Are there also two versions of the columns in front of the bookshop?

@embracing-the-ineffable has a great post about clue hunting and inconsistencies. The latest one they found, the coffee shop board appearing in the middle of a scene, was great. I'll also humbly propose a new one : that there are two versions of the columns in front of A.Z.Fell & co. Please bear with a stupid amount of screenshots with time codes to better show the context. Here is every appearance of the front door of the bookshop in episodic order. Episode 1

When we first see the bookshop in S2 and then when Jimbriel arrives for the first time (?) we get really clear shots of the pillars. There are two big marks on the right hand column in the second scene, but not in the first.

Episode 2

All clear for all of episode 2, no markings. Episode 3

At the opening in episode 3 we get a clean pillar, and from 39mins onwards when Crowley comes out to talk to Shax, it's dirty. Seems to be pretty consistent within scenes. Episode 4

Episode 4 is tricky because we're in the 1941 minisode for almost the whole episode. But inside of the minisode, the pillar is clean, and when Crowley is handing the boxes back, it's seems *maybe dirty*. Episode 5

Episode 5 is where we see the most of the pillars, and they are clean all the way up to the attack on the bookshop, including when all the traders enter the shop. Then a funny thing happens. We get a shot of Mrs.Cheng touching the right-hand pillar, and looking worried. She's the only person to touch the pillar all season besides the next bit.

During the evacuation, a demon leans on that pillar in the exact spot where it's dirty when we see the dirt in other episodes.

Episode 6

Episode 6 is also difficult because we barely see unobscured pillars even though people are coming in and out. However, you can catch that in the evacuation of Nina and Maggie by Crowley they are clean, and when they leave after advising Crowley I'm going to put that solidly in the *I see dirt* category, but it's unclear. So it seems that just like the clock shenanigans, the pillars are wacky mostly in episode 1 and episode 6. But it always goes from clean to dirty in every episode when it happens. I mean, there is every possibility that the actor fucked up the pillar in the attack scene and then they had to film scenes out of order for the rest of the series and just... didn't clean it? I dunno. Am I going a little Banana Shoelace Gorilla here? You can read my meta post "The end?" if you want to know where I think this all leads.

Dopamine Week #4: Fic Recommendation

My theme for Dopamine Week is "WIPs." And on that front, I have two WIPs in mind: one that I am currently caught up on and another that I haven't gotten to fully sink my teeth into yet.

Recommendation #1: Edge of Daybreak Unbroken by @themagnificentmags

So, I think I began reading Edge of Daybreak Unbroken during the very first Dopamine Week, so I'm glad to be able to give it a recommendation and bring it full circle!

Here's why Edge of Daybreak Unbroken is worth your time:

The premise is Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, New Game Plus. And I love that. I find it has that meta quality narrative where I, as the reader, can empathize with the main character when she sees the outcome of a choice she never took.

Despite it being a game "retelling," it isn't a one-for-one copy and paste of the game's script. And even the events that we see happening through Eltura's eyes aren't always a match for what we see in the game, as she might just nuke the planet from orbit rather than deal with the obvious and problematic trap that lurks on its surface.

The prose is a beautiful balance of matter-of-fact, dry humor, and evocative description. Mags gets you the necessary information to understand what's going on in a very unfussy, reader-friendly way, and then hits you upside the head with a bat as she describes what its like to wiggle teeth loose from their sockets with a tongue and subsequently choke on them.

You really can't help but cheer for Eltura. She comes back to relive all her horrors because she wants Heinrix to stay with her this time (and who WOULDN'T want that?), only she slips and falls into Iconoclasm along the way. Also, I put her in the category of fashionable Rogue Traders because of her coat. She is criminally underrepresented in Rogue Trader art.

Mags is not just a delightful person, but also meticulous. She really wants to think through the lore and the canon implications of the story. So, you can be sure that Edge of Daybreak Unbroken is being written in a way that is thoughtful and deliberate.

Recommendation #2: Omnissiah Forgive Me by @jaal-ama-daravv

Having not gotten very far yet into Omnissiah Forgive Me, let me give you the reasons why I've chosen to catch up on the fic this week:

Pasqal is one of the hardest characters for me to write; his speech pattern and motivations generally elude me. And Jaal's got seven chapters of him? SEVEN chapters? Emperor above, grant me blessed cognition so that I may better write him!

