On Meteion and The Endsinger
After seeing a meta I wholeheartedly disagreed with, I had to write something as it has to do with one of my favorite FFXIV characters: Meteion/The Endsinger.
The person asserted that the Endsinger deemed Etheryis unworthy of existing and therefore wanted to destroy it (and then compared that reason to Emet-Selch's, but I am not getting into that here. That's a different conversation). That is just not the case. The Meteia visited numerous worlds, many dying, already dead, or destroyed by their influence. They saw the suffering of innumerable people. They felt the loss of their sisters (the short story "A Question of Life" directly says that some of the Meteia were unmade when they interacted with strong dynamis, and that Meteion could feel it). They felt all of that pain, torment, anger, frustration, and hopelessness, each emotion feeding the other Meteia. When looking for a reason to live, they found the opposite. The answer to Hermes' question is this: There is no reason. Life has no purpose. People suffer and then die. It's better to end existence than allow this pain to continue.
The empathetic nature by which Meteion was designed, leads her not to judge humanity as unworthy to survive, but that living was causing them untold harm and that death was a mercy. Meteion saw all of the pain that people experience and she wanted to help. All life in the universe must be ended. Dynamis strengthened her abilities, causing the song of oblivion to spread. Despair became her driving emotion and she collected all of those souls in her nest. There they remained in a constant state of suffering.
By the time the Warrior of Light sees Meteion again in the future, she has lived for millennia with only negative emotions. The happy, inquisitive familiar is long gone, replaced with a being who has seen untold suffering and death, determined to end all of existence. As the Ea found, the universe was going to end eventually, this was just speeding up the process. But Meteion saw what she was doing as a kindness. She constantly questions why anyone would want to suffer and why the Scions won't accept her gift. In her eyes, anything positive experienced in life is fleeting. As she tells you all "All life is destined to end. Why choose to prolong your suffering?" She doesn't see Etheryis as unworthy, she sees it as rejecting her offer of a merciful end to a lifetime of pain.
The first time we hear Meteion, she is framed as a villain. The Echo allows you to hear her and glimpse Etherys in flames. The Final Days returning because you killed Zodiark. A setup to a big bad hellbent on destruction. And while yes she is trying to destroy everything, it's not so simple. Nothing in Endwalker is. In the end, the song of oblivion is stopped. An opening is given because even in the darkest despair, hope can be found. As you walk through the recreations of dead worlds, losing your friends one by one until you are alone, you are told not to give up, not to give into the despair that created this place. Guided by the voices from your journies so far, of those you've lost, of those who've fought beside you, of those who are waiting for your return, you meet Meteion. With the help of your once enemy, you prove that Meteion does not have full control of Ultima Thule. You and your friends stand united, proof that hope can conquer despair.
But this moment freed only one Meteion, the rest are still consumed by despair. The Endsinger is born because as a collective, the Meteia cannot grasp that there is enough hope left in the universe to silence the despair. And so her song continues, but only for now.
In the end, you defeat the Endsinger with the help of party-finder adventures from beyond the rift and the power given to you by your friends' prayers. You alone do not defeat the avatar of despair, it is an effort of many. And then you finally get a chance to see Meteion again. Just like the first time you meet, you share your feelings. And with that, she finally sees what you have been telling her. Yes, there is pain and suffering in life, but there are moments of happiness, of joy, of love. The "kindness" she wanted to give ignored the fact that life could never be one thing. The negative feelings she and her sisters had created an echo chamber, drowning out the ability to see the good in life. Life isn't only good or only bad. And no one's life will be exactly the same as someone else's. At the end of her journey, she discovered the answer to the question she was created to answer. Somehow, thousands of years later, the answer is almost the same: There is no one meaning to life, there are many. And so her song changes. A song of hope to fill the universe once more with life.
In Meteion's last scene with the Warrior of Light, she has one of my favorite lines of dialog ever. It's something that has stuck with me and will likely stay with me long into the future: "You gather pieces of happiness, precious and fragile, only to lose them. Then start again. On and on it goes, until death takes you into its gentle embrace." As someone with bipolar disorder who can have some really nasty bouts of depression, this quote, and much of Endwalker, feel incredibly personal to me. And because of previous things, the thought of death being a merciful end resonates in a way I wish it didn't. Meteion looked at countless worlds and thought "There is no reason for living, it's better if existence is ended". After your final fight, and a final look at your life up to this point, that feeling has changed, "Life might have struggles, and people may suffer, but even in the darkest of times, there is hope." So no, Meteion didn't judge Etheirys as "unworthy of existing", she saw it as just another planet full of people to "save" from their suffering.
I want to talk about this more (but good lord this is already so long), but I'll save that for another time. I'll leave it as this: Happiness and joy can be fleeting. It can seem like depression and darkness will last forever. But with the help of your community and family (in whatever form it takes), light can always be found in the darkness. Hold on to those moments that matter and hold on to the people you care about and together, hope will win.

Question for Beyblade Metal: if you could have given the Star Fragments to previous characters instead making new characters, who would it been and why?
Hi!
Good question. I've never considered this before but it's a really neat idea. Thanks for the ask!
Edit: This ended up being a loooong since I decided that some of the story beats didn't work with the character changed so I basically rewrote Metal Fury. Sorry for the long response and for straying so much from the topic, but I felt that it was relevant sicne I can't just change the major characters without it affecting the plot at least a little.
I would keep Gingka, Kyoya and Ryuuga/Kenta's Star Fragments the same since their arcs played out well enough that I can't imagine anyone taking their places.
For the winter Star Fragment, the two main candidates I can think of are Masamune and Benkei (Monoceros and Taurus). I am tempted to say Masamune but I think it would be great for Benkei's arc too, and Masamune will be the red herring just like he was in canon. It would give Benkei a way to compete with the main crew of Metal Fury and show how far he's come since his introduction in the first season.
