"NICE" JEWISH GIRLS
Writing with an assured knowledge of her subjects (who are all European or American) and the belief that “social justice is coded into our DNA,” Merberg profiles 36 historical and contemporary women of Judaic descent who fought for a better world and defied the odds. Each entry is 12 to 15 paragraphs long and framed around the biographee’s “very Jewish” personal characteristics—particularly intrepidity and a strong social conscience—and societal impact. The women’s family ties, genetic connections, and degrees of religious observance are also described, as are their struggles with assimilation and antisemitism. The first section looks at social activists such as women’s rights pioneer Betty Friedan and Alicia Garza, founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. Next come glimpses into the lives of entertainers, including actress Hedy Lamarr and comedian Tiffany Haddish, who celebrated her bat mitzvah on her 40th birthday. A third section covers writers such as Emma Lazarus, Judy Blume, and more. Anna Freud and Janet Yellen are among the four scientists profiled. Entrepreneurs range from cosmetics mogul Estée Lauder to the Wojcickis of Google and YouTube fame. Another section turns the spotlight on leaders the likes of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and civil rights activist Bella Abzug. The closing section is devoted to two Supreme Court justices: Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan. Rucker’s stylized digital illustrations leave some areas uncolored or use color mapping for an interesting non finito effect.

2019 Gift Guide: Kids
Shopping for kids has never been more fun, whether you’re looking for toys, clothes, or furniture. Although we’ve included gift options for the tiny artist and budding architect in your life in this round-up, we’ve also included gifts for parents, too! So whether you’re shopping for a kid or shopping for a someone who has/is expecting one, here are some of our favorite kid-friendly buys.
LALO Daily Stroller \\\ $715 New York-based industrial design studio Visibility has designed some of the coolest products we’ve seen (see here and here) and their latest design is the LALO Daily Stroller, an all-inclusive stroller that has everything you need at no extra cost, including: newborn bassinet, toddler seat, adaptors to popular carseats, stroller hooks, all-weather cover, seat liners, and even a parent organizer with a cell phone charger. Available in five different colors, the Daily is a dream ride for both kids and parents.
Raduga Grez Apartment Building Blocks \\\ $160 The motto for Raduga Grez is “toys as art,” and it couldn’t be more true. The Russian family-run company hand makes every single piece of wooden blocks, vegetable and fruit sets, stackers, and more (you can watch their IG Stories for a behind-the-scenes look at their production). They are routinely sold out so you’ll have to stalk their stockist list to find them sometimes. Because they’re tactile, open-ended toys that constantly “evolve” during playtime, we bet they’ll be reached for often over your plastic light-up toys.
Baby’s First Eames by Julie Merberg and illustrated by Aki \\\ $12 From Art Deco to Zaha Hadid, teach them young with this book that exposes kids to architecture and modern design in rhymes! A educational board book that covers everyone from Alexander Calder to Isamu Noguchi and everything from Tulip chairs to Poulsen pendants, it’s a fun way to share your passion with your little one.
Moon Picnic Weather Station \\\ $54 Teach your little meteorologist to learn about, observe, and report the weather with this interactive toy that features dials, meters, and sliders. It’s safely made with non-toxic paint and sustainable wood so you can feel good about gifting this, too.
Primary \\\ various prices, starting at $8 For cute and durable clothes in a rainbow of primary colors, Primary makes great basics in every type of garment kids need, from footie sleepers and bodysuits to jackets and mittens. The price point is great too since kids seem to constantly outgrow their clothes!
North of West \\\ various prices, starting at $14 If you’re looking for more toned down clothes, we love North of West children’s clothing line for their fun patterns and subdued hues. They’re handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, so you’ll also be supporting small businesses – a win-win for everyone!
Little Bot Baby Play Mat \\\ $150 Minimalist, neutral design, durable, non-toxic, cushy, easy to clean – what else could you ask for in a baby mat? These mats are much more cushier than most foam options available, so don’t be surprised if you yourself end up taking a quick snooze during playtime! The play mat is available in three neutral versions and come double-sided for when you want to quickly change up the look of the playroom.
The Nugget \\\ $230 You might think this is just a cushion for sitting but it’s so, so much more than that! For kids, the Nugget is for fort-making, sliding, climbing, hiding – basically endless imaginative play! For parents, it makes a great cushion for overnight guests because, fun fact!, it was originally designed in college by one of the co-founders to be a simple, easy-to-move futon. From playtime to nap time, the Nugget will be your most-used furniture for its simple and comfortable design.
Amanda Jane Jones x Winter Water Factory \\\ various prices, starting at $10 Amanda Jane Jones and Cree Jones authored Yum Yummy Yuck, a bright and light-hearted board book that teaches kids what they should and shouldn’t put in their mouths (boogers, no no; ice cream, yes yes). Winter Water Factory collaborated with the Joneses to create a collection of cool, adorable clothes to be worn during story time and afterwards. We particularly love this booger tote…
Miku Smart Baby Monitor \\\ $400 This gift is primarily for the parents and an important gift at that. Winner of the Baby-sit Best of Babytech at CES 2019, this baby monitor uses proprietary sensors that don’t require wires or wearables in order to track your baby’s vitals and nursery conditions in real time. Besides the military grade engineering to monitor breathing and sleeping patterns, mobile device compatibility, and data-secure technology, another great feature is that the Miku works at all times, even if you lose Wifi connection! You won’t need to have both a Wifi and Wifi-free device in order to be rest assured that your little one is okay throughout the day and night.
Gathre Mats \\\ various prices, starting from $22 Whether they’re used for changing, playing, or eating, Gathre makes durable mats in an array of tonal colors that can be used anywhere and everywhere. The Utah-based company also makes yoga mats, tablecloths, and bibs in leather and a double-sided vegan alternative.
Oioiooi Alphabet Play Block Set \\\ $180 at Design Life Kids Korean design studio Oioiooi created a beautiful alphabet play block set to help promote creative learning. Each letter has corresponding shapes for kids to find and match as they learn the alphabet. Whether for decoration, story-telling, or learning, these blocks are easily heirloom toys with their timeless beech and walnut wood design.
Lovevery Subscription \\\\ various prices, starting at $36/month Lovevery’s play kit subscriptions are so convenient for families who want to give their kids age- and milestone-appropriate toys. The toys are backed by developmental research which you can learn about with each kit as they come with guides to teach you how to foster educational playtime. Not only do they expose kids to STEM (science, technology, and mathematics) concepts, they’re designed in bright, enticing colors that you won’t mind leaving out in your home.
Botanicool Color Stix Crayons \\\ $19 We wish we had crayons this cool when we were growing up. Hand-cut and hand-poured into color-blocked rectangles, these crayons are perfect for the mini artist in your life.
Rafa Kids XL Shelf \\\ approximately $405 For a piece of furniture that will continue to be used long after daily story time, the Rafa Kids shelf features a minimal design using 100% Finnish Birch plywood and powder coated metal. Although the shelves range from small to extra large, we especially love the warmth of this limited edition, all natural wood version.

