never be the same again.
leah williamson x injured!reader
warnings: injury, knee injuries, angst, hurt/comfort
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’d never been a player who’d dealt with minor injuries. You never struggled with soreness, or cramps, or little niggles that kept you sidelined every once in a while. When your injuries came, they came full force, full out, full throttle. You figured that it was probably how your body worked, it all got pent up until you suffered a shattering injury.
When you were 16, it had been the complete rupture of all of your lateral ankle ligaments. When you were 19, it had been a compound fracture in your arm caused by a dutch U20’s player putting their studs through your arm. At 22 it had been a torn labrum in your hip.
You figured you were well overdue now at 25, almost 26, having been completely injury free for well over three years, you just hadn’t expected it to be so bad.
It was a normal day, or as normal as a day for you could get.
You’d woken up with sleep in your eyes and your hair splayed out everywhere, in a similar state to your girlfriend laying beside you. Your morning had been peaceful, the two of you simply co existing as you went about your usual routines, the both of you enjoying the normality of it all.
You’d driven the two of you to training, your hands creasing against the leather of the wheel as you navigated your way through North London.
Leah hummed along to whatever R&B radio station she’d tuned into for the morning, without failure she always pretended to be interested in whatever news the hosts would talk about, and without failure would forget all about it by lunch time. You entertained her interest anyways in whatever topic that she chose to trivialise for the morning ride, enjoying the way that Leah could talk so passionately about something as mundane as random news.
When you arrived at London Colney the two of you both went separate ways, Leah needing a little bit more of a intensive rehab from the physios after a game weekend. So she walked off in search of the ohysio room, whereas you headed straight towards the gym, knowing that all you needed on a normal day was a bit of a stretch out to get everything feeling activated.
Kyra and Lessi were both in the gym as you walked in, the two slightly younger players tolling out on the mats. You joined them, commenting here and there on whatever they were saying as your other teammates slowly trailed in from the physios or their cars.
Just as you were heading towards the weights, Leah walked in, her body automatically walking to find you, there was no need for the two of you to discuss spotting partners, it was a unspoken rule that the two of you always went together.
You weren’t sure if it was because of the natural competition that was created from the two of you playing opposing positions, or if it was just the competitive nature of your relationship, but Leah and you just pushed each other ten times harder. She had the guts to tell you when you needed to pusb more, when you could do better, and also when you needed to slow down. It was a balance between the two of you, of knowing how far to push the other, but also where the line was.
The two of you alternated with your sets, until you’d both worked through your programs and were ready to head out to the pitch.
You didn’t really get anxiety, but as soon as Leah and yourself walked towards the locker room, in search of your boots and training gear, you got a feeling inside of your stomach that you couldn’t shake. You’d played in champions league semi-finals, euro finals, world cup finals, and never had a single bit of anxiety, but as you fished your boots from your locker and laced them up you just couldn’t shake it.
You figured you were just coming down with something, the flu was going around, you were probably just becoming under the weather. You ignored the way that it spread across the surface of your chest, like there were sets of suction cups all over your stomach and chest.
It was probably nothing, it was most likely nothing.
You kept telling yourself that as Leah grabbed you by the shoulder and walked you out towards the field with the rest of the group, there wasn’t anything different about the day that would make you feel this way, so why should you worry about it.
Training started with normal warm ups, as it always did. The squad darting in and around polea and cones, dribbling through them, and no matter how far you dug yourself into the normality of the routine you were going through, you just couldn’t shake it.
As time went past it got more complex, your group working on shooting whilst the defenders worked off on a pitch to the side and the goalkeepers tried to keep your balls from sailing past them.
It was your bread and butter, the most basic of things you could do, yet it all felt wrong.
Somehow, it felt like you were disconnected from your own body, like you were somehow watching your life from your own perspective.
You continued on, you were probably just getting sick. It wasn’t a often occurrence for you, but when you did it was always bad.
You kept telling yourself that as you transitioned from practice drills to game scenarios. Lia was injured, and Kim was sitting out due to some hamstring soreness, which left you as the main midfielder, not a unwelcome spot but not exactly normal either. You alternated between the attacking mid and a striker/center forward, never really in the defensive side of the midfield though.
With Leah yelling at you from behind and your eyes focusing on Stina and Caitlin in front of you.
With Lotte and Steph as the opposing defence it was hard to know how and where to get to be able to slot the ball into a good position for your attackers.
It’s a lot, the feeling inside of you, everything happening around you.
You don’t normally crack under pressure, and this is probably the least pressured environment you’ve played in your whole entire life, but it feels like for the first time that you just can’t focus.
Leah’s yelling, Jonas is yelling, Stina is yelling, and even though the ball isn’t even at your feet it feels like they’re all yelling at you.
You don’t even have the ball at your feet, yet.
Yet when you push, chasing the ball that Lotte had sent at you down the wing, you twist, and rotate.
All you feel is pain, possibly the worst pain you’ve ever felt.
It feels like you’re lef has been hit by a lighting bolt, and you seriously consider that maybe it had been.
You know though, you’ve seen it happen so many times that you would be a fool to not know what this is. You’re pressed face down on the grass, unmoving, just trying to take it in.
The scent of freshly clipped grass and mud floods your senses. A hand sets itself down on your shoulder and you know your done, that this isn’t some sick dream, you are well and truly fucked.
As if your knee still radiating the worst pain you’ve ever experienced isn’t enough.
“Someone get the physios.”
You hear it yelled out about a hundred times, although none of it really gets absorbed in your brain, you’re in to much pain to think, let alone really absorb the magnitude of what that means.
“Hey mate, we’re going to turn you over okay.”
It’s Caitlin, the anxiety in her voice isn’t missed by you, your aussie teammates hands settling on your shoulders and gently, but quickly, flipping you over.
The sky is grey, and a little bit too bright.
You can’t speak, out of fear that you’ll start sobbing if you do, you don’t want to cry, even if it feels like your leg is actively being chopped off.
You keep your eyes clamped shut, unable to look at the faces of your peers that have crowded above you.
“Babe, talk to me, what’s wrong?”
You keep your mouth clamped shut, you can’t deal with Leah. She’s just gotten over her injury properly, she’s recovered, and yet here you are, in the same position she was just over a year ago.
“Everybody clear away, give her some space. For fucks sakes, somebody go find Rose or Gary.”
At the sound of your captains scottish voice, the crowd slowly started to breakaway, the sound of boots scuffing against the grass beside you slowly petering off.
You kept your eyes screwed shut, for your own safety.
You can’t move your leg, you try to wiggle your toes but even the attempt at getting your nerves to stimulate puts you in a whole other world of pain.
It’s too much pain.
So much pain.
Worse than you could have imagined.
“Babe, I need you to talk to me, what hurts?”
Leah’s voice, Leah’s slightly stressed voice.
“My knee, my fucking knee.”
The air that hits your lungs is cold as your mouth opens to reiterate what you’re going through. It forces you to breathe, to take a big deep breath and inhale.
You pull the neck of your singlet to your mouth within seconds, biting down on the material to stop any of the sounds of pain escaping.
You open your eyes, and you see the fear on Leah’s face, she knows, just as well as you know, exactly what is going on.
Just as she looks like she’s about to say more, the doctor and the physio crouch down beside you.
“Knee?”
All you did was nod your head, trying your very hardest to not start actually sobbing, even though there were tears dripping down your face.
“Alright, can you wiggle your toes for me?”
You tried your very hardest to try and move your foot, even just a centimetre, but you just couldn’t.
The doctor seemed to notice your aggravation, and shook his head.
“Alright, we’re going to get your leg stabilised and then get you onto the stretcher. We’ll assess in the locker room.”
You couldn’t do anything but keep your head on the grass, pointed at the sky, avoiding everything and anything that came into your line of sight.
