So I learnt about Asbestos today at Tafe because I was doing a trade tester sort of thing and in the studying we were doing, we talked about asbestos.
I just remembered that Cave said something about the testing spheres in old Aperture being made of asbestos, or something like that.
A funny thing about asbestos is that it can cause all kinda of diseases, cancers and illnesses when the fibres are inhaled into the lungs.
If the Asbestos is seal with something like paint, it’s perfectly safe unless disturbed by drilling, piecing the seal, etc. Basically, if you damage it, it can release fibres that can be inhaled.
Now in portal 2, that whole place is falling apart, dilapidated, breaking apart, etc.
If the spheres, assuming that they’re made of asbestos, are falling apart, that means the asbestos has been disturbed.
If the asbestos has been disturbed, that means the asbestos fibres are been released.
That means that Chell has been breathing in asbestos fibres, which means there’s a pretty high chance that Chell could have some kind of Asbestos related disease or cancer.
The average survival time for Mesothelioma (a disease caused by asbestos) is less than a year.
Chell probably has a high chance of developing Mesothelioma which means she’s only going to live a couple months after she gets free.
Maybe GLaDOD only let Chell go because she knew about the asbestos and didn’t want Chell’s last few months to be miserable in the facility.
