A General History of F1: Where We Are Now

The 2024 season so far has been a season for dreamers. Some of the most poetic wins and losses have happened this year. There has been heartbreak, and heroics. Returns of a champion, and new winners. But that isn't exactly how the season started.

When Max Verstappen won the first few races, the racing world sighed and assumed it would be a 2023 repeat. While watching a driver dominate can be fun, most people were bored by how the season went. Where was the drama? Where was the spice? Where was the storytelling F1 is so famous for?

Now, I want you to imagine a voice, slowly getting louder, saying 'Incommmmmmming!'

The Australian GP was where Red Bulls luck seemed to end. Due to mechanical error, Verstappen retired on lap 4. Instead, the winner was Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who had been the only non-Red Bull winner in 2023. Verstappen won many of the next races, however his victories were regularly interrupted by other driver wins, and their stories. I said it was a season for dreamers right? Let me tell you why.

The first dream that was achieved was by Mclaren's Lando Norris. A driver for the team since 2019, Norris won the Miami GP, his first ever. After 5 years in F1, this was a sweetly anticipated victory for Norris and Mclaren. He would go on to win in Zandervoort (Verstappen's home GP) and Singapore, making him the closest to Verstappen in the championship fight. A shock considering Mclaren's form in recent years, however they are seen as the best car this year.

We also saw George Russell and Lewis Hamilton get Mercedes' first wins in years. Russell won in Austria (his second win ever), and Hamilton won his home race in Silverstone. Many considered this win to be the return of a champion, as Hamilton had not won a race in some time by this point. It was a rather poetic win, considering it is his last year with Mercedes, the team who he won 6 championships with.

Oscar Piastri was another first time winner that left his mark, winning first in Hungary after controversial team orders, and then in Baku with a master class race. It is only his second year in F1 and he is quickly showing himself to be highly competitive.

Perhaps the biggest wins were for Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Born and raised in Monaco, Leclerc was one of the few Monagasque drivers in F1 history. So when he won his home GP, the famous Monaco GP, there were tears in many eyes. He was the first hometown winner in Monaco in over 90 years. He then went on to win Ferrari's home race in Monza as well. A storybook year of home race wins for Leclerc.

All in all, it has been 7 races since Max Verstappen won, and his lead is slowly being chipped away at. Mclaren, in fact, has surpassed Red Bull in the WCC, often attributed to Sergio Perez's weak performance throughout the year. Many wonder how a titan like Verstappen could fall, but people always forget that every team has their moments where they fail and where they succeed.

Other than race wins, it has been an interesting year in terms of lineup. So far there has been two mid-season driver swaps (Williams' Logan Sargent replaced by Franco Colapinto and VCARB’s Daniel Riccardo replaced by Liam Lawson), news of driver changes for next year, (Hamilton to Ferrari, Sainz to Williams, Nico Hulkenberg to Sauber, Esteban Ocon to Haas), the knowledge that we will lose a few drivers next year (Haas' Kevin Magnussen, Sauber's Zhou Guanyu and Valterri Bottas, etc.), and announcements of multiple rookies joining the grid in 2025.

Thats everything so far. Very surprised I got through that all, but I did keep it pretty surface level. It anyone wants me to take a deeper dive into certain years please let me know, I would be very willing.

who is your favourite driver?: 2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX WINNER LANDO NORRIS!!!!!!!!!! I've loved and followed him since his first fp1 as a test driver for Mclaren in 2018 and i've been DOWN FOR HIM EVER SINCE!!!!! 👑

Lewis also holds a very special place in my heart though 🫶 i've been a fan of F1 since i was 6 years old in 2007, and the first ever race i fully watched on telly was the canadian GP of that year - where he won for the first time. so i'll always be a Lewis fan deep down too

do you have any other favourite drivers?: Oscar Piastri is my no.2, i adore that man with every fibre of my being 🧡

do you pull for drivers or do you like teams as well?: driver's mostly, just so happens that my two faves (Lando + Oscar) drive for Mclaren, which has been my favourite team since 2007.

the drivers matter more to me, but i will say that my love for Lewis made me a Mercedes fan for a long time.

