Note: This is my re-write of one of my favorite rom coms ever: My Best Friend's Wedding. Part 1 of two is the Karaoke scene where Julia Roberts tries to sabotage Cameron Diaz and it backfires. This is for @choicesprompts and their Rewrite Challenge! Thank you @jerzwriter for encouraging me to participate!

The crowded bar felt stifling as legions of medical staff packed tightly into its confines. No one seemed to mind, however, since everywhere Morgan looked she was greeted by drunk, laughing faces. All except for one, of course. 

Ethan Ramsey would not be his curmudgeon self if he didn't look like a man about to be waterboarded. His eyes met hers for a fleeting moment, the vivid blue imploring someone—anyone—to put him out of his misery. She stifled laughter, the familiarity of that characteristic disdain of his bringing her the smallest bit of comfort. 

“How much longer do we have to endure this?” he asked as a drunk intern belted a sloppy but admittedly hilarious rendition of I Say a Little Prayer. 

She rolled her eyes, ready to admonish him for being such a spoilsport— just like old times. Someone else beat her to it. 

From beside him, the beautiful brunette laughed—the sound just as perfect as everything else about her. She leaned in close to him, the light catching on a stunning, vintage engagement ring as her hand fell atop his. 

“You're so dramatic, babe,” his fiancée taunted with a smile that exuded pure sunshine. Green eyes fell on Morgan, slightly apologetic. “You'll have to forgive him. He hates upbeat music, fun, and references to organized religion.”

And she was funny, too. Morgan internally had to give her that too. 

Ethan agreed because he indulged Lilac (of course her name had to be beautiful as well) with a lopsided smile that made him appear even more handsome. That shocked Morgan into silence for a moment. In all her time knowing Ethan Ramsey, she could count his genuine smiles on one hand. Then again, the crushing realization fell over her like a torrent. Perhaps she didn't know Ethan anymore. The Ethan she had known never believed in love or marriage, after all. 

Their playful banter escalated and tapered into a modest but sweet kiss. When they pulled apart, Lilac burst at the seams with giddy joy—the type Morgan was a stranger to. It made her stomach churn. 

“Alright,” someone said from the stage. “Who's drunk enough to go next?” 

Drunken cheers and shouts erupted from the bar, each group nominating someone. 

“You should go,” Lilac teased Ethan. 

“God, no.”

She laughed, expecting that exact reaction. Her ring-clad hold tightened on Ethan's arm and something in Morgan came to a boiling point. 

“I have someone better in mind,” she told the couple. Without another word, she marched to the stage and took the microphone from the MC. The crowd whistled and cheered. “Alright everyone, tonight we have a special treat for you. Give it up for the dazzling vocal styling of Doctor Lilac Allende!” 

The cheers in the tiny bar were almost deafening. The pretty brunette was stunned for a moment, glancing at Ethan for reassurance. Expression tight, he shook his head, no doubt advising her not to go if she didn't want to. The crowd, however, was having none of it. A fellow doctor at their hospital all but carried Lilac onto the stage. 

“Rumour Has It by Adele,” Morgan informed the DJ. Then, she pushed the microphone into Lilac's hands as the beat started. Color flushed her freckled face and she looked as though she still hadn't fully recovered from the surprise. 

“Ooh-ooh,” Lilac started into the microphone. “She, she ain't real…”

Morgan returned to her seat, ignoring the glare Ethan threw her way. 

“She ain't gon' be able to love you like I will,” Lilac continued. The more words she sang, the more evident it became that the poor girl could not sing to save her life. Morgan felt a tiny pang of satisfaction at the discovery that the brunette wasn't so perfect after all. 

“Wow,” Morgan laughed. 

Ethan didn't react. 

“Maybe putting her up there wasn't such a good idea. But then again, it's Adele. No one is going to sing that well.”

Blue eyes assessed her like x-rays. 

“Isn't that the point of this circus? To sing badly?” his voice was deathly calm but she could tell there was something more brewing underneath the surface.

At that very moment, the bar erupted into loud cheers and applause as Lilac added a little dance mid-song. She laughed into the microphone, barely able to get the words out. When her eyes fell on Ethan, she winked at him, her spine straightening with confidence. 