Another reason is that all the seasonal bladers have their constellations best seen in the second months of their respective seasons, except for Kenta which is third. This symbolizes that they are the second generation of legendary bladers — the first being the ones from history — and Kenta is a third generation since he received his Star Fragment from Ryuuga. Similarly, Taurus is also best seen in January, same as Orion, while Monoceros is best seen in Februrary. Masamune would be a better pick from a meta perspective if there was a third generation of legendary bladers.
Anyway, it would be the last Star Fragment to be awakened in the season; I would play up Benkei's insecurities starting from the Tag Team Tournament arc and that would be the thing to hold him back for the majority of the season, despite all his efforts, until the Better Island Tournament. I dunno who I would choose to be his opponent in the finals — maybe Kenta for old times' sake or Masamune since either would boil down to who is the legendary blader amongst them. The one I'm leaning towards the most, though, is Kyoya. It would be so thematically appropriate, since Benkei has always been Kyoya's number one supporter and he's the one Benkei feels the need to prove himself to the most. I don't remember if Kyoya is there in canon or not, but if he isn't, I would just place his return earlier. But more on that later.
Regardless, this would be the time for Benkei to overcome his feelings of having fallen behind the rest of the group and that would help him awaken the Star Fragment.
Since King won't exist in this AU, Masakune can have his breakdown moment with someone from Team Dungeon or Gingka.
As for the solar system bladers, well, that's a less obvious choice. Also, most of the new characters have a reference to their planet in their beys. Jupiter and Saturn are the Roman names of Zeus and Kronos in mythology which are also the names of Dynamis and Aguma's beys respectively. Mars is the Roman name of the Greek god of war, Ares, and King's Bey is called Variares and is also called the "Sword of the Gods" in canon myths. Not to mention their personalities but I'll talk about them separately.
Since Yuki wouldn't exist in this AU, there needs to be a different way for everyone to learn about Johannes, but honestly, the start isn't that much different. Pegasus and Leone evolve the same way, Madoka and Benkei recall the night they got their Start Fragments and Gingka and Ryo make the connection to the Koma Village legend. At first, they don't really take any action on it but they do keep an eye out for any strange occurrences in the news and tell everyone they know to do the same.
(Because of this delay, Yuu and Tsubasa are able to leave on their training journey together with only words of caution from Ryo and Hikaru)
Then, Johannes attacks Gingka to try and steal Pegasus. He fails but manages to escape, and the gang decide that he could be a danger to other people as well so they search for him. They eventually find him and overhead him talking to Pluto and discover the Nemesis cult through that instead.
Then they discover the island where they find Ryuuga and things play out similar to canon except there's no Yuuki, so they only discover one legendary instead of two. Kenta begins to consider leaving the group but he stops because he isn't sure if following Ryuuga is a wise option since he could probably leave him to die somewhere and succeed.
Fast forward to the Tag Team tournament and since Yuuki isn't here to be Gingka's partner, Kenta gets to do that instead. Except Gingka does pretty much all the work with his new bey, further reinforcing Kenya's feeling of uselessness, much like Benkei. Their first battle is Da Shan and Chi Yun instead of Chao Xin and Mei Mei.
Instead of the Beylin Fist not existing at all, I decided to make them antagonists for this one arc. So Aguma still exists and is still insanely powerful, so he eventually gets to the semifinals where he has to fight Chao Xin and Mei Mei. This battle helps Chao Xin awaken his Star Fragment and become the legendary blader of Saturn.
The reason I chose Chao Xin is because in astrology Saturn is associated with obligation, structure, rules and ambition to name a few (according to Google, correct me if I'm wrong). These values define Aguma's character in Metal Fury but in Chao Xin's case, it would be less about him learning these things and more about reinforcing the lessons he has learned in the previous season and showing how much he has grown since them.
Because Aguma wouldn't have a Star Fragment, the Beylin Fist would lose, but Chao Xin would extend an olive branch to dissolve this centuries long feud anyway, saying that they aren't their ancestors and they don't deserve to be ostracized for something they personally didn't do, to show how much he has grown and matured since his introduction in Metal Masters.
Virgo would becomes Scythe Virgo since, you know, Saturn is the Roman name of Kronos and Kronos usually has a scythe. (Totally not me being lazy with the bey designs, definitely not.)
Moving on to the Destroyer Dome arc. Since there's no King, the legend of Variares would be just used to explain Destroyer's origins since it was modeled after Variares. Also, in this version, Julian would also be participating in the Destoryer Dome as he would be among the people who aided financially for the stadium's construction. And instead of first going to Italy or wherever else they went, and they go straight to America.
(Sadly for Gingka, they still don't get to participate).
So we get to re-meet Team Dungeon, Tsubasa and Yuu — who is sulking because he didn't get a last minute free pass from the WBBA since he's not their employee and using him to find a legendary blader would technically be child exploitation and why would they bother with that when Tsubasa is right there with his already great past record as their special agent? — the Eonis guy still exists, King does not (I feel the worst for this one) and Team Lovushka and Team Garcia are there too.
The first round goes pretty much the same, except Julian is there to contrast how the Garcias didn't change from the second season, although it is acknowledged that their poverty is an actual issue and they're not being evil for the sake of being evil. They're trying to survive; it's just that they're trying to screw everyone else over in the process. Maybe Julian even decides to take a chance on them and gives Argo a job — the only Garcia he can legally hire since the rest are below 18 imo. I chose Julian for this since they worked together in the past so Julian should know why they do what they do and after he almost lost all his wealth, he should be able to at least sympathise with them. Anyway, the Garcias need a better conclusion than canon.
Onto rounds two. Since King doesn't exist and Jigsaw is not interested in fighting at all, Masamune and Lera throw hands instead since they missed their chance to battle in the World Championships in Metal Masters (also so that the tiny rivalry they were beginning to form actually goes somewhere, even if it isn't in this season). Julian realizes that they're not just competing but also trying to find the Star Fragment, so he remains neutral for a whole, further spurring on Lera and Masamune's fight since they just want something done already. That is, until they decide that Jigsaw is being way too smug and decide to team up to take him down a peg. Similar to canon, Jigsaw obliterates everyone except Julian and Masamune.
