I am in the Mood
To Play With My Food.
âA Mood For Food,â Jim Cummings
----------------------------------------------------------
Happy Halloween, everybody! I have a treat for you all: this is the first of five images I got from various artists, for a series I simply like to call âOCs and Inspirations.â In honor of Disneyâs 100th Anniversary, I decided to get some images of some of my major OCs for Twisted Wonderland - the first five introduced in stories - posing with their source inspirations. This first one is made by @hooter-n-company, and shows the first boi I ever made: Nakoda âNakoâ Spivak, based on Kaa from Disneyâs Jungle Book.
Nakoda was not meant to be a major character when I created him, but in the course of writing his introductory piece, âSnake-Like,â I fell in love with what I had created. So, part of the way through, I decided to have him become a student at Night Raven College, and thus allow him the opportunity for more adventures later down the line. He has since become one of my most popular OCs for this universe, even though he honestly hasnât shown up in THAT many stories yet. I think part of the reason for this IS his inspiration from Kaa, since Kaa has become such an iconic character, ESPECIALLY within this particular âkinkdom.â That was part of what I love(d) about Nakoda: heâs a character who allows me to play with Kaaâs tropes and traits - Kaa HIMSELF being a rather overused and slightly overrated figure, in my personal opinion - while putting my own spin on things.
Like Kaa, Nakoda is insatiable in every sense of the word: about the only thing harder to satisfy than his hunger is his seemingly limitless âthirst.â This was meant to be a sort of in-joke for me on how over-sexualized Kaa himself has become in a LOT of places, but it actually works pretty well for Nakoda on a lot of levels, which is why Iâve kept it: for example, I recently was reminded that, in the original Kipling stories, itâs indicated Kaa has had many mates over the years, so even though we can presume the Disney version (being a VERY different character) is not the same, thereâs no reason my guy canât be. Ha Ha.
On a deeper level, what Nakoda takes from Kaa is what I like to describe as âdirectionless control.â Both are characters who seek to control other beings, and enjoy the power they have over their prey, toying with their âplaythingsâ before consuming them. Both enjoy the sensation of being in control of their own little world. HOWEVER, in Kaaâs case, there is no greater cause behind all this: he is ruthless and ambitionless in what he does, recognizing no friends, and with seemingly no other desire than to fill his belly and enjoy everything that comes with that. Nakodaâs great issue is that heâs someone who very much lives in the moment; he doesnât really know what he wants in life, nor how to achieve it: just this vague, nebulous concept of having control and gaining respect and recognition. He, himself, isnât sure what to do with himself or his gifts.
Off the topic of the character, I just want to say this artwork is absolutely freaking spellbinding. Kaa looks magnificent, and NakodaâŚI could comment on a LOT of things in the image that make it so great, butâŚcan we just take some time to appreciate how positively THICC and STACKED this gluttonous hedonist is here? I never want to see Nako with curves ANY smaller than this EVER again, good Lord, they take oneâs breath awayâŚpossibly literally, if he gets those pythons around somebody. He wonât even NEED the coils of his naga form then. >////>
Thank you for your contribution, Hoots! She's actually made one more image for this same series, which will be released in the near future. Look out for the rest of this series of pics starting tomorrow. ;)

This is why Henry James wrote The Beast in the Jungle
"He had justified his fear and achieved his fate; he had failed, with the last exactitude, of all he was to fail of; and a moan now rose to his lips as he remembered she had prayed he mightnât know. This horror of wakingâthis was knowledge, knowledge under the breath of which the very tears in his eyes seemed to freeze. Through them, none the less, he tried to fix it and hold it; he kept it there before him so that he might feel the pain. That at least, belated and bitter, had something of the taste of life."
James, Henry. The Beast in the Jungle (p. 35). Kindle Edition.
not people thinking they can escape heartache. avoiding it at all cost is itself a form of it

Itâs so weird to watch movies like Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, etc and think about how the people who were kids when these came out are what we know now as boomers.