You knew it was bad when they tried to push a board underneath your leg and even just that movement hurt more than anything.
You immediately cried out, the t-shirt in your mouth doing absolutely nothing to silence the pure pain that you were expressing.
Everyone around you cringed, normally, acls didn’t hurt this much after a couple of minutes, the initial pain was horrific, but it faded. For you, nothing was fading, and with every passing second it felt like you were closer to losing consciousness due to the sheer amount of agony that was coming from your leg.
The doctors tried to be as quick about it as they could, but it didn’t stop you from screaming as they slid the board completely under your leg and strapped different parts of your leg to the board to keep it still.
You wished you were dead.
Whatever this was, you would rather be dead.
“Alright, we’re going to get you onto the stretcher now, keep going with the deep breaths, we’ll find you some pain relief once we’re inside.”
You nodded your head, you just needed it to be over.
You felt a few people grab different parts of your body, lifting you up before gently setting you down inside of the orange plastic.
They left your knee last, at least three people working to try and lift it into the stretcher, it all hurt though.
You screamed, and you screamed, and you screamed again.
You wouldn’t be surprised if the bloody king could hear you considering how loud you were.
You kept repeating the same word.
Stop.
Stop.
Stop.
Stop.
You just needed it all to stop.
Please, lord, let it all stop.
When you were still in the stretcher, they began to lift you up, six different people taking hold of the stretcher and beginning to walk you back inside.
You couldn’t take your eyes off of Leah, who looked so horrified and mortified that it almost hurt as much as the pain in your knee.
“Lee, make it stop, please, make it stop.”
The pain wasn’t fading, it was everywhere, all over, covering every inch of your body.
“Baby, just take some deep breaths, it’s going to be okay, everything’s going to be alright.”
Even Leah didn’t seem like she believed her own words, she was trying her hardest but you could tell that even she was so unsure about what was happening.
“Leah, please, make it stop.”
Leah looked like she was lost, like she had sbolutely no idea what to do.
“I will baby, I promise, we’re almost inside.”
You shook your head, god you had no words for what this was.
The tears just kept flowing, your vision being clouded by the salty drops that had nowhere to go besides pooling in your eyes.
You were done, whatever this was, you were done, there was no coming back from this.
You closed your eyes again, trying to sink into your own head, trying to make it all disappear.
It worked for a few seconds, before you were jolted in the stretcher as you were brought inside, the pain resettling across your body.
You get placed on top of one of the physio beds, Leah and Kim helping to lift you out of the stretcher and onto the bed, even as you cried and thrashed, begging for it to stop.
For the first time, you got a proper look at your knee, and from the second you laid eyes on it you knee it was bad, your whole knee was swollen up like a balloon and there was a bump just below your knee cap, where all the pain was coming from.
The doctor got to work quickly, sending everybody else out of the room besides the physios as he began to remove your leg from the board and access it.
Somewhere along the way, one of the physios found a green whistle, shoving it into your hands and allowing you to have a smidge of relief as your leg was poked and prodded.
For the most part, it was silent, no noise besides the sound of your tears dripping down your face and the doctor typing up his reports onto his laptop after every test he conducted.
They left your knee on the table, your right lower extremity looking deflated as the doctor turned to finish typing up whatever report he was making.
“I can bring your girlfriend back in, if you’d like?”
You turned to the physio, rose, who looked as deflated as you knee did.
You weren’t really sure if you were ready to face Leah.
“Yes, please.”
Rose nodded and smiled, turning around to walk towards the door, opening it up and allowing Leah to walk in.
She stayed silent, walking over to take the seat beside you, her hand immediately finding yours.
She squeezed, and for a second you thought that maybe it was going to be fine, but then that second passed.
The doctor turned around to face both of you and you just knew, you knew that he was about to ruin your life.
“I’ve just called the surgeon, we’re going to need to get you in for scans and surgery tomorrow. You’ve ruptured your patellar tendon and it looks like you’ve also ruptured your meniscus and acl, I’m sorry.”
All of the oxygen in your lungs had been sucked out, you couldn’t say anything, you couldn’t speak.
You were done, tearing an acl was bad, tearing a meniscus was bad, tearing your patellar tendon was horrible.
Doing them all together, it was pretty much unheard of.
“It’s not a confirmed diagnosis, we’ll need scans but your at risk of dislocating your knee or worse if your patellar is torn, so we need to be urgent about this. How does scans at 8am tomorrow sound, and if it comes back torn then surgery around 12?”
God, this was so much worse than you could have ever imagined.
“Sounds good, thank you doctor.”
Leah’s voice said what it needed, a silent dismissal that you both needed your time.
The doctor smiled and nodded at Leah, before taking his leave, leaving just Leah and you sitting in the room by yourselves.
Bubba, it’s going to be okay, we’ll figure this out.”
Your career was over, short lived and over.
“Leah, get out.”
You needed a minute, you needed your brain to kick into gear so you could begin to understand this.
“Babe, I did it, Beth did it, Viv did it, Laura did it, you’re going to be fine, we’re going to be fine.”
You shook your head.
“Leah, get the fuck out.”
Your voice was croaky, but you managed to get it to the level of a yell.
Leah’s hand slid out from your own.
“I’m sorry babe, I’m sorry about this, I’m so sorry.”
You shook your head.
“Leah, get out.”
She looked like she was at a mental crossroads, trying to figure out whether she should leave or not, ultimately she made rhe decision to nod her head, walking towards the door, stopping when her hand connected with the handle of the doorknob to send a sad smile your way.
“I’m going to go get our stuff together, I’ll be back in a couple of minutes.”
A couple of minutes, that should be enough, right?
The door closed behind Leah and you felt a whole different weight set itself down on your chest.
What were you supposed to do?
Your leg, your knee, was literally folding in on you, everything was over.
You were a starter, a co-captain, for both national and club teams, you weren’t the best, but you were up there, you were one of the best attacking midfielders in the world, and yet now, you were nothing.
You didn’t have anything besides football, football was your life, you’d given up everything for football, yet now, it felt like it was being pulled out from underneath you.
You didn’t know how you were going to survive this.
7 months later
You were being stupid.
You’d been told from the very minute you’d gone into recovery that you weren’t going to play again, simply, your knee wouldn’t ever be able to handle that kind of pressure again.
You didn’t think that you could prove your doctors wrong, but that didn’t mean that you didn’t want to try, you had nothing else to lose.
Leah hadn’t wanted to be an accomplice in your plan, in fact, she’d been quite the opposite, yelling at you as soon as you’d brought the idea up.
You’d lost a lot during your rehab, everything had changed, what you hadn’t lost though, was your ability to manipulate those blue eyes into doing whatever you wanted.
That’s how Leah and yourself had ended up here, the two of you standing on the grass of a local pitch, a ball at your feet.
For the first few months, you’d refused completely to go anywhere near a ball, knowing that football had done this to you.
As the seasons changed though and your life slowly started to come into perspective you changed, your body changed, everything around you changed.
Your life was different, but it wasn’t over. You still had things, you still had something to live for.
Leah looked about as unamused as you thought, you’d dragged her out of the house for your usual evening walk, funnily enough she didn’t even realise the change in route until you found yourselves out the front of the park.
It hadn’t taken a lot of convincing, or less than you’d thought.
You’d been shooting on your own for a couple of weeks, short range, no movement besides the motion. You’d started jogging a month ago, which was about as good as your recovery was going to get.
“C’mon, defend me properly.”
Leah looked at unease, the Euro’s were due to start in a couple of weeks and your fiance was ready to lead the reigning champs to hopefully another win, hopefully.
Leah took a step towards you, still keeping a few feet distance.
“I’m defending you, can you just take a shot so we can leave?”