The final round is where it gets interesting. Jigsaw eliminates Zeo and Toby, and goes into hiding. This annoys Julian since he believes that a battle needs to be fought valiantly with one's full strength, regardless of who your opponent is. We get a few flashbacks to Julian's battle with Da Shan in Metal Masters to show that this is where those feelings originate from. These strong feelings awaken his Star Fragment and Julian pretty much destroys Jigsaw easily.
Sicne Variares is modeled after the mythology Ares, with, you know, attack and defense modes symbolizing a sword and shield, Destroyer's new design would be similar to Variares. The Fusion Wheel would have a different name though, idk, maybe something like Paladin Destroyer or Knight Destroyer to fit with Julian's emperor theme.
Then, Tsubasa, Masamune and Julian have a battle royale. Masamune gets defeated, the stadium breaks and we get the hamster wheel scene with Tsubasa ans Julian instead. Instead of an exposition about Julian's past, we get a flashback to their first meeting aka the Dark Power shenanigans, and they talk about how far they've come since then and that they finally got to battle all out in a tournament after all, bringing closure to that arc as well.
The reason I chose Julian this time is because the planet Mars is associated with strength, passion, valor, energy, etc which are qualities Julian shows as well even if they aren't always apparent. His arc, much like Chao Xin, is more about reinforcing his previous growth than changing anything about him now.
Planet Jupiter is associated with protection (I'm saying this based on Google, correct me if I'm wrong). In Roman Mythology, Jupiter was considered a protective deity as well. We see this with Dynamis being the guardian of his temple and I think it parallels Hyoma being the guardian of Koma Village. In my version, Koma Village would play an important role in the protagonists learning what the hell is even going on since that's considered to be the origin of beyblade itself. Not to mention, it would help flesh out the location a bit more, since we only saw the areas surround the village in Metal Fusion but not the actual village itself.
I picture it starting with Mist Mountain, even though there is no Dynamis. Similar to canon, there would be various traps in the mountain to prevent intruders from reaching the temple at the top and it would essentially be a race between the protagonists and the antagonists to reach the top. Once they do get to the top, they find ancient scripts in a language so archaic that it's almost impossible to decipher. Johannes's group steal the tablet and get away with it, but Madoka manages to snap a picture of it before. Gingka finds the script a bit familiar and makes the connection to Koma Village, so the gang heads there while giving Hyoma and Hokuto a heads up to start looking for clues.
Once they gets there, we get a brief reintroduction to Hyoma since it's been ages, and then the characters would start searching for clues in Koma Village's library. We would also see the village more populated since the people decided that it's safe to return now that Ryuuga and Doji have been defeated and a whole year has passed without any similar incidence.
Meanwhile, Doji — without showing his face on-screen — would make the connection to Koma Village sicne he invaded that place twice and probably did extensive research beforehand. So Johannes, Pluto and Cygnus would make their way to the village as well and start attacking the place, demanding that they give him the information or he would destroy the place. The gang tries to stop him while Hokuto continues to search for information, but they aren't powerful enoguh to defeat Pluto just yet.
Eventually, seeing the place he's worked so hard to protect being threatened and attacked like this again makes Hyoma snap and his desire to protect everyone makes the Star Fragment awaken and he manages to defeat Pluto with his newly evolved Aries.
I decided to just give Aries Jupiter's Fusion Wheel since the four metal balls in the Jade Fusion Wheel are supposed to represent the rings of planet Jupiter, which have four components. So Rock Aries turns into Jade Aries.
After this, Hyoma decides that they need more information on how the legend went down to see if they can learn anything else, but Hokuto tells Hyoma to leave that to him and to train with his new bey instead sicne he believes that the enemy will only get stronger and stronger from here on out.
(Alos, since there's no magical vision of their ancestors, they have no clue what the planetary legendary bladers are supposed to look like.)
For the next one, the candidate I have in mind is a bit out of the way, but hear me out. Mercury is associated with communication, rationality, adaptability, variability and thinking. It's no wonder that Yuki is the legendary blader of Mercury in canon, even without considering that Mercury in Roman mythology is the messenger of the gods and guess what is Yuki's main role in Metal Fury?
Anyway, the person I chose to replace Yuki with is Sora. I imagine that he would appear in Beyster Island as a competitor. He would eventually get to fight Kenta in the tournament and we would see flashbacks of Kenta teaching Sora way back in Meral Fusion. Sora would defeat Kenta, showing how far he has come since then.
While preparing to leave, Kenta would run into Gingka and they would have a conversation about why Kenta left, similar to canon. I feel bad about removing the Gingka vs Kenta fight sicne it was such a good battle, but I think they're close enough friends that they can come to an understanding even without that. Besides, it's been a long time since we've seen Sora so this fight would serve to not only show his growth but also to reintroduce him as a character.
Then, Sora would fight Gingka. Finally, after all this time, he would get to fight his role model. Sora would way more analytical and adaptable now, having built up on the foundation Kenta gave him in Metal Fusion. So, while it wouldn't be as apparent as Yuki, he would still fit the values mentioned above.
I think Gingka would win this fight since showing up out of nowhere and defeating Kenta and Gingka would be a bit much. Not to mention, it would show Sora that no matter how far he has come, he still has something higher to strive towards. However, he would awaken his Star Fragment during this fight.
Since Anubis's Fusion Wheel is modeled after Vulcan, which was a planet proposed to exist in Mercury and the Sun but was later disproved, I would make Sora's Pegasus evolve into Mercury Pegasus. I would get rid of the stripes in the design since they remind me of Anubis, and I would make the shape less like a feather give it a bit more rounder and flowy design as a nod to the element mercury which is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.
