I went into the environmental sciences building because it has my favorite bathroom. One of the people got really excited to see a person from a different program come in.
Walking around, the fire fighter class was also mildly curious.

Cool snake facts from documentary
(Please be aware that I have problems processing some audio and that the documentary I’m watching is a small bit old)
They’ve been here way longer than humans
A lot of variation of snakes, snakes mostly same shape
More than 2700 species
Religions often give snakes powers and meanings
70% of snakes hatch from eggs, others are born alive from an egg membrance (?) (I couldn’t hear the audio well enough and I couldn’t skip back without going to far back (blame old video systems))
Only a quarter of snakes have poisonous fangs
Snakes can’t really hear, but feel vibrations if their lower jaw is on the floor
Snakes have bad vision and they focus on movement
Some species of snakes have heatsensors located under the eye
They combine searching for movement + heat to find prey and are successful almost every time
Need for vision depends on the type of snake
Some nightsnakes eyes are very sensitive and their eyes get reduced to skits during the day
Most snakes can’t focus their eyes like humans, instead they move the lens around (like a camera)
There is a snake (I couldn’t hear it’s name ): ) that can focus its eyes by changing the ‘lens’ it can also see in the third dimension
Snakes taste air and smells with their tongue
All reptiles have a special organ (wich I again can’t hear the name of) wich helps with tasting the air
Green anacondas hunt dwarf canines (?) (it looks like something from the crocodile family)
Snakes can unhinge their jaw to swallow big things (I already knew this but it’s super cool)
Snake developing venom is one of the most recent things in their evolution
Some snakes hunt other snakes (like king cobra snakes, who is the biggest venomous snake)
Snakes aren’t agressive, bites to humans are in defense or an accident
Most snakes warn big mammals if their feeling endangered, but some animals don’t notice and get bit
Attacks are last resort
The amount of deaths in America due to snake bites aren’t much, even though many people get bitten due to making snakes feel threatened or accidents
Most people get bitten due to handeling snakes, or not being careful
Snakes are predators, but also prey
There is a snake who spits venom to attackers eyes
A cobra kind (I think the fake one) threatens prey and bluffs by making itself look bigger with its hood
Merecats prey on small snakes, they will take on a cobra if their children are threatened
There are snakes who are harmless, but pretend to be dangerous snakes for their safety
All snakes are anchestors of one creature, wich details of are unknown
There’s more stuff about dna and evelution but I found it uninteresting and didn’t pay attention
Snakes have many ribs
Flexing muscles let snakes move
Some big snakes move like caterpillars, wich looks more noticeable from close up
The rat snake can move like an accordion is small spaces, wich costs a lot of energy
There is a sea snake who lives in sea it is super cool, might research more later
Some snakes can climb vertically due to their belly scales
Belly scales are important in letting snakes move
Scales are part of the snakes skin, instead of purely being a covering. They protect the snake and make em elastic and flexible
Their function are as different as drawings and colors
Scales also have different shape depending on species
Snakes change their skin and shed
An transparent scale covers the eye of the snake gets a milky hue wich is a sign of shedding coming
There is more info on the shed skin, like the color pigments of the snake aren’t in the shed skin
Snakes rely on external heat and environment and can’t regulate their own body temperatures
Snakes can’t live above an attitude of 69 degrees
There is a snake who deals with cold weather by going underground with many others of its species.
The garten snakes cheat the production system by storing sperm inside their bodies (for both genders)
People don’t know how snakes choose their mates
The biologist don’t know where the babies go of the snakes who hide underground
Some male snakes fight eachother for the right to mate, it often looks like an unique dance
Some snakes leave their eggs behind after laying them
Snakes are often seen as demons in religion
There are many cultures who like snakes and respect them
Documentary over
Snakes are cool
