Derailed: The Anthem of Anxiety

Derailed this is more often than not held as at least one of the top five songs from the album and I wanted to make an ode to it to analyze I think why it's easily one of the best songs that shows that LMM and Eisa Davis are masters of their craft.

*Derailed* hits like a warped reflection of one of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s iconic madrigals—the kind where overlapping voices collide into a storm of sound and emotion. If it had a kindred spirit, it might be *Blackout* from *In the Heights*, but twisted into something darker, more unhinged, like anxiety given a melody.

What makes *Derailed* particularly striking is how it opens from Cleon’s first-person perspective, recounting the moment her life was literally and figuratively derailed at a train in Dekalb. If we assume the album takes place in the same gritty 1979 as the film, it’s tempting to link Cleon’s story to the infamous 1961 train derailment at Lincoln Highway and Fourth Street. The idea of her being a child caught in the chaos is a chilling one, though history complicates the narrative—this wasn’t a passenger train, and the only children involved were in cars nearby, not on board. Still, the imagery of that disaster looms large, adding an eerie layer of plausibility to Cleon’s backstory.

The crash out Cleon is having is understandable considering she saw one of her inspiration Cyrus gets shot in the head and she managed to actually witness Luther committing the murder.

(also note the Davis stated that she sprinkled some Hamilton references throughout this song and the world falls down is the first one).

I think this is where one of the more compelling parts happens because Luther and by extension his gang begin to rally everybody around the idea that the Warriors are the ones who diced Cyrus.

Musically, we can hear just how powerful Luther's voice is because this song shifts into being a Black Sabbath styled riff that has the honor of being the first time Rock being introduced into the album.

I wanted to hone in on this that Luther and by extension the cops are defined by rock and roll/metal is another really clever use of thematic storytelling.

For those who may not know, these genres WERE CREATED BY POC, primarily African Americans with Chuck Berry being the father of rock and roll along with big mama thornton, and heavy metal owing its creation to Jimi Hendrix.

Luther and his gang were given a seat at the cookout and metaphorically and literally used that opportunity to devastate said community with a full-blown hate crime while simultaneously appropriating something from that culture as if it's theirs.

Tangent asid, Luther takes advantage of all of the chaos and blames the Warriors which all of the predominant male gang members just follow because at the end of the day the loudest white voice in the room will always be a guiding voice unknowing or not in a very eurocentric country.

if you watch the movie, Cleon is literally being attacked by the Rouges and Griffs because she can't really see a place to escape and as she's being overpowered she yells for the Warriors to escape.

I do find an interesting that both Swan and Ajax are both the ones coordinating the girls through all the chaos with Ajax telling everybody to stay down and Swan trying to find an opening for them to escape.

Cochise seems to be the primary muscle during this portion as well.

Something I didn't really noticed until I actually looked at the lyric video today was that in the background you can hear the other gang saying things like " Cyrus GOES DOWN and Sirens" which is really neat.

Derailed is also super important because it's the one that introduces all of the motifs of the various characters.

Ajax near the end laments that she hates running, Luther as I said, is in the background yelling that Cyrus went down which foreshadows his own song going down, and then there's Fox's character Arc.

Fox’s melody and lyrics here are both reprised in Reunion Square, where the words ‘we’ and ‘us’ are changed to ‘I’ as Fox fights the cop; interesting to note that the cop also sings this melody underneath Fox in Reunion Square, harmonising to show that he, too, has only one goal – survival – in that moment.

Pippa Soo is the phenomenal actress that plays both Eliza Hamilton and Fox, and in many ways these characters mirror one another since both of them want to keep their loved ones alive but Fox sort of pulls a Philip Hamilton because Fox starts off as being kind of the most haughty of the Warriors and as noted on the reddit, she even speaks in a much more sultry voice during her Cypher verse and to make yourself seem on the level as her older sisters (she seems to be trying to emulate Ajax).