Sometimes, I just need a little break from Marazhai or Heinrix, so why not sample something that isn't Nocturne or Calligos? :D

I've had the pleasure of hearing Jaal narrate excerpts during our live readings, and she puts so much raw emotion into each and every word. It is electrifying. I cannot WAIT to see how that plays out on the page.

Damn, if Kassard's description doesn't come off as an absolute and utter badass. Tall, strong, scarred woman? Not afraid of her emotion? Heck yes.

A shout goes out to Jaal herself for her dedication not just to the story, but also the Rogue Trader community. Whether she's a mod or organizing the gift exchanges, she's somewhere being a positive contributor! And she does all of that on top of one of the hardest real life jobs that I can imagine, so she deserves double the praise!

Analyzing "Demon in the Wood" (book) - Part 3

That's both amazing and creepy.

Imagine being so ancient that you have actually met those figures. While children in the future were being told fairytales at night, the Darkling lived inside those fairytales. He was part of them.

(It's like saying: "Oh my favorite fairytale is Cinderella!" and a guy next to you says: "Oh that girl? Yeah, met her. Not as pretty as they all say". And in the meantime, the story of Cinderella takes place at 1600s💀💀)

Baba Anezka appeared in "Little Knife".

Petyr of Brevno is a freaking Saint. The patron of archers.

Magda of the Black Woods appeared in "The Witch of Duva" and is a Saint as well. The patroness of bakers and abandoned women.

And Eryk has met them. (let that sink in)

Besides that, the obvious secretive life of Grisha is so painfully clear that antis seem to purposefully miss it. They need to seek each other by listening to rumors and looking in secret while most Grisha try to not be found at all.

Antis: "The Darkling forced Grisha to become soldiers and go to war!!"

And then accuse us for not reading the books.🙂

Before the Little Palace was built, the Grisha had no lives, with dignity and normality. They were living hidden in whatever they could find. Nothing was "permanent", like Eryk said in the Graphic Novel, always on the move and in fear. Trying to not draw attention to themselves out of fear of being exiled, killed, imprisoned, sold, tortured or experimented on.

Then the Darkling convinced the then-King of Ravka to allow him to build a home for them (after going to war for him). And when the Darkling went to find the Grisha, they were afraid of coming out of their hiding.

What if it was a trap from the King? What if they were killed?

Very few went with him and became soldiers because it was the only way for Ravka to accept them. Ravka was constantly involved in wars, so for Grisha to be soldiers was the only acceptable position they could have in this kingdom.

So no, Aleksander didn't make them soldiers because he didn't care for their fates. But because there was literally no other duty they would be allowed to carry. Become traders? No one would board their ship. Instead they would be captured. Become merchants? No one would buy from them. Instead they would be killed. Soldiers? Well yeah, because with their powers they would prove that they could be trusted with the safety of the kingdom. A safety the otkazat'sya needed. To fight the wars that the First Army couldn't win. Becoming servants of the Crown was their only option (and yes, the Darkling was also a servant of the Crown).

Okay I got this out of my chest 😭

Eryk seems really resigned that things will change. He's thirteen and hope for a change is bleak for him. He has seen first hand how low Grisha are in the "food chain". An ethnic group forsaken by everyone else.

His love for animals is so cute!!

I just imagine him standing down hidden and admiring wild animals from afar.

He just wanted to satisfy his needs. Stay at one place and go exploring and looking for tigers.

(The Darkling with any animal: "I just think it's NEAT!")

Also, his mother's "lessons" really annoy him. And it seems they do this wherever they go and with whoever they meet(?). Nevertheless, Aleksander was a brilliant child that grew to become a clever tactician and leader. Whenever his plans didn't work out in the Grisha trilogy, it was because he was letting his heart and feelings rule over his mind (aka: the whole Alina situation).

Baghra: "Aww you seem to really grow accustomed with power"

Baghra when her son gained power and position: "HELLO?? 911??"

He didn't let just anyone read it. Only to the girl he fell in love with. Perhaps he did it to gain her trust back. Or out of his love of her. Or because he thought of her worthy to know it. She proved to be strong and also caring. She wouldn't betray his trust and let others know it.

Or perhaps she gave his name to her so it wouldn't be forgotten.

All his life, his mother kept telling him "Don't say your name anywhere. Just don't. Don't let them touch you. Don't."

And yet he allowed both to Alina. It's not about him forgetting what his mother had taught him. But giving in to his feelings out of a desire to love and to be loved.