“Just 'cause I said it, don't mean that I meant it,” she sang, adding with confidence— “I DID!” 

“But rumor has it, he's the one I'm leaving you for.”

The encouragement from the bar patrons could probably be heard from the hospital across the street. Lilac hopped off stage, still singing, even making her voice playfully seductive. She sauntered to where Ethan sat, trailing one finger along his shoulder as she sang. The man was perfectly still but he tracked her every movement, blue eyes glittering with something heavy and meaningful. The way he looked at her made Morgan feel like an intruder.

The pang in her chest was unbearable.

And with that, Lilac plopped onto his lap, pressing a kiss to his lips as the applause echoed around them. There was no one in the world but them. The way he held her, there was no one in his world but Lilac. 

Morgan looked away.

Eve: Honestly, neither. But I suppose if he had to choose he’d go for wine. I don’t know what he has against beer.

Ethan: It tastes like stale bread sweetheart.

Eve: No it doesn’t! It’s also a classic hockey game drink! On that note though, when we go to games, he never even gets beer. He gets the tiny cups of the fancy stuff.

Eve: Definitely a cruise. Ethan hates bugs with a passion. One time we tried to go camping and he woke me up in the middle of the night and said to help him pack up because he wanted to go home. *laughing* He couldn’t even last one night!

Ethan: You already know why I wanted to go home. The crickets were way too loud and I got bitten in places I’d rather not say.

Eve: *shows phone* Here’s the one picture I have of him from that day looking positively miserable.

Eve: I think a chick flick.

Ethan: Nope, you’ve earned your first strike.

Eve: What?! I thought you didn’t like horror.

Ethan: I don’t like horror, but you dislike it even more than me, so when you get scared you hide your face under the blanket and snuggle next to me.

Eve: So sneaky Dr. Ramsey. You know you don’t have to watch something we both dislike just to get me to snuggle with you right?

Ethan: I know. I like to feel like I’m protecting you from something though.

Eve: Ethan is one of those people that can stay up late and still wake up early. I don’t know how someone could be his age and still function on like, four hours of sleep.

Ethan: You talk as though I’m ancient. Yes, this is where we’re opposites. Evelyn is the biggest night owl and not much of a morning person if she isn’t working.

Bree: So what do you do if she isn’t working that morning, but you need her to get up early?

Ethan: Aside from something I can’t say, I just put a slice of pizza or cup of coffee near her face. She wakes up in a instant.

Eve: You did not have to mention the pizza.

Ethan: Yes I did. You started the battle when you showed that camping picture.

Ethan: Cook dinner for sure. The problem with Evelyn, is that she like to cook and bake but hates washing up the stuff.

Eve: There are dishwashers for a reason.

Ethan: Okay, but what if, for your sake without wishing, it broke?

Eve: Umm…..ask you to do them?

Ethan: Well, you always ask anyway.

Ethan: She prefers diamonds, but she’ll specifically tell you that she doesn’t like big ones.

Ethan: The city. She told me once that she likes to be right in the middle of the action.

Eve: Heeey, I remember that! And you responded by saying that one would think I already get plenty of action.

Ethan: Yes, and I remember specifically saying that I meant in your casework. *pokes Eve’s forehead* Your mind is too dirty.

Walk on the beach or Dance in the club

Ethan: This is the one time where Eve would actually rather do a more relaxing activity. She doesn’t like clubbing regularly so walk on the beach.

Travel overseas or Explore locally

Ethan: This is by far the toughest question.

Eve: There’s not a right or wrong answer.

Ethan: Evelyn likes to travel, but her biggest issue is that she’s scared of planes. I guess I’ll say explore locally, because she likes being in a place that’s familiar and trying something form almost every little restaurant while she does.

Eve: And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. You’re supporting small businesses, eating good food, and because your walking a lot, you’ll burn off what you eat so you don’t have to work out. It’s a great thing.

Ethan: Thank you for having us again Bree.

Eve: That’s my line! I can’t believe you actually said it this time. You never do.