Another thing that I want to comment on is the Griff's " WHO WILL SAVE US"

This cry could be said to draw a comparison between Cyrus and a messiah figure like Jesus.The vision she shared with the crews of the 5 boroughs promised them a city they could feel safe in if they trust in each other, similar to the promise Jesus makes to deliver the Israelites to a land of milk and honey if they trust in him (Exodus 3:8 KJV). She also encourages them to view each other as brothers and sisters under this new truce and to protect each other accordingly – also similar to how those who follow the will of God are viewed as brothers and sisters in the eyes of Jesus (Matthew 12:48-50). Overall, this vision promised some form of salavation for the crews of New York just as a messiah promises salvation to their people.The fact that the Riffs ask who will save them now suggests they viewed Cyrus as their messiah for a promised future and that without her, that future is lost.

Masai largely echoes the sentiment later on in " Still Breathing" were after he finishes beating up Cleon he ends up puking his emotions out.

It's been talked about the death, but I feel like at that point Cyrus and the fact that you was a woman did it register she ended up becoming something completely non-binary, a symbol.

While the way her game went about it was completely wrong, it shows that her spirit can metaphorically be embodied by anybody regardless of who they are but it seems like most of the gangs saw her as more than your average woman which mistakenly causes them to revert back to punching down on others like marginalize women.

The song ends with Luther chanting his iconic "Warriors come out and play" as the Warriors run away through the cemetery.

Although you can't see it, in the movie Cleon completely dismantle Luther which again foreshadows what's about to happen to him later on.

Luther for whatever reason has headcannoned the Warriors is being a bunch of weak little girls that are running away for their lives but in actuality they're a pride of lionesses the know how to maneuver their way through tough situations even when society is beating them throughout the night.

He finds out the hard way when he and Crosby ride into their den on Coney Island and Swan gives him a one-sided beatdown.

And that's the analysis.

Derailed is incredibly loaded in a good way and out of literally any musical number I've seen for a while does a great job of establishing everything without beating you over the head.

Sonic Shipping

Shipping characters from a franchise where there aren't really any canon relationships is very... interesting. Let's get into it.

Sidenote: I'm not covering every possible ship, just ones I have something to say about. Also can we come up with better ship names please? Thanks.

Sonic x Amy So everyone knows SonAmy, it certainly is a ship. I like the trope of "head over heels" x "uninterested tease", but Sonic gives Amy nothing. And more often than not, Amy's character is completely reduced to being in love with Sonic. Sega has gotten better about the latter in recent years, at least. I still don't find this ship very appealing— I get it, but it's not for me. However, people have been theorizing that in the fourth movie, Sonic will be the one with the unrequited crush. That would be a super interesting shift in dynamic, and I'd definitely be more invested if that happens.

Metal Sonic x Amy Okay this is a bit more interesting. Metal Sonic is an incredibly tragic character— someone who full heartedly believes he is someone else, yet can never seem to quite match his strength. He's been labeled a failure by Eggman, and is continuously beaten and broken until he is less than Sonic. Amy, on the other hand, is kind and caring to all creatures, so naturally she sees the best in Metal. It's cute seeing him be treated with love for the first time, like a lost little puppy. I think this relationship is strictly romantic (personally, I think Metal is autistic and asexual) but it's something they both need. Very cute.

Sonic x Knuckles Knuckles acts as a great foil to Sonic. Where Sonic is free-spirited and wild, Knuckles is disciplined, and stuck protecting Angel Island and the Master Emerald. Honestly, he might even be a better foil than Shadow, who sort of just shows up out of nowhere. They're more so symbolic opposites, in my opinion. At the same time, Sonic and Knuckles are friends, where as Shadow didn't even show up to Sonic's birthday party </3 It's hard to imagine enemies to lovers when they're stuck in the Friend Zone. Decent ship, not really for me.

Sonic x Shadow I mean what do I have to say. This is The Ship of the fandom. Unpopular opinion, but I don't care about Shadow that much :-/ So even though this ship is skibidi sigma slay and I totally agree with it, it's not my favorite. It's still endgame though.

Shadow x Amy They're besties and that's that.

Shadow x Rouge Shadow and Rouge are obviously a gay/lesbian duo, so I don't understand the appeal. I do love them as friends though.

Knuckles x Rouge It's so gooood. They're always bickering, always at odds, and yet they can't resist each other. I love Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks from Prime, so good. I'm not usually one for straight ships, but in my mind its bi4bi so we're safe.

Silver x Blaze I love them as friends, they're both autistic and asexual <3 However, I disagree with shipping them romantically. To me, they're another iconic gay/lesbian duo. For those who've read Homestuck, they're basically moirails.

