#merfolk are weird and complicated and enjoy complicated relationships

im thinking about merfolk relationships again and
so, on top of their hierarchy of relationships and complex social nesting structure, they, overall, are VERY polyamorous as a group. like, to the point to where their degree of polyamory was a huge driving force in their evolution, and you can absolutely see evidence of this in even their physical features which i cannot discuss here.
however i think it’s important to clarify that, within merfolk, said polyamory presents WILDLY different and has a huge range between different individuals. there are different models for this polyamory that pop up based on relationship hierarchy, status, individual, etc etc etc - and there are certain types of exclusivity that will pop up from time to time as well, both differing among individuals but also even over lifetimes.
like for miranda specifically, she’s what we might call demiromantic. which means, for a merfolk, she’ll have flings and be intimate with people who she’s not as close to, but these relationships are often limited in scale and in time, and if they start getting “too close” to her or demanding “too much” of her, she’ll break it off. in comparison, she’ll only have continued and extended relationships with those in more intimate social relationships with her, effectively only truly wanting and able to form more longform relationships with those who are within the “friend polycule” that i’ve brought up before. the social mobility of her relationships are more limited and you’re less likely to ever be cared about again after she’s had her fun, unless you belong to a continued and close relationship to her that already exists. likewise, she might go for periods where she’ll refuse to have relationships with those outside said “friend polycule”, or even where she’ll only ever be intimate with one person inside the “friend polycule” who she’s gone exclusive with.
and of course, multiple combinations of this are possible. there are merfolk who won’t have relationships with anyone within their “friend polycule” and merfolk who have no preference at all, or those who will switch it up.
in a way, a lot of these are defined by time, and even moreso because while sex is a more open issue for merfolk, it also comes with some unique aspects to them - such as the fact that sex is seen as a political agreement as well as a personal one, and thus one of miranda’s sexual partners could argue that she showed them political favor by doing so. this is even more complicated by the factor of how sex is used to resolve arguments and fights by merfolk, and thus its factored back into their complex social dynamics. i’ve joked that merfolk hate sex stops being hate sex when they cum - but its not unheard of for a merfolk to refuse to fuck someone on the basis of they’re still angry and don’t want to resolve the issue yet, or that they’re still CONVINCED that they’re in the right.
its also part of why miranda comes off as both promiscuous in her actions and sex-averse in her words and phrasing - it’s discouraged for her, as a royal of a significant title, to EVER openly discuss who she’s fucking and if she wants to fuck someone if they aren’t already in an existing legal agreement with her family or with significant favor from the vanderbilts already. resorting to innuendos and dressing it up as something else is fun too, yes, but it’s also a legal albi and something she can default back to if they ever decide to make what’s just personal fun for miranda into a legal ordeal that she has to clean up.
ironically this is why most royal couples seldom actually fuck. they’ll do it, sure, but they’re so often positioned against each other and given conflicting interests and ambitions that it often becomes an issue of..... they’re having an argument and neither party wants to resolve it. ironically they’ll say they fuck far more often than they actually do to buff up how they’re presented in the courts and being seen as more in-agreement with each other than they actually are.
but considering how the royal families operate within the community system of the merkingdom, this isn’t much of an issue regardless, and having any given royal couple get along isn’t really that important in the grand scheme of things. if anything, it can even be encouraged, depending on if said family wants to present itself as more fair and capable of handling complex issues, by having conflicting interests being balanced within their court without unfair bias to either.
in turn, being too invested in your partner can be considered a conflict of interests, as effectively a means of “mixing up work and pleasure”, and being too devoted to a single person and not to the family line as a whole.
in an entirely different turn of events, this is ironically why bellanda and miranda come off as less close than they actually are when in the courts - as their genuine connection and bond can be seen as an unfair bias and thus reason to suspect that they’ve passed up other, equally or more, qualified people and opportunities, because they gave an automatic pass to each other.

