@lovelikeyoursfest Day 8 - Freestyle (Merfolk AU x Tiniest Pirate Crew AU)
“You don’t seem, ah, terribly surprised.”
“We’ve seen weirder things, Juli.”
What’s weirder than the recently-annexed human doctor sprouting gills and a tail?  We don’t know but they’ll still smooch him.

Of shipwrecks and seafoam
Summary: Let me tell you a story about a pirate and a merman, finding a love that goes beyond insecurities and death. Let yourself be taken away onto a journey about doubt and secrets, understanding and a bond that even goes beyond the deep blue of the ocean.
Pairing: Merman!Julian Devorak x Pirate!Reader (Nonbinary) Rating: Mature because of swearing and suggestive content Warning: Blood, Death, Killing Genre: Romance, Drama, Alternate Universe
a/n: I originally wanted to post it tomorrow, but since I finished so many requests, I didn’t want to take up a request post with my own writing. So today was just as good as any and I am STOKED. I’ve been planning this story carefully and I was so looking forward to writing it and here it is!! I hope I don’t disappoint myself halfway in and I hope you guys enjoy it too! Leave me a comment on what you think about it if you got the time, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! MerMay woop!
Prologue
You gasped for air, holding on to the mast as tightly as you could as the enemy ship rammed into yours. With a loud creak, as loud as the growling thunder from above, the floor under you split, marking the end of the wooden transport device you had called your home for so long now. You could hear your comrades shrieking, the captain urging everyone to continue and to fight, but you had long lost your bite in this war. For you, it was over.
Panicked, you looked around, trying to make out the dinghy. Even if all your supplies were going to sink with the enormous boat, the smaller one would secure your survival at least for a while. But your hopes were cruelly shattered as you heard a splash that did not fit the usual ones around you. You couldn’t even see the dinghy anymore, hidden somewhere below your vision, as some of your - still alive - comrades had already begun sinking it and rowing off. There were many, many more people on the ship, but that lifeline had been torn.
There was another loud, terrible crash as the enemies struck again. With the rain pouring down mercilessly, you felt your grip slip away in the rumble all around you. The sounds of cannons being fired rang through your brain like nothing had ever before, even after all the countless sea battles you had participated in before. And there was the thunder, always the thunder that seemed to reprimand everyone for their actions in this war.
You were no coward, but in the very moment that you felt your grip on the mast loosened, you felt an unspeakable fear falling over you. This was the end. That was the moment you’d die. Your fingers let go of the wooden pillar, helplessly trying to reach for a stray rope that was close by. But you missed and instead, fell backwards. Suddenly, the noises were blocked out by the fear in you, your own screams echoing through the night, as your body tumbled to the floor.
Like so many of the other people you had lived with, your body spun over, your shoulders crashed into the ground, your head hit it only seconds later. There was no way you could say which direction you were going anymore, as you rolled into the one of the open water, unable to stop yourself from tumbling overboard.
However, before you fell to your sure death, you once more got to feel the indescribable pain of having your body pierced. For a second, your tumble got held back by the broken railing, split wood piercing into the side of your torso, making you shriek in pain. But your body reacted, gripping onto what was left of the railing, your hands bleeding as the clawed into the last hold you had.
Never before had you felt as seasick as now that you could see the raging, black waters below you. The movement in you had been strong enough to have you involuntarily sway from side to side. You readjusted your grip multiple times, whimpering every time you could feel the sting in your body from all your wounds. You wished this was all a bad dream, that none of this really happened and you’d wake up in your hammock soon, ready to sweep the deck for the day. But the reality was harsh, cold and dark. If not for the blood on your hands, you might have been able to hang on long enough for someone to pull you up, but the more you readjusted, the slippery it got.
Soon enough you were hanging by your last two fingers only, frantically looking back and forth between water and boat until suddenly - another crash. Another hit from your enemies, another death sentence for so many of you. Without warning you got tossed off the boat, hearing only the thunder above you and feeling the hard clash as you hit the water and then…
Silence.
Nothing anymore, just irregular splashes which you could faintly make out. If not for the creeping feeling in your lungs, you would have thought that this was it, the end of the long dream. But the longer you stayed underwater, the more your lungs screamed in pain, your body convulsing and trying to get back to the surface. You felt like you were on fire, the wounds burning because of the sea salt, your lungs giving out on their function without air to supply them, and your eyes burning as you tried to see anything. There was so much panic in every cell of your body, the adrenaline kicking in to help you survive an almost impossible situation.
You knew you had breached the surface when you heard the screams and the cracks again. More and more people splashed into the waters, mostly dead than alive. Right in front of your eyes - from the little bit you could see through your blurry vision - you saw the boat dividing itself into two pieces, barrels falling overboard as well as people jumping to what they thought was better than staying on the ship. You knew, or at least, your body knew it had to get away from the sinking piece of wood that would tear everyone down with it, but you could only watch in pure disbelieve, mixed with sadness, mixed with the inevitable knowledge that you’d die when it sank.
You almost saw the mast you had previously held on before too late as it came into your direction. It was almost too hypnotic to take your eyes off of it, as it slowly fell over you and your mouth let out another scream while your mind recited a silent prayer. And with the last bit of consciousness you had, you sank back into the water as deep as you could, hoping that whatever being had heard your pleads, would rescue you.
