Napoleon Solo Headcanons: Early Life Edition

Based on things that he says in the show and that people say about him ('You don't exactly rate with Dun and Bradstreet', thanks, Illya), I'm interested in Napoleon's relationship to and experience with money. In my imagination, his family was initially well off, but overextended in the stock market and lost nearly everything in the crash. So, Napoleon would have been born solidly into the Great Depression and spent his earliest years in a family that was a) broke and b) desperately holding on to a veneer of prosperity. Mix in to taste the interpersonal conflict, blame, and shame that occur in a family experiencing a sudden financial setback.

I expect that they eventually clawed their way back to stability as the US economy rebounded in the 40's and 50's, but also that their experience left some cracks that could not be papered over. Young Napoleon would have learned the importance of keeping up appearances, been used to adults hiding things from him, and gotten good practice in hiding things from others. In his chosen profession, he is well served by his persistent ability to maintain a vague illusion of glamour under all circumstances.

The Domestic Bliss Affair

(so I guess I got rid of this, sks, here it is again for my beloved fellow Cousins in the world.)

They have only just closed the door, walked into the hallway of their home for the evening when- “Папочка! Папочка!” A small, blonde headed girl comes racing around the corner; directly towards Napoleon. Who of course, instantly scoops her up into his arms; laughing heartily. “Привет, Esfir.” Illya is beaming at the sight of them, inside and out, but affects a hurtful pout. “And what, nothing for me?” “Of course for you, Батя!” She squeaks and impatiently wiggles her tiny hands for him. He warmly chuckles, and embraces her; giving their sweet girl a peck on the cheek. “You are learning very well, рыбочка.” The Russian agent whispers to her. Somewhere along the line, Napoleon has snuck his arm around Illya and is now leaning to cuddle with both husband and child.

This… contentment, it seems so unreal at times; the darker haired spy still can’t quite believe it’s something that belongs to him. Seeming to sense his thoughts, Illya comes in to kiss him. Deep, but ever so soft. “Это реально, мой дорогой. Now, and always. I promise, Napoliosha.” Then he feels something suddenly pulling on his pant leg, and looks downwards. “Ah, and speaking of real…” “Hi, daddy! I’ve been waiting for you to come home for so long. Did you have a good day at work? Is that a new tie? It looks great on you.” The little black haired boy currently vibrating with excitment, and an enormous smile then glaces at his Russian father through his lashes. “Daddy… Remember you promised you were going to let me pick a kitten?” The laughter that erupts from his chest… With his arms now occupied with their daughter, it’s Napoleon who pries their son off of Illya. “He has also been learning very well…” Illya shakes his head, though still chortling and widely grinning. “I have no idea what you could possibly be referring to, Mister Kuryakin-Solo…” The American replies with a faux huff of offense, pouting as he strokes the boy’s hair. “And hello to you too, Xander, by the way… I had a very good evening at work, in case you were interested to know.” He giggles, looking rather contrite and hugging his father’s face. “Sorry, pop. Hello! And of course I wanna know! Tell me all about it?”

Illya and Napoleon look directly at each other, then with a glow in each of their eyes; linking their hands together. They have each other, a cozy home, and two truly wonderful children. Life, could not be sweeter.

I have long headcanoned that Illya is a black coffee drinker while Napoleon gets stuff like flavored lattes. Well, this rather boring (and very straight) meme appeared on my Instagram today.

I started a Sean Connery James Bond movie and he’s like if Napoleon Solo actually had sex with woman.

I know Napoleon Solo is based off James Bond mostly the “handsome womanizer” part of him but I watched MFU before James Bond and they kinda missed with the “womanizer” aspect of his character and just created a good spy who doesn’t have sex with woman and instead is hopelessly in love with his male partner.

Also interesting because I can tell where they got some of the things they added to Napoleons character in the movie. Movie Napoleon is closer to James Bond than TV Napoleon but both seem a lot fruitier than Bond entirely because Illya is Napoleons partner and they’re in love.

Disclaimer:

As you can see from the data attributes, the mfu and gfu stats have been compiled by two different people. As such, results should be taken with a grain of salt as our views on what exactly constitutes 'torture' or a 'failed escape' may vary.

A word on graphs:

I felt that having compiling the separate info in one place in the form of bar charts was ideal for visual comparisons of the data, rather than jumping between posts. However, I cannot recommend enough commander-kiranerys's original graphs enough due to them being in the form of line graphs, thus giving a good view of change over time for the individual results of her statistics. This was not possible here due to gfu being part of a separate show.

Analysis:

Tied up: so if you're into bondage then MFU Season 3 is for you. Specifically Illya... (I see you Season 3 writers, I see you). As you can see from these graphs and the next two, the GFU villains weren't really very kinky. A shame tbh (who said that?).

Chained or handcuffed: I had combined these two separate categories into just the one in my data set and so I added together commander-kiranerys' results to create some compatible data. The MFU stats here remain very consistent before that good ol' Season 4 drop, they didn't get that same significant increase that being tied up saw.

Tortured: sad to see that Napoleon and Illya have never been tortured together. As the old saying goes, partners who get tortured together, stay together. Very tragic.

Drugged: a lot of the cynics out there will say that it's no surprise at all that GFU was on the most drugs of the series. But to that I say, just look at that MFU Season 3 stat! The least by a long shot!

Knocked out: the most impressive thing here is that if you removed all of April's stats, GFU would still be leading on getting knocked out. I'm more than a little worried about Mark; has anyone checked him for post-concussion syndrome?

Shot: my findings? Bullet wound Mark is an outlier and should not be counted. He is one gunshot away in his single series from equalling Illya in the entire run of MFU. The consistency of those MFU results is very satisfying to me, and then Mark has to ruin it! Someone get this man a touriquet or smth idc. Also April is bullet proof, aparently.

Wet: although I was too British and prude to tally-up instances of partial nudity (idk why I found that too embarrassing ok), I am not imune to fanservice and was more than happy to count instances of getting wet. Now, if you like your agents soaking wet, then aparently GFU is the show for you (yes this is a propaganda post). Though on average it ties with MFU Season 4; in terms of raw numbers it cannot be beat. Interestingly though, Season 1 Napoleon is tied with Mark for soggiest individual character.

I will freely admit that the analysis here is strongly skewed towards comparing the GFU results with the MFU results. Mainly due to commander-kiranerys having already created a set of graphs and gone over the MFU data there. I didn't want these posts to replace those in any way and instead to add to them. Please check out those posts (linked above) for a more MFU-oriented approach!

a lot of the books? really good. a solid few of them? really terrible. reccommend giving them a shot though i <3 these books. will probably upload the statistics ive been keeping in a few days when i get a chance to sort them out/double check them