how long have you been into f1?: it's consumed my life for eighteen years now, but i've only recently begun to outwardly show it because @panevanbuckley became a fan so i've had someone to share it with... and now i've started i don't think i could ever stop. seriously. my friends all think i'm crazy

what got you into f1?: my dad has been a fan since he was a kid and i grew up watching him watch races, until i apparently had nothing to do one sunday and i watched one with him. been hooked ever since.

do you enjoy fanfic/RPF: i do. i think as long as its a) respectful, b) not unconsensually shared with the people involved, or c) misrepresented as anything other than fiction then there's no issue with it.

that being said if a driver came out and said they had a problem with it, i wouldn't consume anything they wouldn't want out there if that makes sense.

how do you view new fans?: as long as they're respectful and not causing problems i encourage and welcome every new fan to the sport - whether its through media, DTS or anything else.

if you could take over as team principal for any team, who would it be and why?: williams. i want to see them do well so much like they used to. plus i'd shut the logan replacement rumours down straight away. 😤

are your friends and family into f1 as well?: the only one who comes close to my level of love for F1 is @panevanbuckley

but i'm slowly trying to get another friend of mine into it just as much, she makes us f1 themed bracelets 🥹

At the Invitation of Rimowa, Lewis Hamilton Makes A Pit Stop With ELLE

One of the most influential drivers in Formula 1 and protagonist of Rimowa's new campaign, Lewis Hamilton talks about traveling the world, his motivation after seven world titles, and his passion for fashion.

Lewis Hamilton started traveling at the age of thirteen because of motorsport. At 22 he joined Formula 1, which meant visiting around twenty countries for nine months, each year of the championship, and he has contested eighteen seasons so far. "Getting to know different places, and especially different cultures, really helped expand my mind and my understanding of the world," says the pilot. Naturally, then, the Englishman is one of the protagonists of the new campaign by Rimowa, a German brand that is a reference in luxury luggage. Named Never Still (or "always on the move"), it brings together personalities who have travel as the engine of their personal journey and evolution. And Hamilton never stopped surpassing himself. Born into a working-class English family, he has won seven world titles, a feat he shares only with Michael Schumacher. He also has the highest number of victories, pole positions and podiums in the most important category in world motorsport. After 945 days without a win, he took the top spot on his home podium at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last month in one of the most thrilling achievements of his career. "There were times when I thought this would never happen again. (…) I had never cried when crossing the finish line," he said in the interview after the race. "That's what happens when you keep going. We stand up," he wrote on his Instagram profile, thanking his team, Mercedes. In the following race in Hungary he achieved the 200th podium of his career. After twelve years at the German team, the Englishman will start racing for Ferrari in 2025, in one of the most talked about moves in the sport in recent times.

The first (and still only) black driver in F1, he became a voice against racism and in defense of diversity in the sport, taking a firm stand in the midst of Black Lives Matter. Hamilton was not afraid to contrast the homogeneous look of his circuit colleagues, with his dreadlocks, tattoos and jewelry. His passion for fashion is clear-he has walked the Met Gala red carpet a few times, collaborates with major brands, is a constant presence in the front rows-and his willingness to dare. The driver shows a lot of his choices behind the scenes on the circuit, reinforcing his connection with fashion under the spotlight of F1. "I don't always get it right, but I think it's a matter of personal expression," he says. The Englishman also expressed several times his admiration for Ayrton Senna, who he chose as an idol when he was still a child. In 2022 Hamilton gained the title of honorary Brazilian citizen, and at the beginning of this year he went to Bahia to spend his rare days of dolce far niente. Away from the track he opened his own film production company, with which he is preparing a feature film about F1 with Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, in which he will also act. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), the production had scenes filmed at the British Grand Prix last year. At a pit stop in Seoul, where he posed for the photos that accompany this article, the driver spoke about his connection with Brazil, his admiration for Senna, travel, and fashion.

You will turn forty in 2025. What has age brought you? How different do you see yourself, compared to your twenties and thirties? "Deep down I'm still the boy I always was, but much more sure of myself, of what I want and where I want to go. I'm more comfortable with myself, in my own skin, enjoying my creativity, whether in music (Hamilton composes), or in fashion and sport. This brings me a lot of joy. At twenty everyone is a little lost, trying to figure out what they are and what to do. I feel like I have a north star. I think the forties will be the best. I will make them the best."