A loud groan escaped your body and you instinctively gripped your side, feeling the pain of it erupting through your nerves. Under your dirty, bloody fingers you felt a slimy consistency and your eyes shot open in a moment of realization.
You were not dead.
Sure, everything hurt. From your hands that stung like a million bees, to your head which had gotten hit pretty hard after all. The place you were laying was uncomfortable, crunching every time you moved around, though when you gripped into it, you felt all too familiar sand running through your fingers.
More groans escaped you as you tried to piece together the happenings of the night. It must have been hours since then, the sun blinding you so much, your eyes began to produce tears to water them. Your ship had been wrecked by another crew of pirates, you had lost your grip on the mast, plummeted against the railings and fell into the water where the mast almost battered you to death. So far, it was clear to you what happened. But where were you now?
Hissing and whining from the pain you turned your body onto your healthy right side, hearing the sound of water softly splashing near you. Taking a moment to breathe deeply you squinnied your eyes tightly together, trying to get rid of the burning in them.
When you opened them again, you were met with another pair of eyes looking at you as if they were staring directly into your soul. Dark grey jewels that blinked shyly back at you, their color indescribable with the words you knew. They were surrounded by red strings, that looked like velvet hair, flowing in the water and they blinded you as they reflected the sun. If you had learned anything in all the years a pirate behind you, those features were not from an animal.
And they were not human either.

Oh my gosh I would read either way, Fisherman Mc and siren JULIAN or Siren Mc and Pirate Julian!! Either way im excited and hyping you whenever you want to write it ♡♡
🏹
Ahh ty!! I don’t know when I’ll start writing it since I have other projects in mind currently, but I do still have the draft from when I started writing the old one! Beware it’s a bit older so the writing style might be a little different- but it’s down below!
Salty air whips past your face and the lapping of water fills your ears like a smooth melody. Your ship is small but sturdy, withstanding wild waters as good as the higher-end boats. You're a fisher, but your friend calls you a pirate, despite how many times you correct him. The summer heat flushes your skin and darkens your complexion as you work, sweaty and heaving.
You cast out your net with a grunt, weights on the corners adding to the weight you sling around on a daily basis. You’ve gotten stronger since you inherited the business, you had to be if you wanted to make a living. You salt cure a lot of the fish you catch to preserve it—coolers are too expensive and you're picking up the art of pickling, so you don’t need it. You keep raw fish for bait, though you prefer clams, they don’t stink as much.
A tug on the strings of the net catches your attention. Lucky day! You pull the strings over a suspended beam for leverage and start to lift the net from the water. It’s heavier than you expected and it takes more effort than the average catch. What did you catch? A loud flapping of fins catches against the water and you brace your feet, pulling with all your might. Finally, the net rises and thumps on the floor of your ship.
Inside lays a squirming siren, eel-like and red hair. “Captain!” He cheers, cheeks flushed and scales shining. “Ilya.” You sigh, staring down at the merman with light frustration. “Why didn’t you tell me it was you? You made me pull you in a net!”
Julian flashes a toothy smirk, squinting his eyes as the sun shines over his face. “Then I wouldn't see those muscles in action!” He’s a shameless flirt, you suppose it’s in his nature. “You are aware you don’t see me when you’re being pulled out of the water, correct? All you get is an eyeful of boat.”
He rolls his eyes, chuckling as he squirms in the net. “It was worth a shot. Now you’ve got me captured, whatever shall you do with me?” Julian feigns disparity, closing his eyes as he turns his head and bares his neck. “Throw you back, that’s what I do.” You snort, grinning at how Julian scoffs and glares at you, though holding no malice.
“I’m a fine catch if I do say so myself!”
“Sure you are. Now, what brings you to my boat?” You muse, kneeling down where he lays restricted and drawing your knife from its holster. Julian always has a weird look in his eyes when you draw your blade. “Tired of me already, Captain?” He arches a brow and watches as you cut him free from the net.
“Well, you’ve ruined another net. How do you get so tangled?” Once he’s freed, he leans on his side, resting his elbows against the ship floor. “The question is not how but why?” Julian picks at the fabric of your trousers with webbed fingers. “Ok then, why are you tangling yourself in the nets?”
Julian’s face blooms a bright red but he still answers suavely. “I’ve gotta make an entrance somehow, don’t I?” He watches you roll your eyes and grab a bucket of raw fish. You caught it earlier in the day and they’re still fresh. He licks his lips at the smell. “You’re lucky I caught something smaller before you.”
You grab a mackerel from the tale and dangle it above his head. “Want it?” He nods quickly, making a grab for it before you raise it higher. Julian frowns, giving you his best attempt at puppy eyes. He fails miserably. You lower the fish to his lips anyways and he bites into it with sharp teeth. “Only teasing.” You pat his head as Julian swallows the half-chewed fish. “I wouldn’t mind another.”
The bucket is slid to him and Julian wishes you hand fed him for just a little longer. “Help yourself.” You watch as he slurps down a few more before pulling his hands from the bucket. “Gotta save some for you, captain.” He slides it back to you. “I’ve told you before, Ilya, I’m just a fisher.”
