Dream’s Coat (TM), pretty please??

@chaosheadspace asked for the same! Here you go, lovelies...

This is probably not what you think it is. Or, idk, maybe it's exactly what you think it is? Because both of you know that I'm actually a little dark angst writer at heart lol. 

Okay, so this started a long time ago (read: in March last year) in a wild and hilarious brainstorming session that I saved the transcript of. So far, this is more of an intriguing concept to make Hob suffer and Dream repent - eventually at least. I haven't touched it in a while; I'd have to really dig into Dream's fucking ugly side - the 10000 years in hell side - to get this going.

It all started with a 'what-if' variation of @messmonte 's Saddest Wank (1889 instead of 1989!) because in that drawing, Dream didn't just leave his gloves, he also left his Cloak. Here, this has pretty severe consequences. In SoM, the story gets told of how Dream takes Nada into the Cloak where they have sex unbothered by anyone's gaze. So there we have a ‘magical cloak’ with space-time special features…

Now here is Hob, in 1889, drunk and sad and wearing Dream's gloves to get himself off in a seedy room above the White Horse. He took the garments his Stranger left behind in a mixture of spite and pathetic hope that he might come back for them. He doesn't, of course.

(Hob doesn't know that Jessamy *has* actually come back to get them and gets to witness what is going on. This, as well, has consequences)

After, he rolls over onto the cloak he has been gripping, disgusted with himself but still unable to let go of the pathetic need to be close to the Stranger. But instead of falling asleep, he falls into the star-studded folds of the cloak. 

And falls and falls and falls. 

He  barely manages to keep a grip on the strangely wispy fabric. It's what saves him, at first. Because Hob has just managed to accidentally yeet himself into outer space. The cloak is the only thing that's keeping him whole and sustained as a living being, as it were. 

(Jessamy is unfortunate bystander to this. She takes off to the Dreaming immediately and informs Dream of his ‘acquaintance's’ mishap. She's worried - she actually likes Hob and knows that Dream does so, as well. Dream though, is still furious. 

“Let him enjoy this new experience then”, he says and Jessamy recognizes the stubborn curl to her Lord's mouth. “May he experience the meaning of true loneliness for a while.”

Jessamy rather thinks that Lord Morpheus is really tipping his hand there about *who* had it right at their meeting but she'd never dare to point that out. 

She has a really really bad feeling about what this might mean for Hob Gadling, though. Since her Lord is so intent on forgetting that the immortal is, above all else, human and as such not made to sustain himself outside of his own world.

And besides, he is a Dreamer. Lord Morpheus will surely reconsider soon and bring him back.

But as time passes, he does not. 

Hob Gadling is not one of Dream's priorities, after all. In the face of the Universe nearly unravelling, the Corinthian's disobediance and its fallout, Hob Gadling gets forgotten for the better part of a century.)

On the other end of the universe, Hob's life is an unending and undying nightmare. He is neither starving, freezing nor suffocating - not that he knows that he should do the last two - but there is nothing around him but the vastness of space. No sound, no smell, no touch but that of the cloak around his shoulders. He is truly alone for the first time in his existence. 

Until, suddenly, he isn't.

“Oh my what do we have here,” a voice resounds inside his head. His perception slides sideways, something breaks somewhere in his mind and then there is the form of a voluptuous, incandescently beautiful woman that takes over everything around him. 

“A human - here! Covered in my Dream's regard!”

She stretches a hand towards him and Hob thinks that space has decided to cease existing. Maybe he's going mad.

“If I keep you, do you think my son will visit?”

Dream does, of course, remember Hob eventually. The horror that rises in Dream, still caught in Burgess’ basement, over what he has allowed a Dreamer to suffer for his own mistake, is as dark and deep and cold as the black hole he has once been cast into. 

After he escapes and has gathered his tools, he searches out his sister.

“Hob Gadling? No, he hasn't asked for me.” 

She falls silent for a moment before leveling a longsuffering and suspicious look at him.

“Is there a particular reason you're asking me this?”

Dream closes his eyes and shreds the rest of the mauled baguette between his fingers.

“He may have. Fallen though an actualized piece of my power. Into space. And I may have been. Too angry to care. At the time.”