Sonic x Blaze I was a bit of a hater at first, but I've grown to somewhat like it. They have some cute moments, especially in the IDW comics. I like to think that Blaze has unrequited feelings for Sonic, but it's just something she likes to think about from time to time. They're not necessarily romantic feelings, but she loves how he challenges her, and strives to be as carefree as he is.

Sonic x Silver I love gay hedgehogs as much as the next guy, but I just don't get this one. Maybe that'll change after I play Sonic 06, but as much as I want to love it, I just find it mediocre.

Silver x Espio I truly did not understand this at first. I thought someone just took their two favorite characters and made them kiss. However, after reading the IDW comics, I still didn't understand it. Then I looked at ship art and thought about it more and I kind of like it. They have surprisingly similar personalities and interests, but are just different enough to be unique. I think they're both ace, but Espio definitely leans a bit more towards allosexual. I love the idea of him trying to kiss Silver, but he gets flustered and shy.

Vector x Vanilla They're so silly!! Oh man I was floored when I first read the IDW comics and learned that Vector was into milfs. I also didn't realize he was twenty— I like the idea of him being fresh into the dating people as a young adult; he could have anyone he wants, and he goes straight for Cream's mom. It's so iconic, and Vanilla seems into it if you ask me...

Tails x Cosmo I need to watch Sonic X before deciding if I like this or not. I at least know that they touch upon it in the show, so I can at least understand it.

Tails x Cream There's not much merritt to this, in my opinion. I feel like people ship them just because they're both children— which I guess is fine? Personally, I don't like shipping children because they don't have the same concepts of love and romance that adults, or even teens, do. Nonetheless, I like Tails and I like Cream, so who knows. Maybe it would be a good ship.

Charmy x Cream I've seen so many future AUs where Vector and Espio leave the Chaotix, and Charmy continues it with Cream, and it feels so right to me. I wouldn't ship them romantically, but I love that they're detective partners.

Whisper x Tangle I mean they're basically canon. Both great characters, and both them and their friendship have great arcs. Personally, I don't see them being very sexual? Maybe they're ace4ace, or platonic soulmates, or whatever term you could come up with. Either way, they belong with each other <3

Surge x Amy At first, I thought people just wanted toxic yuri. Of course there's merritt to that, but it wasn't for me. Then I thought about how Surge is a parallel to Sonic, and it started making sense. They don't have enough interactions for me to be interested, but I hope that changes.

Dr. Robotnik x Agent Stone Do I even have to say anything.

If you know Shadow the Hedgehog, you know Chaos Control, the iconic move that’s associated with him. Eggman’s description says it all, you use a Chaos Emerald to teleport or freeze time.

But do you need a Chaos Emerald?

I’m going to delve into the history of Chaos Control, and really get to the bottom of this, and whether this piece of common knowledge has any weight to it or not.

Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics) Issue #59

First thing I want to establish is that this limitation was even established in the first place, and not just a recent addition. Fortunately, that’s not very difficult, as we get statements in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic 06, Sonic Rivals, and his Sonic Channel profile that all claim he uses Chaos Emeralds for Chaos Control.

SA2 even presents warping with an artificial Chaos Emerald as an impressive feat, implying that doing so without one at all is impossible. Only for Shadow to immediately use Chaos Control seconds later in his fight against Sonic (and we know it’s Chaos Control despite him not shouting the phrase as it looks identical when Sonic does it, who does shout Chaos Control as part of teleporting).

So what gives?

Is it maybe a matter of proximity to the Chaos Emeralds? That would line up with the Biolizard using Chaos Control in front of the heroes, Metal Overlord using Chaos Control against Team Super Sonic, or Devil Doom using Chaos Control near Super Shadow, or Metal Sonic using Chaos Control when racing against Shadow.

Except that can’t be the case, as Shadow can use Chaos Control even while on the other side of the Black Comet. Well, maybe the range is surprisingly generous, only needing Shadow to be vaguely a city’s worth of distance away?

It can’t be that either, Shadow can use Chaos Control while in Chaotic Inferno, a whole universe away (and Rouge left behind the 6 Chaos Emeralds), but laments that he cannot escape from this universe without one when the portal closes, despite Metal Sonic’s Chaos Emerald quite literally being right next to him.

