The King Cobra Cluster, M67 // LittleGhost

This is one of the oldest open clusters known, and the oldest in Messier's catalog. It has an estimated age of around 3.2 billion years. This is striking since most open clusters are typically much younger and their stars should have dispersed by this time. Despite that, the King Cobra Cluster still has around 500 stars, and five stars have found to host planetary systems.

Light pollution is so unfair because everyone acts like it’s so normal

The night sky has been so extremely intricate for eons. You used to be able to see the Milky Way and millions of stars. Our water world ancestors saw Messier 67 at its birth and the first hominids grew up alongside it. Giovanni Battista Hodierna recorded M33 in 1654, 229 years before electronic telescopes were invented.

The Big Dipper being the lone constellation is a new development, only within the past 200, 300 years. It should feel terrifying, to look up at the sky and be alone, with only the haze of billboards and streetlights closing in.

What was once a commodity, people have to travel to the extremities of the world to see with the naked eye— there are less than 100 class 1 Bortle locations on the planet now. Dark sites are a visitation of our past.

hi anon, sorry for taking a few weeks to get to this! i don't have a lot more shareable content in the wonder twins gdoc, but could i interest you in some wonder twins backstory? and i'll put a little snippet from a scene after that ❤

kev is a middle child (older brother, younger sister, all pretty close in age); he is from small-town alberta and played his junior hockey in saskatoon. he was drafted high in the second round. of the pair, he is both the more fastidious and the more chaotic one. he has a tendency to care more about other people than about himself.

tanner is from the ottawa suburbs and he played his junior hockey with the 67s. he has one older sister who is several years older than him; she also lives in toronto now, for work, so they get to hang out sometimes, which is nice. he was a fifth-round draft pick who had a big breakout season in his draft+1 year. of the pair, he's messier but a better cook, and quieter and more introspective in comparison. he's slow to anger but if provoked (say, if someone takes a headshot at his bestie) can occasionally go apeshit.

they met when they were on the canadian world juniors team together (tanner did not attend the draft) and just clicked immediately. their world juniors team does not correlate to a real world juniors team because i'm too lazy for that, but they won silver in a heartbreaker, and promised each other they'd both be on the leafs the following season so they could play together again. kev had been having kind of a slump of a season but was :) somehow inspired :) to step it up and had a great run in the second half. both their teams went to the memorial cup, where neither won the tournament but tanner's team beat kev's, so he has bragging rights, but he doesn't use them too often.

“You’re still up,” Kev says, sounding surprised even though he’s the one who called. “It’s like three in the morning there.”

“Yeah, the guys are all passed out, but I couldn’t sleep.” Feeling his way through the dark cabin, Tanner finds the den, then follows the wall until he hits the side of the sofa. He flops onto it, letting his feet dangle over the arm. “I’ve been really restless lately. Thinking about the season starting and stuff.”

“You’re restless?” Kevin laughs. “At least you got rookie camp! I’ve been wasting away alone in bumfuck nowhere Alberta since May.”

This is not strictly true. In June, Kev went on vacation in Miami with some buddies from junior, and he’s regularly made the 90-minute drive to Edmonton to see a PT specialist there. He’s been on several trips to Banff to go hiking and get drunk on Lake Minnewanka. Also, Kevin loves bumfuck nowhere Alberta. He owns more Carhartt than anyone else Tanner knows. 

“Okay but, speaking of, how is the shoulder?” asks Tanner.

“So much better,” Kevin says, and launches into an explanation of the training and therapy he’s been doing. He’s very upbeat about it all, detailing everything his doctors have said, his timelines and prognoses, and some excruciating specifics about the ligaments in his shoulder. They thought at first he might need surgery, but he decided to try rehabilitation; Tanner fielded a lot of early-summer facetime calls to talk through his concerns that it wouldn’t work and the team would be pissed he wasn't ready for the season. But he’s feeling good — he’s started doing some light stickwork, and he’s confident he’ll be ready to go come training camp.

“You better be,” Tanner says. “Rookie camp sucked without you.”

“I don’t know why you even had to go. Everyone knows you’ve got a roster spot already. Well, I guess it’s good for the kids to have a grizzled vet around to teach them how to be.” Kevin sounds so genuinely thoughtful as he works through this that it makes Tanner grin up at the ceiling. 

“Most of those guys are older than me, idiot,” he says. “Except like, the brand new ones. And I do have to earn my spot, you know.”