Leah had been patient, a lot more patient then you’d been during her rehab, she’d dealt with all your dramatics, all the shit you’d put her through.
“Leah, c’mon, defend me properly, I’m not going to collapse.”
Leah looked at you like you were stupid.
She did take a step closer though, her toe pushing the ball towards yours.
“Put a ball past me, put a ball past the best centre-back in the world, go ahead.”
One of the best, you’d been one of the best once upon a time as well.
You looked down at the ball, beginning to dribble it a few steps forward, Leah followed, as you got to the top of the goal square, you knew you needed to cross it over from your right to your left, from your bad leg to your good one.
Knees were stupid.
You managed to cross the ball, but as you lunged off of your bad leg, it all went downhill.
You were on the ground in seconds, your body collapsing.
It wasn’t the same, you kept telling yourself that, that it wasn’t the same pain, it wasn’t the same agony.
Leah’s hands were on you immediately, rolling you over so that you were looking at each other.
“You just had to be a fucking idiot, what hurts, where does it hurt?”
You forced yourself to take a deep breath, before you started laughing.
Leah looked like she was going to strangle you.
“I’m okay Le, just stupid, okay, stupid that I thought that somehow it would all fucking click and that it would all somehow be fine.”
Leah’s face fell, and she collapsed down onto the ground besides you, one of her arms wrapping around your shoulder, bringing you closer to her.
“It sucks, but you need to come to terms with it baby, you have so many options, commentating, journalism, working with the team. I know it’s the end of your dream, and it fucking sucks, but it’s not worth hurting yourself more in the process. You’re my idiot, and I love you, but you need to find something else.”
You hated that you were being forced to find something else, that it wasn’t your choice, it had all just…. happened.
“I know.”
Leah nodded.
“C’mon, let’s get you home.”
2 years later
“Y/n, you’ve got the best perspective on this, what do you think it means for Arsenal to win the league like this?”
You’d watched your wife, win the league, win the triple this year, from the sidelines.
Commentating, reporting, it was all fun, but it wasn’t the same, if anything it was a stab in the heart.
“Well as everyone knows, as a Arsenal homegrown girl, this has been a long time coming, and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls, they’ve had a season of all seasons, I don’t think it could have been a better year for them.”
You looked backwards, at your wife, as the team stood on the stage ready to lift the trophy.
With every bone in your body you wished you were with them, but you couldn’t be.
“And to their captain, what do you think this means?”
You looked at Leah, how happy she looked.
“Well, considering Leah and I have been the same amount of time, put in all of the years and sweat and tears I can’t imagine that this couldn’t be the pinnacle of her career. It’s great to win things with country, but this is fulfillment, winning something like the league is something else because it means that all of the hardwork over a season is done, and you get to relax.”
You struggled to keep the tears at bay.
You wished you could know the true feeling, coaching, commentating, it didn’t do the same, it didn’t have the same kind of meaning behind it.
“Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to go and celebrate with my wife. This is y/n williamson signing off, I’ll see you next season.”
You pulled out your in ear and put your microphone back down on the stand, turning around and beginning to walk onto the pitch.
Leah caught your eyes quickly, it wasn’t hard considering the arsenal red suit you were wearing, and the slight staggered limp that you held as you walked towards her.
Leah smiled at you, big and bright.
Your lives weren’t over, in fact they were just beginning.
She hnaded the trophy over to Lia, before walking your way, running towards you and bringing you into her arms immediately.
“There’s my lucky charms.”
She looked down at your stomach and you couldn’t help but slap her.
It was your best kept secret, your career had been ended by your knee, but you’d chosen to start a new life, a better one.
“We wouldn’t have gotten here without you baby, off and on the pitch.”
You kept your blush to a minimum, unable to ignore the fact that the pinkness was rising up your neck.
“Alright softy, go and celebrate with the team, I’ll be here watching.”
Leah pouted, but nodded, pressing a kiss to your forehead before beginning to walk off.
Life wasn’t the same and it wasn’t how you wanted it, but it wasn’t over.

spiraling slightly about finally applying to grad school with a low gpa. I’m proud bc even getting to this point took a lot of work facing shame and I know my essay is strong but it might not even get read. I have an idea of what I’ll do if I don’t get in anywhere this first round but the whole thing is just so frustrating 😖 wish I could just pluck out the menty-b year from my transcript
Here's a little reassurance that's also very grounded in stastical reality and academic process, for what it's worth:
Depending on the graduate program, you're looking at about a 10% rate of acceptance on average. So receiving some rejections is normal -- it's typical to expect 90% of the schools you apply to to ultimately reject you. So if you get some rejection letters, know that it's not a reflection that you have failed, or that you're not graduate school material, it's a built-in part of the experience.
Additionally, *most* graduate programs have a GPA and standardized test score cut off, and all applications that fall below that cut-off are not even examined. For example, I applied to my undregrad alma mater, OSU, for graduate school, but my test scores were *one point below* the threshold they require, and so it didn't matter that I had been working for three years in two different social psychology labs for like 20 hours a week and had stellar recommendations from the school's own faculty. They didn't even look at that stuff. So, if you get some rejections, know that it's often nothing to do with your application materials at all. Yes this is fucked up. I think it's good to know that it's due to a built-in discrimination that THEY are doing, not anything you did.
Most people have to apply to multiple programs or apply multiple times over the course of a couple of years to find an acceptance at a school that is a good fit. It sounds like you have a back-up plan, which is definitely wise of you, but if you know in your heart that this is the path you want to pursue, don't let some rejections get you down on yourself. You can dust yourself off and apply again. I applied to I think 15? programs and got rejected by like 10 or 11 of them. That's par for the course.
The last thing I'll say is that graduate schools are exploitative, ableist environments that cause immense trauma to nearly every neurodivergent person who goes through them, so make sure you know what you are in for and have a really robust support system in place should you choose to pursue it.
It also *rarely* leads to any career prospects. To put it in perspective, blogging on tumblr helped my career more than 5 years of graduate study did. The blog The Professor is In by Karen Kelskey is a must read if you want a gut check for all the labor exploitation and poor preparation for the job market that happens in academia. you know your life, your values, and what excites and motivates you best, but graduate school is never an experience i proactively recommend to people.
ultimately i got very, very, very lucky as far as PhD's go, and even with that being the case in the end, graduate school still ruined my life and physical health.

The thing that’s pissing me off about this Faith Becoming a Doctor storyline is nothing to do with Faith and everything to do with how IT IS NOT THAT EASY! I have looked into training as a doctor and had to give up on it because it is logistically impossible for most working class people and casualty could have made a point here!
Right so first things first, there is no conversion degree for healthcare professionals- they just have to do the same graduate entry medical course as every other degree educated person. This degree is 4 years and only offered by a handful of medical schools in the country so let’s pretend Holby Medical School is one of these universities and just suspend our disbelief- moving on
Before she can even apply she would have to take this test called the GAMSAT which is absolutely ridiculous and now don’t get me wrong I think you should prove that you are academically capable of completing a degree before you start it but the GAMSAT is not doing that. For starters, it’s not a pass or fail, you’re ranked by percentile compared to other people who took it, so you don’t just have to prove you CAN do it, you also have to be better than everyone else who tries. Furthermore, the questions aren’t marked like the exams we took in school; or even uni. The entire paper is marked, and then the amount of marks a question is worth is decided based on how many people got it right. For example, a question 90% of people got right would be worth 1 point, but if that same question was only gotten right by 1% of people, it would be worth 10 points, so there is very little way to intelligently work for a better score. It’s also been proven by research that the correlation between GAMSAT percentile and completion of medical degree, academic attainment and retention by the NHS is not statistically significant. There are 2 sitting a year and you have to do them at the specified time and place, making it very hard for someone working shifts (like Faith) to get that test done. To add insult to injury, it is £250 PER ATTEMPT and you have pay for practice exams. Let’s not even get into how Faith is supposed to study for a test that is 5 hours long and 1 section reading comprehension, 1 section essay questions and then a third section which is UNDERGRADUATE level biology and chemistry and A2 level physics with no practice material all while working full time and being a single mother.