Conversations in Creative Cultures Weekly work
Conversations In creative cultures weekly work
Holiday task – notes about tikanga
- Two important words tikanga (tika and pono)
- Tika means right or correct
- Pono means true or genuine
- Tuturu means fixed, permanent or enduring
- By considering these two things it helps to see if the practice of tikanga is ethical
- Need these things to see if it upholds the principles and values of Maori culture
Week 7
The first version
- All Chiefs give the Queen access to all of their lands
- Leaves the Maori with little power over the Europeans, no ownership
- Negatively impacts the Maori as they can be easily prejudiced and enslaved by the Europeans
- Left with little sources to generate money, growing crops etc
The second version
- The Queen agrees to protect the Chiefs lands, villages and treasures, although the Chiefs agree to reselling land to the Queen at an agreed price
- Chiefs have more authority over their land etc
- Control the money they earn by what and when they sell
The third version
- The Queen arranges to only protect the Europeans inhabiting New Zealand, not taking any concern for the Maori
- The Maori have no form of protection from the Queen therefore there may be no alliance
- This could negatively impact the two, creating a negative divide between nations
- The Maori have full control over this lands, villages and treasures; therefore, they can continue to live as they have been doing so.
Group reading – the first 12 pages
- TamateaPokaiwhenua was one of NZ most famous navigators
- Marking of the sign Uetonga is what we have come to known as Maori art form of tattooing (ta moko)
- Ta moko expresses the wearers whakapapa and tribal identity
- A visual art form or performance piece are all example of taonga work, firstly it is a creation of pre-existing body of knowledge, values and insights, secondly it is a result of effort and creativity of actual; people.
- Each piece of work has Kaitiaki, those who lineage or calling creates a need to safeguard the taonga.
- Kaitiaki relationships also exist when people have a particular relationship with a piece of work, these relationships must be protected.
- Intellectual property rights refer to a group rights which the law grants respect for specific creations of the human minds
- IP rights were first designed to reward creativity and innovation and praise the creator
- Maori use a similar principle kaitiakitanga, which creates the respect of taonga works
- Should the IP system recognise kaitiakitanga in respect of taonga works and matauranga Maori?
- Both systems share a common interest in the growth of culture and identity although there are differences between the two
- Kaitiakitanga focuses on obligations and relationships whereas IP focuses on the rights of owners
- The idea of the Copyright Act relates to the similar values of Kaitiatanga
- Taonga works have been used business as trademarks for some time, taonga works are common trademarks in NZ commerce
- Application for registration of trademark can be refused it is likely to offend a significant section of the community: including Maori
- Maori trademark advisory committee decide if a potential trademark is likely to offensive or not
- The association of taonga and food is highly offensive
- IP laws protects kaitiaki interest in Matauranga Maori and taonga works only to a limited extent
Potential ideas
- Cosmology
- Capitalism/colonisation
- Pacific histories
- Feminism – card game, memory card game, conversation starter
Week 8
Task 1
Does a consideration of gender and sexuality impact your project?
Yes as our project is based around the idea of Maori feminism. Both gender and sexuality are a huge part of feminism, particularly the sexual exploitation and objectification of the female gender. This will significantly impact our project as these two ideas will need to be considered when researching and producing our research tool.
Artists and designer who engage with Mana Wahine, feminism, Takatapu and non-dominant expressions of gender and sexuality
- Vivian Lynn, work includes the ideas of identity, repressed feminism and dominant culture
- Jacqueline Fahey, began painting feminist work after becoming interested in the voice of women in the 1960’s focusing on the domestic lives they lead
- Claudia Pony Eyeley, feminist who’s work asserts the position of women in art history
Task 2
Research your topic and find 1 academic resource
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2018/07/is-feminism-relevant-to-m-ori-women.html- News hub article and video clip
- Is the celebration New Zealand women winning the right to vote reflective of Maori women?
- Some Maori women do not support feminism as they don’t feel oppressed by the males in their lives
- Still understand that the world in ruled by patriarchy, for examples males being payed more than females
- Colonisation affected Maori women especially
- Maori women do not have a lot of control over feminist decisions and conversations as it is more focused to the pakeha women in New Zealand
- Feminism needs decolonisation, shows that mana wahine is important
http://www.wsanz.org.nz/journal/docs/WSJNZ252Simmonds11-25.pdf
Mana Wahine can be referred to as Maori feminist discourses, it is a theoretical and methodological approach that examines the connect of being Maori and female.
Research what cards already exist in the feminism field

