She should have kept her dear baby sister under a more watchful eye. Should not have let her leave the Kingdom. Should not have let herself be swept up by the waves of naïvety, should not have believed that her sister was truly just treasure hunting—

“Crimson Coral Cookie.”

Crimson Coral snaps to attention at the sound of her sister.

A soft voice, more flat in tone than Aquamarine Cookie or Gold Citrine Cookie, both of whom bothered her far more often—Mystic Opal Cookie. The loner of the Gem Mermaids.

“Mystic Opal Cookie,” she addresses her, breath swept away, gills closed, temporarily startled. “I was not expecting you. Is there anything you wish to report?”

“No,” Mystic Opal replies simply. “I just wanted to check up on you.”

“There is no need to do such a thing,” Crimson Coral asserts. “I am perfectly fine.”

“…For the sake of both of us, don’t lie to me.”
