Azalin Reviews: Darklord Meredoth
Domain: Nocturnal Sea Domain Formation: 635 BC Power Level:💀💀💀💀⚫ Sources: Domains of Dread (2e), Ship of Horrors (2e), Nocturnal Sea Gazetteer (non-canon), Sir not appearing in 5e
Meredoth is the Darklord of Nebligotode, which became the Nocturnal Sea during the Grand Conjunction in 750 BC. There were a lot of retcons and changes between his rule of Nebligotode and the Nocturnal Sea, so I will be utilizing the story after the Grand Conjunction as well as some “non-canon” material provided by the Fraternity of Shadows. There is no mention of Meredoth in 5e, but the Nocturnal Sea is briefly referenced in the write up on Darkon. Does that make me your ruler, Meredoth? That would be amusing and perhaps a reason for me to return to my dreaded prison.
Meredoth is confined to the island of Todstein, an island that is as cold and uninviting as Meredoth himself. He constantly attempts to defy the “no man is an island” saying. How exactly did he come to this realm? Let’s take a brief look at his life. Meredoth was born in the Alphatain Empire in Mystara and raised by golems. This isn’t your classic “raised by wolves because their parents died and something took pity on the child” story. This was because his parents didn’t want to bother raising him themselves. I’ve witnessed many of his little temper tantrums, so I can understand where they’re coming from. Still, one should not neglect one’s children. It never ends well.
His father’s parenting skills ended at creating a few golems to look after him and his mother preferred using Enchantments to keep him well-behaved and disciplined. In addition to his rather love-deprived upbringing, he witnessed his mother become addicted to a magical drug known as tsongha which had a relaxing, yet withering effect on the user’s mind.
The Alphatain Empire was a Magocracy, which essentially equates to those with talent in the arcane are granted high ranks in society. Though something I can respect, a dangerous prospect when one considers the effects magical experimentation can have on the mind. Meredoth met those requirements and discovered his extraordinary skills in Necromancy while studying at university. He even found himself making friends and perhaps he would have been more sympathetic to the living if one of his so called friends hadn’t just used Meredoth to steal his research and claim it for themselves. This resulted in Meredoth using tsongha on the betrayer and claiming their research in turn. A practice he repeated on many occasions.
Meredoth continued his research, conducting experiments on living animals and people he believed would not be missed. His ultimate goal was to create an intelligent servant devoid of troublesome emotions and personal ambitions. Of course, Enchantment would have been a better form of magic to achieve such things, but Meredoth’s skill in that school is wholly inadequate. Ultimately, he failed.
As his own flesh began to age, Meredoth sought out means to become immortal. He believed lichdom beneath him. I would argue that he likely does not have the talent to perform the necessary rituals seeing as some of it requires the use of Enchantment magic, which, as we know, he sorely lacks skill in, but he remains adamant that true immortality is not a state of undeath. The path to “ascension” was also dismissed as taking up too much of his time. A rather lame excuse considering if one becomes immortal through such efforts, then the time to reach one’s goal is irrelevant. In the end, he cheated and used elixirs created by someone else to maintain an age of about 60.
Meredoth became a rather formidable wizard and as such would be given a high rank within the Alphatain Empire. However, he was also not well liked and his disregard for all things living made him a very dangerous figure to be given any political power. So, they made him a Baron of a land where they hoped he could do little damage. This suited Meredoth and he established himself on a remote island and let whatever retainers he had actually run things. To say he was a neglectful ruler would be an understatement.
The first winter in his Barony was cruel and resulted in the death of many of his retainers. Meredoth thought the best solution was to raise all of these retainers as mindless undead, something his main retainer objected to. Meredoth then killed that retainer, which gave him one more zombie but also left him to deal with the day-to-day problems from his people.
Meredoth wanted nothing more than to be left alone with his research instead of tiring things such as the defense of his realm or food shortages, yet still he found himself bothered by an increasing number of retainers and immigrants. Annoyed, he came up with a solution to the food shortage and these interruptions to his research. He poisoned all of his people and made them into zombies that retained their intelligence, yet were solely loyal to their creator. Now, food wasn’t an issue and they would leave him alone.
That same evening, a storm descended upon his island and transported it and Meredoth to the Demplanes of Dread. It is always winter on Meredoth’s little island. Though living, Meredoth has the purplish complexion and icy touch of a corpse. The Dark Powers granted him a small boon and delayed his aging. Yet not a true form of immortality, age slowly creeps into his bones year after year. Just as his parents, even the Dark Powers were reluctant to accept him and it took a century of his time in the Mists before they decided to make him an official Darklord.
Meredoth still excels at Necromancy and prefers life among his zombies over the living. He has also created a number of unique spells to suit his new, wintery Domain, including snow golems and a snow to stone spell. He looks like your standard Halloween costume shop wizard, wearing tattered robes accompanied by long white hair and beard. Our tormentors granted him a number of boons, allowing him to control the waters around his island, sensing when someone visits his island, and granting him immunity to the lesser undead.
Meredoth is an accomplished Necromancer, likely one of the most powerful in the Domains of Dread. He’s also skilled in Evocation and if he had applied himself to other schools of magic, he could have been one of the most powerful Wizards to roam the Mists, but he settled on his one trick skeletal pony routine. He views the living as nothing more than experiments, not worth his time or attention unless they’re on a slab in his laboratory.
Personality wise, Meredoth is like a small child always craving attention, yet loathing it whenever he receives it (which is rare). Still, I must admit he is quite powerful and though he will never find a path to the immortality he seeks, his skills in Necromancy and to a lesser extent, Evocation, cannot be denied.