He loves evergreens 🥺

And let's not forget that he loved the forests so much that he decorated his room with it:

Leigh explained in a Tumblr ask why she had the Darkling's room decorated with trees. I'll repost it one day for you.

GUYS HE TRIES SO HARD 😭😭

The way he was socially awkward as a kid and no one talks about it. When you have your mom telling you to stay away from people and peers then you don't socialise that much and (after a while) you don't how to properly do it.

Is he supposed to be friendly?

Is he supposed to be aloof?

His mother's constant warnings have made him confused about how to talk with other children.

"He'd stopped trying to make friends"

So he was making efforts to make friends and play but Baghra fucked this up and then he simply stopped trying. Reminds me how Leigh said that after losing his lovers, he stopped trying to be in relationships.

Eryk: "Great. Another day for other children to run screaming from me. Just another lovely morning."

And Eryk's certainty that she will be afraid of him.

He smiled with her innocent curiosity. She didn't run. She liked it. And he was so relieved.😭

He couldn't get used to people's aggressiveness towards him. It hurt him, bro 😭

I feel sorry for Annika, man

She's not my favorite character in this book but I find her one of the most intriguing ones.

She has seen things. Lev hasn't. It's probable that he spent all his life inside that camp. But he definitely hasn't seen the way drüskelle hunt Grisha. Annika has and the way she's so overprotective with her sister shows how she can't afford to lose someone else too 😔

The evil villain was ready to defend a little otkazat'sya girl that he barely knew from a bully that insulted her.

Yup. We must hate him.

That just confirms my previous thoughts about how some Grisha only let the strong ones inside their camps. They can't afford to take anyone in. They only need more strength and protection not just random people.

Of course it's a possibility that the Ulle allows them to live there because he feels sorry for them. Throwing out a family is no easy thing.

The way he seems to care for the underdogs. Perhaps because, even though he had great powers, he too felt like one.

How he wanted to sound like: "LEAVE US ALONE!!"

How he probably sounded like: "leave us alone, okay?"

The Darkling is confirmed that he was a victim of bullying as a child.

It's such a far cry from the man that is portrayed in the trilogy. As a child we see him defending two girls (one of them otkazat'sya), he was bullied, he seemed giddy in the prospect of having a stable home and friends and showed regret and sadness when an otkazat'sya village was destroyed. As an adult he's a terrifying leading figure that inspires loyalty and respect and rarely shows his emotions.

It seems that somewhere down the line he hardened his heart, matured and learned and repressed any emotion that could sabotage his plans and heart.

Fuck immortality.

And he's so worried that he fucked up his hopes to stay at camp. He always worries that he'll ruin things. That he's a failure and a disaster for his mother and her plans.

Also, the way he's so afraid that they will fear him and run away from him. He does it "warily" so he still hasn't gotten used that. 😔

It's so clear that he isn't used to this kind of treatment.

Just imagine how many times he's heard Baghra's scoldings to the point that he already knows what he is about to hear from her.

He had one hope and now he thinks it vanished. And he blames himself. For the danger that he'll bring to himself and his mother. He's so hard with himself...🥺

The feeling of someone holding his hand is strange to him. He doesn't know the feeling and hasn't been accustomed to it.

He wants to trust her and keeps finding good things in her as if he's trying to find reasons to do it.

"He had so many secrets. It felt good to share one"

So, contrary to popular belief, I don't think the Darkling was thriving and cheering inside of him for having so many secrets in TGT. Secrets are burdens you have to carry. He gave a personal one to Alina (his name) and he revealed some of his plans to her in S&B and S&S. He was a secretive person because he had to (and because he wanted to be one step ahead) but not because he enjoyed it.

That could have been the beginning of a beautiful friendship (or even a future cute romance, who can say?) but, alas, Grisha were living shit lives and were too desperate and scared.

Hermit Horror Week 2023

Day seven: From Beyond

Summary: One night, some people come down from the stars. Everything changes and nothing at all.

This one is a very different kind of horror, way more meta and sombre and existential than the other things I've done this week, so heads up for that!

They came from the stars.

That was what the villages near the river claimed, anyway. A great, hulking mass of machinery, as large as a mountain, descending upon the rock. It opened a small orifice, like a door, and about two dozen of the visitors emerged. They weren’t really like villagers at all, but that was the closest thing they could be described to, though some had traits of other animals, like dog tails or fish scales. All anyone knew was that they were something different.