The original voice of Mowgli is still alive and is a boomer. This feels like cursed information somehow.

i think i could design a better death arena for children than those hunger games amateurs.
the whole premise of the games is all pageantry. every year you get a crop of 24 candidates around whom the entire state media apparatus dedicates an entire year to building celebrity narratives. this candidate is the younger sibling of last year's winner - these candidates are young lovers forced to compete - he's smart - she's fast - root for them, care about them, watch them, form opinions on them, bet on them. and then they stick them all in an arena to kill each other, which is a great entertainment premise, except that they make the arenas themselves really boring and generic. ooo, they're in...a forest.
it's not even an interestingly designed forest. imagine if the game designers treated their arena like an actual video game designer treats level design. discrete zones with multiple paths between each room, creative use of lighting to guide players to points of interest, points of interest scattered across the map, discoverable resources hidden to encourage exploration. instead they just have a generic outdoors location and if you get too close to the edge they throw a random fireball at you.
the 75th games are especially bad about this. the arena is laid out radially into 12 wedges, and each hour one wedge becomes especially dangerous in a 12-hour loop. as a mechanic, this is genius. it forces everyone to keep moving, making "survival by hiding" an engaging and tense viewing experience instead of someone sitting in a tree for three days. plus, it encourages players to return to the center of the arena, where travel time between wedges is short, which creates a high-value zone for players to regularly return to and conflict over. in other words, it's a mechanic which incentives players to adopt dramatic, dynamic, exciting behaviors which are entertaining to watch (not to mention it communicates geography to the audience well). but it only incentives those behaviors if the players understand what's happening, and they go out of their way not to tell the players anything! when they figure out what's going on, the showrunners spin the arena to disorient the players, like they're intentionally trying to get them to just. randomly wander the jungle instead.
this isn't even to mention how often they create undramatic, boring deaths. they plant poison berries around the arena. they supply no fresh water and no way to get it. they roll poison clouds over sleeping victims. these happen to work out in the books themselves but you have to imagine that extremely often these just result in players dying unexciting deaths.
the cardinal sin though, of course, is that nothing is done to personalize the arena for the crop of contestants that year. if i'm designing the 75th hunger games and two of my most beloved contestants famously had to cancel their wedding because of a return to the games, i would OBVIOUSLY give them a trail of, i don't know, wild game which conveniently leads directly past a well defended wedding chapel. will they hole up there for a while? hold a mock ceremony for themselves? do or receive ironic violence here? stare wistfully and move on? any of it is better television than getting attacked by generic attack monkeys. you should have a dozen of these things on the map for every single candidate. but the game makers are more interested in doing the same thing every other game has done than in telling a compelling story.
it makes me second guess enjoying the children's murder arenas at all.

I always wanted to see the jungle book world in Kingdom Hearts and got sad when it didn't happened. How are your thoughts about it.
(Also I think your Twst Oc's would be really interesting if they were keyblade wielders. Imagine the banter)
I think the last thing the world needs is any of my bois wielding a keyblade. Absolute chaos would ensue. XD I actually have somewhat mixed feelings about a Jungle Book World in the universe of KH. Would I like to see one? Yes, as a matter of fact; I think it's kind of odd it hasn't happened, and I know at one point they apparently had plans for one but it got canceled at the last minute. However, the issue is that I don't know what you'd DO with that world that hasn't been done with the Pride Lands from KHII or the Deep Jungle from KHI. If it happens, though, I'll be more than glad to see it. :)

Don't do this | a Tom Riddle oneshot
A/N: HII soo this is my first attempt at fics, dont hesitate to say anything, good or bad
k have fun :))
tags: professor tom riddle/professor reader, marriage, angst, horcruxes, sorry if i forget any
wc: 1,584
They've been together, inseparable for 3 years, married for 2 and a half.Â
Tom saw her as an equal as much as someone like him could, she entranced his very being. They talked about subjects he was interested in, in a very objective and intelligent way and he was in awe when he realised he found a match, someone that could understand his fascinations and obsessions. She mostly didn't share them but she was open, he could ask her at 2 in the morning which one of the unforgivableÂ
curses she'd use to get information from someone and she'd genuinely give it some thought.Â
Her fascinations lay more in the zoological department, muggle and magical. She spent hours in forests and jungles, the beings holding her attention for hours. Though, like Tom, she found it hard to open up to people and find like-minded individuals not just regarding creatures but life in general. When he asked to come with her on one of her shorter research-trips, she felt her body and sould levitate. Her greatest wish has always been to grow old with someone loving by her side, someone who she'd love back with her whole self.  Is it him? She hoped so and prayed every night.