Ethan: Well maybe she’s finally growing on me. *winks at Bree*

I am very connected to my Greek roots and I love the food. Naturally, I showed him my favorites and he fell in love with gyros and tzatziki sauce. This has become his comfort food now and I can guarantee I make the best gyros you have ever tried.

Leader. He knows I like to have control over some things, much like him, and I've always enjoyed being in charge of a team, even though there are many responsibilities that go with that.

For someone who is relentless in his work he is so unorganized! His desk is flooded with papers, for example and he always makes a mess in the kitchen. I always make him clean it up, but at this point I think he just enjoys me telling him what to do and freaking out because I'm telling you folks. ORGANIZING YOUR SPACE WILL GET YOU PLACES.

I don't think she liked me then. Pretty sure I heard her muttering "asshole" while I was leaving. But I think she may have liked my looks because she asked for private lessons.

-How does she take her coffee or tea? What are your thoughts, given that you're a coffee purist

She's not overly fond of coffee, but she likes espresso most. Not too sweet though. What she does like is her tea. Her favorite is black, iced tea with lemon and 2 sugars. She also orders some varieties from a company based in London and her favorite one of those is the jasmine tea. I don't know a thing about tea, but regarding coffee, I'm glad she doesn't drink one of those hour-long - order monstrosities full of sugar and cream that ultimately ISN'T COFFEE.

-What is something she's done or said in the past 24 hours that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with her?

*smiles softly*

I had a day full of those board meetings I hate and I was totally exhausted by the time I came home. She had made my favorite chocolate souffle and then ran a bath for us to relax. And I learned she is an excellent masseuse. When we went to bed after that, she was doing this thing she likes, running her hands through my hair, and I just fell asleep right then and there. It was one of the best nights we had and it just made love her even more.

-One thing you will never agree with her on.

Getting accessories for Jenner. She does it anyway but that doesn't mean I have to agree. Also, she says savory foods are better than sweets. In WHAT world would that be true?!

Olivia : my dog-son loves his bowties so you are not going to ruin this for us, Ramsey

Her favorite show is Lucifer. And she always says she wanted Netflix to sell some original merch. Well, since there weren't any originals, I had a cup and a hoodie specifically made for her with the series logo on the cup and a picture of the protagonists on the hoodie. I put them in a box, wrapped it in red paper and left it on the kitchen counter. In the morning when she found it, she started happy dancing around the house and was ecstatic. Totally worth it.

So Meera makes Ethan spaghetti and meatballs or grilled cheese and tomato soup. It's quick, it's easy and there is nothing like basics to warm you up at the end of a long day, and Ethan allows the carbs and cheese because he knows he'll be getting a workout in that night. Cause the actual meal is waiting for him in the bedroom. 😏

All Meera wants at the end of a long day is a taste of home. That's when Ethan whips up the recipes he gathered from her mom and pulls out a particular comfort food of hers : Aloo Posto. It's a potato curry cooked with poppy seed paste, a family recipe passed down to Ethan by Meera's mother. Watch Meera wait patiently at the kitchen counter watching her husband work his magic and ocassionally drool because this dish is immensely fragrant and waiting for it is not as easy as it sounds.

BONUS : when both of them have had a particular long day they pick up Chinese takeout and sprawl over the couch putting on a nonsense show wrapped around in each other's arms. 💜

Summary: They are back in Miami where their first kiss happened. This time, they are free to do what they longed to do that night. Note: Thank you @trappedinfanfiction for sending the prompt!

“Did you hide the Gatsby theme from me because you were hoping to get out of wearing the suspenders?”

Lilac, clad in a lush bathrobe, sits on their hotel bed, the contents of both of their suitcases sprawled all over the expensive sheets. She inspects a beaded number with clinical scrutiny before returning her attention to the ensuite door. The gentle patter of shower water is her only reply. 

“Because you should know by now that I will never pass up an opportunity to stay on theme.”

“I didn’t tell you about the theme because it was so trivial to me that I completely forgot about it.”

“Lucky for you, I'm a big shot doctor and I get the newsletter now.”

“I wouldn't deem that lucky.”

“My new career status or your inevitable Jay Gatsby fate?” 

“Both. You earned your current career through hard work. I wouldn't call that luck.”