Since we've gotten a few chapters into the arranged marriage fic, I thought I should post some information about the characters i jotted down a few months ago :]
(This'll be a pretty long post haha. I've had so many thought about these sillies)
Since the story starts when they're young, I had to pit in some thoughts towards their family structures. And I didn't wanna give everyone a nuclear family, so I made sure they all had their own unique experiences
Jimmy and Lizzie's family has already been shown. It's just the two of them and their mom, and their father passed away when Jimmy was a baby. The royal family has very mixed heritage (since Jimmy’s a cod and Lizzie is a more axolotol like merfolk) much to their mothers dislike. Because she sucks. Their father was probably from the codlands or atleast their grandparents on one side were. Lizzie is more scared of their mother (a fear hardwired into her since she was little by constant pressure to be perfect or else) than Jimmy is (who feels like he has to stand up for himself because no one else will/to be recognized for who he is) and it ends up casuing some rifts between them, especially in regards to Jimmy transitioning
Sausage wasn't actually born into royal life, the current queen adopted him. If someone asks about it he says it's a long story, but basically his side of the family was disgraced for some reason a long time ago, and his parents (and maybe siblings) passed in an accident one night. And the queen wasn't just going to let her own blood be orphaned. They're not very such on how exactly theyre related, but Sausage calls the Queen his tía. They're relationship is pretty positive and he's usually following her around when he's bored.
Joel's family consists of just him and his parents. They all get along pretty well, his mother sharing his love of architecture and his father enjoyed the little pranks he pulls. Its overall a very healthy dynamic, and his parents also view Jimmy specifically as a second son (along with being very accepting of him). They serve as a contrast to the shitshow that is the Ocean Queen and her children.
I've always imagined Pix as being the oldest of the group (by a good bit too) in everything I've written, so I don't really seem him with parents? Though am!Pix des have his uncle, the current/soon to be retired king of Pixandria (I can't remember if he's retired or not by the end of chapter one lol.) His uncle is more extroverted than he is, but Pix gets along well with him. They also share the weird Vigil related powers/visions, though Pix has stronger ones than his uncle does.
Scott and Xornorth seem to also contrast Jimmy’s family, but the inner workings are a little more complicated. They actually share more things in common (so do fWhip and Gem, but we'll talk about them in a minute.) Rivendell royal family cosnistnts of a King, Queen, and the two princes. Both eleves get along with one parent more than the other. Xornoth likes their mother more and Scott likes their father. But there is a lot of pressure on both children to be proper and perfect, even if Xornoth is inheriting most of the power and influence since they're the eldest. For now anyways.
Pearl's family just consists of her and her father, and whatever wayward aunt or cousins drops by from time to time. Pearl was also adopted, like Sausage. But unlike him she wasn't already royal before that. Her family was the one chosen to lead when Gilded Hilenthia became a empire, since its still a pretty young one. Pearl loves her adopted father very much, and tries not to fret over her biological parents a lot. She hopes they gave her up for a good reason. And if they didn't, she wouldn't want to know. She's pretty content with how her life has gone, so she doesn't see much need to dig up a possibly upsetting past and risk losing it. Though sometimes she does wonder...
Joey has both of his birth parents, and no siblings. The lost empire is also pretty easygoing, so there aren't many standards he has to follow. He thinks his parents are laid back and amazing, and just doesn't get all the stress his peers go through. And then he express that in the rudest way possible, because he's Joey and a little spoiled brat sometimes.
fWhip and Gem's parents have recently gone through a divorce. And by recently I mean like, a few months before chapter one recently. Everything still pretty fresh, and they're seemingly "perfect" family has been overturned. Though looking back, both twins can definitely see the cracks showing. Their mother and father agrue a lot, with tends to sour any family visits. Which sucks, because it's the only time the twins really get to see each other, after almost being inseparable for about fifteen years. And neither of their parengs have very healthy coping mechnisms. I don't think they waht to hurt their children, it just happens. And was probably always going to happen with a relationship this strained. Gem is trying to fit into a peacemaker role, while fWhip just wants them to do the much healthier avoid each other if they agrue everytime. Safe to say it's causing some cracks in the twins dynamic.
Katheirne lives with both her parents, and the House Blossom royal family is said to be very fun and welcoming. And also big on parties. They give her some stress over her future duties as queen, but nothing to the extent of what her peers get. Her mother and father also aren't against housing any poor soul that needs it within the castle walsl, which had rubbed off on Kathrine.
Shrub lives with both her parents and her grandmother, who actually adopted her father when he was little. The four gnomes are very close to each other, and its normally to see two or more of them together. The only time their separate is when they need personal alone time, or something important had come up. Shrub loves her parents, but she really loves spending time with and learning a lot for her grandmother.