Wonder Women, a happy families card game – based on the card game happy families although the cards are illustrated with inspiring women the aim is to see who knows the most about these women
https://www.bookdepository.com/Feminist-Flashcards-Julie-Merberg/9781941367858?redirected=true&utm_medium=Google&utm_campaign=Base5&utm_source=NZ&utm_content=Feminist-Flashcards&selectCurrency=NZD&w=AF7CAU960KS0QUA80T1V&pdg=pla-73700462259:kwd-73700462259:cmp-710646238:adg-42660986568:crv-163904097987:pid-9781941367858:dev-c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiILsBRCGARIsAHKQWLPGJ9Eqzww_ZKquI4Ct4oqxGKe62l9xVt4B6ZDTu0H-pJSY9rojNLUaAm2XEALw_wcB
Feminist Flashcards – young readers and activists can learn about famous women’s’ history and different facts, the cards can be used for a number of different uses
There are a only few feminism based card games that are currently being produced, although the majority of them are either targeted towards children or are produced and sold overseas. At the moment there are no card games that exist that are specifically based around our idea of Maori feminism/feminism in New Zealand therefore there is a gap in the market for our ‘product’.
Add to group mind map, do ethics and values need to be consider when creating your tool
Yes, often feminism cam be viewed in a very negative way thus creating a negative view for the people who support it. We will need to consider creating the game in a safe and respectful way to be sure that we are not harming Maori feminism in NZ and those who support it.
Week 9
Read one key reading (make notes) and compare the two
- Oceania is a scatter of islands, culture, methodologies
- The way we view the world (one humans’ reality could be another’s fiction).
- What is the difference between traditional and authentic culture?
- ‘Training’ our people to suit our country in order to have economic and cultural dependency
- Regain faith in our past culture and identity
- Colonialism still continues to wound, transform, humiliate our cultures
- There is no state of cultural purity as our cultures continue to grow
Develop tool
Potential questions
Who is a Mana Wahine?
Do you feel you understand Maori Feminism?
Have you ever considered or thought about feminism from a Maori standpoint?
How does the colonisation of New Zealand affect Maori feminism?
Is the celebration of women winning the vote reflective of Maori women?
Include a brief introduction of what Maori feminism is and how to play the game
Week 10
Task 1

- Framing culture identities creates a space between worlds
- The confronting question “where are you from”, identity words (how you refer to people), stereotypes

- How can stereotypes be challenged through art
- Art can show a cultures true identity, breaking stereotypes
- The more stories are told the more Asians are seen as people, this can be done through art and design
All who live on Islands
- Not understanding New Zealand’s culture, tying to fit in
- Reading helped her learn about European children her age, reading to bridge her discomfort with strangers, helped her learn how to behave, helped her accept herself
- She was judged in smaller communities for being different, the way the general public talked about her race made her feel uneasy
- She had a negative view on China due to New Zealand society
- Began judging Chinese herself
- Made other assumptions about Chinese herself – passive form of racism because of neglect and ignorance
- Visiting china herself realising how her perceptions were wrong of the country
- Realising that there are others like her in NZ
- Taking time to understand the differences between ethnic groups
Repositioning the centre

Design Is For Babies: A Q&A With Julie Merberg, Author of Baby's First Eames
Babies don't know much about design. Every time I've tried to delve into the finer points of Eliel versus Eero Saarinen with the under-one crowd, they just stare at me blankly (and occasionally drool). Thankfully, Julie Merberg has a new book coming out May 8 called Baby's First Eames (Downtown Books), and I am thrilled that finally, newborns and I will have something to talk (rather, screech and coo) about.