Lastly, for Venus, I would choose Yuu. Venus is often associated with love (platonic or romantic) , relationships, harmony, beauty and the urge to sympathize with and unite with others. In canon, the themes of friendships and relationships were explored with Tithi well enough, but I feel like they could just as easily be explored with Yuu. Not only is he someone who sees something wonderful in almost anything but he is also able to easily sympathize with and befriend others, even managing to befriend Doji to a certain extent.
I have no clue how he would awaken his Star Fragment though. I think that Doji would take a more proactive role this time around, mostly because it's Yuu and he wants to mess with his head almost as much as he wants to mess with Ryuuga. Doji would probably be searching for the last fragment too, since they have literally only one and that is the one Nemesis got, so finding that last fragment is doubly important. He would run into Yuu and Tsubasa by chance and decide to mess with Yuu a bit because Fiji's thw actual worst. Tsubasa tries to fight him off while Yuu recovers from the whiplash of seeing him alive, but Doji's gotten much stronger since then and Tsubasa is struggling. I think Doji mocking what little understanding they used to have back in Metal Fusion would be enough to snap the Star Fragment into action. Flame Libra becomes Death Libra, because I think the complicated bey design suits Yuu since we all know how tactical he can be when he wants. (Seriously, just look at the wiki page. That Fusion Wheel is way more complex than I thought.)
Doji would eventually retreat once Yuu becaomes the legendary blader of Venus, because he knows that he has ruined aby chances he might have had of recruiting Yuu to their side, not that Yuu is stupid enough to fall for that a second time nor would he just abandon his friends for a guy like Doji.
I imagine that, since none of the legendary bladers side with the Nemesis cult this time, they would have some time to actually plan things since the cult wouldn't have the other Star Fragments to accelerate Nemesis's revival. They would, however, make the legendary balders fight the fodder enemies to gather energy for Nemesis once the protagonists do decide to attack their fortress. There would only be one battle since they would have had the time to actually plan stuff instead of speed running the preparation phase of the invasion. Ryuuga dies, Kenta gets the Star Fragment and they all play a role in the final battle instead of it being just Gingka eith the power of the whole world on his side.
Damn, this turned out longer than I thought it would. Sorry for basically writing out a fanfiction, but I figured that I should go forward with how things would change if I did change the main characters. Sorry!
#mfb#metal fight beyblade#beyblade metal fight#ask#i ain't tagging all these characters#i was thinking of choosing Hikaru for a position#but i like that she chose to do something else with her life and is actually content with it#plus she would probably be rusty after all this time#practice could fix that but still#she would play a more important role in organizing the search efforts#since everyone knows that she has more brain cells than Ryo#and would be more likely to believe her about an oncoming threat predicted based on legends and stories#anyway#thanks for the ask#I really enjoyed typing all this#but sorry about how long it got#so yeah#Metal Fury would be a lot less about bringing new characters and themes#and more about bringing a closure to the ones built up in the past two seasons#which i hope would give it a more “finale” feel

The fascination I have with him is that, to me, he was always beneath me. AC6 treats the player like they’re the best pilot this side of the singularity, and leaving aside the meta angle of games having to deal with ‘in the timeline of the game the player never fails a mission’ as a problem, is that it portrays many other characters as being of lesser skill than the player’s avatar.
This man, who I saw in maybe 3 to 4 missions in each playthrough, hated me so much that he quite literally shed his humanity just to be able to have a chance at kicking your ass. And unlike the example of Zenos frim ff14, a character who is *introduced* as unbeatable in your current state and by the end of his story becomes an opponent so far removed from any other you have faced that he canonically kills you at least twice during the duel and you only survive due to Dynamis, Iguazu was never anything special even *after* he shed his human form.
I took him and ALLMIND down with the same build I created to defeat Ibis in my first route (and, barring the Escort the Mining Ship mission on route 3, used in almost every mission after that), and did it first try. Ayre took me over an hour with long breaks to clear my head between tries. Walter took me multiple back-to-back attempts. But Iguazu just never even registered as a threat on my radar, so much so that when he showed up in the third ending, I felt no sense of victory after taking him down yet again.
There was nothing he could do to match 621’s skill, and if I’m taking anything away from my experience with the game, it’s that hate consumes utterly if you don’t have the introspection necessary to catch yourself before you take the leap into oblivion.
I think more games ought to give you a dedicated hater. I really enjoyed the Iguazu experience in AC6. It was on sight every time. This is how it should always be.

Chewing on it a bit and I think I know how/why Aeryn’s got a bit of low grade empathic sensitivity, but it doesn’t really get formed/controlled well until much later. And it comes down to akasa/dynamis and other extraordinary events over time.
Pre-Calamity, Aeryn couldn’t make magic work. It was quite distressing for her on numerous levels. When she began her martial training, her instructor’s witchy wife had Aeryn learn to tap into akasa instead of aetheric manipulation; mostly an intuitive, non-scientific use, as it’s a very not-well-known phenomena, but it worked. Akasa is a reason why she’s so effective in combat; she’s always been using that energy to push beyond limits, fueled by her emotions.
But it also opened her up to emotions in general, so when her Echo was triggered, it was a bit of a floodgate. She initially had a hard time parsing her own feelings from others’ strong emotions, or even identifying that’s what she was sensing at times. Proximity helped, as did touch, and also, she eventually realized, knowing and understanding familiar people made it easier to both sense and also identify those emotions, while keeping them separate from her own feelings.
Crowds got very difficult; too many people for too long can make her headachey and snappish as she gets overwhelmed (a fact Thancred noted very quickly and still watches for when they’re in social situations).
The Calamity caused enough aetheric shift that Aeryn could use magic, but by then she’d pretty much given up learning it, until she arrived in Eorzea, where the change was more apparent and magic everywhere to learn.
Minfilia, being friends with Krile and her sensitive Echo, figured out some of Aeryn’s issues early on, and together with the arcane-inclined Scions developed some techniques and even wards not only for Aeryn but for their comrades to use to protect their minds and emotions, for privacy if nothing else. Ilberd, being a man of strong will, got rather good at it, unfortunately; Aeryn found him hard to read in general, aside from the old burning angers just below the surface.