You place the bucket back in a shaded corner of the boat and Julian gasps like he’s been offended by your words. “You can be both! Besides, what’s a siren without a pirate?” He pushes his wet hair back with webbed fingers, out of his face. It displays a sense of trust, considering he’s exposing the red sclera of his eye to you. “I’m pretty sure you’d still be a siren.” You chuckle and Julian huffs. “Y’know, from the tales I’ve heard, sirens are much meaner to pirates—you should feel lucky!”
You can’t help but roll your eyes. “Says the man who ties himself up in my nets.” You settle down next to him as the boat bobs in the water, your anchor long cast. The pool of saltwater that lays under his slick body slides to you with the movement of the boat and wets your clothes but you can’t bring yourself to mind.

For the MAB: Mermaid and/or Pirate!AU? Love your work 💖
HECK YES LET’S DO A MERMAID/PIRATE AU BECAUSE WHO DOESN’T LOVE A MIX OF BOTH?  KNOW THAT I DO.
~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~
Magnus stared out across the rolling waves, at the storm that they were slowly approaching as they made for port.  His eyes drifted down to the water, but there was no silvery flash that he'd gotten used to over the years.
"Captain!"
Magnus looked over his shoulder and raised an eyebrow, turning away from the water, even though he never wanted to look away.  Not anymore.
"We're still twenty minutes out, but the storm is going to be upon us before we can get properly docked."
Magnus focused on Ilyas and offered him a small smile.  "It's fine.  We'll anchor off-shore and ride out the storm here.  At the very least, the island will take the brunt of it."
Ilyas gave a firm nod.  "I'll have them drop the anchor as soon as we're further towards land."
"Good," Magnus praised, giving him a nod before turning back out to the water.  He narrowed his eyes, wondering if he'd imagined the silver flash he'd seen under the crest of one wave.  But there was no head bobbing above the waves, no flash of pale skin and shining scales.
Magnus turned away from the water and went to go help the crew get the ship prepared to weather the storm.
~!~
They beat the storm to the island by the matter of an hour.  Long enough that a group of them were able to go ashore who wanted to ride it out there.  Magnus went with them, because he always did, and left Ilyas in charge.  Nothing would happen to the ship while he was gone, and he'd be able to sit on the beach for the storm.
"You going out Stormwatcher?" A low, croaking voice asked.
Magnus smiled faintly and turned his attention to Rita, her eyes cloudy with age and nodded as he offered her the bag off his shoulder, and a heavy bag of coin.  "As I usually do."
She shook her head.  "None of us understand why you can't watch the storms safely from here."
Magnus winked at her.  "It's not about watching the storms.  It's about living them," he repeated, grabbing a mug of ale, downing it for courage before he headed for the door, watching as the sky grew darker and darker.
"Be safe, Magnus Stormwatcher!" Rita called.  "For I sense danger in your future!"
"I'm always safe," Magnus promised, heading into the jungle.  It started to rain not long after and he sucked in a slow breath, the air heavy with humidity and water.  His steps were sure, and he made his way to the cove that only he knew of, and where he watched every storm roll in.
Stopping under his usual outcropping, Magnus settled down on the wet stone and kicked off his shoes, putting them to the side with the blankets, pillows, and other odds and ends he had stashed into a small crate over the years.
"I was worried you wouldn't make it, you know."
Magnus' breath caught and he turned, taking in the sight of pale skin riddled with black tattoos, messy black hair, and gleaming hazel eyes.  He froze and swallowed, walking closer, before kneeling at the edge of the cave.  "I was worried you wouldn't want to watch with me any longer."
A scoff and a flick of a large tail, showcasing shining silver and black scales.  "Of course I want to watch."
Magnus smiled and settled down onto the edge of the outcropping, next to the merman who had pulled himself out of the water enough to sit on rocks that were still shallowly in the water.  "We didn't part on the greatest of terms, Alexander.  I wasn't sure you'd ever want to see me again."
Alec turned his attention to the sky, watching lightning streak across it.  "Of course I wanted to see you again."
Magnus swallowed.  He said it so certainly, so easily, like they hadn't... like there hadn't been an open question the last time that had been left, like a stone between them that they could never move.  "I'm glad," Magnus managed, turning his chin to the sky.  The hard, stinging rain hid the evidence of tears on his cheeks and he breathed through the wetness clinging to every part of him.
It was hard, but there was a question he had to ask.  That Alexander deserved him to ask.  "How is your mate, Lydia?  She is well, I hope?"
Alec was silent, his face tilted towards the black sky.  "You ask a question that pains you to know the answer to."
"I do," Magnus agreed, looking down from the sky to the waters below.  He blew out a hard breath before he glanced over to Alec and found the merman staring at him.  He turned his head away and looked back at the storm again.  "It doesn't mean I don't want to know the answer."
Alec hummed and closed his eyes, savoring the feel of rain on his skin and scales.  "You are still angry about that?"
Magnus shook his head.  "No.  I'm not angry any longer.  I'm..." he searched for a word that wouldn't be too telling, but he supposed it was easy for Alec to know.  He'd never made a secret of his own feelings.  "I'm sad, I suppose.  Resigned."
"Why?" Alec asked, tilting his head, opening his eyes to look at the human again.  "You will surely find someone in your world.  There are many who would have you, many you have had, you have said as much to me, many times."