Secondly- the course is not entirely funded by student finance. Each year is 9.5k and only about 60% of this is covered by student finance. The other 40% ish is covered by an NHS bursary- except for the first year. This means you need to come up with about 3.8k (from memory) in tuition fees to sit the first year. Your NHS bursary doesn’t kick in until you pass first year and go into year 2. Faith will be paid more than a ‘regular’ nurse, but 4 grand is not a small sum of money and would be hard for her to pull together.
Finally- this is not a course that is offered part time (if they keep her in this show and pretend that she’s doing it part time or, even worse, as evening classes, I am going to LOSE MY MIND) and it’s very, very hard to have a part time job because of the heavy work load and eventual placement shifts. My fist degree was a BA and I had a job the whole time, but I also had low contact hours and no placements to do. There are no bursaries for living costs that I could find and there is no way you could live off a student finance maint loan, if they even offer you one, especially when you’re supporting 2 kids. Faith would not only need to live somewhere with a university that offered GEM, pay for and do well in the GAMSAT and have 4k to pay tuition her first year, she would also have to be able to stop working for 4 whole years.
This is not something she would do over the course of a few weeks, she would be worrying about funding, about living, about the kids and having a menty b about the GAMSAT. casualty could make a really good point here about how someone who would succeed as a doctor, and has committed her entire working life thus far to the NHS, financially could not afford to retrain. Instead I’m sure they are going to take the ‘night classes’ route and I am, in fact, going to LOSE MY MIND

TIMING: Before Mack's Barbie Party PARTIES: @escudofracturado & @letsbenditlikebennett SUMMARY: Alex goes to the art store to grab a sketch book and doesn't fully realize that the cashier is Milo until after she has a menty b and gets attacked by birds. CONTENT: Domestic abuse
If one could ignore the unnerving new painting on display and the bloodthirsty pencils that never knew when to stop, Periwinkle Paints was a pretty chill place to work. Now that the school year was finished, the store was a bit less hectic since many of the art students had gone elsewhere for the summer. There had been a few on the staff, too, so some of the familiar faces around the store had disappeared, including, to Milo’s disappointment, his fellow cashier Sita, who he had befriended over the past several weeks. At least he always had his discount.
It was a pretty slow day, and he was spending his free time working on his current knitting project– a color block cardigan that he wasn’t very far into. There was a group of noisy teens somewhere further into the store that his manager had gone to keep an eye on, leaving just him up front. He looked up as the bell on the door jingled, movements pausing for a moment as he greeted the newcomer with a smile. …Wait, he knew her, she had been at the party. Alex, the wolf girl. “Oh, hey, welcome! Let me know if you need anything, yeah?”
It had been a while since she had sketched or drawn much of anything. Alex had always enjoyed it. When it came to sketching the many supernatural creatures she’d studied and showing her parents she knew what they were, their weaknesses, their strengths— it was the one damn part of her training she was actually good at. At least the practiced skill had stuck with her enough for her to enjoy it as a casual hobby. Not that it felt casual today. Her hands itched to etch every detail into memory, one pencil stroke at a time.
The cashier who seemed to be about her age, greeted Alex as she entered the art supplies shop. She gave him a friendly smile and waved, “Appreciate it, just looking to pick up a sketchbook and maybe some colored pencils, pretty sure I can find them..” Not that any color or pencil stroke could fully capture the magic she felt down in that pit cave, but damn did she want to try. Maybe even give one of the better sketches to Cass as a gift before the logical part of her brain could think better of it.
Alex realized a lot of people must have taken advantage of the sale this past weekend, because the aisle was fairly cleaned out. Surely, there’d still be at least a couple of sketchbooks left for her to choose from. Which was the case as she scanned the aisle, but they were all the same color– a grayish yellow that transported her back to another life. Lève-toi, petit. Her father’s voice rang in her head all too clearly and she could practically feel herself being thrusted back into another round of sparring where she got knocked to the ground over and over until the tears threatened to spill over her eyes. Ne pleure pas, bats-toi.
Somewhere in the unwelcome stroll down memory lane, the air in her lungs had seemingly turned to rock, anchoring Alex to the spot she stood in for longer than was seemingly normal for anyone to be looking at sketchbooks. The harsh fluorescent lights only made her feel more exposed and she rushed out the front door only to have something swooping down on her. “What the–,” she swatted at the bird, backing back into the store clutching the cut on her arm from the talon.
“I’ll be here if you need any help,” Milo nodded at the redhead as she went off to find her sketching materials. Picking his needles back up, he knit and purled along, his ball of yarn situated underneath the register. He wished he were any good at sketching, but drawing both of the cartoon and realistic variety had never been his forte. Painting was much more enjoyable for him. The coloring and shading aspects had always been his favorite part of art classes anyway.
He had finished up a row of stitches and was starting another when Alex came running out of the aisles, looking panicked. Shit, he probably should’ve warned her about the pencils. They had calmed down for a few days, but you never knew when they would start misbehaving again. Standing, Milo was going over to check on her when she pushed through the door, though she had just stepped outside when he heard the familiar sound of bird calls. Oh no. She backed into the store once again, now holding her arm.
“Shit, are you okay?” he asked, concern evident in his voice as he caught sight of the cut on her arm.
Some combination of the blood flowing from her arm and the memory of the faded yellow door made the air in her lungs feel like lead. Alex found it difficult to gasp in another breath as she remembered her blood dripping on the concrete floor. She could practically feel tically hear her younger self pleading to be let out, for her father to look at her to no avail unless she made the targets. She felt like she was back in the room, begging to be let out and the voice coming from behind her took a moment to register.
It made the breath seem to anchor in her throat as she tried to call out an answer. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to see her in this panicked state and Alex had half a mind to run right back out the door if the same birds hadn’t seemed to be staring right at her through the window. Connards. She held her arm close to her and forced herself to breathe more slowly. “Uh, yeah,” she answered, still not fully present. She blinked a few times to shake away images of a room she never had to enter again.
Alex made a conscious effort to not look at her own bleeding arm. Despite being trained on basic first aid and waking up covered in it three mornings a month, blood still made her queasy. Almost lightheaded, though she would never admit that much. She turned to face the cashier and realized she knew the cashier. Fuck. Putain. Merde. Of course the poor guy she dared to eat soap was the one to see her having a meltdown in the middle of a fucking art store. “Shit, sorry,” she shook her head, “Milo, right?”
Alex gestured with her non-injured arm toward the door. “Uh, birds outside just don’t seem too happy with me is all.”
As had been made apparent in his adventures in the caves of Wicked’s Rest, Milo wasn’t good with blood. It hadn’t bothered him much before, but now… He froze, his throat closing up for a moment. No, no, no. Come on!
He had been having some bad days recently, and had just wanted a calm one today. Forcing his eyes shut, he took a few deep breaths. You’re okay. You’re in the store. You’re at work. You’re with Alex. Alex is bleeding, but she’s okay. Everything was okay. He opened his eyes, noticing that the aforementioned Alex did not look okay. She was speaking, though.
“Yeah, Milo.” He sounded distant, preoccupied. It felt like he had been underwater, was struggling to pull his head up entirely, but he forced himself to focus on her. “You’re Alex.” It helped to say it aloud. You’re at work. You’re okay. You’re with Alex. Alex is a customer.