He felt the same when she asked about his sketches and faveorite books. Tom Riddle, the usually selfish and greedy man, suddenly interested in the eccentric and always joyful zoology professor? He cursed himself for it, a good 5 months before talking to her for the first time.Â
Now she is staying at his home in the country, a dark penthouse by the sea. To be specific, it is not as dark now, he found that she brought more light into it than any possible lamp.Â
As dreamy as this may sound, but like in every married life, there's always small and petty arguments. Like now, her sitting in bed and reading, not giving him half an ounce of attention while he looked at her from the doorframe.Â
He mentioned horcruxes and the sheer idea of immortality a few times, even on the day they met, but she simply laughed it off. Who would want to be soulles? It seemed absurd.Â
But yesterday evening, when he explained that he wants to go through with his plan of doing so, she couldn't bare to give him more than a gulp and ignorance. He was being mean.
"Apologise, so we can spend at least the evening as a couple. It's cold to sleep without you in my arms." Tom meant it genuinely, but his tone was rough. He didn't understand her problem.
She simply kept on reading, like he didn't even exist. He groaned in annoyance and that did it.Â
"I'm sorry, did my back damage your knife in any way? Do excuse me", he winced and didn't know if it was because of her closing her book shut loudly or her words. Probably the latter.Â
"What do you mean?"
She exhaled in confusion. Did he actually not see the problem?Â
"Tom. You outright told me that you want to split your soul from your body and divide it into 7 different parts. Oh and that you want to live forever. Do you not understand why I'm upset?"
"I'm going to be honest, no, I don't. I find you're being ridiculous, this is a marvelous discovery. "
"Well it is, which on the other hand doesn't mean you have to partake in it!" she says as she sits up straighter in the bed.Â
He sees that and mirrors her reaction, standong up straight and putting his hands in the pockets of his pyjama pants.Â
"Why not? It would help me be more focused on my work and goals and I wouldn't be occupied with unnecessary matters."
"Like me?" His wife didn't know if she regretted saying that, but it came out in the same second he ended his sentence.
Quiet.
"Don't do this. Of course not like you, you matter a huge deal. This would benefit me in every part of my life, I'd be the most powerful wozard that ever lived. There's been noone else more powerful than Death in the history of wizardry and it could be your husband, how are you not the least bit proud?"
"Proud!? You want me to be proud!? What else should I do, throw you a party and congratulate you on a life of pure damnation!?"
She was now standing approximately 1 horizontal man away from him, on a good way to become furious.Â
"Damnation? I hope you mean admiration and being seen with respect, fear and devotion for the rest of time."
"Tommy?" She only called him that when she felt truly helpless or frustrated.
"Yes darling?"
Her voice went almost inaudible, "Where am I in that wonderful way of living you so dream of?"
"By my side." He was sure of that and knew he needed her in this. She'd be his queen in the whole thing.
She breaks into a series of scoffs, some distrustful and some humorous, she found the situation quite absurb. What were they even discussing?Â
"I'll age! I'll age and be old and grey and wrinkly and youll still be thirty! It'll look ridiculous."
Was it embarrassing he hadn't thought of that?Â
"There's plenty of spells to slow down aging." Stupid Riddle.
