An excerpt from that thing I started last night!
Pairing: F!Amell/Zevran/Anders
CW for implied blood magic/mention of self harm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cold and hungry, completely sopping wet from the rain—Merielle sits shivering in her new room she now shares with several other apprentices. An ache settles into her bones quickly just from sitting so straight and proper on her stool, but they told her not to move. The last time she disobeyed orders the punishment hurt more than a bodyache. What the poor mage wouldn’t do for a damned blanket.
Eventually they would need to see to her. Open wounds still sting under her bandages—lacerations from her time spent at Montsimmard. It would not be long before an infection set in with how rough the templars had been with her, shoving her into the dirt and muck, tripping her every chance they got. Though Meri does her best not to think about that.
It’s best not to stoke that fire again.
Thankfully, a distraction presents itself in the form of a tabby cat sneaking into the large room. If Merielle had not been staring at the small crack along the jam she would have missed it. Those large green eyes that regard her with curiosity, the flick of tail and ear as they pass by to jump onto one of the beds. Must belong to one of the other apprentices, or at the very least be friendly with one.
She briefly wonders if there’s a chance she could find a cat of her own. How many years had it been since she’d seen Kingsley? Almost six? A flash of a memory plays in the back of her mind; long white fur, soft against her cheeks when she cried. He wore a bell that Mother had carefully tied around his chubby neck with a length of crimson ribbon. His meow could wake the dead and often did, the house alight with his conversations.
Something akin to a smile twitches at the corner of Merielle’s pale lips while she thinks on that memory. She was so fond of that cat, she wonders if Kingsley still keeps her mother company. Those thoughts, however, are unceremoniously interrupted when the door opens much wider suddenly. Though it is no scowling templar that enters the room, it is another mage.
All gangly limbs and sandy blonde hair that falls in his face, only halfway tied back with some twine. A spray of freckles gives his pale complexion some texture but otherwise he is ghostly —not that Merielle can judge, considering how past she is. Especially now. The boys brown eyes widen when he processes that another person is in the room and not just the cat he was undoubtedly following.

Thinking about my Amell and how everyone in the warden squad started off as enemies with her. Even Zevran who she MASSIVELY did not trust for a long time. It really hit her after the Circle fell that these people have been nothing but good to her and she spent all this time..pushing them away. It felt wrong to reach out when she was suffering but Merielle barely had to speak when they offered her a hand.
It was hard after that still but it was better knowing that she had friends rather than enemies. Had been a long time since she had friends

Merielle really went and harbored a crush on her childhood best friend for two decades, then got with a man who tried to kill the woman who saved her ass lmao. The Amell genes run strong in this one
Zevran upon meeting Anders for the first time fully realized his wife had an intense love for the man and sat her down, thank g*d. Someone has the braincell here

