My coworker and I were talking yesterday as she was trying to catch me up on what I had missed at work before I got there. She said the bank was closed for Juneteenth and them asked me if I knew what that was. So, I explained it to her to the best of my ability as a white person who has never celebrated it.

And then, the coworker that I fucking hate piped in.

And she had the gall to say that Irish people were also inslaved and they don't make a big deal about it.

I was so flabbergasted that I didn't know what to say. I had to just walk away while I processed it. It was one of those things that I knew people believed, but I had never heard it spoken out loud. It really threw me off.

Anyways, she is a not good person. Doesn't believe in being vaxxed, think all police deserve respect (even if they straight up murder people) and has also complained about immigration despite being married to a Mexicanimmigrant? It's wild.

Election Shock

My name is Susan and my story is about a group of teenagers, girls that I have worked with since 7th grade.  These girls are now 10th graders in high school.  Their families are all Mexican immigrants. Some of the girls were born in the US and some were not, coming here at a young age.  

They’re all wonderful.  Most have future goals and work to keep their grades up to 4.0 or as close as can get to a 4.0. They are involved in sports and many work. They have problems like all adolescents have, they are close to their families and they want to do well.

The day after the election I was personally totally distraught. I was beside myself, not believing what just occurred.   Our girl’s group was scheduled for that afternoon.  Based on the emotional state of the day for many, we decided to change our agenda for group to an open format, allowing for any emotional processing of the election that was needed.

 I knew the girls might be feeling something, but I was totally shocked at what I heard as they described their experiences during the day.   Tears rolling down their cheeks  as they recounted the comments they were met with as they arrived at school.   You’re a Mexican, you’re gonna be deported, you won’t be around for long.  One girl said she was threatened by a boy who said he could grab her pussy if he wanted.  The comments were derogatory, mean & hurtful.  These girls grew up in this area. They have been classmates with these kids all the way through and yet, there were treated as if they didn’t belong and they didn’t matter.