"Great Havens. If we put that aside, what about your soul? You'll be a shell of the man you truly are. How do you explain that?"
"What? Thats foolish, I'll be myself!"
"You'll be a soulless man! Only goal driven and shutting out everything else! We'll never again talk about life and the universe late at night, you'll never again appreciate me making you tea when you forget the time in your study and we'll never joke about the future and raising an army of baby wizards who we'll name after the imaginary friends we had as children. We'll never go to the city again and you'll never pick out a flower I adore and buy it behind my back to surprise me later although I'd always catch you and we'll never buy cheesy and ironic books for each other in that beautiful old book store we love. Now call me crazy and soft, but I happen to cherish these things."
It was hard to look him in the eyes during saying all that, but she needed to get her point across. She also despised herself for tearing up at this very moment, walking towards him with a pointed finger.
"Tommy, I swore to support and love you in everything you do, but- but taking the soul of the man I love from me-", she hesitated, wanting to stop her voice from breaking and breath from hitching.
He gulped. This was unfair.
"Don't do this."
"-taking that; now that's too much for me. I can't stand behind that."
"You're being cruel."
"I'm not the only one."
That stung, it stung them both at the same time. In the end, they were both just people. She was now standing very few inches infront of him, pointing at his chest, barely holding herself together.Â
"You know what? Do it. I wont stop you or hold you back. That was never my goal."
"I don't understand. Forst you can't stand behind it then you say go ahead."
"If this makes you happy, what I truly doubt, you'll do it without me."
That made his dinner almost come up slightly, it was never an option.Â
"You can't just leave now, you know I love you. Do you not love me anymore? Is that what you're trying to say?", he knew it spounded mean but he hoped to get the point across, he was genuinely wondering.
"Oh don't twist this. I'll always love you with every part of me, body, soul, mind and all, as long as I live, that's why I can't-
that's why I can't watch you do this..."
"So what are you going to do? Just leave? You know you can't do that." He didn't quite believe that she would. Was it cowardly to start a fight rather than comfort her or express his own feelings? He'd have to look into that.
She breathed in, deeper than ever before. It was important that she stays collected now.
"Fine. I'll leave when you do it. That way you wont miss me."
Tom Riddle never got dizzy, he was too aware of his surroundings for that. Yet, now he was holding  onto the doorframe next to him with such strength, that his knuckles turned paper white. He was also afraid to touch her, even breath in her direction, because she might fully disappear already.
"You can't...you can't be serious..." It was more of a whispered plea than a threat.Â
She on the other hand, felt that she needed to touch him or else this stupid boat of too many emotions for both of them would sink to the bottom of the deepest point in the ocean. His cold cheeks warmed at the touch of her palms. In that very moment he also exhaled briefly, still finding deep-rooted comfort in her, even at this time. Her eyes filled with tears, to the brim this time and she ignored them, it was no time to sob now. Her right hand caressed his hair; like it was any other moment they shared before.
"I'm sorry Tommy. I really wanted us to get grey and wrinkly together."
to be continued...

Welcome back to Overcomplicating the Pyrrhian Tribes! This week: the beloved RainWings!!
You know what's up. Joy Ang and Tui are so cool and I am just me.
Details and explanation below!
Otherwise, next week are the chilly IceWings! See you then!!!
More overcomplicated dragons.
I knew the RainWings would be really important, and I think they turned out the best of all the ones I've done. I think they're my favourite because they are basically the perfect mix of extra realism spice without altering Joy's design too much. The SkyWing design is awesome and I love it to bits, but it is one of the two that are the farthest from canon.