The next thing I had written down pre-fic was their ages, but only as of chapter one. By chapter four it's been about a year and a half, so just add that to these ages below if you must. (We'll get an age recount once I get the timeline more in order + once empires s1 plotting officially starts)
In order from oldest to youngest:
Pix - 21
Xornoth - 19
Lizzie - 17
Pearl - 16
Joey - 16
Sausage - 16
Scott - 15
fWhip - 15
Gem - 15
Joel - 15
Katherine - 14
Shrub - 14
Jimmy - 14
(And yes, Jimmy is the baby of the group. Shrub is a few months older than him, and Katherine is older than both of them by a handful of months as well. That orderinv goes for all 16 and 15 year Olds as well. [Pearl is the oldest of her year, while Scott is the oldest of his])
Adding 1 1/2 years onto those ages, chapter four tales place when Jimmy is 15 turning 16 and Fwhip will turn 17 by like..... chapter 12-14, looking ag my outline
Thats all! Hope you enoted the read :] it was fun getting all these thoughts out haha

Ooh ooh! Hi! Any recs for the free self published romance novels you've been reading? If you prefer to keep it private, then it's ok too!
No one ever wants me to ramble about the self published romance novels I've been reading. This is a great opportunity. I will use it.
So I'm going to mostly ignore the "free" aspect here bc 1) I've been using a site called BookLending.com to borrow kindle books as well, some of which aren't free, and 2) sometimes I download books from Amazon while they're free and then the sale ends, so most romance ebooks I'm reading for free you can't get for free currently, but, with that in mind. Some good self published romance novels.
What I've been reading recently:
Lidiya Foxglove is pretty fun. I'd classify her novels as erotic romance probably, but she also has some interesting fairy retelling and epic fantasy worldbuilding elements going on. Most recently I read her novels Beauty and the Goblin King and The Glass Princess. She has a thing for BDSM, weird traditions, arranged marriages, poly, and courts being overinvested in ppl's relationships. I can't take her books seriously at all but I don't think you're really supposed to. I think a couple of her books are free??
Drake LaMarque, also pretty fun! They have a couple series about pirates with a lot of m/m and poly dynamics. Also fantasy, cults, witches, shapeshifting cats, vampires, merfolk, and so on and so forth. Again, a lot of sex. (Much like self pubbed romance has weirder stuff going on than trad pubbed romance, I find erotic romance often has the most fun tropey shit. But maybe that's just me.) I don't think they have any free books right now though unless you have KU.
If you do have KU, the last time I got KU I read and enjoyed: Ante Up by Christine Jones (gambling! tragic backstories! fucked up ppl being surprisingly compatible!), Redemption by Kenya Wright (typical escape-from-abuse romance, TW for rape and violence, but still has a lot of fluffy feels with the main couple), and The King's Spinster Bride by Ruby Dixon (I feel a bit embarrassed to rec this bc it is arranged marriage trash with a side of exhibitionism but then I remember my fanfic is also trash). All these novels being m/f.
I also read a fair amount of regency romance. Frankly it's not my fave but, well. There's a lot of free regency romance ebooks on Amazon lols. Most recently The Perfect Debutante and Hell Hath No Fury. Both were really 3/5 star reads for me, but they had interesting concepts and I liked the female leads. And I'm pretty sure they're still free, but I may be wrong about that.
All time faves:
Talia Hibbert! I know she's trad pubbed too now but I haven't read her trad pubbed books and I have read Bad for the Boss, Undone by the Ex-Con, The Princess Trap, and The Roommate Risk, all of which are great. Hibbert is a prime example of that hopeful, people-getting-along kind of romance I was rambling about earlier. I just like all her characters always. Hibbert generally has at least one ebook available for free--right now she has Damaged Goods, which I haven't read but which is probably good bc Hibbert is good.
Hildred Billings(/Cynthia Dane, her other pen name)! My go-to for asshole millionaire lesbians. Not all her books are equally good but they're all at least a 3 from me. Peak Billings in my book is On the Rocks, With This Ring, Crash and Burn, and the Ren'Ai Rensai series but have I read all her novels? No bc there's too damn many of them. Billings is especially good for rich lesbians, BDSM, complicated gender feels, complicated relationships in general, and bisexuality. Out of her free books (permanent ones--she has a lot of sales), I'd recommend Hold Me, the first book in the Jiai Jouwa series. I read it a couple years ago so I don't remember it super well but I remember being invested in the Plot. It was not a favorite but it was good.
