in contact with Hal to see the clone they found

They brought Wren to the compound and Wren had stopped breathing

Lachesis left his room for the first time since arriving there, taking Wren in his hands

Lachesis reunited Wren's soul with his body, effectively bringing the little guy back to life

i have more lore on Lachesis to extrapolate but this post is already too long

tl;dr baby clone technically dies, Lachesis brings him back

the main surviving clones created in the Novosibirsk facility, by Russia's best scientists.

Shatterglass and Lachesis were the first, followed by Brood 1 (not shown, mostly failures or terminations). Brood 0 and Brood 1 are both produced in '85, shortly after kid Mantis' escape.

Brood 2 only had two survivors, Enki and Zee. The others in this brood were either culls (powerless) or used as lab rats. Brood 2 was produced in '88.

There were 2 or 3 other broods that were primarily failures, terminations, or used as lab rats. Some of the culls from these broods were adopted out into military facilities for training in other areas instead of killing them.

The last brood created in the Novosibirsk facility was the Dread Brood, which resulted in the birth of Vesper, the Dread Mantis. Niko was created as a stopgap, in case Vesper failed to live up to expectations. Produced post-2005, after recovering Mantis' remains.

quick and shitty line and color of Lachesis

trying to work out Lachesis' and Shatterglass' designs. i think i like Lachesis but I want to work on Shatterglass some more...he doesn't seem quite right.

context:

Lachesis and Shatterglass are the first pair of clones, made from genetic material obtained from Mantis as a kid during the 80's.

Lachesis is blind, possibly slight Marfan's syndrome, mild form of gigantism and albino. He's quiet and reserved, kind of fragile, and he navigates through his mind's eye (like idk. psychic echolocation or smth). He is unique for his ability to heal wounds and even bring someone back to life, provided they haven't been dead too long.

The only thing I have solid for Shatterglass at the moment is that he is good at...well, shattering glass and using it as a weapon. He can also create glass itself from sand and use it as defense or offense. I see him as boisterous, kinda rude, and a bit violent. He is the one who helps orchestrate Vesper's escape from the Novosibirsk facility.

Something crossed my mind last night

The possibility of every Mantis clone having red hair is next to none

buckle up because I'm about to go autistic here

so in order for red hair to express in a child, they have to receive a copy of the gene from each of their parents

problem is, the gene for red hair is recessive, so if one parent throws a dominant gene, the red hair will not express even if the child carries the gene for it

Mantis has red hair, so that means he has two copies of the recessive gene so he will always throw the recessive gene

however, if the egg cell they use for the clone doesn't carry the gene for red hair, the clone will not express red hair (will likely be dark haired)

if the egg cell they use carries the red hair gene but also has a dominant gene, then the egg cell will have to throw the recessive red hair gene instead of the dominant

so there's only a small chance that the clone will receive a recessive gene from its "mother"

as the researchers are engineering these clones for ability, not looks, it's almost statistically impossible for every clone to have red hair

it also raises the fact that these researchers have unrelated female psychics that they're harvesting egg cells from, which feels Highly Unethical but considering the clones are considered 'assets' and not people so they don't have to worry about those pesky human rights, it tracks

also, the fact that both Vesper and Niko have red hair means that the researchers used the same 'mother' for both of them, making them full-blood brothers 🥺

so ive been doing a little thinking

i decided i wanted my mantis clone au to have an opponent faction, a set of clones created from a different facility that are. incredibly imperfect and aging at an alarming rate

and my mind latched on to a sort of Hell Priest/Cenobite type of design for them (think Hellraiser)

they are after Mantis' remains (most specifically, his head) out of a misled belief that giving themselves gene therapy using Mantis' remains will help extend their lifespans

i see them kind of revering Mantis almost like a god, believing that psychics should subjugate the inferior normal humans

in the meantime, they start playing god with their own genetics, trying to create clones from themselves (which only results in Fucked Up Results), in another attempt to create more bodies to help find their progenitor's remains

one of the results of this are the Juggernauts, massive clones that are warped beyond belief and have their own abilities, but since they grow so damn fast their minds are still very young

so you have these massive hulking monstrosities with childlike minds, who are more than likely in horrendous pain

anywho, these guys start becoming antagonistic when they realize that Vesper is rescuing clones and destroying whatever parts of Mantis he finds, to prevent them from being used again

by Vesper destroying the very remains they're trying so desperately to find, this sparks them to turn the Juggernauts loose and attempt to stop Vesper's progress

I haven't talked about my mantis clone au in a bit so uh here

Its known that Vesper rescues and takes in/rehabilitates the clones he finds, while schooling them and training them to control their abilities

I also feel like he'd be working with other organizations so no one would see them as a threat

I feel like he'd also sort of work with military organizations on the grounds that Vesper determines what they do with the clones and how, as Vesper is trying to keep them safe from being exploited. However, making sure these organizations are aware of them and how he is raising/training them (and the boundaries he puts down) seems to help their cause, as Vesper is being transparent (though he never reveals that they are all clones of Mantis, he just passes them off as orphans or his own brothers).

Which leads to the next part of this au, as Meryl is the one who's sent to audit Vesper's operation to makes sure everything is up to snuff. Something seems familiar about Vesper and the kids but she can't quite place it, at least until one of them nudges at her mind to speak to her (Vesper admonishes him, telling him to mind his manners)

Meryl quickly puts the pieces together that they are clones, just as Snake was. She's a little apprehensive but quickly realizes that they're just little guys who like snacks and uppies and want to show her the monster truck dinosaurs they drew

I feel like she decides to keep Vesper's secret, and I feel like they do eventually get a little close (platonically of course, Vesper has no interest in that kind of stuff) and actually helps Meryl work through her PTSD regarding psychic abilities

this was all over the place but my brains not really braining and hopefully it all makes sense ><

I decided to name this au "peculiar", and it will be in the tags from here on out if anyone wants to follow them