As for the RainWing.... I had. So. Much. FUN. I heavily used chameleons and snakes - they're basically the two main species on my research board - but there is a dash of cuttlefish and frilled lizard in there. Where, you ask? Well if you look closely, all over the RainWing are little tiny flecks of darker colour. I found a beautiful reference of a close-up on a cuttlefish eye. Its skin is dotted in thousands of little marks and I thought that would be perfect for the RainWing, who can camouflage just as well as them. I don't know if it's been discussed in canon but I bet they could animate their scales more than just colour shifting - cuttlefish are known for using their rapidly shifting patterns to hypnotize prey. RainWings could do it too, sort of like Ka from Disney's 2D animated Jungle Book.
Speaking of Ka - snakes. I love snakes. The head structure of the RainWing here is very smooth and rounded with muscles based on snakes like the python. I was even going to originally draw them in a venom striking pose and got as far as completing the lineart, but ultimately decided it wouldn't fit the calm portraits of the other tribes.
Will you see it in the future? Hell yeah! Pure, unhinged, magical death spit. Looking at it now I might try to alter it to be a full piece of Glory attacking Scarlet or Crocodile.
In the striking pose you can see the frills much better, but I still took my time on this serene pose (this is where the frilled lizard influence comes in). If you notice that I've drawn every scale (every single scale) then, yes, I am insane. If you didn't know that yet, you know it now. You have to draw guide lines and follow them meticulously while you wonder why you don't make a scale brush, and then cry because you know the randomness and imperfections that come from drawing a thousand circles is how it looks natural. The eye area is actually my favourite part, since drawing dragon eyelids was the original inspiration for doing this. Did I mention that? I wanted to draw eyelids.
EYELIDS.
I digress. Besides the eyelids, I like the frills on the action pose, but this pose is where I like the body scales more. When zooming in on my chameleon colour refs, I noticed the very rhythmical distribution of their scales and figured I would give it a try. They actually do have extra large circular scales along their bodies, which is where I guess the canon RainWing design gets it from. Very clever, Joy!
Anyway, on this version, those small circular scales appear on the face. Not only that, but I added a bit of influence from the snouts of my ref chameleons by extending the nose bridges to wrap around the nose horn. They blend in so seamlessly and that's the reason why I love this design - it's subtle, barely there, mostly Joy but a little extra.
Wow, I talk too much. If you're here, thank you! It's not mandatory to read, but very appreciated. I heard once that visitors at an art gallery look at each piece an average of 2-3 seconds. Or was it 3-6? Idk, but it was shockingly short, and ever since then I've tried to encourage myself to pay more respect to other artists and glean their work for little details I skip after that quick glance. I could talk so much more about these designs but that would be like an hour long video, each, lol. If you have questions about anything, ask away!

A/N: sorry this took so long, but i hope y'all enjoy! Can't wait to hear what you think of it đ
-đş-
âGaz.â
You pretended to still be watching the TV while you called on the sergeant. Up till that point heâd been scrolling mindlessly on his phone, but out of the corner of your eyes you could see him look up. Meanwhile the couple that had been on the screen were still locked in a passionate embrace - giving you a perfect excuse for your question.Â
âYouâve had likeâŚgirlfriends or boyfriends or whatever while youâve been serving, right?â
At first he snorted.Â
Finally you turned around and met his gaze properly, steeling yourself against the grin that was threatening to break out on his face. He quirked his lips for a moment while his eyes remained fixed on you, alight and shining at the idea of you wanting to talk about relationships. It froze you in place for a moment, tense at the idea heâd see right through your reason for asking or had overheard you and Rudy talking throughout the week.Â
âI have. Why you askinâ?â He finally said, actually turning his body fully into the conversation.Â
âI just wondered if it was difficult. You know - to maintain a relationship.âÂ
âItâs not easy. Our jobs make us unreliable, not present - even if weâre in the same place sometimes, tired, grumpy. I reckon my exes could write a book with things to moan about,â he laughed. âTo be fair though I couldâve tried harder with em. I think Iâm just a bit too deep in the job right now to make something properly work outside of all this, you know?â
âSo none of them were other soldiers then?â You asked, tilting your head.Â
âNah. Thatâd be a fuckin nightmare! Imagine trying to find time for each other while youâve got two different fucked schedules, then thereâs having to make sure youâre not in the same units so you donât get hit with punishments for fraternisation and all that shit.â
You instantly turned away and nodded, zoning back in on the TV again. The couple were trading sly smiles while they passed by each other at work, the fuzzy music played softly and sent your ears flicking at the sound. It was your hope that the subject would be dropped then, but even you werenât stupid enough to think that would be that.Â
âWhy the sudden interest in relationships then?â Gaz asked, leaning his arm against the couch and propping his head on his hand.Â
It didnât matter how much you pretended to love whatever the show was, or how far forward you sat, you couldnât evade Gazâs sites. He was there in the corner of your eyes, filling the space like a prowling jungle cat. The only way you were getting out was through the conversation.Â
âWellâŚIâve never really been in a relationship or had the chance to be in one. None of us hybrids really got on that well at Branhaven and I sure as shit wasnât gonna shack up with any of the handlers. Now that I live with you guys though, I thought maybe Iâd have a shot at havingâŚsomething someday,â you said quietly, giving him a brief glance back.