Cole McCade! Now I'm straight up cheating bc yes I did buy his last book instead of getting it for free in any way. But he writes good romances. Idk they just have a lot of feelings and pretty language. He has this slow burn police procedural series that I've only read about half of that is fuckign excellent. In general you get a lot of angst, age difference m/m, angry sexual tension, and then eventually these slowly unfolding intimate relationships that are just very very sweet. I like his books very much. I don't think any of them are free but they are mostly cheap and also on KU.
More could be said, but I should really go to bed. If you're actually interested in reading a Hibbert, McCade or Billings that is not currently free, feel free to message me and I might be able to lend one to you via Kindle bc I own quite a few. LaMarque and Foxglove I borrowed from other ppl though, so I wouldn't be of any help there.

Reposting this bc the link got messed up when I changed URLs!!
My all time favorite Destiel fics, in no particular order. (More to be added over time) {last updated 10/08/2019}
Too Much TV Will Rot Your Brain by EndlessRain Rating: G Words: 7397 Summary: “Angel?” John asked. He had been in Heaven for a pretty long time, and had been hunting even longer, and he never had heard of angels actually existing.
“Oh for God’s sake,” Ellen said, “That’s your kid’s boyfriend!”
Notes: A short, sweet fic with mostly humor and a bit of angst mixed in. – How (thanks to Gabriel) Dean and Castiel (accidentally) raised each other (and Sam). by Vera Rating: E Words: 69693 Summary: In which, Gabriel meddles with the time line and Castiel becomes Dean’s angel rather sooner than intended.
Notes: This is a must-read, the writing is perfect and the idea is also perfect. Throwing Castiel into the boy’s lives from the start and the dynamic it brings is such an interesting take on the story.
Destiel, Actually by Bloodism Rating: E Words: 15973 Summary: Picture your typical rom-com cliché. Now picture Dean stuck in that rom-com cliché. With Castiel. Because that’s what happening to him - a crazy whirlwind of your typical-and-not-so-typical cliché’s. He’s playing the main lead in all of them and Castiel’s his counterpart. Of course, the culprit is obvious. Gabe’s enjoying himself too much, lying back on his favourite cloud with a tub of salted popcorn.
It was about time someone kicked the two knuckleheads into gear.
“And… ACTION!”
Notes: Funny & light-hearted, featuring everyone’s favorite trickster.
Angel’s Wild by LimonadeGaby, riseofthefallenone Rating: E Words: 389271 Summary: But that’s the whole reason he’s here, isn’t it? He’s not out here hunting Humans. He’s not even hunting deer, or bears, or anything else that featured in Bambi. He’s out here, freezing his nuts off every night, because he’s hunting Angels.
Sometimes Dean wishes that Angels were like how they’re described in the Bible. How people from time too old for him to care much about thought Angels were messengers and warriors of God, protectors of Humans. He knows that how they’re really described in the Bible is actually pretty terrifying, but at least they were told by God that they’re supposed to love Humans, right?
That’s a thousand times better than what Angels really turned out to be.
Notes: Another must-read. This fic is a huge, long and a bit of a slow-burn but its so worth it. One of the first destiel fics I fell in love with, an immersive AU with fanart included.
Things Dean Winchester Loves by tuesday Rating: M Words: 3623 Summary: Castiel makes a list, Sam gives good advice, and Dean takes a while to catch on.
In the Shadow of your Wings by Enochian Things Rating: M Words: 57268 Summary: Dean drains his bottle of beer, sets it on the table and gets up, heading for the kitchen. Maybe to fetch another, maybe to leave. But Castiel doesn’t want him to go, doesn’t want to leave this conversation unfinished; he remembers his regret of just a few hours ago, that Dean had never known how he loved him.
“Wait,” he says and gets to his feet as Dean passes by. They’re standing close – close enough that Castiel can feel the heat of Dean’s body, the vibrancy of his soul brushing against his grace. “Dean, I have to tell you something…”
Set after the S11 finale.
Notes: another long, slow-burn. The buildup in this fic is fantastic, dealing with a jealous and in-denial Dean while poor Cas is dealing with his own feelings. This fic is so in-character I can see it happening in the actual show.
