☕️ Dumbledore! Just your personal thoughts and feelings
I view Dumbledore as a morally grey wartime leader.
Dumbledore's actions can be traced back to his Situationship with Grindelwald, where they shared a belief in the "greater good."
Although Dumbledore later rejected and regretted Grindlewald, the philosophy somewhat lingered in his approach to defeating Voldemort. He often made choices that sacrificed individual well-being to achieve a larger objective.
Dumbledore's unilateral decisions highlight the burdens of his power. He makes choices without external input, driven by a deep-seated belief in his own judgement, and withholds vital information from even his closest allies. He controls the narrative and the actions of others by dictating what they know and when. This is exemplified in how he manages the prophecy.
Another facet of Dumbledore’s character is his role as a protector and mentor to the marginalised. He has a distinct knack for bringing outcasts into the fold, often those shunned by society for their backgrounds or afflictions. By offering them positions and a sense of belonging at Hogwarts, Dumbledore not only fosters a sense of loyalty and devotion but also creates an environment where these characters can thrive despite societal prejudices.
However, this seemingly benevolent trait intertwines with his more machiavellian tendencies. The deep-seated devotion that Dumbledore inspires in these marginalised people can sometimes appear to be unwittingly fostered for the 'greater good.' This raises ethical questions about whether his actions are truly altruistic or partly utilitarian, using the strengths of these devoted followers in his broader strategy against Voldy.
Having said this, his character is enriched by his self-awareness and capacity for regret. He is acutely conscious of his moral failings, such as his association with Grindelwald and the consequences that led to Ariana's death.

Plot Bunny: Dumbledore doubts his ability to keep Harry safe in Hogwarts after the events of the Triwizard Tournament and with Harry's burgeoning psychic connection to Voldemort, and thus sends him to Nurmengard to hide with Gellert Grindlewald.
I cannot possibly describe how much I want a grandfather/mentor relationship between Gellert and Harry. I want it so bad. For *reasons*.
Partially this is wish fulfillment -- it feeds the "mentorship role from older Dark Wizard" that Voldemort frequently takes up in a number of fics, but a but more realistically since Grindlewald has never killed anyone Harry loves, as well as giving some of that beloved Grindledore angst with a side order of repentance.
Grindlewald at the start of the story is powerless, infirm, and has largely been abandoned by even his guards as the years dragged on and most of those who lived through his reign of terror fade into memory. Only Nurmengard remains, the castle itself caring for him, but never allowing him to leave. This is an old man waiting to die.
Enter Harry, a walking, talking connection to the only person Grindlewald has ever loved, now facing a Dark Wizard of his own. It's enough to rouse something within him -- maybe not the will to live, persay, but for the first time in decades he finds himself interested in pushing death a little further away.
And this is where Harry -- hot-headed, lonely, and terribly charming even when he doesn't mean to be -- comes in, because Harry is fundamentally someone it's hard not to love. Harry is someone who finds strength through love, while Grindlewald was damned by it, and that contrast has a lot of potential there.
I think as a plot device it makes sense for Dumbledore to send Harry away if the expulsion at the beginning of his Fifth Year goes through. He's confident about being able to keep him safe at Hogwarts, but not anywhere else as much. I imagine Petunia and Vernon all but throwing the boy out of the house during the school year rules out the blood wards, and keeping him at Grimmauld full-time is a security breach waiting to happen.
Not sure what ships (if any) would appear aside from the canon Grindledore, but this is definitely one that's been bugging me for a while so I'll drop it here and maybe do something with it later.
#plot bunny#harry potter#gellert grindelwald#harry potter & gellert grindlewald#the dark wizard mentorship we were all secretly looking for#spoiler alert the only person looking for this was me#Nurmengard vacation house: stay for a lifetime!

You're not actually changing my opinion on your logical contortions here. You're piling assumptions on top of more assumptions to justify your original assumptions.
For example, you're assuming a) Dumbledore actually had a romantic relationship with Grindlewald, instead of just being in love with him. Last time I checked, JKR hadn't confirmed a relationship. That was mostly shippers.
And then you're assuming Rita learned about that relationship.