Magnus wanted to laugh, and shook his head again.  "It's not that simple, Alexander.  The heart rarely is.  It's all right.  I'm glad you haven't disappeared.  I'd worry about you too much if you did."
Alec frowned and narrowed his eyes at Magnus.  "Why?"
This time a laugh did escape, but it was hoarse and dry and Magnus was doubly glad for the rain that hid the tears leaking from his eyes.  "You already know the answer so that question.  It's what we fought over the last time I was here."
Alec went quiet and he kicked his tail in the water, staring down at it.  "I'm not mated to Lydia."  He felt Magnus go still beside him before he continued.  "Isabelle and Lydia were mated under the last full moon ceremony.  I remain...unattached."
Magnus' breath caught and he couldn't help turning to look at Alexander again.  "Why?  You'd told me you needed to marry her for political and-"
"Because," Alexander said, impatient and irritated.  "The human I care for decided to get reckless and I had to ensure that he was taken care of."
Magnus stared before his eyes fell shut, and he remembered, over and over again, every ship they'd boarded, that they'd captured, how it had seemed an invisible force was protecting him the last few months.  Whether it was knives appearing in the backs of those about to hurt him, or boats capsizing much more quickly than they should, he'd hoped, even though he'd never seen...
"You care for me?" he asked, focusing on the part that he cared too much about.
"I've never been in love before," Alexander admitted.  "When Isabelle and Lydia came to me to announce they were in love, it was easy to remove myself from the mating, and offer it to her in her stead."  He stared out at the thrashing waters and reached out to rest his hand over Magnus', squeezing it slowly.  "I felt relief.  More relief than I have ever felt in my life.  Because I would not need to give up this - keeping you safe and watching storms with you."
Magnus swallowed hard and dropped his head to stare at his lap, tears coming in earnest now.  Alec's skin was cool against his palm and he wanted it pressed against his heart, his neck, pulling him in for a kiss, everything.  "Alexander, that doesn't mean that some of the things you said to me aren't correct.  They are, and you..." he trailed off and sighed.  "You were right about a merman and a human being in love.  It's impossible, no matter how much we might wish otherwise."
"Impossible," Alec said simply.  "Just means that you need to try again."
Magnus laughed and couldn't help grinning at the merman and the smile that he could see lingering on those lips, and he wanted nothing more to taste them again.  Not just the brief, fleeting kiss of before, but what Alexander's passion tasted like, and how he would lose himself in desperate kisses.
Alec shifted himself on the rock and pulled his tail the rest of the way out of the water, glad for the rain that was making this so easy to be able to do.  "Magnus.  You were very brave and I hurt you.  For that, I am more sorry than I can begin to express."
“It’s all right,” Magnus said quietly, looking down at Alec’s tail, at the bright silver shine in the raindrops.  He reached out and trailed his fingers along the designs there, his scales smooth to the touch.  “You are forgiven.  I can understand why, even if I don’t agree.”
“Good,” Alec said, nodding his head.  He frowned and bit down on his lip.  “I confess I am not certain of how this next part is supposed to go.”
Magnus lifted his eyes and met Alec’s again.  “What do you mean?  How what is supposed to go?”
Alec reached into the satchel by his side and pulled out a necklace.  “If you were my intended, Magnus, you would wear this, and everyone would know who your future mate would be.”
Magnus gasped and stared at the necklace made of rubies and sapphires set in silver.  He’d never seen anything so beautiful, and the craftsmanship was exquisite.  He reached out to trail his fingers along the gems, and swallowed hard, even as he dropped his hand between them again.  “Why are you showing me that?”
Alec frowned.  “Isabelle said you’d understand?  She mentioned that humans do something similar?  Often with rings?”  He held out his slightly webbed hands and then looked up to Magnus.  “But we don’t wear rings, we have these necklaces.”
Magnus’ breath caught and he lifted his eyes to Alec.  “You...why... are you giving this to me?”
“I wish for you to be my mate, if you are willing,” Alec said, his voice formal as he held the necklace out to Magnus.  “I wish to be by your side to watch every storm, to protect you on the sea, and to visit you when I can when you are on the land.”
Magnus stared at Alec, his eyes wide as he touched the necklace again, tears gathering in his eyes.  “You, you want me to be your mate?”
Alec nodded firmly.  “I do.”
Magnus’ took a second, several long seconds, to breathe before he wrapped his fingers around the necklace and lifted his eyes to meet Alec’s eyes, smiling at him.  “I accept,” he whispered, lifting his fingers away.  He reached around his neck and carefully pulled off his favorite leather cord and removed two of his own rings, each with one large letter that stood for his initials.
Alec tilted his head, watching as Magnus undid the ties on the necklace and put the rings on them.  “What are you doing?”
“Until I can find a necklace with jewels worthy of you,” Magnus breathed, offering the necklace to Alec with shaky fingers.  “I offer you this, Alexander Lightwood, Prince of the Eastern Seas, in return.  A cord that I braided myself, and rings bearing my initials to signify to all that I have accepted you.”
Alec’s eyes widened and he reached out to touch the necklace, placing the one he had offered Magnus on the human’s leg.  “I would be honored to wear such a gift.”  He dipped his head and let Magnus settle the necklace on him before he looked down at the rings, carefully toying with them before he looked up.  “May I put yours on you?”