You've won seven world titles, broken a series of records, founded your own charity organization, and star in Rimowa's campaign. What motivates you? What are you looking for in the coming years? "You need to remember that life is short, to be present and find a balance between work and family. I am extremely motivated and I want to use the time I have here well. One of the things I'm most proud of is Mission 44 (an institution founded by the pilot with a focus on creating a more inclusive future for young people) and the work we are doing. Last year in São Paulo I managed to take sixty children from the city to the Autódromo de Interlagos, showing them the circuit, the pits and everything. I spent some time with them, who had ideas on how to solve some of the problems they face in Brazilian education and society. These are things I want to continue developing. I want to find out how I can use this initiative to impact people, especially children, who are the future. We need to encourage and create platforms for the next generation; the new innovators, the new designers, the new artists."

You've spent much of the last few years traveling the world. How did this influence you as a human being and as a pilot? "I started traveling when I was thirteen years old. I'm very lucky to be able to see the world. It's very different when you start traveling at a young age. Everything is the first time; the first time in Brazil, the first time in Italy. This news is so special. It's sad that you don't have the first time again, because it's very difficult to have the same feeling. Getting to know different places and especially different cultures really helped expand my mind and my understanding of the world, how vast it is and how different people interact. At the same time, we are all human beings and have a lot in common. I feel like it helped me understand humanity better, to have compassion, and I think you can be a better person when you have that understanding, unlike being in one city or country for many years."

What's never missing from your suitcase? "Face mask, a book or two, my laptop and headphones. These are the things I can't travel without."

You always seem very comfortable in Brazil. What attracts you to the country? "The thing I love most about Brazil is the people, the energy. When I was younger, growing up in England, it was the colors-the green and yellow of football shirts-that attracted me. I watched many Brazilian team games. And, of course, there was Senna. When I saw advertisements and documentaries about him, I could hear Brazilian music and drums in the background. I saw Carnival and how people celebrated. Every time I met Brazilians in England, they said, "I love it, I love the country." I don't think I've ever met anyone of another nationality who was so passionate about their country. So when I finally went to Brazil, I felt the energy. It's a very diverse country, which I love. I feel at home."

You are an honorary Brazilian citizen. "Yes. I need to learn Portuguese. [laughs]"

Your admiration for Senna is well known. Among so many F1 idols, how did your connection with the Brazilian come about? You were only nine years old when he died. "I started watching races when I spent the weekends with my father. I remember starting to watch them when I was around four years old. I was a very active boy and getting me to sit down was not easy, but for some reason I stopped with him for the grand prix. Ayrton's toy car models were what I wanted for Christmas. When I watched his videos, I felt like I understood the things he represented, how honest he was. I wanted to drive his way. I felt a connection. I remember I was racing (in a kart) the day he died and my father came to deliver the news. It knocked me down. At nine years old I had not yet had this experience. I remember crying for weeks. It was difficult and strange because I didn't know him, he wasn't from my country, but he meant so much to me. Over these years, I learned to love the person he was."

You really like fashion; you have a defined style. How would you describe it and what do you enjoy using it most? "I would say it is urban chic, quite sophisticated. I like taking risks. I love fashion, and when you enter this world you see how diverse and creative it is. I love being in that space, because I absorb a lot of inspiration. In everyday life, I love being comfortable. For example, I flew here in this sweater. Right now I'm creating amazing tailoring, something similar to suits but more comfortable than regular suits. I'm constantly learning from people and the fashion world. I don't always get it right, but I think it's a matter of personal expression."

Ferrari: kind of exactly where i expected. carlos crushed it, amazing job from him although not as good as his previous result in australia, what do you expect from a man without an appendix and a job- podium every time he’s raced. Bad quali from charles although he very much made it up in the race very well deserved driver of the day great finish from both nothing better to be done really.

Mercedes: guys please come on you can do better than this. george had a terrible quali then came back and did probably some of the best racing on the track and i’m not even glazing it especially with that battle with piastri. hamilton shockingly out qualifying george which was a little bit sad cause i thought george could do a sweep of the season tbh but good race overall i suppose. not amazing finish but come on you’re in like the 5th best car what do you expect.