"Hey, this famous dead guy was friends with an infamous terrorist, and he was mentoring this important celebrity youth" is going to ring alarm bells, whether or not sexuality is involved. It might make some people think Dumbledore's defeat of Grindlewald was simple backstabbing for his Albus' benefit, instead of Dumbledore realizing they were wrong.
Ah, yes, the real problem when a muckracking tabloid journalist implied Dumbledore was a pedo teacher was the “gay” part.
Not the part where it was a blatant, horrible lie told to sell papers that could’ve ruined his reputation.
The gay part.
Honestly, I’m not even sure the public knew Dumbledore was gay at that point. If not, this argument is even stupider.

Hi! I really like your Ninjago PG-13 AU, you're doing awesome 💖 I was just curious that, if it were a TV show, who you would cast for each part?
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying it!!!!!
Hmmm.... Usually when I imagine the cast I see it as more of an anime with voice actors, all the same that is a really fun question.
And if any of these actors or actresses are in any kind of trouble, I deeply apologize 🙏
Also, this is going to be long because I'm going qith the easiest characters to cast to the hardest
Right off the top of my head is Sarah Paulson as Misako because the woman SLAYED in AHS and Ratched because she already has the 'way' of playing a smart and vulnerable character, which I accidentally made in the rewrite😅 And don’t tell me you'd get a pit in your stomach if you heard her as Misako screaming for Lloyd; the woman has phenomenal range.
Next is Johnny Depp as Pythor for because of his work as Jack Sparrow and Grindlewald. Plus, I think it'd be cool to hear/see him be a cunning snake man.
Next villain is Jason Davis Frank as Garmadon because he used to play Tommy Oliver in the Power Rangers series. Idk, I just find it oddly symbolic and ironic because the guy who played the hero is now playing a villain.
I'm taking a page out of the movie's book and casting Jackie Chan as Wu. He was hilarious in Shanghai Knights and I can see him being the serious and funny wise old mentor of the group.
I don't know how many people will get a kick out of this, but I'd cast either David Tennant or Ralph Fiennes as Skales. David Tennant because of his role as Crowley in Good Omens and Ralph Fiennes because he dies a good snake-y voice.
Skalidor, the Constricti general gets the actor Benedict Cumberbatch because of hiw low his voice is. And don’t tell me there are communities that would LOVE an evil snake general that constricts his opponents to kill them that has the voice/face of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Nya, like Pythor, is a tie between Maise Williams and Sadie Sink. The two have the teenage sister attitude down to a T.
Jay has two picks: either John Mulaney or Ethan Nestor-Darling(Crankgameplays). Idk, the two have such 'Jay' energy and it sticks.
Cole would be voiced by Thomas Sanders because he has a low voice, his work on his series Sandrrs Sidea and other projects is PHENOMENAL, and I can see him playing the 'big brother' or leader of the group and still have the range to have a good time, like he has the low, authoritive voice, but he still laughs and goofs around like a kid and be taken less as a threat because he has the voice for it.
Zane has three very interesting fan casts: Matthew Gray Gubler, Wi Ja-Hoon, and Bryan Dechart. Matthew Gray Gubler because he's played a smart character in Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, who is also very talkative. Wi Ja-Hoon from Squid Game does not speak english. I don’t know if he'd learn more, but Zane doesn't talk much, but when he does I always imagine he just sounds DIFFERENT from the rest, like he's either from somewhere else or from someWHEN else. Idk, whatever makes Zane even more likable and different and more of a fan favorite.🤷😅🤣😂 Byran Dechart because I just find it funny and Inlove Connor💜
Kai has a few options. Evan Peters because of his roles in AHS and Bad Boy Charm, Cole Sprouse because of his work as Jughead in Riverdale and Will in 5 Feet Apart, Chase Stokes from Outer Banks because he has very 'Kai' energy, as in he cares about 'his people' and will do anything to protect them.
Lloyd has a few interesting options as well: David Franco(who voiced him in the movie), Ruby Pankow, who is also in Outer Banks, and David Mazouz, who played Bruce Wayne in Gotham. Franco already has the experience AS Lloyd, I feel like Ruby and Chase would play off each other well as surrogate brothers, and Mazouz does an amazing job at playing a new hero in a world that demands you to step up or step as far away as you can.
