Summary: Awoken one morning to noises outside, the reader pushes Negan to take a look. Reluctantly he does, only to find it’s not what he expected…

Chapter Thirty: The Runners

Your hand was clasped in Negan’s as he walked ahead of you. He came to a stop just before the doorway, turned to kiss your forehead, and whispered a quiet command to stay put before he turned back. You watched as he walked out onto the metal balcony, his leather jacket stretching as he held his shoulders high, his boots clomping along the hard and dusty floor. He banged the wooden bat against the railing, getting everyone’s attention, before reaching out, leaning his body forward as he addressed the group of people gathered under him.

“I’m gonna keep this short. We’re in need of food, we’re in need of water, hell we’re in need of almost everything. But what we do have, is the manpower to fix that shit. I know we don’t have cars, fuck we can add that to the list, but we’re gonna come back with some. So it’s gonna be tough, and it’s probably going to be the hardest thing we will do, but it’s gonna be worth it. For the food, for the beer, for this place to be our home. If you don’t think you can handle it, hell I ain’t gonna argue with ya, just do us all a favour and get the fuck out of here now, while you’re still alive.” He paused then, watching the crowd, before his hand came up to rub down his beard. He took a long sigh before he continued, “for those of you who think your balls are big enough to cope with this shit, go get whatever shit you might need, we leave in ten from the gates.”

With that he banged the wooden bat against the railing once again, and you watched on in pure amazement as the small crowd immediately dispersed. You took it as a sign, and walked over to wear Negan was still stood, now leaning his forearms against the dirty metal railing. His head turned as he heard you approaching, his lips forming into a smile as he took in your expression.

“You okay there, babydoll?”, he drawled out, the smile turning into a smirk. You nodded, feeling your cheeks turning pink. You leaned into his side, feeling his lips press against your scalp, and you knew you needed to ask. But you also knew he would say no. You groaned in annoyance, knowing your efforts would probably be pointless.

“What was that for?” He asked, the smile still evident in his voice. You looked up at him then, attempting to read his face, before you decided on just getting it over with - the faster the better.

“Can, can I come with you, on the supply run?” The silence was deafening, and the longer it lasted, the more you were beginning to regret asking. Then he spoke, his voice without a hint of sarcasm.

“You sure?”

You blinked, trying to take in what he had said. You had been certain he would fight you on it, argue that it was for your own safety, before making you stay behind. But he hadn’t.

“Yeah, I mean yeah, I’m sure. I don’t want to stay here and I promise-“

“Baby”, he interrupted, kissing your lips gently, “go pack a bag. You need your coat, your hat, scarf, all that shit yeah? I’ll get food for you, you gotta be quick though.”

You nodded, kissing him once more before running past him, down the noisy metalstaircase, and through the hall. You had to get out of there before he changed his mind, you were still in disbelief that he had said yes to begin with. This is gonna be a wild few days, you thought, running up the stairs to your room.
