I just found out yesterday that Li Quanzhe is also a contestant in Asia Super Young?

I first knew him from Idol Producer and tbh I didn't follow Cpop after that, but I did know that he debuted with Zhu Zhengting and Justin in Huang after Nine Percent, so I was surprised.

I mean Zhu Zhengting is literally one of the mentors, so this situation would be hard for both of them. I really hope for the best for him.

general thoughts:

i switched over to youku to watch and the subs are 100% machine generated i hate it hereeee

i need them to put names in the subtitles and NOT TRANSLATE THEM youku rdgaf 😭

there's way too much yuehua on this show and it's fucking up the vibes. literally 12/63, 10 of whom already debuted, plus 2/5 mentors. it's so unfortunate. and they didn't even have the decency to put them in one audition group nooo they were split across like 4 diff auditions and they kinda pretend not to know eachother (except when they dont) which is......

there are too many "known" trainees & idols. as someone who's coming into the show only familiar with one trainee (ollie) by name, the disconnect between what we see and the votes is too much.

the ways in which the voting has been restricted is so alienating, wdym i have to check multiple apps & rely on more connected fans to figure out what the rankings *might* be 🙄

RAIN IS SOOOOO ANNOYING LEAVE WANG KUN ALONE!!!! he gives good feedback tbh but how come when it comes to freshly 18 year old wang kun allhis comments are just "daddy 😏" when he's clearly super uncomfortable???? some of the nuance could be lost in translation but so many ppl r calling him out for being weird so

i need more cheng xiao & more zhengting, they have the potential to hard carry the mentor team but rain won't shut uppppp

performances:

no performance really struck me so i can't really rank them. but Team Tan Yitian's Phantom & Team Gemini's Lydia stood out as being the most "complete."

Notes i took while watching:

phantom - aihe's team: aihe & hugo (& ansel) ate, idc what anyone says. hugo was already on my notice list but now he's def top 9. noticed: hugo - wong singcheuk (apex, 03) & ansel - a xinran (trainee 18, 00). hyungseo face, great vocals. very stupid response to the judges hype's over

phantom - tan yitian's team: not mad they won but the operatic/dramatic vibe aihe's team went with was smart. this was more straight forward. tan yitian (skye, enone) & liang shiyu (boyhood) stood out but not enough to be picks.

one and only - zhong junyi's team: unremarkable but i also don't like the song much. its dumb that they were fighting over a nonexistent dance break. zhong junyi (one) was the most noticeable, and wu xuanye (aiden) was the only one who looked happy.

one and only - muqing's team: lui & tomoki were cute. service forgot his main rap part. walker (wang kun) is very 143 ent coded (puppy face). wang muqing (boyhood) is popular but he looks too much like xinxi & yitian for me to have them all as picks. like where's the diversity idk. huang xin (eliott) was endearing in a funny way.

lydia - archie's team: honestly didn't notice kingsley (yang yichen) much here but he won yay. honda hiromu & my foreigner bias i was endeared by him + archie teaching him the lyrics

lydia - gemini's team: overall more complete stage. not sure how gemini won but im very happy about it. everyone on this team was good but my picks would be gemini, wong yikbun (hugo) & sun jingdong (ddmorecash). tianyi officially annoys me he needs to go solo

overall stand out list (new names only): skye (tan yitian), liang shiyu, zhong junyi (one), huang xin (eliott), honda hiromu, yang yichen (kingsley), wong yikbun (hugo), sun jingdong (ddmorecash)

this my tentative top 9 HOWEVER this is not a coherent group

doing my best to make a coherent group based on what little i know thus far:

making this made my head hurt, but i do think this is overall a more balanced lineup (that minimizes the sway yuehua will probably have over the group 😶) than the first. the show has too many good vocalists for this to be the lineup & i'd be pretty disappointed on that front. hopefully someone rises to the top vocally soon 🙏 if i had the change to add 3 members they'd be: 1 - another main vocal, 2 - wang kun, 3 - maybe kim dongbin for nore diversity idk