He looked to where she was pointing; a bird was sitting calmly on the sidewalk. Right, the birds had attacked her.  “Yeah, um– I don’t– They hang around the store for whatever reason, and attack people sometimes. I don’t know what the deal is there, but they always come back.” Since the first incident he had witnessed with the birds, he had wondered if they were a sort of familiar or if there was conjuring involved. That was more– He took another breath.
“Also,” glancing over his shoulder, Milo checked to make sure his manager wasn’t around, but It seemed he hadn’t heard the commotion, wherever he was with the other customers. “I have noticed they will go for shoplifters.” He shook his head. “Narcs.” It was directed at the door with a wrinkle of his nose and the hint of a smile.
“Sorry, I was a little weird for a second,” he said, figuring it best to just put it out there. “I’m not the best with blood.” Rubbing at the back of his neck, Milo glanced in the general direction of her arm. “We have a first aid kit in the break room,” he offered.
Apparently they had both gotten a little lost for a moment. Between the blood and the flashback, Alex was still in somewhat of a haze as she stood still just past the entryway of the shop. So much, she wanted to be stronger than she felt in that moment and wear a face of composure. This was one of Cass’s friends and she desperately wanted to make a good impression. Something about shoplifters had vaguely stuck out amongst the rest of Milo’s words. Had she even shoplifted? If it weren’t for being shaken up, she’d find it almost humorous getting busted for shoplifting when she hadn’t even— then she felt the charcoal pencil in her pocket. Damn, had it really become that habitual?
“Ha,” Alex retorted with an uneasy laugh, “I knew birds were just government spies.” At least it was a good joke to fall back on, even if it rang flat and her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her arm still remained uncomfortably tucked into her side as she avoided looking at it. As it turned out, neither of them were great with blood. All was well and good for Milo, there was no reason for him to be. But she was supposed to be a ranger and now she was a monster? What kind of monster who woke up covered in the stuff three mornings a month still felt faint at the sight of it?
“No worries,” she responded, as if she hadn’t spent the entirety of her life worrying, “It’s not exactly the most fun thing to look at— so you’re so good.” First aid kit was probably for the best. She’d slap a bandage on it for now and have Andy clean it properly when she got home. “Would appreciate that first aid kit though,” she smiled, a little easier this time as she settled into the interaction and realized she wasn’t the only one who had been battling some form of nerves.
“Lead the way,” she said as she followed along. Follow Milo, slap on a band-aid, stop acting like a scared kid. Really, a short check-list. Alex could do this. She released some of the tension and asked, “So what have you been up to since the party? Hopefully not pissing off the birds?”
He laughed, the joke helping to pull him out of his head a bit more. Still, Alex looked dazed and upset, which was valid for someone who had just gotten attacked by a bird and had maybe been attacked by the pencils before that, too. She had tried to run out very quickly, so either something had happened or she was a very unsubtle shoplifter. Milo just hoped she was okay. He couldn’t give less of a shit if the girl was stealing, and it was ridiculous that the manager or owner or whoever the fuck was controlling the birds thought it was okay to actually attack someone over a few fucking art supplies. Maybe it was the work of whoever kept cursing those damn pencils.
The whole blood issue would be less of a worry if it weren’t such a recent development. While seeing his own blood wasn’t anything to panic over, others’ was a problem now, it seemed. But, whatever. First aid kit.
“Right, it’s just over here,” he said, leading the way to the break room. Perking up at her questions, Milo laughed. “Thankfully not. Mostly just been working and trying to find a more permanent place to stay,” he shrugged. “Helping out at the bookstore, too, since I’ve been staying with the owner. What about you, though? Manage to get anyone else to eat soap recently?” He asked with a grin.
Stepping into the small room that functioned as both the locker room and kitchen, he held the door open for the girl. “Might wanna wash it first,” he said, nodding toward the sink before grabbing the bright red box out of the corner and setting it down on a nearby table.
“Well, I hope you find a good place soon,” Alex smiled, “If you need help, I know a guy.” She wasn’t sure Alan really did rentals like that, but hey, he had a lot of people who worked for him. He could probably at least point her friend in the right direction. She did her best to focus on Milo’s words as she made quick work of at least cleaning the scratches and slapping a band aid on them. It was hardly true first aid and she wasn’t sure how deep the cuts actually went, but if she kept looking down at the blood, she was fairly certain she was going to pass out in the employee room of the art store which was not the vibe.
“Book store,” Alex perked up, “I love a good book store… almost as much as I love a good book. Looks like I may have to visit you at work… again. Maybe skip the getting attacked by birds next time though.” She laughed lightly which was a lot easier now that the wound itself was out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind was her specialty after all. “And no, haven’t gotten anyone else to eat soap,” she gave Milo a playful nudge, “That’s our thing, bestie.”
It was kind of nice, to think that they had a thing— an inside joke of sorts. Alex found herself hoping that they could make more of those, even if she had made a little bit of an ass of herself during this visit to the art supplies store, but with another party at Mack’s around the corner, the werewolf knew they’d have plenty of time for bonding.

George Harrison, Friar Park, circa 1990; photo by Terry O'Neill.
George's jukebox at Kinfauns has been explored by the Harrison Archive (and is available as a playlist here), thanks in large part to an article about it, published in the Record Mirror's 1 January 1966 issue.
George's jukeboxes at Friar Park, however, are a little more obscure. The following playlist of songs featured on the jukeboxes and mentioned in some way from 1970 onward is an approximate one only, based on doing some digging into print interviews, audio interviews, and written pieces by family and friends. (The tracks include information previously posted on the Harrison Archive. For - hopefully - easier navigation, I've also bolded the artists -- and tracks known for certain to have been either on the jukeboxes or George's favorites.)
"Stardust" (instrumental) - Hoagy Carmichael "Our son, Dhani, and I, like George’s friends, were spoiled by his rich and loving presence: from the morning wake-up call, which could have been (depending on our location and mood) a morning raga, a Vedic chant, a Mozart concerto, Cab Calloway’s ‘Bugle Call Rag,’ or Hoagy’s earliest instrument version of ‘Stardust'..." - Olivia Harrison [read more]
"Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" - The Four Tops "Rescue Me" - Fontella Bass
These tracks receive shoutouts in George's "This Song" (and the Four Tops were Sixties favorites, too, appearing on his Kinfauns jukebox).
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" - Cab Calloway Clearly a favorite by one of his favorite artists, covered by George for Jools Holland's TV show, and also released on his posthumous album Brainwashed.
"When I'm Cleaning Windows" - George Formby "September In The Rain" - Dinah Washington "Dizzy Fingers" - Zez Confrey
George was a member of the George Formby Society (and attended conventions with Olivia and Dhani), and became friends with another attendee, Ray Bernard, who recalled the latter two of the above songs as some of George's favorites. (The Beatles also covered "September In The Rain" for their Decca audition; I'm not sure if George preferred Dinah Washington's version to any other, but its release year is closest to when the Fabs covered it, hence the inclusion on the playlist.)
"A Shine On Your Shoes" - Fred Astaire
Covered by George in a home video shared by the Harrison Family in the Guitar Collection app and the deluxe limited edition of Living In The Material World (and, on 1 February 2020, by Olivia on her Instagram, where she explained that George was playing a Danny Ferrington Keoki ukulele).
"True Love" - Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly
George covered this song as well, for his 1976 album Thirty-Three & 1/3. As Olivia recalled on Dark Horse Radion in 2018: "We'd been watching ‪Bing Crosby‬ and Grace Kelly, watching that movie ['High Society'], and they do a duet, and just that little harmony thing they do, because she wasn’t known as really a singer; he’d play and then we'd sing it." [read more]
"Roll Over Beethoven" - Chuck Berry
A longtime favorite, George covered this with The Beatles, during his 1991 Japan tour, and during his 1992 Natural Law Party concert, where it became the last song he played live onstage at a concert in his lifetime. As George said, "there hasn’t been any rock & roll better than that." [read more]
"Hong Kong Blues" - Hoagy Carmichael
Hoagy Carmichael was a favorite of George's, and he covered this song for his 1981 album Somewhere In England.