“No, you don’t. Your spot’s on my line.”

“Oh, you’ve already decided that?”

“Yes,” Kev says. “I’ve had a lot of downtime this summer. I decided on the whole roster.”

“You know McDavid’s not coming out of retirement to center you, right?”

Kevin huffs. “Obviously not. Stromer is centering us.”

Tanner is struck by the urge to ask if Kevin has seen the picture Dylan posted from France. Except Tanner was just looking at the comment he left on it, so it’s a stupid question. He shoves it aside and says, “Sounds good so far. Tell me the rest.”

Open cluster Messier 67, one of the oldest known nearby stellar families. The reddish color of most of the stars indicates the cluster’s age, just a few hundred million years younger than our own sun. Roughly 2800 light years away from us, the stars in Messier 67 are four times more tightly grouped than the stars in our own stellar neighborhood.

This picture of Messier 67 is the product of nine science images in three different color filters corrected with a total of forty calibration images and subsequently mapped into RGB color channels. Images taken with the 24-inch Perkin telescope by two of my colleagues and myself at Van Vleck Observatory while designing a lab for an intro astronomy course. I did all the calibration and processing. :)

brother's best friend - e. kirishima

warnings: none! maybe the fact that half of this was written on my phone should be counted as a warning.

Being Bakugo's sister wasn't easy at all. He was way too overprotective, a dick 67% of the time he interacts with you, and you hate the way he treats your classmates. But he had some pros too. One, he's an amazing cook, and he always makes your favorite food whenever you are feeling down. Two, he has really hot friends. Sero? Dayum. Denki. Cute. Todoroki? You are convinced you will marry him one day. But Kirishima? You couldn't stop thinking about him. Kiri. Eijiro. His name echoes in your mind 24/7.

But he would never like you back, right? It wouldn't be manly to date your best friend's sister.

Small smiles, and innocent touches soon turned into something a lot messier.

And before the two of you know it, you had a secret relationship. Not because you too were ashamed of each other, but Kirishima was terrified of Bakugo finding out. You could care less. But anything for your faux red-head.

Although, out of everyone, Sero knew. So when Bakugo walked in and was suspicious, Sero helped scrape together an excuse after laughing at Kirishima's face.

One of those times happened last week. You and Kirishima met up in the kitchen after he came back from the gym. He was incredibly sweaty, but was still as handsome as ever. He gave you a big toothy smile, before giving you a small kiss. A few kisses later, you were seated on the kitchen counter with Kirishima seated in between your legs. Thank God for Bakugo's explosive temperament, or you wouldn't have heard him stomping and bitching to the kitchen over the sound of smacking lips.

Kirishima gave you a frightened look, and you slide off the island counter, hiding behind it.

"Shitty Hair? What the hell are you doing in here at this hour?

"Oh you know, I needed a drink after working out." You almost laughed at his expression. He looked like he was about the shit himself.

"Yeah, well, I need one too." He starts around the island before Kirishima runs to cut him off. You start slipping around the side of the island before stopping when you hear Bakugo yelling at your boyfriend.

He pushed past Kirishima, and when he turned the corner, you held your breath. Luckly, Sero came from your other side and started distracting your brother by asking him about his opinion of the cabinet colors long enough for you to slip away.

Kirishima grabbed your hand when you got close enough and you both ran as fast as you could toward his dorm. Collapsing on the bed, he looked at you, before laughing.

"I don't know if I'll be able to keep this up much longer, princess."

"Yeah that was too close." You start giggling. "You should have seen your face, babe. You looked constipated."

He gives you a sad puppy dog face, while whining, "Heyyyy. Not fair, babe."

You snuggle into him, and he kisses your hairline.

"Hey, gorgeous?"

"Hmm?"

"Wanna finish what we started earlier?"

Safe to say, you didn't get much sleep that night.

Niche lore again :D what ISN'T niche lore in this game after all... let's go with Paul Messier! One Paul Messier, whom I would assume to be related to Joyce Messier, will be crowned "Enemy of the press" of the year twice by the end of the '60s and "Worst person of the year" in '67. And I think that's beautiful.