These are all my picks for my fan cast! Kinda long, I apologize, but I hope that answers your question!😁

Can you answer 29, 39 and 49?? :)
Thanks friend!!
29 Favorite villian?
Ok, brace yourselves, this might turn into a rant.
It’s Grindlewald.
I knew literally nothing about him when I saw Fantastic Beasts ( I got half blood prince spoiled for me in 2nd grade and thought ‘ welp. that’s a pretty big spoiler, I don’t need to read any of the books now’ so I didn’t actually read any of the harry potters until high school) and after I saw it I poured through Deathly hallows looking for more information. And then seeing Crimes of Grindelwald was absolutely amazing! he’s that villian that you hate but they’re so good at being bad, and then they make some good points but you’re like wait no. no I’m not supposed to agree with you! Johnny Depp did an absolutely AMAZING job bringing this character to life, as he does with all his characters. I don’t know how he doesn’t have an oscar yet and I still don’t get why Warner bros. fired him and I just *frustrated scream into pillow*
ok, rant over. Sorry about that
39 Wierdest character concept
ummm the one that comes to mind right now is for DnD. I’ve got a monk whose parents were both warlocks with different patrons that both promised their firstborn in exchange for powers. Well, now both parents are dead and there’s this odd custody battle between the dieties while the monk just wants to get away from it all.
49- Character you would want to be friends with, if they were real
Character from movie/ tv- Newt Scamander. I relate to him so much and I think that he’d be the coolest friend.
Character I’ve created- There’s this kind of mentor character named Leander that can shapeshift, is super witty, seems chill but is always internally screaming.
Yeah that’s about it. Thanks again!

Do you know any good AU first year fics for Harry Potter or even fics that gets him to take control of his life? I don't mind bashing fics if it is well reasoned. Crossovers are perfectly fine as well. I'm craving please.
The first one that came to mind was Harry Potter and the Gift of Memories by Engulfing Silence, but that’s a fairly popular one, so you might have already read that.
Lemme scroll through my saved folder and followed list.
There’s The Pureblood Pretense by murkybluematter, another popular one, and it’s the first in a series that spans several years, starting in first. Fem!Harry, AU living Lily and James, a political fic, and it’s very much Harry taking control of her life.
A New Chance Continued by pyrodaemon. It’s old and has been discontinued, but it’s a good time-travel fic. Has an interesting take on magic, and delves into the backgrounds of some characters before it was made canon-uncompliant from Pottermore info
A Study in Magic by Book of Changes. Crossover with BBC Sherlock. Fem!John and Sherlock raising Harry as their child.
A Study in Magic by Vixit. Crossover with the OG Sherlock Holmes series. Sherlock raises Harry who then goes on to deduce his way through first year.
Behind the Veil by StycianLeo. Harry travels to another dimension and takes over his female counterpart. It’s very AU, Lily and James lived, Harry has a little sister, Grindlewald mentored Voldemort who secretly works at Hogwarts as Tom Riddle, and Dumbledore’s side is not that great either. Fantastic read even though it’s been on hiatus for years.
Better Be Slytherin! by jharad17. I never finished it, but it does take place in first year, though I don’t think it counts as Harry taking control of his life. He tries at least?
Other People’s Magic by Mr. Ragtop. It’s been abandoned, but the story is great, and it has a really interesting take on magic.
Poison Pen by GenkaiFan. Not a first year fic, but very much Harry taking charge of his life.
The Thief of Hogwarts by Bluminous. Very much an adventure fic, lots of laughs. Harry does what he wants and benefits so much from his mischief. It’s abandoned, but still a pretty long read.
The Magic of Deduction by AlexisJames92. crossover with BBC Sherlock. Basically, the main cast of Sherlock died and are reincarnated as Harry and his friends. Actually a really good read despite my shitty summation. It’s also a Ron/Harry fic, with John Watson as Ron and Sherlock as Harry. Starts a bit before first year, and continues on, but a good chunk of it is first year.