"Barnacle Bill the Sailor" - Hoagy Carmichael
A favorite, associated with George by Dhani, and mentioned by Olivia. "He would go up at parties to the DJ and say, ‘I’ve got something really amazing.’ ‘Cause he was who he was, they would listen to him, and then everyone would just be bummed out, it would clear the dance floor. And then he’d come back later - ‘I’ve got something else’ - and he’d put it on again. You know, he would just do this until the DJ was like [exasperated]." - Dhani Harrison, la minute rock, Rolling Stone France, 28 Nov 2017 [read more]
"Midnight Special" - Leadbelly "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" - Hank Williams "The Great Pretender" - The Platters "Words Of Love" - Buddy Holly
The songs themselves might not be George's favorites or jukebox selections -- as yet, I haven't found any mention of actual song titles, so these are just personal choices -- but the artist were mentioned by George and Olivia; and "Words Of Love" was obviously a favorite, having been covered by The Beatles, and, according to Mark Lewisohn's Complete Beatles Chronicle research, initially having been sung by George and John.
"The Ying Tong Song" - The Goons "I'm Walking Backwards For Christmas" - The Goons
Both these tracks were mentioned by Olivia as having been on the Friar Park jukeboxes in December 1974.
"The Lumberjack Song" - Monty Python "Spam Song" - Monty Python "Layla" - Eric Clapton
These tracks were mentioned by Eric Idle as having been on George's jukeboxes at Friar Park. "The Lumberjack Song" was of course also performed at the Concert for George.
"Heartbreak Hotel" - Elvis Presley
Eric Idle also recalled early Elvis being on the jukeboxes; and of course, George named the song as his first musical root.
"Blue Suede Shoes" - Carl Perkins "The Bells of Rhymney" - The Byrds
These two Perkins and Byrds songs were mentioned as favorite songs by George in the March 1997 issue of Guitar World.
"Mauna Loa" - Gabby Pahinui
Another artist loved by George, although again, this track choice is just a haphazard personal one, since there doesn't seem to be any public mention of which of Pahinui's songs were George's preferred ones.
"Ooo Baby Baby" - The Miracles "I'll Try Something New" - The Miracles
George absolutely loved The Miracles, and Smokey Robinson specifically, collecting their records, and writing songs in honor of Smokey ("Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You) -- a nod to the first of the two Miracles tracks listed here -- on the 1975 album Extra Texture, and "Pure Smokey" on the 1976 album Thirty-Three & 1/3). As Olivia has recalled: "We used to sit around singing a lot of Smokey Robinson songs. That kind of sealed our relationship, I think. [George] said, 'You're the only person I've ever known who sang the high note at the end of "I'll Try Something New."'"
“Back On The Chain Gang” - The Pretenders “Brothers In Arms” - Dire Straits “Cold Day In Hell” - Gary Moore
The three tracks by The Pretenders, Dire Straits and Gary Moore were mentioned as favorites by George in the March 1997 issue of Guitar World.
"Long Tall Sally" - Little Richard
George was a Little Richard all his life, as various comments over the years show.
"Tandoori Chicken" - Ronnie Spector "I Am Missing You" - Lakshmi Shankar "Rebel Music" (live) - Bob Marley & The Wailers
Put down on tape during the "Try Some, Buy Some" sessions, "Tandoori Chicken" was an improvised song, as George recalled: "a 12-bar thing done on the spot with Mal our roadie and Joe the chauffeur." For Dark Horse Records, and featuring Lakshmi Shankar, one of [George's] favorite singers," another song for this playlist is "I Am Missing You." The Marley track was chosen from the setlist of the three 1975 Roxy show attended by George and Olivia, recalled by George as "the best thing I've seen in ten years. [...] I could watch The Wailers all night."
"The Rain Song" - Led Zeppelin "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" - The Beach Boys
"The Rain Song" was written in response to a comment made by George, and subsequently made it on one of the two jukeboxes. The Beach Boys song was on the jukeboxes, and -- like "The Rain Song" -- played at the wedding of Dhani and Sola, as reported by Vogue in 2012.
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" - Stevie Wonder "Telephone Line" - Electric Light Orchestra "Come On In My Kitchen" - Robert Johnson "When The Levee Breaks" - Memphis Minnie
All four of these artists were mentioned as favorites by George in a 1976 interview. (The titles are arbitrary choices, since the interviewer didn't ask George for any further details. However, Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" was covered by George and band during rehearsals for the Concert for Bangladesh.)
"Maria Elena" - Ry Cooder "Concert in B (live in 1963) - Andrés Segovia
Two artists mentioned frequently by George as being favorites (Segovia first in 1963 -- hence the choice of a live piece from that year -- and up through the 1990s). The Cooder track was specifically mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
"Piano Concert No. 21" - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Olivia mentioned a Mozart concerto as being something George would play in the mornings as they were starting the day, so this is another random choice of a concerto.
"The Weight" - The Band
The atmosphere of the song inspired the Harrisong "All Things Must Pass," as George recalled in 1987 -- he also named it as a song he admired in that same interview. In a 1974 interview with Capital Radio, George deemed The Band "the best band I've ever seen."
"Farther On Down The Road (You Will Accompany Me)" - Jesse Ed Davis
A Harrisong was given to Jesse by George, and recorded by Jesse before it was released by George himself (but since "Sue Me, Sue You Blues," the song in question, is already on a collaborations playlist....); this Davis selection (written by Jesse and Taj Mahal) was covered live by George and Eric Clapton in December 1978.
"Isn't It A Pity" (cover) - Nina Simone "Backwater Blues" - Big Bill Broonzy "Changes" - Bix 'n' Bing
Nina Simone's cover of the Harrisong "Isn't It A Pity" in turn influenced the mood of another Harrisong; and Dhani recalled listening to Simone, Big Bill Broonzy (who is name-checked in the Harrisong "Wreck Of The Hesperus") and Bix 'n' Bing together with his dad (these tracks are once more personal choices).
"April Kisses" - Eddie Lang
The first song on this playlist, "Stardust," was "one of [George's] favorite songs," as Olivia has recalled; she also named Eddie Lang (though she didn't mention a specific title).
"Kalimankou Denkou" - Le Mystere des voix bulgares
George enthused about this Bulgarian choir in numerous interviews, and introduced this particular song during his interview on Rockline in February 1988.
"Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All" - Ry Cooder
"Later, after a lasagna dinner in his ornately paneled kitchen with his wife Olivia, their son Dhani (just home from his school year at Brown University in the States), and Olivia’s sister, Linda, Harrison takes his visitor upstairs to his Friar Park Studio. Picking up a nearby National dobro from the vast array of vintage guitars hanging from the walls, Harrison slips a glass bottleneck on his finger as he seats himself to strum 'The Farmer Is The Man Who Feeds Us All,' the traditional tune of 1860s America made famous in the 1920s by Fiddlin’ John Carson and later popularized on Ry Cooder’s 1971 'Into The Purple Valley” album as 'Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All.' 'That’s where I first heard the tune,”'says Harrison of Cooder’s interpretation, before he begins to sing: 'The farmer is the man, the farmer is the man/Buys on credit until the fall/Then they take him by the hand/And they lead him from his land/And the merchant he’s the man who gets it all.'" (Billboard, 19 Jun 1999)
"God's Own Drunk" - Lord Buckley
This particular Buckley piece was mentioned by George in a 1979 radio interview promoting his eponymous album, and the song "If You Believe": "Pray, give up, and it all recedes away from you. I don’t know if you… you must have heard Lord Buckley, you know, well, there is a thing he did called 'God’s Own Drunk.' I think it was that. Anyway, it was one of Lord Buckley’s things and he was talking about love. He said: 'Love is like a beautiful garden, you know, when you use it it spreads, but when you don’t -- it recedes.' And it’s true. It’s really that in its simplest form." [read more]
"Free Fallin'" - Tom Petty
As Dhani has said, he can remember "getting advance copies sent to my dad from Tom. He’d be like, 'You want to hear Tom’s new stuff?' And it would be the first time anyone’s heard 'Free Fallin'." (Premier Guitar, Jan 2018)
"Let It Be Me" - The Everly Brothers
Covered by George in a demo version after seeing the Everly Brothers in concert (George's cover appears on Early Takes Vol. 1).