âAnd Iâve just shat all over your parade,â Gaz said, raising his eyebrows.Â
âPretty much,â you answered with a faux huff. âDick.â
Gazâs breathy laugh brushed past your ears. It forced you to turn back to him fully, so that you could properly behold the soft brown hues of his creasing eyes. Even in the dingy space that made up the los vaqueros rec room, his eyes were so warm.Â
âHave you really never been with anyone?â He asked, letting a hint of a frown settle on his face.Â
âNope,â you shrugged.Â
âEver kissed anyone?â
âHmâŚdoes kissing someone on the cheek in nursery count?â
âHell no,â Gaz laughed. âWho were you kissing in nursery anyway you little Casanova?â
âHis name was Shawn. His family was moving away and he was the only other hybrid in my class, so he was the only one I really played with. We both gave each other a kiss on the cheek goodbye. I was far from a âCasanovaâ,â you said indignantly, already crossing your arms in protest.Â
âIâm sure it was very sweet, but thatâs definitely not a real kiss,â he shrugged.
âDidnât realise you were the arbiter of kisses.â
âI donât need to be the arbiter to say you gotta do it like them,â he said, signalling at the lovers on the TV, âto have it really count.â
âWell shit, Iâve never had that happen at my job.â
The couple were now fucking quite ferociously in the supply cupboard at their work. Paper and trays were flying and shelves were being rocked, but nevertheless they faced no interruption despite the storm they were creating. Even just breathing as heavily as they were wouldâve had them kicked out in real life, you thought.Â
âSo youâve never fucked anyone either then? Youâre like a full proper virgin, apart from your Shawn love affair of course.â
You rolled your eyes at him.Â
âDidnât say that,â you shrugged.