Is there any explanation at all? Well, kind of.

In Sonic Battle, almost all of Shadow’s moves are described as using Chaos Control

In story, Shadow’s power to fight is attributed to his Chaos Emerald. But when he surrenders his Chaos Emerald to Emerl, he reassures that he’ll be able to continue fighting despite the lack of the Chaos Emerald as “I no longer need it. I have Maria in my heart.” Which simultaneously suggests that physical possession (or extremely close proximity) is required in order to use Chaos Control normally, and that there are ways to utilise it without a Chaos Emerald.

… That explanation works for Shadow, and it’s possible to handwave it away with Metal Sonic (after all, it’s copying abilities allowed it to become one of the most powerful characters in Sonic canon, superior to solo super forms which are powered by 7 Chaos Emeralds), but what about the Biolizard? Devil Doom? Shadow himself during Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)’s Last Story? Those can’t be under the same conditions.

Is there an explanation that can account for everything?

Well, there is one…

In the IDW Comics, in issue #59 (part 3 of the Urban Warfare arc), on page 11, Shadow makes a claim regarding his use of Chaos Control.

“I don’t have the energy to perform Chaos Control without an emerald.”

The power of the Chaos Emeralds are considered a form of energy, dubbed Chaos Energy, or Chaos Emerald Energy, or- you get the idea. We’ve seen non-Chaos Emerald objects hold them before, like the Chaos Drives invented by Professor Gerald. It’s plausible that the various times Shadow (and other such characters) used Chaos Control without a Chaos Emerald were derived from using leftover energy from when they had prior possessed a Chaos Emerald (or Metal Sonic’s copying abilities, which let him compete with Super Forms directly).

Afterall, the Chaos Emeralds turn your thoughts into power, and has been described as being enriched by the heart. Having the bond of someone close to you etched into your heart could have such an effect to amplify the Chaos Energy leftover, at least enough to delay running out for some time.

Due to Amy Rose having a cloak on (a reference from the archie comics), Here are Three ideas she can have in the fourth installment.

• The red and white feather (known as the Warrior Feather from Sonic Adventure) can actually be an hint if Amy was raised by a Guardian owl like how Sonic was raised by Longclaw.

• Since her speed and hammer strength is enough to take out multiple Metal Sonics, her invisibility power from Sonic 06 would be nice to see as well. It would show how Amy is capable enough to be a hero like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

• Have her wear the green and orange dress first before her glow up in the red and white dress. Speaking of the red and white dress. Jojo or Maddie could actually help out Amy with a new dress, and when Sonic sees Amy in her iconic videogame dress, Sonic will have hearts in his eyes.

New Rumor

Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden, Tika Sumpter) may not appear in the fourth movie, but I call that bullshit. They are Sonic's parents. There is no reason to get rid of them. Take time to develop and to feel with them and with the Sonic Movie Characters. JUST! DEVELOP!

Ideas

What if Rouge the Bat is Amy Rose's first female antagonist? As she tries to steal the time stones for herself but gets portrayed by Dr. Robotnik to give them to Metal Sonic, now to Neo Metal Sonic, as both Amy and Rouge start teaming up with Team Sonic to fight Neo Metal Sonic and Robotnik. And Sonic and Amy go super hedgehogs to defeat Neo Metal Sonic.

It's my dream (and had a dream last night about this idea) is to have Wade Whipple and maybe Captain Rockwell interact with each other. It would be funny to see how Wade and Rockwell are opposite from protecting and serving as a Police Officer or a Guardian Units of Nations Captain. I could definitely see Adam Pally and Krysten Ritter work well with their comedy together.

And possibly... a Stobotnik reunion and a genuine villainous love story between the two of them. I know they don't become a full-on couple. But Lee Majdoub (Stone) supports all fanfiction/fanart of that. As Stone works and loves Robotnik so much, he wants to become him. Jim Carrey doesn't want to leave as Robotnik as long as director Jeff Fowler gives him great ideas and a script written in gold.

Sonic: okay do I really need to explain this one?

Knuckles: What can I say, his gender contains multitudes. He's definitely a member of the "I don't care" camp for both gender and sexuality. He is what he is, loves who he loves, and doesn't give two rips about what other people might say. I like to imagine he plays around with both genders of clothing from echidna culture.