Mclaren: solid. not much to say. piastri not his best race, suzuka doesn’t seem to be a good track for him so i expected it. norris pretty solid finish amazing qualifying deserves tons of credit for that. couldn’t hang onto third but hey it’s a mclaren not a red bull.

Aston: Fernando i love you so much you are an amazing king who may or may not be the greatest to ever touch the sport i hope the Taylor Swift dating rumours are true because you deserve that much credit. Lance Stroll i think is scum of the earth who is somehow fighting in formula b even though he’s in like the 4/5th best car on track. absolutely unacceptable to lose positions to tsunoda and hulkenberg in that car.

Minardi: idk what Ricciardo has been doing lately but i hope it’s just one realllyyy long april fools prank because what is this. the crash was kinda his fault tbh. very very sad and i hoped he could turn it around since he got a very good quali result. Yuki tsunoda absolutely crushed it and gets my second 10/10 for his home race. overtakes were insane. so so happy to see you thriving and getting points.

Haas: kind of a quiet race. no points for either so not much to say, both drives are 6/10s for me.

Williams: Absolutely terrible. Excited to see if they will even have a car by the end of the season from the progress they are making. Albon out immediately Sargeant not managing anything good. Hope they can turn this around soon because my fantasy team is suffering hard. Although sargeant very good turn around in the dirt have to compliment that.

Steak F1 Team: The amount of times this season i have been CONVINCED of the points possibilities only for them to be taken away by the kindergarten class that is their pit crew is insane. this really should not be tolerated at all. feel very bad for zhou as it was an unfair way to end.

Alpine: I mean there were some parts of the race where the cars didn’t even look like they were moving.

focusing on NHDD!Justin's first life in this one. Mostly experimental because this AU was originally meant to be a character study on the making of a villain [...which got derailed almost immediately], only slightly touching on the vague echoes of his first life. But since my brain hates me, here, have one of the most out-there-probably-not-canon things for this AU yet. Also, for anyone lost about what's going on: a while ago, I did a what-if-this-canon-event-happened-in-NHDD thought exercise. To sum up: because Justin's a) technically reincarnated and b) originally from another dimension entirely, the Soul Stone basically went "you. I like you. you know what, since you have two lives, give me the one you don't even really remember and we'll be even". Which is what ended up happening in the original ending. However... what if Justin had made a different choice?

Just like in that thought exercise, heads up for some pretty heavy themes— this time revolving around the aftermath of implied Major Character Death [which, in this alternate ending, is the result of Justin choosing to sacrifice his second life instead of his first], and different types of dysfunctional families.

Sometimes, it felt like nothing more than a dream. An oddly long, overly detailed and sometimes confusing fever dream, sure, but the point was, Mercedes Garcia woke up.

Everyone said it was a miracle she'd survived the accident, but Mercedes couldn't shake the strange flash of orange and 'so you've decided, little outsider?' that was the last thing she remembered before she opened her eyes.

It sounded fantastical, the sort of thing that happened in movies— but then, Justin Hammer's entire life seemed to have been a strange mix of Gossip Girl and comic books.

But this was the real world, where Mercedes had missed her own graduation, and now had her own astronomical hospital bills on top of rent and student loans to worry about. Not to mention her incredibly freaked out parents, who hadn't been exactly happy about her choice of college to begin with, and were now even more freaked out over the fact that she'd be moving to the on the other side of the state for it.

As if it were any different to how it'd been before the accident, when she'd been lucky to see her both parents for more than three hours a week between school, her part-time job, and helping care for Abel. The cynical part of her that she hadn't thought even existed before the accident muttered darkly about free babysitters, but she knew they cared about her. Even if they'd never really had the opportunity to show it, not when her baby brother needed everything they could give— but she had never doubted they cared about her.

It's just... Mercedes needed the distance. Like, sure, she could've gone with community college and taken things from there— but even since before the accident she'd been itching to get out. Sure, tiny shoebox apartment to tiny shoebox dorm wasn't much of a difference, but at least she got the chance to be normal for the first time since Abel had been diagnosed.

So she went to college, like almost everyone her age, and called home during the weekends, and let herself fall into the rhythm of classes and finding another part-time job and trying not to think too hard about the occasional flashes of deja vu she'd been having the entire time.

