‘Critical Role’ Cast Teases Its Future and a Potential ‘Passing of the Torch’
New Rolling Stone interview dropped.
Few tidbits gleaned:
More original Beacon content next year
More Daggerheart, one shots, minis, etc
Animated series, not Exandria related, in development
Feature films (!) in development
Recently pitched a live action series
Mighty Nein 2025 release
They've been in discussion for a couple of years about how to create their own game. May have something to announce end of year / early next year.
No mention of switching systems, just playing more varied games
No word on Campaign 4

Okay but, if the Assembly actually does have some idea of what Ludinus is up to, probably to varying degrees, but cannot act, and they've essentially turned a blind eye to Caleb's activities of hunting down amoral criminal mages and possibly run some interference on his behalf particularly with regard to Ludinus.......
Nonzero chance that someone (Astrid) has in fact covered tracks for Caleb's wanted criminal mage boyfriend who would be VERY easy for Ludinus to exploit as blackmail, and is being SO chill and collected and professional about it.
In other words, workplace dramedy-turned-spy thriller surrounding the last year of the Cerberus Assembly WHEN.

We're called Encyclopedia Exandria, but did you know that we also cover Midst?
Our scope as a wiki is everything related to Critical Role Productions, and Midst has belonged to that fold ever since it came under the wing of Metapigeon.
We have a family of articles covering Midst, including a glossary, timeline, individual episode articles, and character articles. We even have an article for Midst: Address Unknown ready for August and are working to expand coverage into other subjects.
As with everything at Encyclopedia Exandria, our resources are limited, but we're doing our best to cover Midst and to update, correct, and expand our coverage where and when we can. If you'd like to help with the upkeep of our Midst articles (or any of our articles), whether it's as small as a typo correction or as big as a weekly update, you are always welcome—it would be very Valorous of you!

Today Critical Role's development and production company, Metapigeon, has announced the acquisition of the narrative podcast Midst. Midst is a semi-improvised audio drama that already has two seasons under its belt with a third on the way. While Critical Role has expanded multiple times in recent years into their publishing branch Darrington Press, creating board games such as Uk'otoa and Till The Last Gasp, and into animation with the first two seasons of The Legends of Vox Machina available to stream on Amazon Prime this is the first time that Critical Role has purchased an existing entertainment IP and brought it under their umbrella. The first three remastered episodes will release for free via Critical Role's YouTube channel on April 11th, 12th, and 13th.

I am so intrigued with this direction for Critical Role and the expansion of Metapigeon as a production and distribution channel.
I have been wondering what CR would do for additional content.
It felt like, especially after the pandemic the cast have been exceptionally busy in other projects but also as I was going down the line of CR’s other shows, I felt like it wasn’t sustainable to always rely on the same cast members to always be hosting different shows or playing games.
But also, Critical Role didn’t have to play the same grind and hustle wheelhouse twitch streamers seemed to find themselves trapped in. They already have a dedicated audience, and as Kevin Kelly once wrote sometimes all you need is 1,000 true fans.
At the same time, they do still need to produce videos/content to keep an audience engaged.
This feels like a good direction CR is heading towards, it is in line with their brand, and doubling down on their statement about uplifting indie creators. Something they’ve said before and reiterated during the whole OGL fiasco. Marisha and Matt weren’t just offering lip service to Linda Codega.
I wondered when Worlds Beyond Number was released with its fantastic audio design if Critical Role will also do something similar but re-releasing Midst and producing its season 3 feels like such a good first step in both expanding and also helping indie creators get boosted.
Midst is also on brand because it seems to be a fantastic narrative story with semi-improvisation.
But also, I hope Marisha will talk about the thought process of adding Midst to CR’s stable of content. I loved when Marisha (in Google Talks) discussed how she broke down what made CR popular and created shows towards that.
Adding in another show is also going to give the CR cast members more bandwidth, while also giving fans something new.
I’m looking forward to all the lore and artwork this new show will add!

Midst Podcast has apparently taken down their podcast feed, taken down their website, wiped their Twitter, set up a new website that the old domain does not redirect to, and are now rereleasing the episodes weekly under Critical Role????? Did something happen with Third Person? That they needed to completely start again as Metapigeon underneath Critical Role????
EDIT: Oh, apparently Metapigeon isn't them, apparently it belongs to Critical Role and CR/Metapigeon bought Midst. Somehow. I uh, don't like this? I hope the people making the show are getting paid. I wonder if we'll ever get a season 3.

A few more details from a Variety article about the acquisition: With the acquisition, Critical Role will rerelease the first two seasons of “Midst” featuring remastered audio and a new video version of each episode. Each episode features at least one original art piece from artists including Ricardo Bessa, Lenka Simeckova, Sam Bosma, Artem Chebokha, Lap Pun Cheung and Will Kirkby.
The unnamed founders of “Midst” commented, “In lieu of the trumpet and explosion emojis that would be the truest expression of our feelings, we can say with full sincerity that we are over the moon to have found partners with such phenomenal passion and talent for creative multimedia storytelling. Critical Role and Metapigeon are enabling us to bring Midst to life in ways we never imagined possible, and we can’t wait to share what’s in store with fans both old and new.”
Also we do have a price for their monthly sub($2.99/month or $29.99/year)which will allow you to be two weeks ahead of the public feed and will also allow access to extra materials such as "documents, items and artifacts from the world of the story."

This has been coming for a while now and I am super stoked to see them finally announce it! I cannot wait to see where this goes especially as a fan of weird sci-fi.
Here's a brief synopsis from the Announcement article on CR's website:
We’re so glad you asked! In this series, three mischievous narrators will take you on a surreal, space-western journey about the doomed planet of Midst that spins on the border between two halves of the cosmos: the dazzling bright atmosphere called “The Un” and the sea of dark otherworldly fog called “The Fold.”
Life is simple for most of the planet’s inhabitants… until an influential and shadowy society known as The Trust takes an interest in Midst and sparks an unexpected chain of events, intertwining the lives of a crotchety outlaw, a freakishly-virtuous cultist, and a weird diabolical bastard. This excellent story has unsolved murders, cult brainwashing, supernatural darkness, bright spots of hope, found families, and rich world-building.
Also, the moon is about to fall out of the sky and cause reality to eat itself alive. And that’s just the start of where we begin with season one! The first two seasons of Midst are ready to go, and the team is hard at work on the third season—so whether this is the first you’ve heard of it or you’re a long-time listener, we think you’ll really enjoy all there is to come!

with the Metapigeon moves announced today and so I'm doing thinking about the production company, I remembered that the Fandom wiki bizarrely INSISTS on referring to the companies as "Critical Role Productions LLC" and "Metapigeon LLC" and it's like, is that, like, necessary?
#tbh it's the sort of like hopelessly pedantic detail that annoyed me about the admin#Critical Role things#CR

I just want to talk for a second about how proud and pleased I am that the CR crew is getting to become a fully fledged development studio. Like, creating their own stuff yeah, but also producing new content wholly unconnected. Getting shopped scripts and getting to support new and small-time writers, animation studios. Creating development initiatives and helping broaden and diversify the ttrpg, actual play, and animation genres. Helping support other ttrpg groups. There are *so* many opportunities and doors open to them with this deal, and I'm so excited to see what else comes out of their company.