There is the rustle of clothes and he feels Death kneeling before him. Her voice, when she speaks, is very soft and very serious.

“Dream? When, exactly, has this happened.”

He opens his eyes. 

“Hob Gadling has suffered my wrath since 1889, sister. I hurt a Dreamer, unprovoked.”

“Oh, Dream.” 

He cannot bear the horrified pity on his sister's face. 

“How shall I -” His words fail him.

“Go and get him back, Dream. Now. Hob Gadling hasn't called for me - yet. If that will help you, though, I don't know.”

Or: A pathetic wank and Dream's canonically bad decision making skills meets the 'meeting the parents trope' but make it eldritch horror. Then add a magical healing journey afterwards an voilá - you get this.

The Sandman! I also just watched Dead Boy Detectives and think I might write a couple little things for it too.

I do! I love discussing characters and theeeeemes and sharing enthusiasm with people. I love hearing what I've inflicted and I'll thank you for telling me <3 Once I started getting busier I found it a lot harder to keep up, but I treasure all my comments so if you suddenly get a reply like, a year later, you know why!

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

It's for sure The Many Lives of Hob Gadling. Everything else I've written except Border Country has ended, like, tooth-rottingly kind and optimistic and love-filled. But lbr Dream is a man of tragedies. There'll be more

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

It's such a personal thing, but Oaths has the happy ending I would consider most wonderful sort of happiness. It's not the fluffiest or most fairy-tale (having written just that also), but this specific flavour of joy and peace in terms of experiencing the beauty of the world around you and being just shot full of love. The happiness of growing things and sunrises. Or Just Like Love. From the Corinthian's perspective. He's so happy with the state of things at the end.

Do you get hate on fics?

Only the once! Fortunately everybody else who has hated a fic of mine has been able to find the back button and gone off to read something else or grouse about it in private, which is the correct way of things. There's no reason, ever, to tell an author you disliked their story. They will not be grateful for it no matter how certain and correct you feel in your criticisms. Nobody wins! Sorry! Go tell a friend instead.

Do you write smut?

You betcha I do! The first time I wrote it for Saint Morpheus it felt so unnatural and I was just making a :| face the whole time but now sex scenes are among my favourite things to write. I feel like I've really cum come into my own with them more than any other kind of scene.

Craziest crossover:

I've never done a crossover! I love reading them though.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so! I mean, not great, etc., but personally I also deeply don't care. I imagine having a job where what I am actually creating & selling for money gets stolen often sort of skews my perspective on my fic getting stolen. It's not a commercial product. It isn't paying my mortgage. I give these words for free and with love. If they end up places I never put them, so be it! Such is the internet.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

My very first WIP for Sandman! I started writing it then joined tumblr the next day, saw some of @messmonte's art, and was off writing Saint Morpheus in short order. Sorry 1989 canon divergence fic! Maybe one day.

What are your writing strengths?

Five dollar words. Long sentences. Big sweeping feelings. Instilling my personal values, i.e. love is real, you are surrounded by beauty at every turn, you deserve the things you want, monologues are a normal and practical form of communication, etc.

What are your writing weaknesses?

God, actually finishing and sharing things, I think. I haven't had enough time in my life lately and it kills me! But it's also such a me problem because I love to worry at and chew on WIPs forever. Writing fast would be so cool. Pew pew pew! New fics left and right. You guys would be buried in them. Man, I wish.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

Can run gimmicky but also I love multiple languages in one conversation as subtext so much - I'm torn. Same as accents in that I suspect it's most cases better to just note it in the speech tags, unless you're willing to go through the trouble of inline/hovertext translations, and then at that point it's a bit If You Give A Mouse A Cookie for me where I'll want translator's notes too, maybe some metatextual payoff, etc.

First fandom you wrote in?

Technically FMA, but that's a story for another day hahaha. Sandman, really.

Favourite fic you've written?

Oh golly. Oaths. I did so much for the first time with that story. But it's hard to choose, which is such a nice problem to have. I think it's easy when you've never written fic before for each new thing to mean something different to you!

As for me, I graduated from college, passed exams and joined to university and started to work as a teacher of English.

