The Mercer Museum in Doylestown, PA (1916)

Designed by Henry Mercer, who lacked any architectural training, and built completely out of poured concrete in sections starting from the bottom. No plans were ever drawn, just rudimentary sketches that Mercer showed his concrete workers. It was built to house Mercer’s collection of early American artifacts from every day life.

Even the window mullions were concrete.

Checked out the #MercerMuseum this week in #Doylestown PA. Finished in 1916, it's six floors are wildly stuffed with Pre-Industrial Age tools and artifacts of daily life. #HenryChapmanMercer noticing the history of handmade trades disappearing with the advent of technology made it his mission to preserve every pre 1850 tool used in #BucksCounty and the surrounding areas. It's amazing what he collected and catalogued and then built a wacky fireproof building to display them to the world. Rusty and worn wooden things that probably seemed so mundane at the time but are now truly incredible to our 2016 brains. (at Mercer Museum & Library)