Magnus nodded and swallowed, grinning at Alec.  “Of course, of course!” he leaned in and shivered as Alec’s fingers trailed down his neck as they settled the necklace on him.  It was heavy, but it reminded him that he’d been claimed by the merman in front of him.
“It’s almost as beautiful as you are,” Alec said, patting the gems against Magnus’ chest.  The rain was coming down harder now, silencing the world around them.  He leaned in and pressed his face to Magnus’ neck, nuzzling into the warmth of his skin.  “May I ask you for something?”
Magnus combed his fingers through the messy hair pressed against him and smiled.  “You may ask me for anything in my power to give, Alexander, and it is yours.”
Alec pulled back and stared at Magnus, his eyes intent.  “Your lips.  I had the chance to taste them once and squandered it, but I dreamed of having another chance.  Please, may I?”
“Yes,” Magnus managed, the word catching in his throat.  “I’ve dreamed of kissing you again too, Alexander, please-” the rest of his plea was cut off when he abruptly had a lap full of a merman, kissing him, hard and passionate.  It was nothing like their first kiss, it was all-consuming, and Magnus melted into it, allowing Alexander to press him back against the wet stone.
When they broke apart, panting softly against each other’s lips, Alec reached out and combed his fingers through Magnus’ hair.  “My mate,” he whispered, his tone quiet and reverent.  “How perfect you are.”
“I think you are the perfect one,” Magnus whispered.  He pulled Alec in and kissed him again, melting into the gentle nips of his teeth and his eager hands tugging him insistently closer.  By the time they broke apart, both of them needing air, Magnus remembered the surprise he had for Alec.  “I have something else for you too.”
Alec raised an eyebrow and hummed, leaning down to kiss the necklace and the bronze skin beneath it, waving a hand to show he was listening.
Magnus gasped under the scrape of Alec’s teeth, unable to stop the roll of his hips that had him grinding against the firm pressure of Alec’s tail.  “I won a bet with a sea witch,” he whispered.  “She created a piece of jewelry that would allow me to become a merman, like you.”
Alec yanked himself back from Magnus and stared at him with wide eyes.  “Have you tested it?”
“I have,” Magnus whispered.  “My coloring is definitely, uh, bright, but I think you’ll like it?”
“Show me!” Alec demanded, staring at Magnus, his eyes still wide.  “Can you breathe underwater?”
“Yes, just like you,” Magnus answered as he fumbled with the bag by his side before he pulled out the bracelet and showed it to Alec.  He shifted so he could put his feet into the water and winked at Alexander before slipping it onto his wrist, latching it into place.
Alec watched as Magnus’ skin rippled and his legs began to shift and meld together.  The bronze shade of his skin made way for resplendent golden scales and fins and spines tipped in jeweled colors of every possible shade.  He reached out and gently traced the scales with his fingertips, only to find Magnus looking at him with eyes the same shade as the gold of his scales.  “So beautiful,” he whispered.
Magnus held his hand out to Alec and kicked his tail into the water.  “Swim with me?  I’ve always wanted to watch the storm from beneath the water.”
Alec grabbed Magnus’ hand and slid into the water, kicking himself away from the wall and deep enough to escape the tide, tugging Magnus after him, to the base of the cove.  He reached out and touched the necklace around Magnus’ neck before meeting the golden eyes of the merman across from him.  “You’re incredible,” he whispered, stroking Magnus’ cheek.  “My beautiful mate.”
Magnus pulled Alec in for another kiss, his gills working easily under the water as they kissed, their tails tangling together, sending that same roiling, gritty friction up his spine.  It was so good his body quaked with it.  Another crack of thunder split the sky and shook the sea, but Magnus was happily lost to the warm embrace of his mate.  The skies could rage all they wanted, he would stay safe here, wrapped in Alec’s arms and tail.
“Mine,” Alec whispered, pulling back from the kiss for the briefest of seconds to press their foreheads together.  “Magnus.  You’re mine.”
“I am, darling,” Magnus agreed, “For as long as you will have me.”
Alec smiled and cupped his face.  “Until the oceans and seas run dry, my mate.”
Magnus’ heart skipped a beat as he was pulled into another kiss and pressed back against a soft bed of seaweed, all of Alec’s body pressed against him.  The storm that raged above them was nothing compared to their passion as they lost themselves in each other.

(sorry i'm late) BRUH YOU'RE WRITING A BOOK? THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL TELL ME ***EVERYTHING***??? oetrugnaf Like. Seriously. Everything. What's the environment, plot, characters, time period, mood, everythiiiiiiinnnng. Please, gush away!!!
hfjkasdhfsjkfh let’s see how coherent i can be without giving away spoilers
UNDER THE CUT FOR LENGTH LOL
Setting
pretty much ur typical fantasy environment, except maybe a little more ~steampunk~ than usual. i like the idea of having trains and stuff further inland, even if most of the book takes place on the coast or the sea
MAGIC!! yes we have magic of course we have magic. still working out the kinks of that and how it works, but the gist of it is that most people who do magic use runes because the innate magic that u could theoretically just do–that magic disappeared from the world at the end of the last Great War.
