The Mezashi Jig took iCAST by storm last year. First developed by Mr Takahashi of Mustad it quickly spread throughout Europe to Asia. This year Mustad will release the US version. The difference? The JAW LOK Treble will be replaced with an Ultra-Point Treble. I was informed by Mustad this will be a better hook for the US market. I was afraid after successfully testing a few lures for another company a year ago that the trebles would tear apart the mouth. But I was pleasantly surprised to be able to safely remove the U.P. Treble with no torn tissue damage or making the fish bleed out. I removed some using my pliers but I risked using my fingers to show that these hook choices were the right ones. In less than 2hrs I could’ve filled a small cooler with Jacks. But I released all my catches as our environment couldn’t handle everyone to keep what they catch. 1st day in the field using my Mezashi from Mustad. The 20g had better action than any of my other jigs which is saying something as I have 100’s. But that 30g! Damn! I’m casting it far! Farther than all my other weighted jigs. But that action is unique. Glad I got to see it in person. The faster I increase the speed the wilder the jig reacts due to that special 55/45 offset weight and that special asymmetrical shape of a thinner bladed front section to a fatter triangular rear. Even during the distance lobbing it was “squirming” in mid air! I’m beginning to realize Mr Takahashi who contributed to this product has helped create the best jig I’ve ever used! Reacts more violently in the water on the retrieval than a top water surface plug!