Some of her early relationship flubs can also be explained due to this; her brief relationship with Haurchefant, already happening during a tumultuous time in her life, came down to how she was unable to entirely separate her own feelings from his, until she realized a bit too late what was happening. After the Vault, Aeryn shut down in some ways, trying to block herself off, rejecting any hints of emotion she felt from others (like Aymeric, who had a crush, since then mellowing into real friendship) and keeping herself in denial about her own feelings for Thancred for a long time.
Even then, it took until the latter part of their adventures in the First, and then finally returning home to the Source, before Aeryn was able to truly open up with more understanding of herself, better control and identification of that empathy, and the connection forged with Thancred as their relationship evolved into a steadier mature stage.
Rejoining with Ardbert not only cured the corrupted Light damage to her body and soul, but also improved her control.
It’s further improved after Elpis and a few short lessons with Venat. Venat picked up much of how Aeryn’s aetheric manipulation worked, but also how her Echo--a fragment of the Ancients’ abilities--functioned, and how dynamis interacted with it, based on not only Aeryn’s stories and explanations, but Venat’s own observations and study of the girl over their short time together. Better control of the Echo is only a good thing to Aeryn’s mind, though she knows even if she can now call on some things at will, the ability still mostly involuntarily triggers.
Aeryn understood Meteion all too well, and realized quickly how the familiar’s empathy combined with her inexperience and innocence led to disaster. There’s part of Aeryn angry with Hermes for that still; from his creation of Meteion and expectations of her to learn among the stars, not to mention such lack of thought on unilaterally sending a familiar to make first contact with who and what ever she found…the staggering arrogance of the Ancients (Venat and Hyth included) really boggles Aeryn. If Hermes had simply spoken to anyone, even just for aid in his projects, how different it would all be.
Anyway those are thoughts I’ve had, as I write Aeryn as a low-grade empath, getting senses and feelings for some situations and from some folks; not always correct, sometimes mixing things up, sometimes overwhelmed, often times not liking what she’s feeling off others, needing controlled for privacy and peace, but it’s also helpful at times, and either way is there for her to deal with, like it or not.

Tweaking this question to suit better:
1. Why did they pick their first class/job? Why do they main the jobs they do?
Thaumaturge was her first class and she didn’t choose it so much as it was chosen for her. When she woke up in the desert with no memory of anything except her name, the only other thing she knew was that she had to go get training from the Thaumaturge Guild in Ul’dah. How or why that is she still has no idea, but she suspects it was Hydaelyn subtly nudging her in the right direction, another way of helping her acclimate to life on Source and her role by something very familiar and comfortable, magic. Though now, as of 6.1, Gisele thinks maybe Nald’thal had a hand in it too considering she was a freshly not-dead-anymore person in a strange (to her) new world without a means to support herself, and that guild is literally in his temple.
The thing is, despite her mastering many other disciplines, Gisele is first and foremost a capital-M Mage, it’s fundamentally at the core of her identity and always has been. She comes from a long line of powerful Dalish mages, including her father. Even in the Circle she was told from a young age that she had the potential to be the most powerful mage in a generation. And for a small, impoverished, chronically ill kid from the Denerim alienage who was so powerless in so many respects, that was a huge deal! To Gisele, magic meant power and her prodigious skill with it was empowering to her, for all she was locked in a gilded cage for it. Her hunger for learning, her ambition to be the very best at what she does, and her relentless drive/work ethic is what makes her so good at it. All of this combined with her Circle foundation is why she’s like a fish to water when it comes to the magic Jobs, whether it’s the destructive ones or the healing ones.
Teleportation is literally the only “new” skill she’s picked up in terms of aether manipulation, if we’re not talking about the more overtly physical disciplines. (And I have some theories about why it doesn’t work in Thedas/the Seventh after EW, mostly to do with a surfeit of Dynamis and aetheric imbalances caused by the darkspawn taint, but that’s another post)
Magic has defined the whole of her life’s path, too, for better and worse. Take away her ability to wield a blade or a chakram or a gun, and she’ll live. But take away her magic, and Gisele’s not Gisele anymore. Which incidentally is why getting shoved into the body of a random Garlean soldier was the single most terrifying experience of her life that didn’t involve the Deep Roads.
Re: the question of what she “Mains”. From a meta standpoint, in some ways it feels weird naming a single Job for that, because Gisele’s versatility is her strength in battle and her calling card even in universe—if she were XIV’s Dissidia representative for instance, she would play a lot like Firion, Onion Knight or Bartz, Job swapping with ease in combat. But it’s that very thing, along with the running theme of Balance in all things that’s been at the core of her characterization/story theme from the very beginning in DA, that leads me to Red Mage as her main. It’s the culmination of three disciplines and even in canon one has to study Black and White Magic extensively to begin to have a grasp of Red (this comes up in the Job quests, with Arya). And Gisele already had a leg up to start, even just learning Black and White Magic, because as Thedosian Circle Mages are much more well-rounded than their counterparts on Source. She was trained in the Primal and Creation schools from the moment she got there, and those are just thaumaturgy and conjury. In Thedas she was a Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior, and the way I conceived of Arcane Warrior was always much more akin to a traditional Final Fantasy Red Mage (with a dash of 2E AD&D Bladesinger) than the auto-attacking tin can spending all mana on buffs the way the playstyle actually worked in DA:O without mods.
Aesthetically it’s so Gisele, too. There’s the rose motif, which has been such a very strong symbol for her forever that I even wrote meta about it years ago. And it’s also incredibly stylish, which is something Very Important for someone as image and style conscious as Gisele. And if we’re talking “Dashing Lady Adventurer of Fortune” I’d be hard pressed to think of something more fitting than RDM.