just started asia super young 😅 funny how a show can seem super popular when you're out of the loop but when you finally start watching it's crickets

this is my first time watching a youku show, i like the pacing BUT I HATE the fact that they cut so much from the free eps (free is 1 hr vip is 2.5+ 🫠). so like the irresponsible working adult i am i committed to monthly subscription (that i WILL remember to cancel the day the finale airs 😁). the other thing that i find really disappointing is that free voting on the youku app doesn't count towards their rank, it's just for extra promo 🫠 apparently you need to pay separately through their site or have a weibo associated with a mainland # (acc to fans based in hk w weibo accounts they can't even vote. when the show is filming in hk. and conducted half in canto.)

but i WILL be tuning in even though im desperately confused about everything. i watched eps 1 - 3 using the free version so im gonna do a quick recap and hopefully start catching up with the extra content tomorrow 🙏

ults: gemini (hoàng huệhùng/huang huixiong) & albert (aihe)

these two...how could you not say cunt. gemini is a 99 liner from vietnam, a short king, his nose is pierced, his dancing is clean, and his vocals are great. does he speak chinese? no. but does he serve face? like his life depends on it (because it does). he's already on my list of survival show contestants who will live on in my brain in perpetuity. aihe is the other main slayer from the same audition group (medusa). just look at him. he walked out and i went bitch???? he's like if hu yetao and xue bayi had a baby that was mad as hell. he's an 03 liner from xinjiang, pretty good vocals, and great dance skills. had to use that shitty laptop pic bc it just radiates his whole vibe.

i like you!: vic (zhang shengxi), orenda (shuhao), walker (wang kun), kong sonhei (jiang xinxi), & karl (ting tzelong)

vic is a 2000 liner & and member of enone. his rank is so oddly low bc he gets pretty good screentime and is very talented?

shuhao is a 2000 liner. he wasnt a pick until he did his solo rap but he's the best rapper, undisputed, on this show. plus he composed & produced & wrote & arranged their group's whole audition song? kingie.

walker is an 05 liner with a musical theatre background. to me he has a very broadcaster type face - kind and open. i noticed him mostly for how he was taking care of his younger audition partner, it was very very cute 🙄(🥹).

xinxi is an 02 liner & a member of the yuehua brigade. member of the bg boyhood (all of whom are competing) and i believe the theme song center. but more importantly, he's my birthday buddy!😁🥳 i'll admit to noticing him first bc of the bday thing - i was actually pretty unimpressed by boyhood's audition. still, he's a very good/solid boy group member to have.

karl (ting tzelong) is a 97 liner with roots in canada & hong kong. he's a Fantastic singer and was the runner up in the mr. hong kong contest? don't think he can dance but that voice, singing or speaking...

i know you & ur fun: ollie

ollie (06, under yuehua) was on boys planet so im very familiar with him (side note but this show has so many former iqiyi show contestants but none from tencent 😭). honestly he's not a pick for me but i like his energy, he's a great variety member. also i don't want to see him lose so 😭 that said i've always thought he raps like he's reading a children's book but he's graduated to slam poetry🎉

hmmm: sky (zhao tianyi)

so. sky's audition was iconic. this 14 y/o kid sang, rapped, played the piano, synths, talkbox, did streetdance, and jumped into a split. he clearly loves music & is very intense about follow this passion. but 1) he's 14. 2) he clearly wants to be a soloist, thus far i can't see a single team player bone in his body. these things combined have put him lower on my list (i especially didn't really care for how he interacted with gemini during the team selection but we'll see if that continues in ep 4). but he's here currently for his talent.

keeping an eye out: archie (sin ching fung), hugo (wong singcheuk) & service (sun xiaowei)

archie (98) is a singer, he sings! but honestly so many ppl on this show are good & he can't really dance so...we'll see

hugo (03, apex member) ...in his audition he looked like a member of my token bg POW lol. he has a lot of potential i just need to see more