Again and Again by Athey. You’ve probably read this – Athey’s work is in a league of their own – but I couldn’t not suggest it. Time travel, Master of Death shenanigans, Harry giving no shits what anyone wants from him – he is utterly in control of every aspect of his life.
Harry Potter: Dark Memories by Blueowl. Very much an AU first year. Time travel with Snape in this one, and quite a bit of change to canon as well. I forcibly made myself forget the epilogue because it ruined the rest of the story for me, but other than that, I love it.
A Jaded Family by GiuliaZe crossover fic with Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Features a Fem!Harry post Hogwarts and war retrieving Teddy from a kidnapping and learning about her mafia relation. Still on-going, but very good.
Grim Grinning Ghosts by oniforever. Has both zombie- and ghost-Harry.
Please, let me know if you’ve already read any of these or even all of them. I can recommend more from my AO3 following list.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, a moratorium
okay, so here’s the thing: this movie is dumb. like really, really, stupid. we’re good? we’re good.
I feel like I should preface this with a couple of reference points to how my taste in movies works:
1. I watched the crimes of grindelwald, possibly one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life
2. I actually liked X-men: the Last Stand
which i guess is fitting, because i did enjoy this movie! however, the bar it had to hurdle was “be slightly better than fantastic beasts and where to find them: the crimes of grindlewald” which is, uh, about as low as you can go.
THINGS THAT DID NOT WORK
as @wellntruly mentioned in her review, this film made like zero choices. absolutely none at all. All of the absolutely nonsense batshit s x-men decisions were missing.
complete lack of 90s clothing or references
quicksilver didn’t even really GET a fun slo-mo scene
there was one absolutely egregious use of a space helmet i guess, because apparently no one in this film is clear on how space works
also a shocking lack of gay subtext or text, which is definitely related to this issue, because they are cowards afraid to do anything fun.
their use of their one allotted “fuck” fell flat
the first half was just super slow
the frigding
oh, the fridging. raven was killed in like, the first twenty minutes? so hank and magneto could be mad for a hot sec
to be fair i’m sure jennifer lawrence wanted out of this role
there was a cool poc lady but she died unceremoniously
jean dies but i’m not gonna count that as fridging because, a) this is the x-men, b) this is jean grey, and c) this is (supposedly) the dark phoenix saga
jessica chastain was apparently played by a lab-grown clone of herself grown
i’d say the characterization and motivations were all over the place, but really...when hasn’t it been.
was worse than usual tho
not a single decision made by any character made sense, but that’s not really why i watch these movies anyways.
THINGS I REALLY ENJOYED
the cool jackets
hans zimmer’s score
i’ve realized that musical scores are a really big factor in if i like a movie, so just know that
the COOL light effects
honestly, everyone was just acting their little hearts out? (except jessica chastain)
sophie turner is just....luminous. good job.
michael fassbender and nicholas hoult are about 10 orders of magnitudes better than this script ever deserved
they made me feel a full range of human emotions
raven’s character re-design!
thank GOD there was not a SINGLE nude scene
also i liked this hair, it was fun!
i actually really like her role in this movie- i liked her as a mentor figure, and as a friend to jean, and i liked that she always questioned prof x.
professor x continues to be obviously terrible with children and also kinda a dick
yes this is a positive.
his first scene involves meeting a young jean grey and then suddenly realizing he has to break the news of her parents’ death to her. CLASSIC CHARLES XAVIER.
also a solid half of the characters call him out on being a dick which was cathartic
that fight scene on the train? you KNOW i LOST my MIND
also when it was revealed hank was the new head of the school
and also when magneto showed up in paris to challenge professor x to a game of chess
i actually thought the ending was genuinely moving?
i also thought this was a slightly better adaptation of the dark phoenix saga than what the last stand did
it’s x-men: the last stand if it had been made with the absolute bare minimum of 2019 morals and social awareness, if you will.
okay, so this movie has even LESS meat to it than the other x-men movies. there’s pretty much nothing there. HOWEVER, if you squint really hard, there are some genuine relationships. and if you squint even harder, there’s a throughline about how accepting and embracing your emotions instead of repressing them makes you more powerful and whole
anyways i had fun watching this movie. definitely not the worst thing i’ve ever seen.