But I also have to mention AST as “co-main”, if only because in universe Gisele is primarily famous for being a Red Mage and an Astrologian specifically, on top of just generally “Sorceress”. Again because of the aesthetics of course (it’s by far the prettiest of the the healing Jobs imo, from AF gear to actual spells), but also because much like Red Magic’s emphasis on inner balance, Sharlayan astrology is also very fitting for a woman whose entire raison d’etre is defiance of fate. Gisele didn’t even believe in it until her rebirth in Eorzea; “I make my own fate” was her mantra, and even though she came to believe very strongly in it and in her role as Hydaelyn’s champion, she still believed in doing it her way, seizing destiny on her own terms and bending it to her will. It’s why Haurchefant is still standing, after all, and why she jumped off an airship to save Ysayle. Gisele has never simply accepted anything at face value, she was always that child asking, “why?” So AST’s theme of nudging fate is right up her alley and it’s why she took to it so well, on top of just being damn good at any kind of magic.
(As an aside, most of her physical disciplines were taken up because of her proximity to folks who were really good at them, and her innate sense of curiosity. She learned Samurai from Hien, for instance, and Paladin from Haurchefant and Aymeric.)

There were a lot of "hurry" and "breather" moments in EW; Garlemald is a long slow build until Everything happens all at once at level 83, and then it's followed by the long slow time on the moon. Elpis, too, is a long, slow build to a climactic moment. And then we spend a lot of prep time, despite the energetic music in Labyrinthos.
So it's not as distinct in its episodic nature as each zone of Shadowbringers, but there's very much a sense to me of "this belongs to this Act, this belongs to this Act for the play."
Not to mention the actual breather moments with the Scions built into the story, little bits of friendship and characterization to see where they are now after ten years and also build up to Ultima Thule.
Overall, the structure of EW is a very interesting one in terms of ebb and flow, in how to balance hard narrative moments with softer ones.
The other issue I think is the backwards compatibility. It's a 10 year story...that was inherited from the original FF14 team in 1.0. There were ideas and rough outlines, but no real detailed plans yet. And then they decided to run the Bahamut/7th Umbral Calamity storyline as the way to rework the world (it was apparently always part of those rough plans/outlines, but when Yoshida took over he decided it was a good way to move the revamp forward; after all, it worked for WoW: Cataclysm). And then the Ascian motivations and backstory got reworked in Stormblood, while the Scions are dealing with liberation and the meta plot took a breather. Garlemald/Ilsabard was also considered for a whole expansion at some point? And how many folks wish Doma and Ala Mhigo had gotten split for better focus?
And that backwards compatibility and compressing originally outlined expacs together shows. They've done a decent job, especially in the ARR slim down and the dungeons revamps to try to adjust some unvoiced dialogue and information, but part of the issue with the late-coming developments like the Ancient world, Meteion, and Akasa/Dynamis are filling in the gaps of "how did this happen and why do these characters fight for all of this? Who/what are Hydaelyn & Zodiark beyond the primals everyone long guessed they are and why are they different and why does that matter?"
Personally I really enjoyed EW; it suited my WoL well for one thing, but also I thought the narrative work was good, and the spackling they did to make it all work together over many different writers and teams over 12 years was decent work.
I'm not sure those originally outlined ideas for Ala Mhigo/Doma/Garlemald would have worked on their own, and in the meantime the Ascian and Zodiark/Hydaelyn stories would grow stale in the background. I can see them wanting to move on to their own new stories less beholden to the inherited narrative.
Do agree though, much as I love Ishikawa's writing and guidance to the rest of the team, she definitely has her favorites, and it shows, though I can forgive in part giving her killed off characters their dues, too. I was just glad we got more reminiscing on why many people were important, not just 1 dude.
Maybe I’ll take Helisent through Endwalker when the new year hits. Normally I have all of my girls caught up by the first major patch, but I just haven’t been feeling it.
It isn’t that Endwalker disappointed me, far from it, more like… I had more fun with each individual part rather than the story as a whole, I suppose. There were sequences that remain some of my favorite throughout the whole of xiv, but as an expansion it felt a little lacking in ways I can’t articulate.

Thaliak, the Scholar 7. When it comes to formal education, does your character have any goals? 8. Does your character enjoy reading? If so, what kind of books? 9. How important is education to your character?
So quick (ha ha I thought before I actually started writing this) head cannon to contextualize some of what I’m going to go into. Also this is a very YMMV head cannon so ya know I like it others may not. But we’re talking about my characters so full steam ahead!
The Echo acts as a hand dandy hand wave for why WoL can speak to everyone and written language is included in this universal translator per Eorzean Encyclopedia 1. However, on a logic level this doesn’t work entirely for me.
Spoken language works in the meta of the world because when two or more people are directly interacting there also all of the related body language, vocal intonation, and aether/dynamis right there to add all the delicate nuances that come with spoken language. the Echo can really just fill in the gaps (I also think this a big charisma stat bonus for WoL because their in person communication skills have a pretty strong empathic boost)
Writing however has more than a few levels of abstraction and varying amounts of time between the writer and the reader. There’s a lot of very specific ways different cultures use written language to fill in the blanks left when you take out body language and vocal intonations. Another layer of abstraction is translation where you go from an original writer through another person(s) before it ends up in a language the reader can consume. This translation even exists within one language if there’s a chunk of time and language shifts. Two examples of this are; Received Pronunciation vs. Original Pronunciation in Shakespear’s plays (look up the youtube channel Shakespear on Toast and watch his lecture series on this and other things. It’s fascinating) closer to home older Millennials trying to interpret Gen Z slang/abbreviations. So given that the Echo is the ability to “cross the boundaries of the soul” there’s a lot of dead space between the souls and the Echo acts more like google translate rather than a nice fat stat boost. I also think some kind of actual experience with the language outside of the echo is needed otherwise WoL could just read all of the ancient allagan nonsense that keeps popping up.
So given all of that, on to actually answering the question.