âWhat?â
âWhat do you mean âwhatâ?â
âYou shagged someone, but you never kissed?â
âIt wasnât like we were doing it because we really liked each other,â you supplied. âWe both just agreed weâd scratch a mutual itch and go our separate ways after.â
It went almost exactly as clinically as how it sounded too. Even thinking back to that night where youâd both snuck off to the bathroom together, you could only remember the giddy joy you felt at actually getting off with someone else instead of feeling anything for the other hybrid. Which was a good thing too because it wasnât like youâd ever seen him afterward. Youâd never been sent back to Norway again.Â
Heâd shucked off his clothes and told you to do the same, confirming you still wanted to do it. Heâd so nicely asked âyou still want to fuck, yes?â And barely said a word more, only a few âharderâs or âno, like thisâ. Youâd both been pressed up against that cold concrete corner, hands grasping through the dark, and trembling bodies quietly drinking in each others attentions while making sure to stay as quiet as possible in fear of waking up your superiors. Heâd been more experienced, so heâd gotten you off first and then he finished, only taking a moment's breath before wiping himself off and putting his clothes back on. Heâd left you alone to collect yourself soon after.Â
âWell that shouldnât count either,â Gaz said, after youâd given him an overview of your experience.Â
âWhat? But we actually did it! We both came and everything.â
âCame and then went! Sounds shite,â Gaz groaned. âShagginâs meant to be fun. Not just ticking each others boxes and then walking off.âÂ
âDamn, youâre really not letting me have anything here,â you smirked, refolding your arms again.Â
âBecause youâre supposed to really want it off the person youâre with, like be able to kiss them and talk and laugh and stuff. If Iâd had someone bark instructions at me and then leave me straight after Iâd feel like it was part of our job or something.â
âAlmost my whole lifeâs been this job, itâs not like I ever thought Iâd get anything like youâve probably had. When I finally got old enough to even have sex Iâd already been working for years. Sex like that is the only way I get to get off with someone,â you explained, trailing off a little at the end when you thought back to Rudy revealing more about he and Alejandro.Â
So what you were saying wasnât strictly true. However it wasnât like you were going to reveal to Gaz that youâd been picturing you and various match ups in the 141 to a degree where you were struggling to concentrate at least daily now. Every interaction with Price and Gaz had felt charged with a thousand volts of electricity where it hadnât necessarily been before.Â
Price could be shifting you out the way while he walked by you, putting his hand against your back and youâd practically melt into it. Gaz had ruffled your hair condescendingly after youâd gotten the all clear for your hip from the doctor and your scalp had tingled for the rest of the day after. Then there was the phone call youâd had with GhostâŚhearing his voice rumbling down the line made your stomach do weird little flips and had your tail wagging the whole time even while he was chastising you for losing control.Â
You blamed it all squarely on big stupid Rudy. Rudy who had been training with you on the matts the day before, targeting your sore hip the whole time while divulging little details of he and Alejandroâs relationship.
Heâd told you about how they grew up together on the same street. Trained together. Fought together. One day Rudy had almost been killed, trying to protect Alejandro so fiercely heâd jumped in front of a bullet for him. Then after heâd had his shoulder patched up, heâd apparently gotten tired of Alejandroâs lecturing and found a creative way to shut him up.Â
When Rudy had suggested you try something similar with your team, now that you were constantly getting heat for your injury, youâd gotten as hot as a lava rock before tumbling off the edge of the matt. Your distraction had been fully taken advantage of by your smarmy wise-ass opponent whoâd decided to throw you from the fight.Â
âSo now that youâre with us, you think youâll be able to find someone to fuck you properly then?â Gaz asked, pulling you back into the room so hard you were left blinking back at him without response.Â
You tried to respond to that with anything other than a high pitched whine. Though you decided to stay silent when you realised that was impossible.Â
âJesus, your face. Youâre getting all embarrassed just at the thought. Youâre such a virgin.â
âI am not embarrassed! And Iâm not a virgin!â
âYeah you are, youâre doing that thing with your ears!â Gaz grinned.Â
âWhat thing with my ears?â You whined.
âThey always go lopsided when youâre embarrassed, one always points up and the other one folds back all awkwardly. Juuust like that,â Gaz said, quickly snapping a picture with his phone.Â
âHey!â
Gaz turned the phone so that you could see. The ear situation was exactly as he described, while your mouth slanted into a displeasured frown and your eyes were set hard into the screen.Â
You smacked his phone from his hand so that it landed on the couch. From there you used the opportunity to snatch it up, quickly scrabbling against the old material to prize it up. Just before you could delete it however Gaz dove on top of you, easily overpowering you and prying the phone from your clawing hands. Your back was pressed flat onto the couch cushions, your body straining as his full weight sat on top of you, angled so that he could fend of your legs with his body, hold back your hands with one arm and use his one free hand to secure his phone.Â
âGaz, get off! Iâll bite you!â You protested, voice going squeaky as he kept you pinned underneath him.Â
âYou wouldnât dare,â he laughed, holding his phone high above your head. âPrice would go mental at you.â
âWhat are you doing?â You huffed, almost getting a bit of leverage over his forearm until he shunted it back fully into place and squashed your arms in the process.