#OPINIONS#i honestly like this film! i#i mean it was terrible#but i did like it!#idk why i titled this 'a moratorium' tho#it just seemed fitting#personal#xmen#x-men#dark phoenix

TBH the only way I would accept the whole "Nagini is actually a human woman" thing was if she had been able to turn human again in the books and be some sort of mentor to Harry. Heck, get rid of her plot in Crimes of Grindlewald and instead make her curse to be partially or completely Voldemort's fault.
What you don't do is give a cool murder-snake an entire backstory that is completely irrelevant to the main story. You don't need to make the Asian woman in your prequel movie also the main series villain's pet just to make your audience care about her, JKR. Asian women existed in the 1920's, you don't need to justify her existence.

Dumbledore, Grindlewald, David Yates, JK Rowling and the issue with the use of words. Part 4
(To save people from the issue of reading this on Mobile I’ll break it up.)
(Part 1 here, Part 2 here, Part 3 here)
Now, I’m going to go into part 4 of this, and I really want people to listen.
Fantastic Beasts is a movie series written in the way one would write a book series, that connects the idea of a mystery and possible suspence period piece, with the idea of the Hero’s journey for Newt Scamander. JKR is writing this, and probably the rest of the series of movies, as she would a book, save for the fact that it’s in script form and you have it played out on screen over having to wait years to read it.
Now for some this idea is horrible, because a book can give you time to cover a lot of story beats and really dig into the meat of a character. However, visually a movie can show an audience what sort of creature she’s thinking of as well as allow people to connect emotionally to the character, and, on top of all of this, make it easier to tell this sort of story.
Newt is not Harry, and will never be. He is an adult with a lot of confidence issues and some social issues. He’s nervous, shy, and unsure of himself. And Yes Harry was a lot of that too, however, as a boy growing through his teen years into an adult we saw him change and gain confidence through friends that he gained. Newt clearly didn’t have those till he met Tina, Jacob, and Queenie. He was, like Ron, pushed to the back and overshadowed by his brave and brilliant wartime hero brother, Rolf, and, as such, he’s built himself up to be, not worthless, but rather inept at believing in himself. It takes getting to know Jacob and seeing someone who finds his world so fascinating and impressed by what he loves that finally starts to pull him out of the blanket he’s wrapped himself in so long.
Newt is a different sort of hero, as many articles have suggested, and to not give him the time to experience his own journey would be a slap in the face to the character. In Newt’s case you have the start of his journey from Dumbledore going to him and offering him a simple quest to go to the states. Once there he’s met allies that help him to conquer his own fears and prove to be a heroic type of person, even though he doesn’t look like it.
Newt is not the good looking Harry, he’s a gangly young man that has no clue what he’s doing in a lot of cases and prefers to hang out with his animals then go off on adventures.
This is why I honestly think she’s making sure that Dumbledore stays a mentor. His presence can overwhelm a scene, as we’ve seen in the other movies and books. We know he’s powerful and time taken away from Newt can, in fact, make it harder to sell this sort of character as a hero. An example of a movie that screwed this up, but was still a good movie in it’s own right, was Tales of Earthsea. In this case the main hero of the story, an older man who was a magic user, was pushed to the back of the story while the young Heroic prince became the hero of the movie. Problem, the prince is a one time character (I think I haven’t read very far in the series yet) and pretty much doesn’t play a role outside of this book. The side characters though, do, and are characters that continue through the stories and play significant roles in many books.
The issue here is that a lot of people went to get the series and came to a rude awakening when they realized that “Hey Prince guy is not the lead, what the hell is this?”
Now if you think about that, why would the author want to put a mentor character above the lead? It would make no sense, especially given the mystery laid out for us to try to piece together.
Credence is a LeStrange, Leta is his brother through their father. We know that her Uncle on her mother’s side is looking for him, and we know, thanks to the trailers’ that there’s hints of Leta working with Grindelwald. We also know that Rolf is going to marry her, that Newt once was in love with her enough to still have her picture, and that there’s probably a triangle brewing there. We are hinted that Grindelwald wants Credence for something, and that the title hints at his actions being devastating. We also know that, because of the title, the Hallows are involved, and that Dumbledore is sending Newt out to do work for him, possible to find the location of the mirror. We also know that he comes to France to talk with him, and that Tina and Jacob, and Queenie end up there as well.
