Humans have a horrifying way of making war. A war of humanity against humanity is horrifying.

These people have no mage-priests, only clergy and the occasional harvest witch. Potions make up some of the gap but there are too few, too few, and must be reserved for those who can drink and return to the fight. The more grievously injured must make do with bandages and crude surgery bereft of magic.

Here is a man who will never fight again, a knight’s sword cleaving his hand from his wrist with no one to reattach it. There is a woman who will be forever hobbled, leg crushed beneath steelshod hooves of knights pledged to defend the innocent of the realm who now trample them underfoot. Both of them and more would be made whole if humans did not waste their only proper healers on sermons and confession.

These thoughts consume Jaira Dawnstrider as she stands amidst the sulphurous stench of gunsmoke, hearing the screams of dying men. She came here to leverage a civil war to her people’s benefit, but more and more she finds herself becoming the mask: A partisan for peace between man and elf, who would see the old alliance restored. This new model army of hers is too valiant to be a simple tool, standing by their posts no matter what comes—A thin russet streak tipped with steel, bayonets ready as armored knights crash into them again and again. For hours they have held the guns, and for hours the Parliamentarians have sought to take them.

She came here because a House of Commons might be more receptive to Thalassian peace terms. She stays because this cause is righteous, hallowed by the blood of the fallen, and because this is the only future for her people.

As with Arathor, so with Stormwind.