Supposedly, anyway. Most people think this is a myth, that the sea witches and their lost city are nothing but a fun legend
most runecasters (still working on what we’re gonna call ppl who do magic orz) get tattoos! good magical tattoo artists are few and far between, but if you’ve got the money to have a good one on call, you will probably be nearly unstoppable
Nox’s friend Cade is a very talented tattoo artist, and did a lot of her more intricate runes (like the one on her throat that lets her breathe fire)
Cade belongs to @jackalopse who is also helping me hammer out magic details bless them
Mermaids!!!! we got mermaids!!! though i’m gonna be calling them sirens bc i hate the word merman more than i can say jfkdsl our love interest and resident best boy Ilya is a siren
sirens have sharp teeth and pointy ears and a whole ass society beneath the waves
they can mimic voices and some sounds to lure in their prey
they have their own magic (though Ilya doesn’t know any) and there are legends of sirens protecting the location of the mysterious Lost City i mentioned before :3c
sirens are also hunted for their body parts :)) there’s a whole… not illegal but frowned upon trade for siren parts. rich assholes have started a superstition somewhere along the way that having a siren head hung on your ship will grant you safe travels and calm seas
this is a lie but that don’t stop capitalism
then we have our main event, so to speak, which is basically a Fantasy Bermuda Triangle. there’s a section of the sea where supposedly the lost city disappeared into the depths that is completely covered in mists all the time. it’s a floating graveyard full of the corpses of ancient warships and the wreckage of any other ships over the years who dared to brave the fog looking for treasure and glory
this was the First bit of lore Nox threw at me when she gave me this idea–this area of the sea is known as The Graveyard of the Ancients, or just The Graves
as you can imagine there are about 5 billion ghost stories about this place, just like the real bermuda triangle jfklds
Characters
Nox Pendragon
of course she is the main character did you expect anything else
youngest daughter of a well known cursebreaker and magic shop owner Ravan Pendragon, she’s a fresh-faced young adult who spends most of her free time flirting with ladies down by the docks and studying magic
of Ravan’s two girls, she’s the more rambunctious of the two, who tends to get into more trouble on any given day
Nox kicks off the book by getting kidnapped! by pirates! how exciting!
her solution to this is to accidentally capsize the entire ship
:D
Ilya Fisher
as mentioned before, Ilya’s a siren
Fisher is not this poor boy’s real last name, but Nox is bad at improvising, so that’s what it’s gonna be
Ilya’s had some interaction with humans before, and though they didn’t end well per se, he’s still interested in walking on land someday
he saves Nox from drowning once she capsizes the pirate ship, and their friendship will be progressing from there ;w;
Fawkes
Fawkes is the world’s leading scholar on all things relating to the Graves and the sea witches
Nox and Ilya go looking for them specifically at some point, and they’ll end up being the 3rd main character eventually
Fawkes is a bit odd, and though they’re quite young compared to Nox and Ilya, they are incredibly smart and incredibly talented at… well, Nox isn’t really sure what kind of magic it is that they do, but they seem to know a lot more about things than they should
I love them and i think other people will also love them they are Fun
Minor characters that I don’t want to give too many details about right now include
Captain Hale, who kidnapped Nox
a man named Carter
Ravan Pendragon
Nox’s aunt who isn’t really related to her but that doesn’t matter, Sirena + her wife
Ilya’s mom, Rivkah, and his baby brother, Elliot
Nox’s friend, Cade
Plot
we out here looking for that lost city of sea witches babes bc something is fishy (haha) and Nox wonders what sort of truth there could be to Captain Hale’s insistence that she and her father had ‘the key’ to finding that city again
idk about mood but i hope it ends up being fun and enjoyable fklsdj

Can I please have a continuation of your mer!Julian story?
Heyo I do like me some mermaids!
this is a continuation from HERE
with a GENDERNEUTRAL!apprentice
Julian had been staying in their tub for the last week before anything really changed. He didn’t trust them, and that made sense. They didn’t expect him to trust them right away anyway. But a merman can’t stay in a tub forever- and why was it he needed to get inside?
“My sister’s in there-” he told them. “She’s been there for months- I think she’s being held captive.”
“In the city?”
His eyes narrow. “In the palace.”
They fold one leg over the other and sigh. “Okay so- let’s say there wasn’t that grate and you could get into the canals. How were you presuming you’d get into the palace?”
At their question, the fins beside his throat flutter and tuck in on themselves. Something akin to a blush coats his cheeks and he looks away with embarrassment. “Well- ah- you see… I’m good at thinking on my feet.”
“You don’t have feet…”
Julian frowns, his tail flicking in dismay. Realizing how he was caught, he remained silent after that. They thread their fingers together and try to think through what else to say. The palace was always heavily guarded, and while a few canals ran close and even one, they believe, ran into the palace through the western side- it would be difficult to get in. There was no way that Julian could make his way inside without being detected.
At least- he couldn’t do it alone.
They wouldn’t want to go in the details about it, and honestly, they’d hoped that no one would see them. Magic could only do so much, and that’s how they found themselves sneaking into the palace through a hatch by the forests all with Julian hung on their back. He was ungodly heavy thanks to his tail, long and still so stunningly beautiful with speckles of black, orange, and red. Julian’s arms were wound at their shoulders, as though they were giving him a piggy back ride.
It was difficult, in the twilight hours, to sneak in between the guards and maids milling about. There were less staff in the backyard regions at least, but the maids were a different story. Some were helping to set the table, others were prepping food or cleaning dishes. They overheard the chef yell a bit, complaining about the Countess’ being late to dinner for the fourth night in a row.
