Yesterday, another hidden, miniature sculpture appeared in the streets of Budapest. Guerilla-sculptor Mihály Kolodko’s new tiny artwork is Lisa Simpson, a character from the American animated television series The Simpsons, which can be found near Jászai Mari tér. Mihály Kolodko placed his first miniature bronze statue depicting Főkukac (Boss Worm) from the iconic 1980s Hungarian cartoon, A nagy ho-ho-ho-horgász (The Great Angler), in the Hungarian capital in 2016. Since then, both adults and children have searched high and low for the miniature figures scattered all across Budapest.The miniature figures scattered across Budapest are so popular that many are stolen right after being placed on the streets, like the figure of Mekk mester (Master Mekk), the main character of a popular Hungarian puppet-show from the 1970s. Just after a month of being in Széll Kálmán square, someone took the small bronze figure home. The artist has since taken precautions to ensure his statues are no longer removed. Some of the artist’s creations are of other cartoon figures such as Kermit the Frog and the Kockásfülű nyúl (The rabbit with checkered ears).

Fantasy in Victorian England

For my project, I decided to combined information from two of my current English classes: Fantasy as a genre, and the Victorian era. Turns out the origin of Fantasy, as a true genre, as opposed to an element traces it’s roots to the Victorian Era with classics such as Dracula, Alice in Wonderland, and George MacDonald’s Phantastes.  I plan to create an 8 week long (mini-mester) syllabus that approaches the Victorian era through the development of Fantasy. I’m trying to decide additional assignments engage the students in discussion in and out of the classroom: options include weekly 1-2 page responses on that week’s assigned reading, short reading responses due before each class or even a blog similar to the commonplace book. I really want to use assignments that would incite and encourage critical thinking analysis towards the growth of evidence and popularity of the genre and of the Victorian Era itself that affected it.