I really want to try and make my own comic, but I’m a little nervous. You’re definitely a huge inspiration to me and I was wondering if you have any tips or things you wish you would have known before starting your comic

1. Finished better than perfect. Especially if it’s your first comic and you expect it to get a big long. Sooooo many people get caught up in drawing their first pages perfectly, they take so much time making them, their style evolves and the pages don’t look that good to them anymore, so they remake them; finally they have a few pages done, a few remade and give up because they’ve spent so much time and effort just on the start. How much effort you should put depends on you really but I’ve seen way too many comics that started out too ambitious and then discontinued soon. So pick a level that you think you will be able to keep up with in the long run and maybe later on you can raise it if you want: for example Abomination’s first panels used to be so much messier and the shading was pretty simple, usually just one shade of grey - now I try to make panels more clean and the shading is more complex

It obviously has a lot to do with my skills improving but before I didn’t even try to bother attempting trying to make the lines cleaner or shading more complex, it just started appearing in the comic as I myself got better at both, so it’s not that big of a challenge for me to put better quality stuff in

For example, before I would draw like 20 lines in one place and not bother correcting them into one but as my lines got more confident, I try to drawing just 1, maybe 2 per whatever I’m trying to portray

2. Motivation and planning. This one is even more depending on a person because I know some people don’t like to plan - and honestly I’m one of the people who doesn’t like to plan - however with a comic as long as Abomination it seemed necessary and turned out helpful later. I wasn’t doing it since the start but I wish I did because it helped me with keeping consistency, pulling foreshadowing and postshadowing better, just all the symbolism

And I plan in a way that keeps me motivated too so this is something you want: have a good well constructed plan

First of all: break the whole thing to smaller steps. I’ve broken Abomination into all these parts, each of them touches some topic, sometimes a topic needs two parts or more if it gets too long. At first for each part I wrote what I want to include in it, depending on my writing mood, it can look more like a fanfiction or more chaotic rambling. But after I have the plot of the part down, I plan out the panels: I make a numbered list and describe what each panel is going to show from the plot I wrote down. It makes me see how long this part is going to be and helps organise it (and helps not forget what I’ve wanted to include lol). This is extremely helpful as Abomination is long as hell and has recently went past 4000 panels, so it’s just good to have it written down somewhere.

How it motivates me: whenever I get a panel done, as in actually draw it and save in my files, I get to delete a part from my planning document that was about it. So, as I draw more panels, I see the list for the part I’m doing shrink - I see the number of the last panel become smaller, I have a good visual of how much work I have yet to do for the part.

It makes brain go brrrr because it sees you achieving goals

okay so I finished making a new streamlined outline for this fic project last night before bed and I’m feeling sooo much better about it oh my god. condensing the scene list (from 97 to 67 scenes) means I now have drafts of every scene, although some drafts are significantly messier/less complete than others. I leave town for this bachelorette party one week from today. my extremely ambitious goal is to have a complete draft—every scene has a messy beginning, middle, and end—to send back to my sister by the time I leave.

A/N: Part two! frankly, if you know my other writings you know that practically every each of them takes place in Japan. well, in Tokyo. Tokyo is just my home. And this is my backyard. Credit to Tokyo for being my everything and giving me so much inspiration for everything I do.

“You can’t just show up whenever you want.”

You and Sohlhee were just leaving after your lectures in the afternoon, when you saw Chanyeol casually leaning on the wall, waiting.

Waiting for you.

A whole week passed already since you learned that you were about to be wedded to the ridiculously tall, clumsy boy you’ve known way too long than you would like to.

Ever since that day, he’s been frequently coming to pick you up wherever you were, whether it was because of some family business or just to take you somewhere.

Not to mention, that this ‘taking you somewhere’ was obviously against your will.

His non stop presence was starting to seriously get on your last nerves.

Apparently, Mr. Ishikawa decided that the two of you should be spending more time together, since you were about to become wife and husband.

You really wanted to throw up whenever someone said those two words.

The whole thing was annoying you even more because it didn’t go unnoticed by your friends from Waseda, particularly Sohlhee.

“I would have texted or called you, but you never ever read my texts or answer my calls.” Chanyeol crossed his arms, looking at you with his big eyes.

“What?” Sohlhee sounded surprised. “Why do you ignore him like that, Y/N? That’s mean!”

You rolled your eyes. If only she knew.

“You know, what’s the freaking point of you showing up so often out of nowhere? Me and Sohlhee already have plans.” You said, quietly hoping that maybe, finally, you would get him to leave.

You could always dream, right?

Chanyeol lightly squinted his eyes at you. “Oh yeah? What do you actually usually do, if I may ask?”