Amy: oh Amy, my sweet summer child. It's so autistic and queer of you to relentlessly declare your love for someone of the opposite sex because it's what is expected of you. I did the same in third grade before I realized that the other girls meant what they were saying about their target boy. Heteronormativity is a bitch, get well soon <3

Rouge: I think she fucked around with being she/they for a while before settling back on she/her. And bi icon, of course.

Blaze: okay do I really need to explain this one?

Silver: That is one nonbinary hedgehog if I ever saw one! He's a he/him by convenience alone. He hasn't had the chance to explore his sexuality yet unfortunately.

Big: He's good with he/him and that's all he cares about. Not a super strong connection to his assigned gender at birth but he likes being a boy well enough. As for his sexuality, he never figured out what everyone was going on about when it came to sex, and only recently figured out it was because he was literally missing that 'sexual attraction' thing.

Shadow: is nonbinary as fuck and has no idea. Honey, seeing masculinity as a burden you have to bear is not normal!!! He's also demi-ace. It takes a very close relationship with someone to even consider sexual attraction.

Cream: happy being a girl! Hasn't really thought about crushing on anyone yet.

Tails: Internalized homophobia + transphobia from being bullied go brrrrrr. Besides, Sonic doesn't spend much time thinking about these things, so why should he? (Tails. Tails listen to me. Sonic's aro and knew he was trans at an unusually young age. he's a statistical outlier with how early he figured it out PLEASE consider that and don't base your self-discovery journey on him. . .)

Metal: You all know my headcanons for this one. Metal was assigned male by Eggman from its earliest iterations and gender dysphoria is literally 98% of all of its problems. Please get this robot some estrogen. As for sexuality, full romantic attraction is definitely on the table but jesus christ this robot needs to do some work on itself before that. Please read Complex Inquiries if you want me to elaborate that's like my master's thesis on this subject

Vector: Gave his gender a really good thinking before shrugging and sticking with his assigned gender at birth. Also pan as hell, definitely dated some femboys in high school I think.

Espio: Currently in the process of speculating if he's nonbinary. Keeps very quiet about it though. But he knows he likes dudes, so there's that.

Charmy: He's bit-sexual. Whatever he needs to be for the punchline of the joke to land, frankly.

Omega: For narrative parallel reasons to Metal Sonic, I love to headcanon that Omega wasn't programmed with a gender, but then discovered that masculinity is traditionally associated with aggression and violence and went ham. Doesn't mind getting she/her'd, doesn't exactly like they/them, but it/its is of the highest offense. He will kill you for that. As for his sexuality, (I know he's a robot but PLEASE hear me out) he's demi-aro! He'd have no idea that any sort of feelings on his part are happening until it was too late. He'd hate himself for it and promptly bury said feelings beneath so many layers.

Alright y'all, it's the legend, the queen, the icon, everyone's favorite bat, everyone's furry awakening, the lovely jewel theif, Rouge The Bat, ABOB-ified!

Rouge is 38 years old, birthday is July 26th, 1986. She is Pansexual and 4'9 feet tall. She goes by She/Her pronouns. She is a bright white-furred little brown Mobian bat with black wings, tan skin, curvy body, large ears, and turquoise eyes. She styles her “hair” in an interesting manner, two long strips of white in front, and the rest of her hair is cut into short bob-like spikes that curve outward. She wears dark purple gloves, pale purple tube top, black jeans, white and dark purple boots with gold bands, a belly button piercing, three piercings on each of her ears, and a black and gold star necklace.

Nothing short of an enigma, Rouge’s morals and goals are always in question. Most of the time, she has herself in mind. She’s a strong-minded, bold, seductive, sassy, and smart mercenary, but still loyal to the people she loves the most. Once she has a target in mind, nothing can stop her from accomplishing her mission. She used to be a part-time government agent who underwent extensive, grueling training. She also used it as a chance to hone her thieving skills, known to be a brilliant spy one minute and a gem-obsessed treasure hunter the next. She’s proven herself to be a rather fearsome individual. Unlike Knuckles, most of her strength lies in her legs and feet, giving her the ability to kick down metal walls and boulders. A true girlboss. She’s rather flirtatious with anyone around her age, and loves seducing others, men, women, people, and Mobians alike.