Yellen, Regulators Meet Amid GameStop Frenzy to Discuss Market Volatility Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen met with fellow regulators on Thursday to discuss recent market volatility and few wild weeks on Wall Street, in which a crush of retail investors sent stocks soaring — in GameStop’s case, more than 1,700 percent — and then plunging back to earth. The circumstances surrounding the trades that drove the spikes, including the trading platforms like Robinhood that enabled them, have drawn scrutiny in recent weeks, prompting Ms. Yellen to convene a meeting with top financial regulators. The risk to investors of the volatile trading was shown on Thursday, when GameStop fell 35 percent. The entire episode has caused Washington’s financial overseers to examine whether markets — in becoming both more democratized by technology and more subject to the whims of social media — have changed in ways that require new attention and potentially different regulation. Treasury did not immediately provide any comment on the meeting. Ms. Yellen, recently confirmed to her post after being nominated by President Biden, asked for a meeting with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “We really need to make sure that our financial markets are functioning properly, efficiently, and that investors are protected,” Ms. Yellen said on Good Morning America on Thursday, saying that the meeting would be later that morning. “We need to understand deeply what happened before we go to action, but certainly we’re looking carefully at these events.” Investors piled into GameStop, AMC, BlackBerry and other assets largely to see how far they could drive up the price, rather than because the companies had solid underlying fundamentals. They discussed their efforts on internet forums and caused wild market volatility in the process. Many of the trades were facilitated by the popular trading app Robinhood, which had to temporarily limit some trading to escape financial problems as huge numbers of stocks changed hands. The gyrations served to underline that a new breed of investor can exert substantial influence, at least when it comes to individual stocks. Robinhood’s trading suspensions also highlighted the limitations of the platform and drew swift criticism from lawmakers in both parties. The S.E.C. said that it was “closely monitoring” the situation on Friday and that it would “act to protect retail investors when the facts demonstrate abusive or manipulative trading activity that is prohibited by the federal securities laws.” While the S.E.C. and, to a more limited extent, the C.F.T.C. have the most jurisdiction over the issues at hand, the Fed has a financial stability mandate and market insight. The New York Fed’s trading desk constantly talks with Wall Street. Massachusetts regulators are also investigating one of the cheerleaders of the GameStop stock’s run-up. Fed officials have consistently struck a watchful but unworried tone when asked about GameStop in recent days. “I’m glad that Janet Yellen is getting all the regulators together to look at what happened,” Loretta Mester, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, said on CNBC on Thursday morning. “We should be monitoring to make sure that volatility doesn’t spill over into other parts of the financial market. But at this point this is not one of those kinds of situations.” The central bank’s chair, Jerome H. Powell, declined to comment on GameStop specifically last week. But he pushed back on the idea that the Fed’s low interest rate and bond-buying policies are the big drivers behind recent run-ups in stocks. “Financial stability vulnerabilities overall are moderate,” he said at a news conference last week. “If you look at where it’s really been driving asset prices, really in the last couple of months, it isn’t monetary policy. It’s been expectations about vaccines, and it’s also fiscal policy.” Even if the shift that GameStop signifies is not a risk to the financial system, it could prod regulators to look into new rules, especially given the concerns of lawmakers who have already called for the S.E.C. and others to address the situation. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, sent a letter to the S.E.C. last week demanding that it respond with an explanation of how the agency will address the market distortions. “The commission must review recent market activity affecting GameStop and other companies and act to ensure that markets reflect real value, rather than the highly leveraged bets of wealthy traders or those who seek to inflict financial damage on those traders,” Ms. Warren wrote. Securities lawyers said much of the response will depend on what the regulators determine drove the market volatility around GameStop, including the role that retail investors played, whether there was any market manipulation and if there was adequate disclosure by market participants — like Robinhood — that facilitated the trading. When it comes to market manipulation, James Angel, a finance professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, said he expects the S.E.C. will focus on what role, if any, big investors like hedge funds played in moving the stocks, as well as whether any high-frequency trading strategies exacerbated the spike. Mr. Angel said it’s possible that high frequency traders engaged in a strategy known as momentum ignition, which involves initiating a series of trades with the intent to ignite a rapid move in a stock’s price. “Any kind of order ignition trades designed to manipulate prices are the kind of thing we want them to investigate,” he said. The role that retail investors played will be harder to address. Many of the small investors who drove up the price of GameStop did so in order to “squeeze” hedge funds who had bet on the share price falling. They communicated their motivations in public, on chat boards and social media, did not hide their intent to hurt investors on the other side of the trade and often boasted about losing money. Barbara Roper, the director of investor protection for the Consumer Federation of America, said policing that type of behavior will be more difficult for the S.E.C. “We’re better at regulating professional market participants than figuring out what to do when the investing population itself is driving this,” Ms. Roper said. The S.E.C. is likely to focus on Robinhood and other technology platforms that enabled the investing, including allowing investors to trade options — a financial product that appears to have exacerbated some of the huge price swings in GameStop. Options are essentially contracts that give the buyer the right to buy or sell a stock at a given price at some point in the future. That type of trading can be both risky and disruptive, market experts said. “The options trading rules are overdue for review,” Ms. Roper said. “There are supposed to be safeguards in place that limit option trading to more sophisticated traders or at least make sure investors understand the risks.” Instead, Robinhood and other platforms allowed any investor to buy options with the push of a button. “The S.E.C. will need a hypothesis. Mine is that the problem is largely a problem of leverage and that leverage comes about by the trading of options rather than individual shares,” said James Cox, a securities professor at Duke University School of Law. “We may need to really think whether there needs to be a limit on how many options a person can have and is able to execute.” [Read more about how options trading might be fueling a stock market bubble.] In addition to the risks of options trading, the S.E.C. may also focus on whether any of the incentives and marketing that lured investors to new financial technology platforms was misleading. What is Phase I and Phase II?

Phase I is the initial registration period where students get the first chance to pick their schedules. The dates for Phase I are 10/28-12/13. After Phase I is over, registration will close until Phase II, where students will get to make changes to their schedules from 1/3 to the end of the first week of spring classes, let students attend and see if a class is a good fit for them before solidifying their schedule for the semester.

What’s a time ticket?

Students are assigned a certain time slot in which they may register for classes depending on their academic standing and year. These are set to be assigned on 10/25 and registration will start soon after, according to your time ticket.

What’s a grade mode and how do I change it? 

Students are eligible to take some non-major/non-required courses on a Pass/Fail grading scale. Students should be able to see this attribute when registering for courses and can change grade modes during registration periods. 

The Pass/Fail option is great for students who are taking elective courses in a topic they’re interested in without worrying too much about the effect that course might have on their GPA. 

What are “mini-mesters” and should I take one?

Fall 2019 was the first semester to offer “mini-mesters,” courses worth one credit hour and meet two or three times a week for five weeks. t allows students to take short courses on both professional development and academic topics. 

A few of this semester “mini-mesters”:

• GT 2801: Intro to Podcasting: Audio as Scholarship, Communication, and Creative Platform (T 9:30-10:45, R 9:30-10:45, 10:55-11:45)

• INTA 4811: International Philanthropy & Sustainable Development (F 3:00-5:45)

To waitlist or not to waitlist...that is the question:

Waitlisting is a function that academic departments may employ that allows students to add to a waitlist for a course that is closed.