Thank god- at least she was busy.
So they continued onward. Out of all the places they could keep a mermaid, the mage wasn’t quite sure where they would do so. Well… they were keeping Julian in a bathtub.
The more they explored, poking their head into different rooms and finding them empty, the tighter Julian’s tail wound around their waist. “We’re getting closer,” he murmurs at one point. “I can feel it.”
And they nod, holding onto him tighter.
At one door, they hesitate at the sound of a laugh. Julian, from just behind them, sucks in a sharp breath. “Pasha- She- She’s in there!” He points feebly at the door and, without another moment to spare, they burst in. The sight they were met with was not what either of them expected.
It was a bathhouse, the windows were open and it looked rather romantic to say the least. In the bath that was gently rolling with steam and oils was not one but two beings. They had seen the Countess one time in person as she came from Prakra on her grand entry into Vesuvia- and this was their second time seeing her with a robe barely clung to her whilst she kissed at the throat of a red-haired woman.
Said red-haired woman looked shockingly familiar- or at least shockingly alike to Julian. They didn’t have to connect the dots too quickly though as Julian had immediately perked up and called, “Pasha!”
Pasha blinks a few times and leans away from the Countess to see her brother. Her eyes widen and she gasps, swimming to the edge of the bath as she echoed back, “Ilya! Oh my god how- you’re here!” Her excitement overwhelms her embarrassment for a moment before she dips back into the bath, adjusting a similar looking robe to what the Countess had on. From their position, the mage can see a glimmer of red in the water- her tail.
“I was so worried-” Ilya calls softly. The mage takes a few more steps in, making it easier for them to see one another. It’s only then that he seems to gauge how… awkward this was, as he glances between his sister and the almost naked woman she was… bathing with. “What are you- erm- doing here?” He probes, fins tucking back and, from what they can see, another blush coating his cheeks.
Pasha glances at the Countess and then gapes for a moment. “Ahm- well- I was just staying here for a time. Nadia was giving me work and teaching me more…” She swallows and shrugs. “So yeah, I’ve just been staying here.”
“Oh. I see.” Julian croaks back. Even the Countess seemed to choke on the awkwardness and was practically tucked at the end of the bath, hoping that neither of their new guests had seen to much of her indecency… “Well!” He suddenly spoke loudly, clapping their shoulder. “We should get going! I’m glad you’re well and– enjoy your bath!”
They stumbled out awkwardly, both of them coughing to clear the air of that very awkward encounter. They look back at Julian then, swallowing and soon asking, “So, where to now?”
Julian just blinks owlishly his fins eventually untucking and furling out. “Uhh- the bathtub?”
(Wanna see something else? Shoot me a message~)

Epilogue
Come in, have a seat! Let me tell you a story about a pirate and a merman, finding a love that goes beyond insecurities and death. Why don't you let yourself be taken away onto a journey about doubt and secrets, understanding, and a bond that even goes beyond the deep blue of the ocean?
There once was a merman so desperate to become human, with his charms and physical strength he collected every other mermaid and merman in the ocean to create the ultimate solution for his problem. There was no means to expensive for him to take it and who didn't give him the wished-for results was mercilessly disposed of by this leader. It was hard, they needed so many human lives that they almost fell victim to their own hunger for success, until finally, a young, knowledgeable merman succeeded in creating a potion. He was celebrated and praised for his effort, and the leader who wanted to be a human so bad did not even wait for another moon to pass before he swallowed it whole.
He was gifted with two legs, a gill-free body, and looks that made the gods green of envy. But what he could not receive through this potion was the ability to be a human, and he was soon to be exposed of as nothing but an imitator by a fearless boy and the softest kind of magic, water splashing the human mermaid. Neither the merman who crafted the potion, nor the leader could have known what it would do to him, to be wet once more, but in shock and horror the people had to watch him turn back into his fish-self, screaming and screeching for help, they thought it was better to kill him than see him suffer as much.
So they brushed him with a torch, hoping his soul would be able to rest. Burning and crying, the merman crawled back to the water he had come from, a mere piece of charred coal he was as he sunk into the arms of his flock. They mourned and blamed the merman who had created the potion, putting every accusation and every fault on him. Driven with fear and guilt, the merman had no other chance but to agree to care for the leader from that day onward, restoring what could be saved from it.
But not even a full phase of the moon passed, when the leader had a request for the merman. He wanted to be human once again. And in his greed, he made the merman swear to create the best serum he could, or he would lose what little the merman had left from his family with certainty. When the merman didn't tend to the leader's wounds, he would hide away in his cave, mixing and creating potions. But none was good enough, none even came close to the miracle he had created before.
And they needed humans. So many humans. If there wasn't a need for flesh in the flock, then he took whatever he could, from a tooth to a bone. But no mixture, no separation, and no magic helped, so all he could do was continue his work alone and far away from the flock who lived their lives without a care in the ocean. His name was Julian.
One day, something clicked in the merman. As he watched the human bodies fall down from a burning, wooden monstrosity, their feet kicking as they struggled to stay alive and one after one getting tugged under the water by his peers, he realized that this was just as bad as what humans used to do to his kind a few centuries ago. Desperately, he tried to tell the other mermaids to stop, but they only looked at him as if he had gone mad, shoving him away and telling him to stop being an idiot and do what he owes to the flock.