– Everything Comes Back To You by VioletHaze Rating: E Words: 32970 Summary: Dean knew better. Of course he did. But Cas seemed so charmed by the antique-filled bed and breakfast that Dean went along with it when the proprietor mistook them for a couple. Telling himself it gave them a strategic advantage to be so close to the crime scene, he agreed to the weekend special she offered them. When the case ended up being a bust, they stuck around anyhow because hey, the second night was free…
Notes: I love love loveeee this fic. Canon!verse with fake/pretend relationship. Dean in denial with mutual pining? Yes please. – Sam Winchester Sees the Light (And Dean’s Awkward Boner Face) by YamiTami Rating: G Words: 2447 Summary: Castiel is falling and he has to start doing human things to save energy. That means eating for sustenance, sleeping, and learning how to use a washing machine. This leads to a revelation.
Shamelessly inspired by a gifset of Misha putting a shirt on.
The Mirror by cloudyjenn Rating: M Words: 24568 Summary: When Dean touches a strange mirror, he’s whisked away to one alternate reality after another and it doesn’t take him long to realize the universe is trying to tell him something.
Notes: This. fic. is. amazing. I love reading about AU versions of the boys and this one has plenty of variety. Cute with a bit of angst mixed in.
In Your Sweet Little Bungalow by annodominique Rating: E Words: 13680 Summary: All things considered, Castiel has a house. All things considered, Castiel has a life. Without Dean.
It has been seven years since Sam died, seven years since Dean left Castiel, broken and human, and disconnected from humanity. Cas had to cope on his own somewhere along the way. He chose a little town of Oregon to settle in.
Seven years, and Dean shows up at his door on a chilly February night, saying the stupidest set of words to ever be said to Castiel’s face.
“I was–just passing by the neighborhood. Thought I’d drop by…to see you.”
And Cas doesn’t know what to do.
Notes: This fic is so angsty but so worth it.
When the Bough Breaks by captainshakespear, deanisthesun Rating: M Words: 73963 Summary: Years after the Darkness has been defeated, Dean and Cas are living the apple pie life in small-town Kansas. They don’t hunt anymore, and would like to keep it that way, but some young hunters knocking at their door have different plans.
Dean, Cas and Sam reluctantly agree to help out, but what ought to be a simple case becomes way more complicated and dangerous than they counted on. And when the hunt starts to invade the normal lives they’ve carved out for themselves and their kids, Dean and Cas begin to wonder if escaping the hunting life altogether might have been wishful thinking.
Home is Where by ChasingRabbits Rating: E Words: 15170 Summary: Casual vagrant Dean Winchester blows into Palo Alto to check on his little brother. What is meant to be a quick visit ends up drawing out when he meets and accidentally ends up clicking with Sam’s strange, grad student roommate Castiel.
Notes: non-canon verse AU where Cas has Asperger’s and is Sam’s roommate, this fic is very cute.
Out of the Deep by riseofthefallenone Rating: E Words: 488608 Summary: Stay away from the light-beds. Stay in the deep.
It is the first thing hatchlings are taught the moment their fans unfurl and they can swim without their parents to buoy them along. It is the first rule, the first law. It is the beginning of every boogey-monster bedtime story told when they settle against the cliffs to sleep.
Castiel should have listened better.
Notes: I cannot express how much I love this fic. Another huge AU with copious amounts of fanart and detail. Slow-burn, Merfolk AU. I will admit I was hesitant to read this at first as I don’t usually like mermaid/merfolk AUs but this story is so beautifully written and the attention to detail is amazing. Riseofthefallenone never ceases to amaze me.
Going Postal by captainbarnes Rating: Not Rated Words: 6799 Summary: Castiel,
Hi. My name’s Dean, just Dean — that’s all you’re getting out of me.
I don’t really know what else to say, I’m not good at this and I really don’t want to talk much. But it’s for a grade, and I’m already flunking English, so I guess I don’t have a choice.
Your name is weird as fuck.
— Dean
Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak became pen pals because of a school assignment, and they tried not to get attached to one another. They really did. Sort of. Barely.
King of the Road by loversantiquities Rating: E Words: 15890 Summary: Contracted out by the local police in Moriarty, New Mexico, Dean is sent to investigate the happenings around a church outside of town, the Angel-worshiping congregation reportedly flocking to the location in recent days. As it turns out, though, instead of snake charmers or devil worshipers, Dean finds an Angel crucified to the cross, said Angel unreasonably snarky despite being tied up against his will.
Turning over Castiel to the authorities, though, doesn’t work in Dean’s favor. With nowhere to go and Heaven having abandoned him, Dean agrees to haul Castiel across the country on two conditions–he doesn’t smoke in the car, and he doesn’t rob convenience stores in broad daylight.