His deep, lush voice echoes around the tile. 

“And as for the Gatsby costume, I'm wearing a suit and calling it a day.”

“And the hat. You're wearing the hat.”

“Absolutely not.”

She opens her mouth to reply, intent on kindling what promised to be banter characteristic to them. However, she completely forgets her reply. 

At that moment, Ethan’s glistening frame emerges from the shower and her attention is completely stolen. Through the bathroom mirror, she can see the hard planes and deep valleys that sculpt his body. They are not alien to Lilac— her hands, lips, tongue, eyes were very familiar with each— but he was still a sight to behold. He fastens a towel around his waist and then—

Striking blue eyes meet hers through the glass in a flash.

Despite all the time that has passed, she feels like the same lovestruck intern she used to be all those years ago. Unlike the first time, Ethan holds her gaze and a crooked smirk tugs at his lips ever so slightly. 

“Enjoying the view, Rookie?”

The glint in his eyes is equal parts playful and daring. He no doubt sees the blush burning her skin and enjoys it. If Lilac knows anything about him, it’s the devilish, smug side of him that emerges whenever he has this effect on her. 

“Partly,” she challenges. Very deliberately, her eyes fall from his eyes down to his chest to the hard muscle of his abdomen. They finally rest on the knot securing the towel to his waist. “Why are you covering up? I have already seen everything.”

It’s his turn to blush. It’s a subtle bloom of colors kissing his neck and cheeks but it’s still satisfying. He doesn’t miss a beat, though. Something dark settles in his eyes as he takes the bait.

“I have to keep things challenging for you.”

“You’re going to make me work for it, Ramsey?”

She’s on her feet now, slowly padding toward him. Ethan holds her gaze all the way through, azure eyes darkening more with each of her steps. 

“I’ll be the one working you, Allende.”

“Oh, yeah?”

Their noses are inches apart, which requires Lilac lifting herself on her tiptoes. 

“Yes. I'm going to work you so hard you're going to forget about that theme.”

He kisses her with such intensity that she is almost knocked off her feet. Though the loss of her balance could've been by his words, uttered in that low, baritone voice that makes her core melt. Either way, Ethan's strong arms catch her as he tilts his head, deepening the kiss. 

“We're going to be late,” she whispers in between kisses.

 It's not a protest but a dizzy acknowledgement. 

“I don't give a damn.”

He has her perched on the edge of the counter now, his hands getting lost under her robe. 

“Good,” she replies but the word is a moan as his fingers tug on the lace of her panties. They're on the floor moments later. Her bathrobe, bra, and his towel follow suit shortly after. 

“You're so beautiful,” he mutters, kissing the tops of her breasts. He continues to tease them, the rough scruff of his beard making her shiver. Lilac moans, arching her body into his mouth. His tongue expertly brings her to the brink. 

“Mmm, give it to me, Ethan,” she begs. 

He obliges. 

Eyes holding her gaze, he enters her slowly. They both moan, staying still long enough to relish the feeling of her body accommodating him. Then, he begins to move, making good on his dark promise with every delicious stroke. Their collective moans echo around the marble. It doesn't take long for his powerful body to bring her close. 

“Oh, God!” she cries, nails digging into his back. 

Ethan grunts and she can feel he is close too. A few more rough strokes and they're both crying out, bodies quivering. When the high is over, he meets her eyes and gives her a lazy smile. 

“What?” 

“It's a good feeling.”

Lilac raises her brows. “I really hope so, Ramsey.”

He laughs. “Not just that.”

Before she can reply, he kisses her. 

“I mean being in Miami. It's a good feeling being back with you.”

This time, she matches his smile, feeling the sun itself radiate from her chest. 

“I agree. It's good to be back where it all started. Though things are definitely different now.”

Smile growing more radiant, she raises her right hand to demonstrate. The golden bathroom light makes the engagement ring glitter. Ethan takes her hand and gently presses a kiss to it. 

“Indeed,” he agrees. “And I can finally openly say what I longed to say that night on the balcony.”

Lilac already knows but she asks anyway. 

“And what is that?” 

His soft lips meet hers in a tender kiss. 

“I love you.”