And they were the talk of everyone everywhere for a decent while, the gossip spreading from village to village until it reached the pillagers and the piglins and the enderfolk. The visitors seemed to be content staying in the area around the river, clearing out trees and building houses and collecting animals. Houses was a bit of an exaggeration, some would claim, half of the things they were building were more like shapes or rocks or statues. They were built with precision and rich materials, clearly important, but many were wildly impractical for everyday use, bringing up the question for why someone would go through all that effort for somewhere so poor to live. It must be a religious thing, most guessed, some way of honouring their gods. The whole settlement was clearly a village, if a very foreign one.

Some wandering traders made it their mission to contact the foreigners, talking big about all the goods they’d get and the trade routes they’d set up. None that set out to the settlement came back. One of the larger pillager factions sent out a scouting crew to investigate the lot, who shared the same fate. Some others tried, but eventually everybody got the idea that the strangers weren’t to be messed with.

The uneasy peace the land had settled into didn’t last long. The first warning was the attack of the Mansion of the East. The pillagers that survived talked of foes that, when killed, would leave no corpse, re-entering the Mansion risen from the dead, as healthy as could be. Even in a fight, they were formidable, healing wounds in seconds. They demolished the mansion, with only an un-armoured party of 4, targeting every evoker and looting every room. The magic they had – to heal and respawn – was unlike any that had been seen before, stronger than even totems of undying. That was when the fear began to brew, the realisation that the new arrivals were far, far stronger than any of them had met before.

And then, for the next few days, Marigold Valley Village would be silent, with their usual traders failing to show at the monthly market, nor any representatives coming to the Valley council meeting. Though it wasn’t known at the time, this would be because it was taken over. One of the foreigners had claimed the village as his own, altering the town and keeping its people hostage as workers. It was the first sign of a new era: destruction. Now that the settlers had gotten themselves established, they turned to raiding and kidnapping. It wasn’t that these were new concepts, pillagers had been doing the same for more generations than anyone could remember, but nobody could fight back against opponents of their power. Villagers were stolen from their homes, put to working for these creatures, whilst their villages were destroyed. Pillagers would come next, outposts burned, ravagers taken, and mansions slaughtered. Even the folk from other realms wouldn’t last long, piglins being put to work themselves and bastions ruined even more than they already were, not to say how the once great nether fortresses would be transformed into wicked machines. The odd enderman had escaped the End and fled to the Overworld, and would share with others, sombrely, about their empty end cities and a great machine that could kill thousands at a time.

And then, as soon as it began, it ended. The world returned to stability once more – albeit a very different kind. The villages distant enough to avoid the purge learnt new rules – hide inside when one of the strangers flies over, give up all items that they desire, and don’t attempt to fight back. They would see one of them occasionally, but they would only show up to steal a camel or ransack an old temple, and had no interest in harming the villagers. As generations passed, the gossip and community of the villages that once were was forgotten and the silence was all that was known. You would think, when there are less people, the world would seem much smaller. But as the fringe villages went on with their lives in isolation, it felt so much larger.

As for those under the direct control of the settlers, they developed their own kind of normalcy. Disobedience wasn’t an option – in the early days, they’d execute workers in front of everyone else, but later on, people would simply disappear if they weren’t up to standard. The cosy insides of a wooden house or animal hide tent were replaced with glass and concrete and stone and sometimes, even, the bowels of a ship. Work was hard, gruelling days and gruelling tasks – quarrying stone and copying books and mining obsidian. It wasn’t like anyone had a choice, though, and there was food and shelter. Life, no matter how difficult, just became ordinary life. And, for those born in the catacombs of some dank hole, they knew nothing else.

There was a lot of debate, of course, on what the beings were. Most people saw them as gods, with the uncanny buildings and impossible machinery and immortality. Ancient pantheons were merged with the current figures, forming new names and rituals. Each of the “gods” was identified and had their own domain and supposed sacrifices to gain favour with, but also on a more observable level, had an area they were known to live in and activities they were known to do. Some disagreed strongly on this interpretation however, seeing their captors as strong and undefeatable, yes, but just entities like any other. They were the step-up from pillagers – just as bloodthirsty and greedy, but far more technologically advanced.