Despite all rumors, this one never came with zombie flesh trapped in that unruly beard. Too bad, that would've been hardcore.

Since you want to know about my ocs, lwt me gush a bit about Yoruk since I've started writing that next bit for Fangthane's Folly.
Yoruk is such a sweetie, he's been on an expidition on the other side of the world for the last two years or so and has just made it home. As for why he was away... that's complicated and requires a bit of inside knowledge of Meredoth's backstory (which I will get around to writing eventually). The point being that he has no idea what's been going on in Fangthane and is about fo get the rudest awakening of his life just shortly.
I'm currently debating whether to use a scene I wrote ages ago to cover him finding out half of what's been going on, and then hitting him with the bombshell of Merri's arrival back in Fangthane and her arrest in a second story. Or if I want him to find out about the latter first then start asking about all the rest... Decisions, decisions.
oooh he sounds really interesting!! he seems sweet for sure :0
I think it would make sense from the little exposition I have for him to find out the latter first! Like "Wait what? what else has happened?" That's just my meagre two cents though I obviously don't have all the context and it's not my story xD

I=the story is beginning on a bright ad suny mornin in town. It was the weeked so everyon was go ouside for a fun relax time.
All the people i the city were havin a good time. Eccept one person; the patient who went to Graze Anatony Hospital cuz she had stomack crams and a bad feelins in to the bone.
Patien, whos named was Catharine Candleton, got up one morning with sickness/ “i need to go to go hospital” she says to hefrself and thro th driving, she was arrive at Grats Antimony Hispital. “Now tell me what’s rwong?” Merendit querried. “I awoke up this morinh in hoterrible pain and a sever feelin of nausha.” was the answer. Merrdith used her stehoscope to see inside the stomach. “Everythig appears to be in order in this department” she diagnosed. She also did xrays also did and blood tests and no infromation was found. “Hm” said the wise doctor in her deep thoughts, :”i should need a second oponion here” so she called good firend dr. alex karev.
Alex proceeded thru door. “What is the problem” he implord, but he was swayed gently and held a beer bottle. “Alex, you are a druggy lazybobes, and your hart is fulled with instability. But we require yur constulation” ad Vatherine glanchd nervously at the surgeons who coud not find out what was happenin in her churning tummy.
Alex look at Katrine’s results and ould not sees the probelms. “We must use science to observed the condition ins observation” was his sulution. So merith run to the other side of hospisal to talk to collegue, dr. miranda balley.
“Maranda, you have always the most intelligently person in hospital” “thank you for kindly compliment” said mirdana in distance, as she look out window. “Why the melandcholy? melancholu” asks neredith. “My son has a difficult tiuime, he was got shot”
This developent was an shock to Merefith. “What?!?? He was always a good boy! This is very concerning! I am concern” she speaks with olume. “I donrt now the details of the tragic accident,” says Midanda as looks of sad.
Doctro Merdcisth place hand gentl;y on sholder. “Mitandra, i sorry for yur son, but rite now, we need your help! What is the technologue aavilable to us? “so miranda borugt out a experimental machone to preform teh diagnos.
The machine stickd needle in Jatharine’s belly. It was begun beeped loudly and lights went off. “O no” says miranda. “Ms Candletown, i so sorry, but this is frigtening disease. We must operate with speed!” and she started jammin scalples
“What?” says catherine worried. “Yo have rare infecton. Your stomach is about to go spupernova~! if it blow, we will all pay for the malady” it was a big shiock to the hole room. “What’” say Cataheryin. “We never had a patent with supernova stomach befor. Can we reely ready to operate??” questond Allex.
“YES WE CAN” Meredsith yell with bravery. She coragously anesthestheticed Cathrone and begun the surgeon. the surgery was intense, but after the intence surgery
It was a success!! Kathrin Candeton was cure, and the hospital was save, for the infected orgens did not blow up. A big party happen, with ballons and confetties.
“Wow mereedith, this was are biggest case yet! We can now retire and love a life together!” says Alex with kiss to Meredoth. “WAIT” shuts receptonist. They have disocovered a ring of TERROR SMUGGLERS operating in the hospital basement.
“OH NO, they must be snuggling in a bomb!” says Miranda, who recognosed them cuz they were who shot her son for the valourous act of standin up to ther neferious plots.;
“We call police” say receptinist, and they look out window for what would save hospital. But the plolice send a drone to SHOOT the hispotal and kill them terror.
“But if howpital is shot, it wil lbe destory” was meredithjs assesment. “Not to worry” say hospital administrander, “we will stop drone from blow up hospital by shooting it back” the staff and patents cheer. “We will explode the hospital and the debris will kil drone.”
“But that will also destroy the hospital!” merefif ponted out. everyone was scared in terror;. Alex run to cut the wires to the self-destruting boms, but the drone was still in action. “I have plan” say Kathryne. “You saved me, now it my turn to save you. I will stop the dron” and using powers aquired in surgery, she jump out windo. “Good thing i learn parkours”, she thout and clambered to roof. From that, she jumped onto drone, andpunched it down. Drone blow up in fiery catastrophy
The terror smuglers herd the exploding and went outside cuz they thot it was fireworks and were missin a holiday parade. but the parade was police who got them all arrest in an safe + responsable maner.
The hospital was save, and smunglers were thuarted. Mirdanda’s son got better and Catherine Cadleton was hailed a hero for her brave sacriface and became friends with all the hospital.
Meredit and alex used the money from sugery to retire and got married in Bahamas.
The end
The morale of this story is that polcie drones are a powerfull but danger technology, and we as a socity must decide how they should be used appropriately.