God, Dean might actually kill him before this is over.
Rock of Ages by winter_of_our_Discontent Rating: T Words: 7430 Summary: It starts because they need a rock. Not, of course, just any rock, but apparently this particular critter needs an Aztec-style obsidian-and-jade dagger right through its human-teeth-and-eyeball-eating heart to actually kill it.
In which Cas gets a ring, and Dean (finally) gets a clue.
So There It Is, I’ve Said It All by PorcupineGirl Rating: G Words: 3898 Summary: “Why, do you have something you need to say to me that you don’t think I’ll like?”
I think I’m in love with you.
“Yeah. I guess so.“
Receipts by surlybobbies Rating: T Words: 1391 Summary: He’s about to put the receipt down, no harm done, when something about it catches his eye. Pen ink, on the back. He flips it around and reads:
With Dean. He shared his pie with me. His smile was radiant.
Dean stares. Reads it again. Nothing’s changed.
What? -
The Fourth Wall by entanglednow
Rating: T-E (this is a series so different parts have different ratings)  Words: 40,339 Summary:  (There’s not an exact summary for the whole thing since its a series of 15 different works but basically the boys discover fanfiction about themselves and things get wild) I can’t believe I didn’t add this one before but its one of my all time favorites! I’ve read it multiple times because its just that good. Lighthearted and funny. This series also includes Samifer which I’m a big fan of (but if you’re not into that each part is appropriately tagged so you can skip over it).
-
Someone Who’s Feeling For Me by ellispark Rating: M  Words: 45,876 Summary:  Dean sees her for the first time in nearly six years in some no-name town in Idaho, and it's panic at first sight. Lisa Braeden, the one woman Dean ever actually had a shot at a real life with, back from where he buried her in his mind. And her hand is on Cas's arm like it's no big deal, like it belongs there. Cas, Dean's dorky, sweet, badass, angelic best friend, and he's just standing there next to Lisa and not moving her hand away. Dean feels the jealousy rising, and it's not directed where he expected it to be. Because it takes this exact moment for Dean to realize he's in love with his best friend. He's in love with his best friend, and Lisa is looking at Cas like he's the best thing since automatic rifles, and Dean is utterly fucked.  Notes: Lots of pining, supportive Sam, angst with a happy ending, the good shit.  - Everyone is Trying to Get to the Bar by Balder12 Rating: E Words: 8,111 Summary:  Dean still has enemies in Heaven. True!form Castiel to the rescue!
Notes: I love true!form cas fics and this one is written beautifully, the ending seemed a little rushed to me but other than that I really enjoyed this fic.
-
As You Pass Through Me by wannaliveindeansdimples Rating: E Words: 30,548 Summary: Cas has lived in this house all his life... and since his untimely death. The last thing he wants is a new roommate, but it seems he's getting one anyway.
Notes: a wonderful non-canonverse AU with ghost!Cas....but there’s a twist! This fic is incredibly cute and entertaining and makes me smile everytime I read it. There’s a little bit of what could be considered dub-con in a few chapters but before said chapters the author usually has a note at the beginning.

Could I get a basic bio of each of your OCs? I've been in and out of the magic roleplaying community and would love to know ^^
Alrighty. I started making individual pages for them here but haven’t been very consistent with it. So, to sum them up quickly, below a read more because there’s a LOT of it:
Rizana: Selesnya gardener originally from a fanplane, with the ability to shift between his human form and a swarm of bees. But generally just a very good gardeners, that sells the best honey you’ve ever tasted.
Ivegard: Flamekin from Lorwyn, planewalker, pilgrim and empath. Hesitated between two careers, started a pilgrimage, got doused and drowned, sparked to Zendikar as a cinder, made a pilgrimage there and a couple atrocities to get to Omnath’s prison, contact with him reignited her flame and sent them in the Multiverse. Tends to overexert and finishes most of her fights with need for medical help.
Ecxilet: An esperite vedalken planeswalker that carries two sentient relics from a fan-plane, Ferely. Has been learning artifice on Kaladesh the last few months and is exploring the possibilities of using etherium for prosthetics or aesthetics (as opposed to full replacements like on esper). Also in a relationship with @vens3r’s Vahn currently. Was handling logistics from a small city on Esper, a Jundi dragon attacked with remains from his former boyfriend, killed some of his friends, he went out in the desert to abandon everything, found the relics and them latching to his mind plus the emotional overflow from earlier sparked him right in Amonkhet’s desert where he struck a deal with the less benevolent of the two relics to  be able to planeswalk even though he didn’t have the time to figure planeswalking out. Also part of the Cursetamer arc, an overarching story written mostly by me with Ery’s help featuring another character. The arc is finished now, except for a little tidying up that might happen at some point, and can be found here. Technically Cethrin and Dulbert, the two relics, are independent characters too but I won’t expand too much on them here.