Art’imis is ambivalent with regards to any formal education in relation to herself. She’s very well aware that she would be an absolutely dreadful student if someone made her plop her butt down in some Studium class. A large portion of that is her struggle to actually be able to read most of the materials. She was entirely illiterate when she first got to Eorzea (her echo woke on the Azem Steppe before she came to Eorzea) because she had no experience with Eorzean common in any way other than what was spoken in the Kuagane port and on the ship to Eorzea. Her mentor in the gladiator’s guild taught her to read well enough that she could negotiate contracts and part of that negotiation was an instance on plain language. That demand however isn’t something you can ask of an already written book and books are kinda important to formal education. It isn’t until she’s with the scions and Bel is learning to read that Art’imis’s own skill starts improving because she doesn’t want bel to have her limitation and so helps encourage her daughter by learning with her. Even after her reading improved, complicated texts, both technical and poetic, took her a long time and a lot of effort to wade through. So technical stuff she can learn but prefers to learn through conversation. Eorzean trashy penny romance novels are generally straightforward enough and entertaining (in both good and bad ways) enough that she enjoys reading them. Which was where she was kinda floating until Hozan and Yugiri showed her some of the texts that they had managed to save and bring with them. Art could get through those easily and had her first solid clue as to where she came from.
So tl;dr for Art: no; ambivalent/ more likely to sketch; in relation to herself no, in relation to others absolute cheerleader
For a Bel, she was raised by a mix of adventurers, post doc nerds, an ascian pretending to be a spook/post doc nerd, and Ishgardian nobility, so she has much more distinct opinions about education/reading than her mother. She started learning to read around when her echo awakened in the bowl of embers because it looked close enough to burning meteors from the perspective of a 7 year old to trigger the generational soul pstd. Learning to read for the first time, at that age, with the echo, presented some interesting educational challenges. Lahabrea was the one that taught her how to read around the echo (for REASONS (™)), the scions and various associated adventurers encouraged a love of reading and learning. If the bloody banquet hadn’t happened she probably would have gone to the Arcanist Guild in her early teens. In Ishgard any mage schooling was a hard no and Edmont tailored her education so that she could step into a role as a schenchal, politician, or just in general have a very solid I can make things happen and keep happening skills at her disposal when her career as a dragoon eventually came to an end. When that career ended very early due to injury she made the decision to go train at the arcanist guild after a lot of conversations with a lot of different people. She finished her delayed thesis for the arcanist guild shortly after Endwalker since the guild mistress had very kindly handed out end of the world extensions to anyone who asked. For casual reading Bel will pick up just about anything that catches her eye or that someone in her extensive family network suggests. When you’re raised by an eclectic group of people you end up with an eclectic set of interests.
tl;dr for Bel: She’s currently conducting research about using arcamina to channel dragon aether; yes and pretty much everything; yes

Hi there! Hope I'm not bothering you, but I always like your meta about Snk (and in general), so I figured out you could provide me with an answer about something I haven't been able to make sense of ever since it came out: Armin and Annie's romance. To me, it really felt sudden, and, honestly, kinde of cringey - could you explain to me how it makes sense, and what other signs Isayama showed to us before the time skip? Thanks a lot for the patience!
Hi! No, you are not bothering me at all! I am a huge Aruani fan and happy to discuss their relationship at any point. I
I’ve written about their bond before it was canon, and before it even was seriously teased after the timeskip--though I thought it was teased that Annie had a crush beforehand, as my posts explain. Armin’s feelings were much more up in the air until after the timeskip. It’s also been picked up on by various YouTube AoT abridged versions of the first season, so plenty of people did notice something about how Annie treated Armin.

Always awesome to find another MFB blog!! Thanks for the follow btw 💙 Consider this ask an invitation to share any of your favorite MFB headcannons👀👀
omg hi! thank you for the follow, dude, your blog is awesome 💛,, hmm my favorite mfb headcanons...
I think I'll have to say the legendary bladers keeping in touch after defeating nemesis. I just don’t think it makes sense for them to split up without another word after saving the world from being destroyed by an angry, ancient god bey. I can’t imagine a more profound bonding activity lol.
it’s not initially the bladers’ idea to keep in contact but the WBBA’s. they wanted a way to contact the legendary bladers in case of emergency since they are the most powerful bladers in the world presumably.
(you never know when the world might be destroyed next. could be in the far future. could be next week. the WBBA just wants to be prepared.)
so they give every legendary blader a brand-new phone and hope no one accidentally destroys theirs in whatever crazy dangerous training plan they come up with.
gingka is the one who suggests creating a group chat with everyone which is of course a terrible idea which is why ryo absolutely loves it.
it goes well for about two hours and then yu finds out about the gc and wants to be in it. tsubasa joins to keep an eye on him and madoka joins to keep an eye on everyone. hikaru joins to supervise for the WBBA and after that no one can stop benkei from joining no matter how many burgers kyoya tries to bribe him with. then aguma argues that it would be unfair not to let bao in and suddenly there are way too many people and the gc is way too chaotic.
the first thing kyoya does is mute the chat, put his new phone on Do Not Disturb and proceed not to check his messages for the next two weeks. he only ever writes in the gc when he has another win against a legendary blader to report and to ask who wants to be his next opponent. other than that one message every few weeks, he doesn’t really exist in the gc.
benkei travels with kyoya from legendary blader to legendary blader but at least he lets everyone know that they’re both still alive. he sends a lot of photos in the chat, mostly sneaky, blurry pictures of kyoya, some selfies and pictures of the many different types of food they encounter. he makes everyone jealous with the last one and has to promise to cook some of them for everyone once he’s back.
tsubasa entertains the group chat w daily updates about everyone’s favorite pet eagle (whose name i don’t know but i’m pretty sure tsubasa just called it ‘eagle’ in the show?? it’s so no one figures out he actually calls it cutesy pet names in private. no one can know). eagle is a riot because she is well trained but also has a mind of her own. i just decided eagle is female. you can play catch with her as long as you’re respectful but in exchange she is allowed to land on your head and try and feed you the fish she just caught. yu likes to message tsubasa suggestions what he should make eagle do next. one time he asked tsubasa to put a wig on her and see what happens. she was very regal about the whole thing.