College was much easier than high school had been, and Mercedes wasn't sure how much of it was practice being on her own versus the lingering remnants of that weird dream. It made her head hurt if she tried to think about it too much— because if it hadn't just been a coma dream, then what was it?

And if she cracked open Pandora's Box, the questions would never stop. About why it'd been much easier to interact with her classmates now than back in high school, or why economics felt so intuitive. The specifics of some of the study habits she'd picked up seemingly overnight, why her patience seemed to have dried up since the accident, or, hell, how a girl who'd only ever shopped at thrift stores was able to blend in with the trust fund kids on campus. Why it'd suddenly become so easy to say no, after a lifetime of bending over backwards saying yes.

So Mercedes tried not to dwell on it. She took things one day at a time, a week at a time, called her family, and tried not to be exasperated when her roommate moved out partway through the year to live with her boyfriend.

And then things started to get really weird.

The first time it happened, she was at work. A tall, heavily muscled and tattooed man wandered into the cafe constantly checking his phone. Which shouldn't have been anything out of the usual, but he also kept looking around. A lot. She'd assumed he had planned on meeting someone, but his increased desperation as the cafe entered its rush hour told her he'd been stood up. Before she could ask if he needed help, however, he swept away without a backwards glance.

The second time, Mercedes had finished her last class of the day. A very tall cosplayer with an eye-catching leather jacket swept into the biggest lecture hall on campus just as she was heading out, and she had to swerve to avoid bumping into him because he refused to look away from his phone. Which, rude, but he was probably a new transfer for the computer science class that was scheduled to start in a few minutes so she didn't think much of it.

Not long after that, she saw a stranger during her usual grocery run. Which normally wasn't very notable, but he had the most memorable prosthetic she'd ever seen, and stared at her when she asked if he needed help. In her defense, he'd looked lost and one of her first jobs had been restocking shelves, so it really was just habit to ask!

"No, I'm...looking for someone." He finally answered with a slightly raspy voice, and she gave him a polite smile.

"Oh. Good luck, then." She said lamely, and speed-walked to the nearest self-checkout because the sooner she could forget about the embarrassment of her customer service autopilot kicking in, the better. Abel would never, ever let her live it down if he got wind of it.

The last time... was when Mercedes wondered if the stress of finals week had maybe gotten to her after all, because hallucinating portals in her bedroom was new. And that was before multiple people tumbled out of it, ruining her freshly-washed sheets in the process.

aaaand you can see where I ran out of steam for this.

tl;dr: Cabal, upon discovering Justin chose to sacrifice his life to obtain the Soul Stone, collectively went "fuck that, we're getting him back" and promptly set to tracking down where his soul went off to. Are they confused as to why all the sensors/Soul Stone keeps pointing them to some random universe where there's no magic or superheroes or aliens? Yes, but that's not about to stop them. [You decide if they chose to save their world before tracking Justin down, or if they ditched their universe entirely because what was the point of saving it if it didn't have Justin in it?]

There's going to be a lot of confusion at first, as Mercedes Garcia is most definitely not Justin Hammer, but I figure Cabal'd cotton on pretty quick as to what happened. And then, things get pretty dicey because there's multiple emotional bombshells to navigate, some less fun than others.

Some ideas for how it'd go from here:

Option 1: Cabal in Mercedes' World

Very introspective, with multiple emotional bombshells going on back-to-back, basically:

The "you're not our friend" realization, wherein Cabal looks at the twenty-something college student who apparently has their friend's soul but looks at them with no recognition whatsoever. This is the point where most people would leave her alone, but... we're talking about a hyperaggressive and overpowered friend group with dubious morals. So, for the sake of this thought exercise, Cabal ends up [re-]befriending Mercedes. Which leads to:

The "you're not the person who was the heart and soul of our group [but oh god I can definitely see the resemblance]" bombshell, feat. Cabal discovering just how much of tire fire Justin Hammer's mental state was, specifically because Mercedes is visibly much, much happier than he ever was. Which, as it turns out, is a very low bar, as Mercedes is a hot mess who spent the vast majority of her short life going "can't complain, my family is going through a Very Hard Time right now without me making it worse. but really, I'm Fine :)" but she definitely loves said family, and she's so optimistic it's painful to watch.