Before you could tell him off again, Sohlhee was quicker to answer. “We usually hang out in Akihabara or Shibuya. Shinjuku is so boring. And to be honest, I don’t like it around here at night, in particular anywhere near to Kabukicho.” She told him.

You couldn’t fail to notice the weird sparkle in Chanyeol’s eye. And you already knew what he was about to say.

“Why, are you afraid of mafia or something?” He asked with a laugh.

You sent him a glare, but he ignored it. You could’ve imagined.

“I don’t feel comfortable at all around there. And actually everyone knows that everything happens there behind the closed door! Who knows what illegal stuff they might be doing.”

Chanyeol finally looked your way, but continued talking to Sohlhee. “You know, yakuza is actually an admitted organisation...”

Sohlhee looked at him with disbelief at his overly calm tone. “I don’t believe it that they’re clean. Look at all the crime happening in that district. I heard that lately someone was murdered somewhere around the Golden Gai. They’re monsters.” She concluded.

Your eyes immediately dropped to the ground.

Murder in the Golden Gai? Sounded way too familiar, and unfortunately you knew exactly who was the murderer.

God, it already sounded horrible enough in your thoughts alone.

“Well, you wouldn’t want to run into any of them, right.” You said slowly, blankly looking at the ground in front of you.

“No, I wouldn’t.”

Funny that she was technically being around one every single day, because given your position, you could be counted as one of those shady mafia members, no matter how stupid it sounded to you.

“So” Chanyeol’s deep voice vibrated through the air between you once again. “You coming?”

“I already told you.” You answered him through your gritted teeth.

To your utter surprise, you felt Chanyeol’s arm falling on your both shoulders, pulling you closer to him.

You looked at him with complete disbelief.

“Come on Y/N, you know this is super important. We have to be there.” He said ‘be’ as if signaling that it must be some family business where the two of you were immediately needed without any discussion.

Nothing out of the ordinary.

“What a life” You mumbled to yourself, mad that again you couldn’t do anything about it, you just had to be obedient to family’s orders.

You angrily pushed Chanyeol’s arm away, turning to Sohlhee with an apologetic expression already plastered to your face. Lately you had to use that expression way too often for everyone’s liking.

“Forgive me, Sohlhee” You started. “It looks like I really have to go. But I promise you the whole day on Sunday, okay? I won’t go anywhere.”

You pretended that you didn’t hear Chanyeol mumbling a very quiet ‘we’ll see about that’, looking at your friend.

You were more than sure that there will come one day when she would frankly have enough of you always cancelling your plans.

“Well, okay. What a waste.” She was clearly sad, and that made you feel sad as well, just as much as suddenly super disappointed in yourself.

If there was one thing which you absolutely, wholly hated, it would be cancelling on your friends.

But then again, in moments like this one you remembered when Mr. Ishikawa told you at the very beginning that real friends are a luxury that you can’t allow yourself to have in your world. That sooner or later those relationships were bound to fail, to simply end. People from your world were staying in their circle, as simple as that. But clearly, none could prevent you from making some friends whilst you were studying always surrounded by many people everyday.

You started to lose yourself in your thoughts again, not even noticing when Chanyeol already pulled you away by your wrist, straight to the big black car which was waiting for you a couple of meters away.

You were sitting on a chair inside a big, luminous Starbucks in Ginza with a venti size peach tea with extra ice cubes standing on the table in front of you. Chanyeol was lying about some important family business where you two were urgently needed, instead lurking you on some stupid ‘date’, how he liked to call it, again.

“I hate you.” You said, your voice filled with venom.

“Come on Y/N, I even got you the biggest peach tea. You love peaches.” He continued to sip on his own cold matcha, looking at you from the other side of the table.

“I also love the sound you make when you shut the freak up.”

Chanyeol leaned a little forward, holding the cup with both hands and still sipping on the tea. “Don’t be so cold.” He frowned a little. “Don’t you think we should actually try to make this work and get along? Remember, you are my fiancée.” He pronounced the last word making the ‘e’ in it way too long, adding a puppy look sent your way.

Lord help, that you just ended up dealing with something like that.

You knew that it would eventually lead to that.

Some super unnecessary and annoying ‘dates’ and actual family affairs later, you finally lost it.

You never considered yourself an actual violent person, but you knew yourself well enough to know that if someone pushed your limits, you would be able to literally throw tables.

Or different things that were near you in that moment.

