It finally feels like Spring is here in Northern California, so I start getting more energy in my practice. In the Winter, I feel more passive, and practice a lot of supported, supine and restorative yoga poses. . . Once we move into the Spring Season, I can feel the energy wake up and start craving backbends and arm balances! . . Spring is represented by the Wood Element, and Meridians of the Liver and Gall Bladder. . . Wood is the first of the Five element and referred to as “young yang.” Meridians flow in ways that affects the physical body of fascia, ligaments and tendons, as well as the emotional body of mind and spirit. . . Spring season invites us to explore the Liver and Gallbladder meridians with poses which extend and stretch entire body, as the meridians trace the inner and outer sides of the body. . . Backbends are perfect for an extension of the body against normal (and painful!) sitting patterns of shoulders and hips bending forward at a desk! They have psychological and physiological benefits in the way they change mood and strengthen the body and build confidence. . . Learn how yoga can truly affect your life by the way it can affect your mood, and you will have found a best friend for life. . . Yoga is a healing practice, but you must have the ability to discern what is beneficial for YOU, and what is NOT. A backbend like this is great for me, but you might want a supported version.