When another human fell into the water, the shadow of a big pillar of wood falling on top of them, Julian's body reacted before he could think about his actions. As if it was destiny for those two to work together, the human ducked underwater, right into his arms and as fast as he could, without making anyone else notice, he took the human to an island he knew. It was close to his cave, but far enough from the flock and he was pleased with his doings, hoping it would end their endless consume of humans.
Julian worked hard to keep the human alive, their condition dire and in need of aid. Until they woke up for the first time, he had always been with them from morning till night. If he wanted their help later, he knew from his experiences that he needed to gain their trust. But something changed before he could receive either of these two things, something, that would change his life entirely too.
At times, he would tend to the needs of the flock and the leader, watching over the human from the safety of his water. He was so surprised when he got to see them awake for the first time, his reflex telling him to disappear. But he was too curious and eager to learn about them for his own good. For the first time, he saw a real chance in creating a serum with the help of the human, and it urged him to keep watch over them.
Seeing their struggles and how they overcame them was something he had never been able to witness before. The sheer willpower to survive though they looked like they were giving up every other minute, it captivated him. He grew some respect for the human race, something he had never had before as they were nothing more than a means to an end for his species. And without even realizing it, when he looked into their eyes for the first time, a passion started to beat inside of him like there had never been before. Something hard to describe, something incredible.
I believe you know what happened from here on out, right? The get to know each other, the realization about their feelings, the heartbreak. All those things that happened before they parted ways at the beach of the pirate's hometown, promising each other their eternal devotion. Well, this story is not another fairytale, this is just a simple story of two lives uniting as one. What happened after their separation you might ask, well, let me tell you about it.
The human, in pain and with many struggles, managed to reach their hometown, where they were welcomed with open arms. Many had feared the sinking of their ship, and they were handled like a wonder to have survived. While human doctors took care of them, they told everyone the whole story of what had happened, gave all the families the knowledge of their beloved whereabouts. Everyone was thankful for them to come back, though they also worried.
You see, these humans believed in shipwrecks, in pirates, and in canons. They did not believe in fairytales. If they had confronted the human with their doubts a few months ago, undoubtedly, they would have agreed. But now, they did not argue. Even if everyone thought they had gone mad, the human kept believing in the mermaids and especially in the merman that was waiting at the beach for their return.
And did they return, you ask? They did! Many moons had passed since they left, their body needing the time to heal. But they didn't even need to call for him, Julian was right there when they stepped into the water, the two holding each other like they never had before. Then and there, they let go of the last insecurities and doubts they had about their lives and each other, making many more promises and sharing more kisses, now that they finally could. A lot had happened, and the human was eager to tell him, presenting him with what they had done and asking if he agreed to their plans, to which he eagerly nodded.
With the help of their family and any extra hands that came to honor the pirate that had survived the shipwreck, they build a house on the beach. Small, cozy. It stood over the water, completed with a hatch for Julian, so he could come in whenever he wanted. Like in their dream, they build a dock too, and though there was no forest, they cultivated their own plants with Julian's help. With selling their vegetables, shells, and pearls - which the merman was kind enough to bring home - the two of them managed to buy a lot of books for Julian to read and survive even in the winters, cuddled together in their shared home.
A few times a year, Julian's family would come to visit, and they would cook them a feast to enjoy before sending them back home. Julian only went back to his flock two times to get some of his belongings, and he wasn't welcomed very warmly, so he stayed with the human for the rest of his life. They would swim together in the summer, eat dinner every evening and talk about everything. Sometimes they would argue, but it never was bad enough for their bond to break.
Many, many years passed that those two stayed together. Humans were wondering about the lonely elderly that lived on the beach, that would tell their children funny stories about pirates and mermaids, but they never questioned them either. Like Julian had told them so long ago, he aged with them, his hair turning grey, his eyesight growing bad. But he never stopped making them laugh and singing to them, even when his voice started to crack with every note he let out.
When his family came over for the last time, they said their goodbyes, knowing they would not find him at the house at the beach anymore if they ever returned. For the first time, his sister cried, and so did Julian. Mazelinka didn't, and he asked her to take care of his sister for him, apologizing over and over that he could not stay. Only when they had already said their farewells and swam away, the two mermaids held hands as they cried and grieved for their dying brother and son.
But when Julian returned to his home, he found his human, weakened by age, coughing his name quietly. And he got to their bed, holding their hand. "If I die, I want to be with you," they said, using all the strength they had left in them to get out of the bed. "So please, Julian, can't you take me with you?" Of course, he agreed, knowing his time with them was little and his own just as over as theirs. So, in the middle of summer, around the time they had met for the first time, many decades before, the two swam out into the ocean together for the last time. The human was barely able to hold themselves over water, so he laid them on his chest, letting them listen to his faint heartbeat, holding them like they taught him too.
"I love you, Julian. I have loved you for many years now, and I will love you for many lives more," they said. "I shall love you for for the same lives then, my dear. I can't wait to find you and hold you in the next one."
And as silent, as they had arrived at the mainland, they disappeared from it. Leaving behind a house, countless books, and some shells and pearls.
For them to never be seen again, behind the white crowns of seafoam.