Silver had finally confronted the monster that had caused so much damage across his home city. Hospitals', schools', churches', and homes' were all destroyed. He had heard the rumors about who was doing it.

But he couldn't believe them. Sonic was dead, so how could it be him? He was a fool, and he knew that now, though at the same time his thoughts had truth about this thing, it wasn't Sonic; at least he didn't want to believe it was; it was simply a computer program gone rouge.

This is the first time he's seen this thing up close, and Silver was filled with rage knowing this thing had used his friend's face to perpetrate so many heinous deeds, not only his face but his voice and his mannerisms that smiled—the smile he had grown so fond of.

Silver stayed calm, though he wouldn't let his feelings get the better of him. He took a deep breath and stood in front of Hologram, who was just smiling at him. The smile was eerie and cold.

"Why?..."

That was all Silver could ask as he stared at the monster in front of him.

Hologram soon let out a hearty laugh before striking a snarky pose and faded away before suddenly appearing right in front of Silver for a moment.

"Why? Because they destroyed my legacy Silver, I was once a hero, and now? I'm a product placement and advertising thing I would never endorse. Even sweat shops use my likeness. 

They don't see me for what I was; they see me as an advertising ploy, a way to use my likeness to make all these greedy people money, and I'm sick of it!"

Silver scoffed and waved his hand to disrupt the hologram's body; this made Hologram disappear and appear a few feet away from the other hedgehog, annoyed.

"You're not Sonic, because Sonic would never do this; the Sonic I know fights injustice; if anything, you're just a cheap copy that even Metal Sonic pulls off better."

Hologram turned red and grew in size before shouting loudly with a more robotic-sounding voice that was a bit distorted.

"I'M NOTHING LIKE METAL SONIC, I DON'T JUST THINK I'M SONIC, I KNOW I AM THE REAL SONIC, I'M NOT JUST A FUCKING UNTHINKING MACHINE, I HAVE MY MIND, I HAVE MY LOOKS, PERSONALITY, MEMORIES, EMOTIONS!"

Silver took a step back with a worried look on his face, but still had visible disgust and a hint of pity.

"One day you will realize your wrong... Hologram, but I'll humor you for now, 'Sonic' if you really were him, you'd snap out of it by now and realize what your doing is wrong."

"If you want to prove your 'Sonic' then please just stop; there is a better way of going about this! No one else has to die! I already had to accept your death once. Sure, I can visit you in the past if I want. 

But I've seen you buried, and I can't bring myself to hurt you, even if you're not really him. Please prove you're still a hero and stand down. Think about the damage you've done. Just STOP!"

Hologram's face darkened; it disappeared completely as he thought about Silver's words. If he had a working heart, it would be beating right now. He questioned himself for a moment but soon stopped as a red glow appeared where one of his eyes should be.

"I'm sorry, Silver; I'm afraid I can't do that."

And before Silver could respond, he noticed something: he didn't see Techie with Hologram.

"Where is Kaboo-?"

An explosion was heard off in the distance, and loud screaming could be heard along with a large smoke cloud filling the sky. Silver turned around to look at it in utter awe and horror.

Hologram appeared right behind Silver, the red glow completely covering the other hedgehog as he whispered, "Go on, 'hero' save the day; you always told me you wanted to be a hero like me, so prove it and go die like one too."

Silver had tears fall down his face as he heard Hologram say this, and he turned around in an attempt to punch him, forgetting he was intangible, and he shouted loudly. "SHUT THE HELL UP, FAKER!"

Hologram just looked at him with that iconic smug smirk he had always seen Sonic look at Eggman with and responded one last time.

"Heh, well, I gotta skedaddle, old buddy, but I'll see you again later; this hedgehog's got a busy day napping ahead of him. Good luck, buddy! I believe in you." 

And like the smug bastard he was, he blew a kiss at Silver and winked before disappearing as quickly as he appeared.

Silver's heart skipped a beat for a moment, but he soon shook his head and wiped tears from his eye before heading towards the city in an attempt to save what lives he could from whatever this imposter did. 

While Techie and Hologram escaped the crime scene before he could get there, this wasn't the last encounter they'd have, but Silver knew that he needed to stop Hologram at any cost, feelings be damned.