"Clair de Lune" (cover) - Isao Tomita
One of George's favorites, as Olivia has recalled.
"México Lindo y Querido" - Jorge Negrete
Negrete was mentioned as a favorite by George, and Olivia recalled Negrete being on George's jukebox.
"Bugle Call Rag" - Cab Calloway
Recalled by Olivia in her introduction for Harrison, and as George's school wakeup call for Dhani.
"Cool River" - Maria Muldaur "Fear Of Flying" - Charlie Dore
Two more specific songs mentioned or covered by George.
"Sweet Leilani" - Bing Crosby
Mentioned as a favorite of George's by Tom Petty, and by Olivia.
"Every Grain Of Sand" - Bob Dylan
Named as one of George's favorite songs in his June 1999 Billboard interview: "I mean, you tell me one person other than Bob Dylan who has a moral message in a tune that's improved upon Bob's words in his song 'Every Grain of Sand.'"
"Kaliyuga Varadan" & "Ragam Tanam Pallavi" & "Gajavadhana" - U. Srinivas
One of George's favorite artists, as he, Dhani and Olivia have recalled; these three particular tracks were singled out by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
"Raga - Manj Khamaj" - Ravi Shankar "Guru Bandana (Prayer)" - Ali Akbar Khan "Abhogi" - Hariprasad Chaurasia "Kafi Holi (Spring Festival Of Color)" - Ravi Shankar "Enna Thavam" - Papanasam Sivan "Thumri - Mishra Tilang Raga - Addha Taal" - Sultan Khan "You And Me" - Zakir Hussain "Raga Chayya Nat" - Kala Ramnath
The eight selections above are mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
“México” - Mariachi Sol de Mexico
In 1998, George commissioned José Hernández - founder of Mariachi Sol de México - to translate and arrange the Harrisong "Dark Sweet Lady" in Spanish, as a special version for Olivia. While that recording is understandably a private one, mariachi music seems to have been a favorite of the Harrison family and the Arias family, as it's mentioned as having been played at family events held in California. And: "Last year I brought over a mariachi orchestra [Mariachi Sol de México] and we had a private concert at Friar Park because I got tired of waiting 30 years for someone else to do it. It was my way to let my friends experience that music – which was what George was always trying to do. He wanted people to understand and be moved by the music that he loved." - Olivia Harrison, Songlines, Jun 2018
"Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie" - Bob Dylan "Bhoop Ghara" - Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma, Brij Bhushan Kabra
"George used to always say that if ever you are not feeling right, you should listen to Bob Dylan's 'Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie' and 'Call of the Valley.'" (Olivia Harrison) This track from "Call Of The Valley" was mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines: "[it was] something George had on our juke box. We played it as a remedy in our home if you were feeling a certain way. Kabra was one of George’' heroes as a slide guitarist, up there with Ry Cooder."
"Sarve Shaam" - Ravi Shankar
From the 1997 album Chants of India (produced by George), the song was also performed at the Concert for George, and was clearly very special to George, as Olivia remembers: "At the end of his life George said to me that all he could listen to was 'Sarve Shaam.' After all the sounds and sights and tastes you experience over a lifetime, it came down to the purity of 'Sarve Shaam.'"

Catecismo Responde 15/04
Tumblr media
a) Antes do parto.
c) Depois do parto.

Read the full article

Hebden Bridge to Horton
June 2nd 2018 – Hebden Bridge to Cowling (14.4 miles)
After the exhausting 29 miler the day before, I thought this one would seem more like a rest day as I headed out at a leisurely 9:30am. I was looking forward to meeting my youngest son, Alex, in Cowling, and he would then hike with me for five days.
As I headed out over Heptonstall Moor in cool, low cloud, the haunting calls of the curlew echoed out of the thick mist, taunting me with their warbling whistles, seemingly intensifying the sound of silence in between I called out, to give the stillness shape and meaning. But my words went unheard, dissolving into the fog like seeds cast adrift in a sea of uncertainty. It felt like I was the only person on earth until a fellow hiker suddenly materialized out of the haze, sorely tempting me with directions to a nearby hostelry, the Pack Horse Inn. But I had an important rendezvous to make so quickly headed on over Wadsworth Moor, skirting Walshaw Dean Reservoir, only to be dive bombed by breeding green plovers, with their erratic acrobatics and characteristic 'pewit' calls.
Traversing Stanbury Moor and Withins Heights to the piercing whistles of the black and white oyster catchers with their long orange beaks, I noticed a nondescript derelict farmhouse mysteriously appear on the horizon – a plaque described it as the inspiration for the Earnshaw Home in Emily Brontes novel Wuthering Heights, where Elizabeth's final words were “I wish I were out of doors – half savage and hardy - I’m sure I should be myself were I once among the heather on those hills”. I completely agree with Elizabeth's sentiment and felt honored to be in the location which inspired such beautiful writing from a great author.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After skirting Ponden Reservoir and traversing Ickornshaw Moor I finally arrived at the quaint village of Cowling, brimming with character limestone cottages, and eventually located my accommodation, Mallard House, around 5pm. The owner, a father Christmas look-a-like, showed me around the spacious two floor apartment and Alex finally arrived around 7.30pm after a long trip from London by bus and train. We carried on where we'd last left off over a delicious fish pie and a few bottles of Timothy Taylors ale at the Harlequin Bistro.
June 3rd  2018 – Cowling to Malham (16.8 miles)
We set of around 8.30am under partly sunny skies in a cool 60F. Our first brief rest was in Lothersdale, one of the most beautiful villages in the Yorkshire Dales, before heading over Elslack Moor to Thornton in Craven, East Marton and then Gargrave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Sunday so roast beef with Yorkshire pudding was on the menu at the Masons Arms -- Sunday roasts are hard to come by in New York so this was not to be missed! The excellent lunch was washed down with a couple of pints of Wainwright's cask ale – it seemed fitting that this brew, which we would be tasting in many pubs over the coming days, is named after a well known British hiker, Alfred Wainwright.
While still compos mentis we extracted ourselves from the pub and headed out through Airton and Kirkby Malham along a beautiful stretch of the River Aire where, at some point we picked up a fellow hiker, Edward, a chatty engineer from Keighley. I unfortunately also picked up a horsefly bite which I knew from experience would swell up my hand over the next three days before subsiding – it looked much worse than it was! We finally arrived at Miresfield b&b in Malham around 5.30pm and, after a brief rest, headed out to the the Listers Arms for pie, mash and mushy peas washed down by yet more Wainwrights.