Nyrhen: An elf planeswalker from Lorwyn (pre-lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocs), very full of himself and a jerk all around. His magic makes people what they truly are (or deeply think they are), with limitations. He sparked when his arm was cut of to avoid him being contaminated by nettlevines. It isn’t so much the pain than the realization he’d become Eyeblight that sparked him. His arm got better since. Very stylish, very disregarding. Still alive thanks to his magic.
Jova & Arega: Not planeswalkers (that anyone knows of). Jova is a human Simic scientist like any other. She is specialized in the study and progress of the growing cocoons and evolutionary vats the Simic use. Arega is an artificial intelligent Simic lifeform, hybrid of a bunch of stuff that she made and they follows the tracks of Jova. A lot of stuff about them is still secret until someone discovers it, but it has been revealed behind the scene that Arega is able to change bodies to take control of various krasises.
Icalia: An aven planeswalker from dominaria that has her personal small plane (her Haven) with an hotel/negotiation neutral ground for planeswalkers in it. She deals in favors, and her powers are mostly silence-based, both magical and mundane silence. She sparked during the phyrexian invasion and in a grey area of lore that she affected quite a lot, see her sparking story. She’s been involved a lot with my fanplane of Moloni and I’ve written a few more chapters of her past, but in French and haven’t translated them yet. She’s also kind of a hub character of mine, and knows most (not all) of my other ‘walkers, and can be assumed realistically to know of any planeswalker character if need be for rp purposes. Her Haven’s personnel is mostly constituted of her descendants on various degrees, she was married a few centuries ago but her husband passed away.
The Cursetamer: Ange Casselant of real name, an ‘overpowered’ character that served as antagonist for the arc mentioned before. Lich planeswalker that has found a way to bypass normal problems linked to lichhood by making her phylactery a nearly indestructible magical item. And exploiting a god(dess?)’s powers to transfer her soul to it to avoid any damage that would extinguish her planeswalker spark. Currently resides on Innistrad with her partner, Annalise, after having finally found a way to transfer Annalise back to a body (it’s complicated). She’s handling a small town of refugees/voluntary test subjects in a massive underground complex on Innistrad, and she specializes in soul study and science. Her magic, aside from being nearly immortal, mostly exploits magical relics that she made or studied to replicate their effects.
Baheel: A planebound Aetherborn from Kaladesh, Baheel cooks for their own, very small and very local, restaurant. Everything in the restaurant is free, Baheel does it because they love cooking (even though they can’t eat themselves) and love when people enjoy tasting their food (as an Aetherborn, she relishes in those emotions, even). They have a weak point for dates and couples in their restaurant too, given that they tend to be sweeter than usual… As long as the clients are not weirded out by the aetherborn looking at them throughout the whole meal.
Dancing-Hands: Kamigawan Kitsune planeswalker with origami-based magic. Currently thinks he destroys the world to create a new one every time he planeswalks, so he swore to never do it again. First planeswalk was to Tarkir, where he studied under an Ojutai Skywise, but then planeswalked again (twice) since, and feels very guilty for it.
Dolores: A young-ish Azra planeswalker from Ferely with pain-based powers that works as a torturer in Paliano, thinking she’s smarter than any of the factions (plural) she’s working for. She uses a different name on each plane she visits, due to part tradition, part reality that on Ferely people can have power over Azras if they know their true and complete name.
Arnoss: A ghavalek (Gharial-looking people) planeswalker, from Ocaleum, @land-ofthebooty ‘s underwater fanplane. Can’t really do magic aside from basic one and an enchantment tied to him making him more resilient and stronger based on how many and how much people need him in his surroundings. Sometimes work as bodyguard. Sparked by the caravan he was a member of getting attacked and slaughtered by merfolks.
I think that’s all for now! I’ve got a couple other background characters I’ve made and used (some of the staff in Icalia’s Haven, a seer, Gerru, on Deka, using meteo predictions to extrapolate the future from cloud patterns, etc…) but they come up when they’re needed.