(i could write so much abt tsubasa and his pet eagle, this whole concept lends itself to so much ridiculousness. i’m going to write a separate post abt them another time.)
you know who the most hilarious texters of the group are? dynamis and aguma. everyone expects them to be as collected and serious as they usually are but. wrong. dynamis lives in a temple on top of a mountain that is protected by many deadly traps. he lives pretty far from human civilization and we can assume he never got many visitors so. i can’t imagine there’s good cell phone reception at mist mountain. has he ever used a phone before? does he even know what the internet is??
same with aguma: beylin fist is an exclusive organization forced into exile and obscurity for many years. their sole goal was to train until they could defeat beylin temple and prove themselves to the world. once again we can assume there was not much surfing the internet going on here.
expectation: dynamis and aguma text with proper punctuation and grammar, do not use emojis, do not understand memes, do not send gifs or anything that isn’t a fully formed sentence you could copy and paste for your essay in school that would make your english teacher weep with joy.
reality: dynamis: OMG!! 😱 The ✨ say you are super 🍀 this week, Aguma!! 🤩 You should 💪 a lot LOL!! 🔮 (trans: the stars say you are super lucky this week aguma. you should train/fight a lot) (also it’s a tragedy that there’s no spinning top emoji)
aguma: k iuss l2g l8er? (trans: okay, if you say so. would you like to go [fight] later?)
dynamis: YES!! (trans: yes)
aguma: gr8 cul (trans: great, see you later)
everyone is so confused. at least they can understand what dynamis is saying but what is with the exclamation marks?? the emojis replacing words? the abbreviations in all caps that make the texts look like a middle-aged wine mom on facebook wrote them? don’t get them started on aguma and the unintelligible mess he calls a text message. does he just take a bunch of random letters and numbers and throw them together however he sees fit? apparently not because dynamis understands everything he sends even if he is the only one in the gc that does.
dynamis and aguma bonded over their mutual ignorance of everything technology when the gc was first created. yu said lol once in the gc and that was the moment dynamis and aguma learned about chat speak which is why everyone blames yu for this disaster. dynamis thinks the emojis are very helpful and aguma straight up memorized a list of more than 1,500 internet abbreviations. no one has the courage to tell them that nobody actually speaks like that on the internet and that they took it a little too far than is normal.
you know these people that are super nice and soft-spoken in real life but swear like a sailor over text and reveal that they have like a really obscure humor? that’s yuki. although he usually doesn’t say much in a group and feels shy around other people, especially when they are as loud and extroverted as for example yu or king, over text when he’s not face-to-face with them he doesn’t feel like he has to watch himself as much. he is usually overly conscious of his actions and words but through the virtual barrier between him and everyone else it makes it much easier for him to just say what he thinks and what he thinks is actually really funny and weird.
yuki actually has a pretty large online following for his fandom blog about various books and tv shows where he very passionately argues over fandom meta and character analysis. because of his active interest in fandom his references can be... a bit obscure and specific. there is always one person in the gc that understands the references and finds them hilarious but everyone else is left thoroughly confused and questioning their sanity.
that is all i have for this for now but i’ll add more when i think of it. everyone is of course welcome to add their own ideas!
#this was so much fun tysm for the ask#i'm really sorry for how long this took me i just kept adding onto it and it never seemed to stop D:#mfb#mfb headcanons#metal fight beyblade#beyblade metal fury#i wrote this

I figured it was a foregone conclusion that they wrapped up most of the mythology, and are intending on starting entirely anew. Even the 12 which I had thought could be a full expac is going to be an alliance raid. They are going to start from scratch for the next arc, and frankly that should be expected from final fantasy, seeing as the games tend to be standalones with the odd sequel and meta lore strung between the narratives.
I expect them to start slow, intro a few new enemies, and they still have plenty to choose from there. We don't know what's happening in Meracydia, we do know the new world has some major exploitation issues with the syndicate due to ceruleum, all of the former garlean colonies are going to be in turmoil and I doubt that's going to end cleanly, there are a few Garlean legions still awol I believe, Gridania is still a racist hell hole and it's the only city-state that hasn't even attempted to confront their issues, ect ect. Most of the early running about will be mostly that, far more 'mundane' things, I doubt we'll get any more than bare hints at something more for a while. It took them until SHB to actually give up more than little tidbits of ascian lore, I would expect them to actually take another 6+ years to build something like that up again.
But there's options for the more fantastical too, there are other shards that haven't had to deal with the calamities the source has, they very well could have developed something surpassing allagan tech and might and may see other shards as targets. There's still the opportunity that remnants of other stars find us like middy or omega did. We know about aetherical beings, but there's still the possibility of more dynamis based beings to contend with. But I will say I'd actually welcome another ascian, as an ally, there are a few we have literally not heard a single thing about yet.
And not all problems can be solved with murder, so I'm not so worried about powercreep. I do expect a lot of politics in 7.0 and 8.0.
hmmm, do I buy a bottle to open to celebrate on the off chance they talk about islands and confirm housing? (or open to drown my sorrows in no islands info lmao)
Really, what's everyone's thoughts on what we'll hear about for the live letter tomorrow? They said they'd be talking about 'the next 10 years', but I imagine that starts with 6.1 and the rest of the 6.+ patches! We know we have big pvp changes, islands, ishgard housing and lotto, new deep dungeon, possible new leveling options, and probably plenty more we have no idea about yet. Apparently there's more music coming in 6.1 than in 3.0 and 4.0??? What do people think we might hear?
#frankly I expect entirely new shit we can't possibly predict because it's not in game anywhere yet#and I hope im right about that#fucking pull some dream zanarkand bullshit out of nowhere or something#idk what other ff game have they not pulled much from yet?#*looks at ff13* uhhhh maybe not that