English my third language, so forgive me for mistakes, I knew that I definitely did some, even though I am teacher of English, well, shame on me😅

Then in August I watched Sandman and I can say that it definitely changed my life. I started to participate in fandom, which is still new thing for me, I didn't expect that will be ever posting my art and some cringe stuff anywhere, but here I am.

yeah okay messmonte once again has me by the throat... i am having Thoughts about that post!! just imagine, hob dressing up as a werewolf because it's fun to teach his classes in costume for the day. he's got his fake ears, he's got his carefully torn clothing (showing quite a bit of his chest, because... well, he's sort of got his own pelt of fur already), and he's got a fake tail that he'd been planning on pinning to the seat of his ripped jeans.

dream, of course, has a better idea. to everyone who sees him, it certainly looks like the tail swishing along behind him is pinned to his jeans, because it's no effort at all for dream to make sure that's what everyone else sees. but when hob asked him for a hand getting the tail in place dream had instead bent him over the arm of the couch, tugged his pants down, and gotten to work getting a much more fun tail added to hob's costume.

the plug attached to the tail is... big. very heavy, and very big. hob's already whining by the time dream steps back to tear a new little hole in the seat of hob's jeans and proceeds to feed the tail through it and get hob's clothes all set in order. hob's sure the angle of the tail makes it perfectly clear where it's attached, but dream assures him that no one at all will realize. and with that, dream tells him to have a good day and be a good puppy, and he vanishes off back to the dreaming. leaving hob to figure out how to get himself to work when he's not sure he can walk and is even less sure he can sit.

he does make it to campus, eventually, though he doesn't have any time to hide out in his office and collect himself before his first class starts. but it goes alright, the plug isn't nearly as distracting once he isn't moving as much. and thankfully he'd thought to cage his cock before he left, because the plug shoves so perfectly against his prostate that hob's relieved to only feel the ache of his cock trying to get hard rather than the panic of trying to hide an erection while teaching.

what's much more of a problem is when he heads back to his department building for lunch and gets pulled into the casual little lunch party a few of the other profs are having. it's just hanging around eating lunch together, drinking punch, and eating candy, really. but his colleagues keep touching his tail. some of them pick it up to admire it and jostle the plug. some of them jokingly give it a little tug as they pass him. one wants to pull him aside for a private chat about an upcoming seminar -- and quite literally pulls him aside by the tail.

I will, however, give two things that are AMAZING and I'm frankly surprised less people have read: That Which Constitutes Poetic Faith, by @awordybody , which is honestly the best shot-for-shot Dreamling Human AUs I have read in this fandom AND I also get an infodump at the end of each chapter? Delightful. The other is would you let me know?/ I could make some time if you wanted , by BeatnikFreak, which is--surprise--another Dreamling Human AU, about co-professors Dream and Hob. That one is a WIP and user-locked, however. But both are SO GOOD.

i go back in forth on my headcanons about whether hobs not dying status is enough to clear him of the ‘no mortalsxEndless’ rules but ive starting reading the dreaming (2018) and yknow if dream can fuck his great-great-grandniece he can fuck hob.

anyways. hob having sex w dream in the dreaming while lying in bed with his current girlfriend in the waking. shes hearin him moanin abt dream, which is weird but whatever wet dreams be wet dreams. shell wake him up for another round or just let it be cos shes wiped out this isnt about that tho

hob maybe still doesnt know/understand that dream Dream is real Dream while Dream thinks theyre in a fully understood relationship (theyve been doing this for awhile now, after meeting back up in the waking after his imprisonment)(hes still Very Bad at openly explaining things to his mortal lovers), hob just also has relationships in waking since theyre Casual TM (dreams a little afraid of commitment rn) (and Dream can’t physically fuck Be With a mortal in the waking)

Edit: no actually this is a bout weird somno and hob being just totally wrecked by the dueling sensations of his girlfriend in the waking trying to wake him up by feeling him up to go for another round, and Dream using all hos might actually a considerably small amount of his might (but yknow, emotionally all of his might) to keep hob fucking him in the dreaming. the weird relationship status is a secondary concern