Given that this is a mystery, and again the likelihood is that Credence and Ariana share the same problem, we’re not going to get those pieces right away.
So how does that all connect to what Rowling said?
Well as an author you can’t give away you’re whole story in one go. Showing the tension between Dumbledore and Grindelwald early on in a mystery gives a way a LOT of what is going to make up the plot. We, the readers, already have some knowledge of their history, but we don’t have it all, and the only one that we can rely on for that info is a slightly bitter younger brother who may be placing blame upon his brother.
So it’s probable that she’s holding back a lot in this story to give more time for us to learn as Newt is. We’re at least a few steps ahead of him due to our knowledge, but we have to remember as viewers that we’re learning as he learns. Newt is our PoV in this story and because he knows nothing about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, we know nothing about those two. Even if we think we do.
The authors role, even in a screenplay, especially one that will feed into the next, is not to give everything away in one go. You have to build when you’re going to have an epic battle between two people, and while the tension between the two will be low, it probably will still be there and it will start Newt looking into things. Can he trust his mentor, what is he hiding from him, etc. Newt’s going to go through the same thing Harry went through, and it’s going to hurt. Maybe more so than Harry, as Harry had others to lean on, Newt…is only starting to have those. So in the end it makes sense for her to point out that she’s got plans and not to freak out over what Yates says. It doesn’t mean that we’re not going to get to their relationship. It just means that it’s going to have to take time to get there and build on things going on in the story that affect Newt and how Dumbledore’s relationship with Grindelwald and Leta and Newt’s are going to be paralleling one another. We’re probably going to see Leta use the same sort of tactics on Newt that Grindelwald used on Dumbledore at some point and having that shown, you’ll get the idea of what sort of man Grindelwald truly is. Or we’ll see him do it to Newt, making him question who he can trust.
If we expect to see everything laid out before us, it will just crash and burn and make the journey weaker and less engaging because we’ll know both endings then. We already know how Dumbledore and Grindelwald end up, we just don’t know how they get there. Rushing a mystery destroys that tension, and honestly, who wants the ending to a story before we even get clues about how it began?
I hope this helps people gain a better understanding of things and possibly makes people pause before lambasting the crew of Fantastic Beasts the crimes of Grindelwald.

Day 15 of #28daysofblackcosplay is to Leta Lestrange from Fantasic Beasts Crimes of Grindlewald. My first Harry Potter/ Fantastic Beasts cosplay. Before Leta there wasn’t many characters (besides Luna Lovegood! Ravenclaw Pride) that I connected with in the Wizarding World Universe. That is until Crimes of Grindlewald came out and I immediately connected with Leta Lestrange: deep, secretive, complex beautiful and tormented. And Slytherin is my secondary house. Though every outfit she wears in the movie is made by my mentor, the great Colleen Atwood. The wine colored dress was always my favorite. Finding a fabric that matched it not only in color and texture was HARD. But when I found it I made that dress in under 3 days so it would be ready for Wonder Con. Granted, I need to spruce it up (wig too) and I only wore it that one time I’m ready to wear it again. Also, @ me but she has one of the prettiest wands in the Fantastic Beasts series. Also also, I still ship her and Newt. Extra @ me.(yes, I know who he ends up with 🙄). My hope is that we may see more of her in the future… Cosplay made by me As a Black cosplayer, I’ve long since realized that black cosplayers in the community don’t get there just dues and appreciation for the work they do. We are always called “variants” or “(insert character name) if they were black”. I think it’s time we break that negative stigma and show appreciation for cosplayers of color. Hi! Have you seen the macross theory? Basically the showrunners love macross and they reference it a lot in vld! The main love triangle in macross is between a pilot, an idol and his superior officer/rival. The guy ends up with his rival! And this relationship parallels the k/alluralance love triangle
There’s a theory about that already? I just saw a post about it in the klance tag. Ya’ll work fast.