Your bangs were already sticked to your face, your hair made a mess. You had been practicing for hours straight. You hadn't had a proper meal in the whole day, only a few of those energy bars they had in the vending machine. You felt exhausted, but above that you felt you could do better than that. The rest of the group had left a couple of hours before, it was already 3:45 in the morning. You finished the whole choreography one more time before you stopped to take a gulp from your energy drink. You heard steps approaching you and turned back, thinking it might be one of the other trainees. - Why are you still here? It's too late, you should be sleeping. - Mentor Zhengting... I'm still practicing because I still can't do it perfectly.- you were still trying to recover your breath. The concerned look Zhengting gave you made you feel kind of guilty. You admired him so much since you first saw him on PD101, and now you had joined the show, with him as a mentor. - Look, I can't tell you not to do that because I've done it myself a lot. But you should take good care of yourself, okay? Have you eaten? - Not yet... - Just as I thought.- He sighed.- Come with me. You followed him and he got some food for you from the kitchen. - It's actually forbidden to enter the kitchen, so don't tell anyone.- He giggled. And you swore to god he has the most precious smile you've ever seen. Like maybe you didn't just admire him as a mentor. - Do you do this often? - You lifted your head to look at him, with a spoonful of rice in your mouth.- Train until late, I mean. The girls went crazy and you just smiled back at him. He gave you a little speech to motivate you and you all thanked him for his kind words. A minute or so after that you were called to perform. The performance went smoothly. Even though you were really nervous at first, thinking about the mentor's words calmed you down. But even though you did your best, you were eliminated in that round, right before the final one. You were okay with it though, you knew it didn't mean you weren't good enough, but you would still work as hard as you could to debut someday soon. Zhengting approached you after the recording finished. - I'm sorry you didn't make it, Y/n. I wanted to tell you that your performance was my favorite, you did really well. - It's okay, mentor, I'll work hard to debut in my company. - You don't have to call me mentor now, just Zhengting. You nodded smiling. - So... actually I was hoping that, now that I'm not your mentor anymore maybe we could... go out someday? - Go out like... a date?- You looked at him in surprise. - Yeah... if you want to, of course. - I'd love to.- You looked at him, smiling. - Okay, great.- He smiled back. hey! i’m a new follower and i’ve just recently been getting into cpop. what are some songs you recommend and groups/artists to listen to for newbies? thanks!

aaahhh!!! hiiii!!!  welcome!  i hope you don’t mind that i published this! well, depending on how long you’ve been following me you probably have seen posts about my favorites in cpop rn so i am going to split it into two categories: groups and artists.  there will be some overlap between these two and even within different groups.  there’s probably a post out there about how everyone in cpop knows each other and honestly i don’t doubt it.

this got longer than i expected, i am so sorry, so i put it under a “read more”

the tl;dr of it is there are kpop artists who are chinese who put out chinese music either solo or with their groups, idol producer and youth with you are 2 idol maker competition shows that many of today’s better known cpop artists have been in, there is currently a ywy season going on right now for creating a girl group and you can find my posts about it under the tag “ywy” or “youth with you”.  these posts are specifically about the girls and my reactions to the episodes.  i mention it at the end of the post as well but my “cpop” tag may be of help as well

Groups:

Nine Percent -> first idol group put together at the end of Idol Producer, Cai Xukun was the leader and I love him a lot

Nex7 (also known as Next or Yuehua’s Next) -> there are three members who overlap with 9%: Zhu Zhengting, Fan Chengcheng, and Justin Huang

Unine -> second idol group put together at the end of the first season of Youth With You; Yao Mingming, Li Zhenning, and Jiayi are my bias line from them

Uniq was good but also dabbles in kpop as well so if you’re looking for a nice transition group I would go with that

Super Junior-M was the Chinese subunit of Super Junior

WayV is the Chinese subunit of NCT

Oner is good

Mr. Tyger has my beloved Jiayi as one of the members and their MVs are so visually interesting

Artists:

Since 9% has disbanded, all of the members went on and did some solo things.  Again here I will mention Cai Xukun, but Lin Yanjun, Wang Ziyi, Chen Linong, Justin, and Zhengting all also have really good solo stuff

Zhoumi is one of my favorite ballad singers for cpop

Z.Tao is good and his song “Beggar” is my current song on repeat

Kris Wu has some really really good songs in both English and Chinese

Luhan is incredible and his falsettos really are something else

Zhang Yixing, aka Lay of EXO, is probably one of my favorite cpop artists both musically and choreographically

Jeffrey is an artist I haven’t listened to a lot but the stuff of his I’ve heard is good

Jolin Tsai has some of the most interesting and amazing music i love her a lot

Ella Chen is one of the mentors on this current run of Youth With You and was part of the girlgroup S.H.E but her solo music is good as well

I also like Eric Chou

9m88 is more jazzy in music but she’s got an interesting voice and also did a cover of the City Pop classic “Plastic Love” which I love

If you are more used to kpop, there are plenty of songs by the original groups that are in Chinese; Exo was really good at having a lot of songs in Chinese done because in their original debut lineup they had 4 Chinese members

this is arguably one of the most popular posts i’ve made so far on this blog and the playlist that came out of it but we love Cpop Thot Bops

this definitely seems like a lot but honestly i’m just trying to give you as many options as you can have because of the different styles of the artists in the industry.  there are also a ton of OSTs for cdramas that are done by members of groups or by solo artists.  I personally like Bi Wenjun’s songs for the drama “Sweet Tai Chi”!

There are also plenty of cpop blogs out here but the ones that i would recommend are @zhuzhengtngs, @9toawaken, @princekunge, @baobeejun, @ruangz, @kunxcii, and @lovleez !  am i biased bc i’m friends with them and they bully me in our groupchat daily?  perhaps.  and of course I’m always here if you have questions, want recommendations, or want to scream about what X person wore on 160319 or whenever date :p

also if you want more background on Nine Percent, Nex7, or Unine, you can find Idol Producer and Youth With You on YouTube.  Through them you are also able to find a lot of incredible rappers, dancers, musicians, and singers that i didn’t have the space for in this !  I am sorry for how long this is and I’m wrapping it up I swear but you can check my “cpop” tag as well as anything related to cpop will be there and that can give you more background on certain people (cough cai xukun cough) and perhaps enable you to develop your bias or help figure out who you want to listen to.  also the ppap stage of idol producer was the best one dont listen to anyone else who says it wasnt :D

that’s true i suppose i am biased bc i already know his talent so when i’m rewatching the audition it’s like,, how did he get F?? but it did allow him to shine when he rose to B so can’t be too mad also have you watched the new season at all?

my thoughts on this take two! bc it didnt post the first time fml

a point i forgot to make in my first reply to you was the fact that not only was he timid and shy, he was also being outshined by his fellow members. you have to remember that during this time period, justin and zhengting still had their pd101 hype (3/5 of the mentors were from kpop based groups so maybe they had some previous knowledge of their abilities), zeren was a former SM trainee (lay even recognized him so he was also aware of his abilities) and he also had to go against chengcheng (the brother of china’s biggest actress and even with his D rank, everyone was paying that much more attention to him). in the yuehua audition, he, xinchun and wenjun didn’t stand a chance at ranking high because the mentors probably didn’t pay them much mind. that’s why when quanzhe was on his own in F rank (along with xinchun), he was finally allowed to show what he was made of.

and then we all cried when he moved up to b rank :(

in all honesty, i didn’t keep up with idol producer s2. i only watched the clips of minghao since he’s my bias. i didn’t want to get involved with the show again just to have a repeat of season one. as for this newest season with xukun, i haven’t watched either. iqiyi has posted the first episode in every language except for english lol and the only clips i can find are video edits of lisa & xukun.

have you watched any of the new season? i heard this season has a contestant named juicy. i stan her. idk what she looks like or what her talents are but with a stage name like that, she must debut.