Walk Tall- A FFXV/DA AU
Chapter One: In which the Crown Princess sets out to marry her betrothed and she says goodbye to her father for the last time ---------------------------------------- The King's voice echoed out across the large throne room, striking all four of those standing before him, rattling the bones within their chests. But none more so than his daughter, the Crown Princess, Calliope. Her eyes did not defiantly watch King Aurelian, they kept themselves perfectly lowered to the base of his ornate throne; out of anxiety and a sobering respect. She couldn't truly imagine what this was like for her father, letting go of his only child so that she may go out on her own, let alone be that her destination was some place rather rocky at the moment. Haven was not know for it's peace, not since the Empire had taken it. It certainly weighed hard on her own heart. "The decreed hour has come. Set forth with my blessing, Princess Calliope" For a second Calliope did not register her fathers words and bowed at the last chance she had, trying to keep herself calm. Truthfully it would be liberating to finally leave the castle but it was a bit sickening to think of leaving King Aurelian. He was all she had known, even if he hadn't always really been there. It hadn't been his choice to be born into royalty anyway, just as it hadn't been hers. "Thank you, your Majesty" she said, with as much volume as possible. Really it came out much too quiet. "Take your leave and go in the grace of the gods" Her fathers words had never been softer but Calliope didn't have time to think upon his tone, and quickly acknowledged before turning on her heel. Of course she promptly almost bumped into Inka, her bodyguard the moment she dared to leave, who scrambled to move out of the way. Calliope felt a pang of embarrassment and guilt prickle her skin as she made a mental note to apologize later. She had completely forgotten that her friends had even been behind her. No doubt Calliope would get picked at for doing so by either Arthur or Halla, the other two companions besides Inka that were to set out with her to Haven. Most definitely the pick would come from Arthur, always on about knowing your surroundings. The sound of the others footsteps began echoing behind the princess as they each departed from their bow to Aurelian. Calliope didn't pay much attention to letting them catch up with her as the anxiety and anticipation of the journey felt like it would burst through her skin at any moment. After all it had been pretty long since she had seen Haven, not since that day of the attack...At least Solas would be happy to see her when she arrived. That thought didn't last too long as Calliope felt a lean arm wrap around her shoulders; she briefly hoped they were at least out of view of her father now. She quickly glanced upwards to see Halla walking beside her, all dark hair and gleaming eyes, always the more touchy of the three. At least for now she was smiling and not worrying. "Looks like you forgot we were there" "It's kind of hard to remember that three other people are behind me when they aren't even breathing", Calliope murmured, gently shrugging off her friends arm. "Your dad can be scary! He was being extra serious than usual" "Yeah well that only accounts for /you/ being deathly quiet, not the other two who have known him since they were kids!" Both Inka and Arthur had joined beside Halla and Calliope as the princess took a stab at them, Inka feigning hurt. "Oh Princess, you wound me. It was you who should have been more careful, you know I freeze up when His Majesty is being /serious/", the woman dramatically placed both hands over her heart as if she had been quite literally stabbed. That action brought a grin to both Arthur and Halla's faces, earning only an exasperated sigh from Calliope. They continued down the palace halls until they came to the large front doors that guarded the castle of Denerim, Calliope's anxiety growing larger and larger as they approached. Of course she would never have said a word but Arthur seemed to catch on, one of his gloved hands coming to rest softly upon Calliope's shoulder as they slowly descended the steps from the gilded doors towards their car. The princess drew some comfort from Arthur but it still didn't help knowing that her father would be all alone while she was away. He never really did well when he was by himself, that of which she knew. It was getting harder for him to walk everyday let alone make sure the Wall around his kingdom was at full capacity. Watching the black, sleek car inch closer and closer to her wasn't doing much help either. The royal staff had mentioned it was having issues before they were scheduled to leave, it looked stunning but it could break down at a moments notice if they weren't careful. Arthur would absolutely be driving for a good portion of the trip. "Wait, your Highness!" a familiar voice called out from the top of the stairs, stopping the four friends in their path. Calliope turned around just as her father and his Commander of the Kingsmages, Merielle Amell, came to rest a few steps above them. The woman had an arm laced in the Kings, helping him down the remaining steps to his daughter, barely making eye contact with Calliope. She never really did seem to care much about warmth. Every fiber of Commander Amells being radiated cold, but King Aurelian seemed to like her. It helped she was a beauty to rival that of most of the nobles, and she was a decorated war hero. "What is it, your Majesty?" Calliope asked, casting a weary glance at Amell. As usual her face was blank. When the princess looked back her father was on his own, stumbling down the last stair and a flare of panic made Calliope reach out for him, only to have Aurelian wave her away. A softness had settled across his usually harsh features. "I'm afraid I've left too much unsaid. You place a great burden on those who would bear with you" "You're one to talk", Calliope shot back with slight amusement. While she was away he would be hosting the Emperor and his lackeys from Tevinter, it wouldn't be a walk in the park for him either. King Aurelian looked past Calliope for a moment, a slight smile tugging at his lips as the pair approached the princess' companions. "I do not ask you to guide my wayward daughter, merely that you stay by her side" "Of course, your Grace", Arthur instantly replied, bowing gracefully as he had practiced many times. It almost made Calliope laugh the way it was a knee jerk reaction. Inka on the other hand seemed just as amused as her charge. "We will see the princess to Haven if it's the last thing we do" "Yeah what she said!" Halla chimed in nervously, bowing almost in time with Inka's slight gesture. Now it was getting really hard for Calliope not to laugh, at least now her anxiousness had died down. With a smirk she turned back to her father, fixing a fond gaze on him. "Well, I do hate to break this up but the motors running. I don't want the car to suddenly turn to junk," she chuckled and then waved at Amell, "He's in your hands Amell!" "And another thing! Do mind your manners around your charming groom to be, will you?" Aurelian interrupted, flashing a wink at his daughter as she looked back. This time Calliope really did laugh, something genuine and well needed. Once again she ascended a few steps to her father, and took a deep bow. "And your Majesty as well. Try to mind yours around our esteemed guests from Tevinter" "You have no cause for concern" "Nor do you", Calliope murmured quickly, noticing the softness beginning to leave her fathers face. It was going to be much harder to leave than she had previously thought. "Take heed on your journey, once you set forth you can not turn back" Aurelian said, his tone nearly commanding it. Calliope took a step back, her hands placed upon her hips as she felt a little offended, "You think I would?" "I need only know that you are ready to leave home behind" "Dunno about you but I'm ready as I'll ever be" Once more the princess turned away, hoping that would be the last of it, but a warm hand upon her shoulder brought her back. The King had that softness to him again but it was sorrowful sort of sadness, one that confused Calliope deeply. "Take care on the long road. Wheresoever you would go the line of Lavellan will follow. Dareth shiral, my daughter" Ah there it was. A long winded goodbye, as usual, but it still pulled at Calliope harder than she had thought. Her own pale hand lifted to her fathers shoulder and squeezed reassuringly. "Dareth shiral, papa" ---------------------------------------- Thank you to @judicaels , @lorspolairepeluche, and @lesbiananders for letting me use their characters. Sorry if it's kind of choppy right now, I wanted to crank this out and I'm a bit tired. I'm trying to get a feel for this AU as well. I may have directly quoted some parts of the beginning because it's JUST TOO GOOD 👀👀. More to come absolutely. And shout out to @onceuponaprime for taking such a big interest in this au!!

I also just realized that Meri’s cloak may sort of look like Cullen’s. It was not meant to look that way, and the only way she’d be wearing his cloak is to supremely annoy him at some social occasion. Merielle Amell out here taking clothing from the Commander just to be a damn annoyance bc she knows he won’t say anything back to her.