You didn’t even know anymore what he did or said that made you literally explode.

It started building up little by little, only to finally explode like a volcano.

“Chanyeol, don’t talk to me, just leave finally. Yeah, leave, this is my freaking room.” You said, leaning on a dark wooden desk with beautiful porcelain cups and matching plates behind you.

“You are probably the most difficult person to talk to, you know?” He replied, completely ignoring your already flamed up cheeks, a sign that you were about to explode any moment.

He continued talking, but you already weren’t listening. You just wanted to be left alone, but visibly it was too much to ask.

Your hand made its way behind your back, taking one of the porcelain cups and holding it very tightly.

“...and more than that... Wait.” Chanyeol stopped, looking at you and your arm. Then he rolled his eyes. “Y/N. Show me what’s behind your back.”

You didn’t even give him an answer. With your free hand you took another cup and using your full strength that you could find in that moment, you smashed them both right on him, not caring too much where the blow landed, you were too mad to care.

It was a long way to actually bring you to a complete furious state like that, so without really thinking you just continued throwing all the expensive cups at him, obviously breaking all of them.

“Holy-” You finally heard Chanyeol’s voice in your ears. “You’re impossible! Quit beating me up! Oh my god, my nose...”

You finally properly looked at him, starting to calm down a little.

Your blow must have been really strong, because next to the red scratch on Chanyeol’s otherwise flawless cheek, his nose was completely red, carmin blood dripping down covering his lips and finally dripping from his chin everywhere.

Before the guilt could take over you, you simply fired: “Well, look. Will you finally leave now? You’re bleeding all over my carpet.” And with that, with his nose all in blood, you just threw him out, making sure to shut your door behind him extra loudly.

Right after you shut the door, you slowly leaned your forehead on the cold wood. Your life was already so difficult before, now you didn’t even know if there was a word to describe its present state.

18. Does your character believe the ends justify the means? No matter who they have to step on to reach their goals? ecstasy says: yes! I am Thinkaing about that little drabble of ecstasy on the ship as the abeast closes in. she’s very pragmatic, morals or not, and sometimes you have to do shitty and fucked up things for the greater good or the good of yourself and/or select others. it’s great if there’s other options! but sometimes, well, you have to crack eggs to make an omelette. that said, I think she does have a point where she’d at least hesitate to do something fucked up, especially now that she’s grown Morals in exchange for Pussy. I think she would have always hesitated giving up any of her crew or harming her parents. I think now she’d hesitate giving up the motherfuckers, and one motherfucker in particular. but I genuinely don’t think ecstasy would like. sacrifice herself for anything. not someone else, not the greater good. she’s just not That good, you know?

35. Speaking of items, what is their most prized possession? If they have one that is. when not considering her gun.............. hm. i’m assuming you’re excluding BOTH sexy guns because she has two actually. but barring those: she has a collection of shitty touristy tschotskes from new places she visits on the ship. I think if she really had to choose, she’d want to keep her first one, from when she wasn’t doing much more than ropework and deck swabbing and she wanted to see the whole entire world. she loves the stupid thing more than she’ll admit to.

67. What was the most acidic remark your character’s ever given to someone? And their reaction? ecstasy’s a bitch so this one is harder than glade. I think she’s said plenty of mean things, of course! but I’ll only consider bad things she said and later like. maybe-regretted. and like.... idk exactly what it might’ve been? ecstasy isn’t really a creature of regret but I am imagining like. something happened to raini, scaring the Shit out of ecstasy, and revivify wasn’t an option so they had to go for a rez ritual, and ecstasy was shaken up and bitchy and raini was bitchy right back because she’s raini and she has a -4 to everything and feels like shit, and ecstasy said something she regretted Immensely about like. I think it was an implication that basically if raini was gonna continue being stupid and dying or whatever, then ecstasy wouldn’t care the next time she did, and certainly wouldn’t go out of her way to be there like she did this time. and I think like. probably raini got mad about being called stupid but I also imagine hearing “next time I’m not going to be there if you die because you’re a bitch” maybe Hurt some. @bekahdoesnerdshit feel free to give Thots on this one.

45) How would I describe my own appearance Well, to be honest.... I’m not sure. In terms of character design I feel like I’m pretty plain. Everything “unique” about me takes place on a very small level. My eyes, my missing finger, a single tuft of hair that sticks out of a silhouette  I’d say I’m just average, to be honest. No shame in it, I don’t think