Meredith and Willow had wandered a little further from their campsite that day then normal. They had tried hunting nearby, but were having trouble getting food so they decided to move further out. Fortunately, they did manage to find berries and edible bark, and Willow killed a squirrel before they started making their way back. That was when Meredith noticed a girl laying in the grass. Thinking it was a walker, Meredith held her finger to her lips, signaling Willow to be quiet, as she tip toed over. Then, just when she had raised her knife with the intention of killing the walker girl, the seemingly alive girl pulled a gun on her. "Shit! I'm sorry! I thought you were a walker!" Meredoth gasped, dropping her knife as she stumbled back. "Don't shoot, please." Meredith begged as Willow cowered behind a tree.
Garfield and Arlene 🐾
Cody was coming to, and she felt someone near her – feverish instinct kicked in, causing her to grab her gun and pull the trigger, before her eyes even fully adjusted to the morning light. Fuck. Had she been here all night? She was lightning fast in her draw, and had the safety not been on, her aim would have been true, as well. “Fuck me sideways, damn it.” She groaned, taking the safety off, but not pulling the trigger this time, as the woman attempted to stand up. It didn’t work, and she ended up back in the same position, pain throbbing through her thigh.
“I may look like Garfield on a Monday right now, but I promise you I won’t miss. Tell me what the fuck you’re doing.” Of course, the hand normally surgeon ready steady, wavered, though Cody had no idea it was happening. The infection wasn’t life threatening (yet), but it was certainly on its’ way there. Another couple days, and it would have poisoned her blood.

Orc replaces Furies in announcement of new contract with the Dark Powers
The Furies of the Gray Wastes were scheduled today to announce a new, more draconian system of Powers Checks, one that granted the Dark Powers a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free sublicense to everyone’s suffering. “This revised system is intended to protect the Evil Brand* by reducing corrupter confusion, preventing good actors from challenging it...” said an excerpt from a purportedly leaked draft of the new Powers Check system scroll. All old pacts with the Dark Powers were to be revoked. (*Prerequisite for the feat they’re trying to get now.)
However, due to unforeseeable circumstances- merely technical closed border issues, really- the Furies failed to make an appearance for the momentous announcement. Unexpectedly, an Orc along with a kobold waving a black fag appeared in their place. Said Orc offered an alternative pact with powers previously unknown. Orcs have thus far been also been unknown in our worlds, but this turn of events may signify a rising tide of Orc appearances.
Since the rumors of a new Powers Check system began, the Furies have been missing. It’s been the longest time for their absence on record. A massive monster hunt for the missing fiends is now underway. At the same time, calls have been made for their their faces to be printed on milk cartons.
Some theorists say the Furies are merely hiding, watching, and waiting for this new Great Upheaval to blow over. In the meantime, sworn allegiances to the Legions of Night is dropping faster than Falkovnian soldiers during an invasion. Purportedly the Powers Check changes are the causes of the uproar.
“If they only had been more subtle, the fools might have gotten away with it,” said Meredoth, one expert on Necromantic Property and copywight infringement issues

Ah, Meredoth. Hope you are doing well and not slowly aging over time or anything along those lines.
Survey to spellcasters: do you touch bat guano with your hands?
How else would one handle the components? Unless one relies upon a spell focus, then yes, we do touch bat guano with our hands for casting such spells as fireball. Bat guano, at least in a temperate climate like Darkon, is about the size of a small seed and crumbles quite easily. It is, to say, not as unsettling as if one were to handle human feces. Spellcasters, when not in a pinch, will collect samples and dry them out before using as components in our castings.

Our Cantankerous Old Wizard on Staff replies, “I’m NOT Meredoth! The Ever Wise and Almighty Sage would NEVER be caught working with drudge journalists! But he did say to inform you he was going to ask about the newest version of your youth draining spell at our next book study, Firan. Other than that, yes things have been well enough for him.”