To be fair, love triangles like that are incredibly common amongst all media, but if the showrunners love it a lot, it wouldn’t surprise me that they might take inspiration from it/work references in. That’s what a lot of people do with fiction, nothing wrong with that. Perhaps they did take some inspiration from that for how they were going to portray Keith, Lance, and Allura’s interactions with one another. They certainly didn’t get that kind of interaction from the 80s version of Voltron as far as I know.
Honestly though, I don’t actually rely on how a ship like klance can be compared to outside media much. I know I’ve compared it to Sokka and Suki, and the comparisons to Korra and Asami are all over the place. I can see enough evidence in and of Voltron itself to satisfy me, though finding references and easter eggs are always fun!
A lot of it comes down to similar story patterns. I mean, I could argue that VLD has become very Harry Potter-ish in nature, especially in regards to the ships. It’s not necessarily a good thing in my point of view, because while I was a huge potterhead, I hated how it ended, how the romantic relationships were handled.
I mean, as of right now, Ad@shi was handled the exact same way Dumbledore and Grindlewald were…refernces that could ahve been taken 100% platonically, and then outside confirmation that our great mentor figure is, in fact, gay.
Keith, Lance, and Allura could be treated as a trio here (though we’ve never seen JUST the three of them interaction with one another without others there, which is interesting), with Keith as more of the Harry role, and Lance and Allura as the Ron and Hermione roles. (Leader of the group/the one marked as different, the ‘goofball’, the one that’s very talented with magic and started out as a little bit strict. Hunk and Pidge are like Neville and Luna in this case I guess...actually that really fits too.) But wait Harry ended up with someone and Keith sure as heck isn’t going to end up with one of Lance’s sister’s, but he needs a beautiful, kickass girl that…oh. Wait.
See what I mean? Comparing it to other media, especially if it’s in the same genre, you are actively looking for similarities, and you WILL find them, whether intentional or not.
I’m not saying that the parallels people see to that macross thing isn’t true, or that it wasn’t done on purpose. Maybe they were, especially if the showrunners like it a lot (even more so since it’s about giant robots too). I’m just saying, if you look for connections, you’re almost always going to find them.

10 sentence meme - Dumbledore
Archetype*
They expect Mentor, Chiron, Merlin himself; but all Albus can be is a bundle of flaws and fears he dare not show the world.
Blessing
A kindness, Dumbledore thinks, that at least he never had children to destroy as he had destroyed himself; and forces himself not to think of Harry.
Crack
The ring splits open, the Horcrux within destroyed, and Albus holds his breath—but it does nothing the loosen the stranglehold Tom Riddle’s curse has on him.
Fair
When they’re young, Albus leads his siblings to sneak into a Muggle fair—Ariana in particular is wide-eyed and delighted at the wonders around her—and perhaps that is what leads her, the next day, to seek out their Muggle neighbors in hopes of discovering more clever tricks.
Hide
“Is that all you’re going to do?” Newt—kind, gentle Newt!— snaps, “Hide from Grindlewald like a coward?”; Albus turns away, ashamed.
Mirror(verse)
He doesn’t lie to Harry, not entirely: what he sees is himself holding a new pair of the hideous lumpy socks Ariana would painstakingly knit for him, year after year.
Possession
He has no words for what Gellert does to him — how he compels his thoughts, draws his attention, fixes himself as center of Albus’ world— save that it must be a very dangerous type of magic indeed.
Pun/Wordplay
I open at the close, Albus writes with unsteady hands still unwilling to relinquish the Stone, and hopes it will be enough for Harry to understand.
Vision
For the greater good, he’d wanted once; these days, all he desires is to have his life counted as one spent for good.
Zodiac/Nakshatra**
He must have been picked out for Gryffindor from birth, he thinks ruefully, the Lion shadowing him even then; and when Harry Potter proves to have the same fate, he claps out of sympathy rather than satisfaction.