Sure, some of it could be chalked up to the fact that she's much younger than the Justin they knew, but... still that habit of always trying to help people. Of being an older sibling, a chronic mom friend, and always asking if they're hungry and offering what little a broke college student can afford.

Interspersed in this is the "you chose to abandon us/did we ever really know you?" emotional SNAFU, because there's bound to be grief and resentment over the fact that, well, a dear friend chose death over sacrificing a past life who, tbh, nobody in Cabal would've really missed in the long run. Like, by this point they know Justin was a reincarnated soul, but 1) they found this out via the Soul Stone going "hey idk what to tell you, they're the one who chose this life over the other one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ don't take it up with me", and 2) this means that, on some level, Justin chose an honestly not-great life over his friends.

On a funnier note: the "...so, now what?" moment, because, well, Cabal is not about to lose their friend again.

And here's where things get entertaining in a hurry because at some point, they're going to suggest everyone moving in together. Hey, it's practically tradition by now, Justin was the one who started it with all his safehouses! Besides, it's only logical to share space with someone you trust, more efficient and cost-effective. Only, well, Mercedes' parents are going to [understandably] freak out over the idea of their twenty-something daughter moving in with four rich men who showed up out of nowhere and are apparently asking to have her live with them rent-free. That all of said guys seem to be like twice her age does not help, and all of them are Very Very Dangerous. Ivan especially looks like a parent's worst nightmare, but none of them are the type of guy you'd want to meet in a dark alley, so...

Slightly Fun Moment Two: Tony Stark shows up sometime during this mess. Cue fireworks.

Option 2: The 'It Was All Inside Your Head' Ending

Wherein it turns out that Mercedes' life after waking up was a Soul Stone-induced dream, because it wanted Justin to know, acutely, what exactly they're giving up if they were to pick their first life. Only, Cabal barges into Justin's dreamscape to tell him he's in a coma, please wake up, and now he has to choose which life to return to.

It would be a hard choice, because with Mercedes' memories so fresh in his mind, there's honestly not much going for Justin Hammer's life other than Cabal and Tony. There's no amount of money that could possibly make up for losing the family who cared about her, for instance, and the constant threat of alien invasions and whatnot isn't exactly a selling point. On the other hand, Justin's imposter syndrome is on a scale comparable only to Tony's genius, so... not a fun conversation for anyone involved.

Let's be real here. ⭐ big brands sponsors : Petronas, IWC Schaffhausen, SAP, HPE, and more are gained through MB's connection with the companies. There are certain parts where an individual plays its part but it's not the key. Sponsors are not like fans. You cannot downplay the concept of sponsors to just "oh they're here for a certain individual" (I don't hate but this goes for everyone including George Russell). Why am I saying that? Because sponsors are putting stakes in said company, they are putting money in the company. That money is an investment and they are not just 1 dollar or 10 dollars. It involves MILLIONS of dollars. Tenths. Hundreds. These sponsors are not babies, they know the company they're going to invest in and they won't just be there just because "someone's popular! let's sponsor it". If you're a 'marketing person' and you have this mindset, go back to marketing class and don't forget to take PR classes as well.

I do not deny the fact that most of Mercedes' fanbase are made up of one type of fan but to suggest that the company does not have a brand loyalty or simply that their value will drop by the end of someone leaving is simply ridiculous. If we're talking about a fraud paper company, yes. But we're talking here about Mercedes. MERCEDES. Their brand value, brand loyalty will not fall or suffer as hard as these people exaggerate. It is ridiculous.

About the "they are pushing more of George Russell", Lewis Hamilton got involved in Mercedes AMG campaigns as well ever since he announced his departure (AMG launch in China, AMG uncovered, Concept car release in Monaco) and more main sponsors promotional content (SAP, Puma, Tommy Hilfiger, IWC Schaffhausen). We all know Lewis doesn't do the type of tiktok contents George do but that doesn't mean he is sidelined. He does his own portion of PR work that is suited to what he usually does and what he likes to do. Saying that "Mercedes did blah blah so fans can like George more" is stupid. A) A driver is leaving in 2025, why wouldn't they push their other driver more?