Once a student has waitlisted for a course section, they will receive a notification via email if a seat becomes available in that section. Waitlisted students are notified on a

"first-come-first-serve"

basis, and once the notification is received, they will have a specified window of time to register for the course. The email notification will specify your window of time. Students will have

12 hours

to register for the course section after notification.

If you’re interested in taking a class that is full, there’s no harm in adding yourself to the waitlist! During Phase II, students are constantly adding and dropping courses and waitlists move quickly. 

Oh no, I have a registration error! What do I do?

Relax! Most registration errors are easily solved by going to registrar.gatech.edu or contacting your advisor.

What should I take? 

Odds are this is a question you’ve been thinking about for a while, but in case you need a few more classes to meet core requirements or fill out your schedule, here are some Ivan Allen College courses to fill the gaps: 

Humanities, Fine Arts, and Ethics:

 • ARBC 1501 - Understanding Arabic Culture: Arab beliefs and values regarding topics such as religion, society, family, the dynamics between men and women, and social norms are discussed. Taught in English. (Online) 

• LMC 2400 – Intro to Media Studies: This course offers an introduction to the historical development and cultural impact of various forms of media print, radio, television, film, and interactive electronic applications. (MWF 12:20-1:10 or MW 3:00-4:15) 

• LMC 3215 – Science Fiction on Film & TV: This course investigates science fiction as the genre developed during film history and has become one of the most popular forms of television narrative. (TR 9:30-10:45) 

Fulfill HUM and Ethics Requirement:

• LMC 3318 – Biomedicine & Culture: Discuss the history of biology and medicine; popular representations of health, disease, and the medical establishment; and the cultural implications of medical imaging technologies. (MW 3:00-4:15) 

Social Sciences:

 • ECON 4440 – Economics of Environment: This course covers three aspects of environmental economics. First, it considers policy interventions appropriate to problems involving environmental externalities. Second, it explains methods used to estimate economic values for environmental goods. Finally, it explains the economics of depletable and renewable resources. (MW 3:00-4:15) 

• HTS 3022 Gender & Sports: Examines how gender norms and beliefs shape sport structures, participation opportunities and experiences in American sport. (MWF 10:10-11:00) 

• INTA 3242 Soccer & Global Politics: An examination of regional and national identity, development, and politics through the history of soccer. (TR 8:00-9:15) 

Fulfills SS and Ethics Requirement:

 • INTA 2030 Ethics in International Affairs: Surveys the main traditions and theories of international ethics with a focus on intervention and the use of force, human rights, self-determination, and global distributive justice. (TR 12:00-1:15)

Tips & Tricks on How to Design the Perfect Schedule:

1) Meet with your advisors

Meet with your advisor, I’ll repeat that louder for those in the back, MEET WITH YOUR ADVISORS!! They’re here to help and are a great resource if you don’t know what classes to take, or even if you do, they have plenty of advice to offer. Remember that this is a busy time for them so try and schedule meetings with them around peak registration times. 

 2) Try Course-off 

Course-off is a great third-party app that allows students to design their schedules visually and helps with arranging classes in the optimal schedule. 

Note: Course-off offers the option to register through the app, but is not always reliable/ up-to-date so students should plan to register through Buzzport.

 3) Use Credit by Examination 

Advanced Placement Exams, IB Exams, and Placement Exams can be used to bypass some courses, especially pre-req and core classes. Check with the registrar to see what course you might be eligible for bypassing.

 4) Register early 

Check your time ticket, set your alarm for registration time, and be ready to go with your course numbers to make sure that you have the best chance at getting your classes (I’m talking to all of you with 8 AM start times, we’re in this together.)

 5) Be flexible and find a balance 

Most of us don’t get the exact schedule we wanted, and that’s okay! Be open to taking some different classes than you might have wanted, you might find a new topic you didn’t know you were interested in! 

With that, keep some balance between the required classes and classes you’re interested in. It can be tempting to load up on your hard classes early, but try and add some courses about things you’re passionate about so you can enjoy the process! 

6) Make sure your schedule is manageable

This means mentally and physically! Try and find out what the classes are like and what the schedule is like and make sure you can manage all of your classes together. Phase II is a great chance to go to classes and see what the syllabus is like before deciding your final schedule. 

And one tip: Listen to the warning that Scheller really is a 30-minute walk. Take caution. 

Registration should be an exciting time of finding new topics to dive into and getting closer to graduation. As long as you’re prepared and use your resources, registration should be a breeze. Don’t stress about making sure you don’t have any 8am’s or that you have all the hardest classes, just find a schedule that works for you.
