The javelin cuts through the air. Krieg's aim is true, the point heading straight for the cocky noble's heart - but it strikes an invisible, metalhard surface inches away, sending up a spray of sparks and ricocheting to the side.

Shinonome laughs. "Ah, damn," he says, and his voice deepens and roughens, until it sounds like bedrock grinding, "I suppose the gig is up. I have neighbours in the Abyss who will drag the location of the book from you." And standing before our adventurers, thirty feet in the air upon his faintly glowing stingray, is the demon Tarkak. He leaps down to the paving stones.

As Vola and Krieg engage him with their consecrated weapons, the stingray above them dissolves, dropping dretch fiends upon the ground.

Damaia's repertoire of fire spells proves of diminished effect against demonkind, but Quagoon is able to strike with physical and psychic dagger before hiding in the fringes of parkland.

Tarkak points at Krieg and utters a Word in Abyssal which overcomes the dragonborn's mind, leaving him stunned.

Vola unleashes a furious flurry of severe blows upon the demon, but is caught off guard by the flatulant blast of a foul dretch.

The other small demons are cleared by Damaia and Quagoon.

Tarkak, wounded by Vola, attempts to leap into the air, but the goliath warrior catches onto his leg and holds him down. The demon throws a handful of beruned bones from his pocket upon the ground; a few of them burst when they crack against the paving stoned and Vola and the stunned Krieg are blasted backwards as matter bends between them. Where there had been three small cracked bones stand now a trio of Vrocks, horrid vulturemen demons.

Vola had retained her hold on Tarkak. She drags him to her level, seizes one of his horns, and hacks at his neck with her greatsword, clutched in a single hand.

As the Vrocks gain their bearings in the material plane, Krieg comes to - the stunning spell broken as Vola's bloody sword severs the final tendon of Tarkak's neck. A final gout of bright demon blood coats two-thirds of her blade, and as the demon's body drops and she brandishes Tarkak's severed head, this blood etches her sword like an acid immersion. She whips the viscous liquid from the blade, and it leaves behind a pseudo-Damascus pattern of glowing red. The barbarian feels the new power imbued in her weapon.

The Vrocks put up a fight that sees Krieg and Quagoon both fall bleeding to the ground, picked at by the barbed beaks of the fiends, but they assist each other with potion and spell as Vola and Damaia stay upright - just.

Krieg has the final blow of the ferocious combat, crushing a demon skull beneath his heavy boot and spraying maggot brains across the park square. Everyone takes a deep breath, suddenly feeling the extent of their efforts and wounds.

But with Lord Shinonome still out there, they can't rest for long. Vola ropes together the heads of Tarkak and two Vrocks, and the gang heads up the stairs to hire a carriage to take them to Shinonome's penthouse. They find one waiting for latenight revellers on a street full of night life and Vola bribes the loquacious driver into silence.

Inside the carriage, our adventurers bandage themselves and prepare for the final showdown.

When they approach the gothic apartments wherein Shinonome resides, Krieg tells the driver to circle the block and find somewhere in the shadows to deposit them. Vola tells the driver to drop them off at the front, and since her gold is resting in his pocket he listens to her. The party steps from their carriage to be greeted by an armed doorperson.

When he asks their business in the building and is told they are guests of Lord Shinonome, he asks nothing further - but does warn them that the last group of powerful-looking motley who arrived for a demon orgy did not leave looking the same.

Krieg slips the fellow some money and recommends he take the rest of the night off.

They are let into the lobby. Shinonome occupying the penthouse, they choose one of the two large curving staircases to ascend, but find it only goes up to the third of four floors!

Obviously, there is no solution other than to bash a hole in the curved wall of the stairwell landing. Its curve being the opposite of that of the other stairwell, our adventurers figure there must be a space behind it!

The nearest occupant of the building pokes her grey head into the hallway to see what is going on as Krieg rips the wall panel open. He convinces her that it's none of her business - and one must hope that her heart is stronger than her appearance suggests, since we all know the methods of persuasion Krieg employs.

Sure enough, the wall reveals a cylindrical room beyond, extending from the ground floor to a glass dome at the top of the floor above them. A tree stands in the center of this space, and the dim moonlight reveals the shapes of furniture upon the ground beneath it.

Krieg hammer a piton into the floor and the party climbs down a rope to the floor of this secret room.

An arched double door to the outside at the far end of the room is mirrored by a slightly smaller door towards the inside of the building. While Quagoon begins looking at some books in a shelf, Krieg goes over to this second door and claps his divine wristbands together. The thunderous impact warps the door's hinges and Krieg rips it off, revealing a small chamber beyond a thin copper fence. This fence is torn out and our adventurers cluster into the room, lit as the rest of the building with violet floor lights.

A clear orb set into the wall activates latent magic when someone touches it, and the room begins to rise!

It rises up, rotating 180 degrees, towards another set of double doors, which are opened from the other side by none other than Lord Shinonome himself!