None of it mattered, anyway, in the end. They were spotted less and less, coming to check up on their workers nearly never. The braver and luckier ones were able to stage an escape from their confinement, at first apprehensive on what their masters would do if they found they had escaped, but eventually realising their captors were never coming back. They had left as suddenly as they appeared. A month passed without any signs of them. A mixed feeling of relief and fear settled over everyone. So many years had passed since the first arrival, over a hundred, and nobody was left to say what the before times were like. whoops! uh, have some Waddle Dee Town hcs from FL. I made like a short description for every notable dee (plus an extra) so be warned that it's long under the cut.

Café-Manager Waddle Dee (Cafdee): She's might be his boss, but she's also the Pandee's friend too! You can often find Cafdee trying to comfort a sobbin Pandee about his food being too delicious. She also runs on like 12 cups of coffee per day and is tired from lunch rush hours, but they make do! Café-Staff Waddle Dee (Pandee): A bit on the timid side and has social anxiety™. mans is self conscious about the fact that his cooking is the reason why the beast pack is raiding the town. His cooking is excellent though! (which is why lunch rushes are so frenzied every day) Commentator Waddle Dee (Repdee): A true announcer at heart, Repdee loves his job and can't help but commentate everything he sees! He's actually pretty brave and energetic, and everyone around town knows and loves him! (even if he is a bit annoying with how loud and often he commentates sometimes) Delivery Waddle Dee (Deelivery): Although he's the youngest dee with a job in town, Deelivery is very hardworking and kind to everyone he works with! Deelivery is in charge of importing all the goods to all the other services in town, as well as mail! Due to this, the rest of the dees often come over saying that he should take a break… Game-Shop Waddle Dee (Tildee): He's the main reason why taxes are so high/everyone is so poor in waddle dee town. A shame that his games are so popular too; Tildee is jokingly hated on due to the notorious level that shall not be named, but he's actually a pretty nice guy! Mans is very honest, and donates most of his star coins to charity/helping other dees! He's also the oldest working dee in town. Item-Shop Waddle Dee (Elixdee): Has a friendly rivalry with the cafe, but they're more often than not business partners. He's pretty new to the business scene, and is great at chemistry! Also the local pharmacist, yes, Elixdee makes drugs. At least they're prescription!

The Deedly Dees (bass-Baridee, electric guitar-Guidee, drums-Thrumdee, and keyboard-Clavidee): Baridee is the leader and the most intense of all 4. He's pretty gruff and blunt, but has the best interests for the Deedly Dees in mind. Baridee's favorite type of music is hip-hop, and will quite literally die on that hill. Clavidee's the 'nice girl' of the group, always excited and going "yayyy!!!" She loves pop music and everything cutesy and pink! Guidee is the most chill and easygoing, and loves lofi, the blues, and jazz. Thrumdee is the least talkative out of the 4, but has the loudest music tastes. In fact, his neighbors have to deal with blaring loud rock music most nights (which Thrumdee will not apologize for). Minion Waddle Dee (Mindee): A kid, but also smaller than the average dee of his age. He loves bananas, and idolizes the King! Mindee is also friends with Gorimondo, and generally a fun-loving child all around! He's also my favorite,,,,,,,,,, Trader Waddle Dee (Tradee): Nicknamed "Trashdee", Tradee is a scammer with an entire hoard of rare stones that he scammed out of all those poor dees. In fact, it's gotten to the point where he's as bad as Magolor… If you can't tell I really hate him Usher Waddle Dee (Videe): Your classic theater kid, he's quite dramatic with the way he talks, even in normal conversation! Videe is bigger than other dees, and it's not because of what you think! He's actually quite buff and works out a lot, and could take on Meta Knight just fine! Of course, no one knows that, but if the other dees did they would probably treat him quite differently. Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee (Smithdee): The 2nd-buffest dee after Videe, Smithdee has spent most of his life oogling all sorts of contraptions, and was the main builder in the construction of Waddle Dee Town! Quite energetic despite his age, he's a big softie and would never hurt anyone.

Wise Waddle Dee (aka Bandee): Unknown to everyone, Wise Waddle Dee is actually Bandee from the future. After learning so much throughout his years of adventuring with Kirby, Bandee decided to travel to the past and help his younger self bloom. That one dee that walks around watering flowers (Rosedee): A gardener at heart, Rosedee is in charge of taking care of the flowers around the main plaza, and is actually dating Elixdee! Her job would be a lot easier if Kirby stopped trampling the flowers and if the rain stopped taking its water back…