Tumblr media
June 4th 2018 – Malham to Horton (14.1 miles)
Setting out at a leisurely 9.30am under partly sunny skies into the most beautiful limestone scenery was a perfect start to the day – over the next few days we would see some of my favorite landscapes and I was glad that Alex was with me to experience it. The light seems more intense as the sun reflects off the glistening white stone, randomly poking out of rolling carpets of grazed green valleys. Streams mysteriously disappear into the ground while springs bubble up from nowhere. The River Aire emerges from under Malham Cove, a 260 foot high limestone cliff formed during the last ice age by a waterfall – we decided to take the scarier route which involved a three-foot wide path traversing the cliff face part way up. It took me back about 22 years to the Canary Islands where I'd been exploring the rock pools with Alex, then a four year old, and we'd got cut off by the rising tide. So we scrambled straight up the headland – Alex was directly in front of me so I could catch him if he fell – we had no choice. We'd got to the top and climbed over the viewing balcony fence to looks of astonishment He'd climbed with the confidence of a professional Don't get me wrong. I've done some pretty scary climbing in my time. But today, on Malham Cove, Alex looked as if he was taking a stroll along the beach while I clung to the cliff wall for dear life with a wildly beating heart. I'd clearly raised him to be fearless.
Tumblr media
We strode over the deeply grooved limestone pavement above the cove, skirted the wind blown Malham Tarn and headed over Fountains Fell before a steep scramble over Pen-Y-Ghent (2277 feet) in thick mist – we were in our element and have always enjoyed a good scramble together.
Tumblr media
We eventually arrived at the Crown Hotel in Horton around 4.30pm and after a brief rest headed down for dinner – lasagna accompanied by Theakstons Old Peculiar and Black Sheep ales. We chatted with Steve, whom I'd met earlier on the trail – meeting the same people at different stages of the trail would become the norm.

Some of these reasons can be caused by a fortuitous event, but there are times when the cause of water damage can be avoided.
A. Water Damage Caused by Calamities
Storms and hurricanes are the usual acts of God that cause water damage. This is why it is important to build a sturdy home if you live in an area where storms and hurricanes occur often. However, disaster-prone homes are not the only homes that should be prepared for calamities.
The effect of any force of nature on your home can be too severe that the damage can be seen immediately. On the contrary, the damage can be too small that you would not notice it until the damage is already visible.
This is due to the fact that heavy rains can also cause water damage, especially when your home is structurally poor. These types of water damage can be too sudden that you would not have time to prepare when it comes. This is why it is important to prepare for calamities like it could occur at any time.
B. Broken Plumbing System and Pipes
youtube
Another major cause of water damage to your property is the broken pipelines or plumbing. Broken plumbing commonly occurs when your pipes are older since they are prone to cracking. Despite being able to last for a couple of decades, your plumbing system also needs proper maintenance for it to function well.
In addition to this, broken pipes can also be caused by the weather. When it is too cold, the pipelines can burst, which can lead to further water damage. There are also times when a human error causes broken plumbing system. This is common when there is a construction that is undergoing because these types of machinery can cause cracks and collapse of broken plumbs and pipes.
There are times when cracked pipes would go unnoticed until the water has pooled around in a large quantity. However, there are certain signals that can tell you that there is a broken plumbing system in your home. Simple signs like the presence of foul odor and bubbling noises are an indication of a broken sewage line.
C. Water Buildup in Water Damage-Prone Spaces
There are certain spaces in your home that are really prone to water damage. These spaces are your basement, attic, gutters, and other spaces that are deep and shallow like your roof gutter. This is because it catches more water and it will be able to keep the water in a certain area for a long time, which can cause water damage.
On top of that, these areas of your home are barely noticeable and rarely frequented, which is why it is too late before we notice the water damage issue. There are times when you suddenly wonder why the structure of your home has suddenly weakened or collapsed. You may also be surprised as to why there is suddenly moisture on your floor and ceiling.
D. Faulty Household Appliances
One other cause of water damage is household appliances that are malfunctioning. The appliances that you should always be wary of are your washing machine and dishwasher. However, you should also check your air conditioning, dehumidifier, heater, and refrigerator.
Since most of these appliances contain water, it is easy to understand that they can overflow when they are faulty or malfunctioning. When these appliances are unattended, the water will overflow and create a pool of water. This can cause severe water damage to your appliance and the areas proximate to the machinery.
The Effects of Water Damage on your Home
There are times when the effects of water damage can be felt within minutes. However, there are also times when the damage can be seen after a few days or weeks. The effects can be visible to the eyes, but there are dangers that cannot be seen. Water damage can expose you to occupational, health, and safety hazards. We will discuss further the timeline of the water damage in the section below. These effects are why it is critical that you contact an expert water damage restoration provider as soon as possible.
A. Molds and Health Issues
The mold growth in your home can happen after a few weeks. However, the adverse effects on your health and wellness may be felt within days. The molds can become evident when you feel that your allergies are starting to flare up. Since molds thrive on water, it is easy for them to grow when the water damage has been left untreated for a long period of time.
In addition to this, the growth of molds can also damage the aesthetic of your home. This is because it can leave marks of mold growth in the form of fungi and the green grass-like molds that grow on the surface of your wall. In terms of health issues, you can feel it when you begin to have respiratory problems like allergies, asthma, and bronchitis. It can take months or weeks after the mold growth before the health issues can take effect.
On the other hand, the smell that is caused by mold growth can still linger for a long period of time. However, there is an effect caused by molds that can be felt within minutes. The quality of the air can become poor once the molds begin to grow.
Another health issue that you can face is the contamination of water. This can lead to skin allergies if you come in contact with contaminated water. In addition to this, you will be exposed to bacteria and fungi. Due to these elements, the residents of a home can become more prone to contracting sickness.
B. Furniture and Appliances
One of the first few components of your home that can feel the damage of a flood is the pieces of your furniture. Whether it is a wooden bed or a television set, a flood can damage your valuables and belongings within minutes. When it comes to wooden pieces of furniture, the presence of water can cause the structure to weaken. In addition to this, it can also be a home for molds, which has an adverse effect on the wood in itself.
There are types of furniture that are sensitive to water and they turn white as soon as it comes in contact with water. Moreover, there are certain pieces of furniture that will swell during water damage. The paint on your furniture can also chip and transfer to walls or floors. They can also be discolored during prolonged exposure to water.
For electrical appliances, the damage will become more evident as they can malfunction immediately. Moreover, it becomes more dangerous when your appliance is not waterproof. There are times when the damage can still be repaired. On the contrary, there are times when the damage is too severe that it would be impossible to repair the appliance. In addition to this, the exposure of electrical appliances to water can even cause electrical hazards.
C. Structure of the House
Similar to your furniture, the effect of water damage on your structure can happen within minutes. In the event that you have a wooden floor, there is a tendency that the floor will swell. This can lead to difficulty in walking and it can even become dangerous for the residents of the building to live in the property.
When you have a carpeted floor, it is more difficult to clean and treat it since it is made of fabric. Depending on the material made for the carpet, the fabric can become discolored. However, the main issue with carpeted floors and water damage is that it will become easier for molds to grow on it because cleaning the carpet will become tough. You cannot simply vacuum the water out of the carpet since you can damage both the vacuum and the carpet.
Your walls are also not spared from the damage of flood. This is because a water-soaked wall will have a greater tendency to become discolored. In most cases that we have handled, you will see that a home has experienced water damage when the walls have changed its color. A white colored wall can have spots of yellow after a flood, especially when it took too long before the water was taken out.
What to do when there is Water Damage?
If you are wondering whether you should evacuate from your home as soon as there are signs of water damage, the answer is dependent on how severe the situation is. If the situation is extremely brutal, it is important to evacuate immediately since the occupational hazard will also be severe. When you live in a home that is flooded, you are exposed to health and electrical hazards.
However, when the damage is not ruthless, it is fine to stay at home. Despite this, it is still important to call for help whenever there is water damage, no matter how small it may seem. The water damage may seem minimal for now. However, it will continuously grow and it may surprise you that the problem has turned into a severe one.