#harry potter#dumbledore#i find i'm way more sympathetic towards dumbledore than most of hp fandom#i mean he's definitely a disaster of a human being#but he means well#tries to be kind#at least acknowledges his inability to keep from being a manipulative bastard#10 sentence fic#i'm also ignoring what jkr said about dumbledore and the mirror of erised#namely that he lied outright

The Reason I Actually Like Dumbledore
Dumbledore became infatuated with a person who had finally expressed the same passion that he had possessed, an urge to change the world for the better. But that person used him. He used Dumbledore and his quest for good in this world, and it led to the death of his sister Ariana, who saw him as a god.
The guilt Dumbledore had felt was too much to handle. He closed himself off. He refused to put the same amount of trust into another person. He refused to love again. But he did everything he could to help the people Grindlewald had destroyed. The guilt Dumbledore suffered had compelled him to do everything in his power to bring world peace, knowing all the while, that power was a double edged sword. He understood that it was poison to him, but he also understood that through the tragedy he had experienced, he had gained wisdom that few others possessed.
When Harry became a victim of Voldemort’s crimes, a boy who saw him as a man with infinite wisdom, Dumbledore remembered Ariana. He remembered her following his every step with complete admiration. He remembered her hating the fighting that her brothers had caused, and how it had gotten her killed.
But Dumbledore knew that Harry had to die. A boy he loved, a boy who had grown up in a closet, led a neglected life, and wanted nothing more than a family. The same desire Ariana had felt, and the same desire Dumbledore had felt when he looked into The Mirror of Erised. Dumbledore felt a kinship with this boy. He had finally found a chance to to redeem himself, and give this child a happy life, no matter how short it may be.
And so he kept his secrets. He searched for the horcruxes on his own, stalling the inevitable, until it nearly killed him. He waited until the right moment to tell Harry that there was an evil inside of him, and refused to taint the home that Harry had come to love by telling him sooner.
The actions he took to protect Harry were not for the greater good, but to allow a child who had led a difficult life find true happiness within whatever time he had left. He taught Harry that love was paramount; to find happiness in the friends he had made, and to find support in the mentor who cared for him as if he were family. He taught Harry that difficult decisions must be made, and reminded him that love must truimph against hatred and resentment.

Love this meta.
However, I’d argue that Dumbledore isn’t strictly a villain in the traditional sense. Is what he does to Harry wrong? Yes. But, I don’t see Dumbledore so much as a Black’n’White Villain, but more as the calculated, manipulative, War General.
Dumbledore’s POV is the broader picture - the Greater Good as he puts it. As Dumbledore himself more or less says, he focused on the well-being of the entire Wizarding World, not just one boy. The fact that he genuinely comes to care for Harry is what makes their mentor/student relationship so complex. B/c he knows what he’s doing to Harry is wrong, but overall its for the well-being of the Wizarding World as a whole.
The story required SOMEONE to be the character that would make the cold, hard decisions in the face of War; someone who’d be just as decisive, manipulative as Voldemort, but working for the good-guys! Someone who’d have the capability to lead the good-guys, but wouldn’t seek power indefinitely like Voldemort.
Dumbledore does seem to be self-aware enough to not only realize (& regret) what he’s done to Harry, but to also limit his own power. His past relationship with Grindlewald, his estrangement from his brother, the tragic/sudden deaths of his sister & mother all go back to Dumbledore & his own issues with power. He’ll lead the good-guys, but he won’t govern them like a Minister for Magic (remember how everyone though he’d be a good Minister, but couldn’t understand why he never sought to run for office?) & he won’t overlord them like Voldemort. I think this is b/c he knows that kind of power would be too tempting, so he sets his own limits as the Leader of the Light & being a Headmaster.
God, I HATE so much of what Dumbledore does, but I LOVE his complexity & depth!!!!
Just like Slughorn, Albus Dumbledore collects people. Only, instead of focusing on those with influence, he looks to the outcasts.
The expelled half-giant. The young werewolf. The repentant Death Eater.
He protects them and gives them a second chance. All he asks in return is their loyalty.
And, if on occasion he requests that they undertake a certain task, invoking their debt of gratitude - well, that is no more than he is owed.
He once thought to add a certain disowned Black to his collection, but quickly realised his mistake.
Sirius is not an outcast, but a rebel. He knowingly chose his path, and chooses what price he is willing to pay for it. He refuses to be used.
So Albus Dumbledore abandons him.