âTaking some lovely pictures for Ghost. The manâs been desperate for updates while weâve been away, you know,â Gaz said, clearly typing something while he still fended you off.Â
âDonât send him pictures! Ah, Gaz! Thatâs it, Iâm going nuclear.âÂ
You flung your head up and licked all down the length of his arm, slobbering down the full bulk of it and sending him recoiling. A satisfied grin lit your face when his phone fell down the back of the cushions. You then twisted your body, managing to use the nasty surprise and the momentum so that you could reverse the position, landing on top of him while he was squashed to the couch. Though you almost faltered when you saw him below you, you still kept a good drip. You managed to hold him there a moment, looking down at him with all your mixed feelings twisting their way through your gut.Â
âThatâs fighting dirty, Pup,â Gaz huffed, not bothering to struggle now that you were on top.
Both of you breathed heavily, you could feel Gazâs heartbeat rattling quickly below you. It was pounding heavily against your legs from where you sat above him. Your own heartbeat hammered erratically, growing more wild at the compromised position.Â
âIâm a hybrid! I need the element of surprise to have the upper hand,â you said, trying desperately to keep to the topic at hand.Â
âColour me surprised then.â
âAnd me. What the fuck are you two playing at then, eh?â
Both you and Gaz whipped your heads round at the same time, meeting the irate eyes of Price. You felt your ears lower immediately and clambered off of Gaz, awkwardly looking away while you fixed yourself. Gazâs smile had dropped, but he didnât worry about looking sorry. He flipped himself up and tilted his head.Â
âNothinâ, just messing around. Whatâs up, Cap?âÂ
âIâll thank you both to not get yourselves injured doing anything stupid, please,â he said sternly.
âSorry, Sir,â you mumbled, ears still laying flat against your head.Â
âNone of that,â Price grunted. âI need to send you both off today. Iâve got some contacts Iâm going to get in touch with, but I trust that you two can manage some reconnaissance without me. That alright?â
âCourse, Sir,â Gaz answered.
You nodded along with him.Â
âGood. Go get something to eat and get ready to head out.â
âIs it just the two of us going?â Gaz asked.Â
âNo. Your company is waiting in the canteen for you,â he said, a sly smile beginning to form across his lips.Â
Immediately you got a sense that you were going to like the group you were going out with. Your tail twitched and your ears perked up, Gaz and Price couldnât help but laugh at your reaction. Though when you shot Price a look to confirm your suspicions he leaned back and sobered, nodding his head at you as if to answer your question.Â
Itâs him. You thought.Â
You raced up from the couch and away from the booming laughter, whoâs echoes followed you down the hallway. After bolting like a wild stallion and flying past multiple shocked people you burst into the little canteen and looked around slowly until your eyes zeroed in on your target.Â
It didnât take long for you to find the black balaclava, the familiar scarred mouth below revealed so that he could eat the steaming rice and vegetables on his plate. His big body was angled away from you, talking to his mohawked companion and blissfully unaware of the presence about to attack him.Â
âGhost,â You whispered to yourself.Â
You couldnât hold yourself back. As conscious as you felt of all the other people spread throughout the room, you werenât able to let them stop you from running up to Ghost and wrapping your arms around him and whining. Â
âIâm gonna assume thatâs you, Pup. Otherwise Rudyâs gotten awfully sweet on me.â
Hearing the low timbre of his voice was enough to get your tail into a frenzy. He was really there and you were getting to hug him. Even better - he soon stood up and brought you round to his front so that you could snuggle up under his chin. His scent filled your whole body, your lungs burned with him.Â
âYouâre here,â you sighed, adjusting into the bulk of him.Â
âJeez, Iâm feelin a bit left out, Pup. Iâm here too,â Soap said from behind you.Â
âYou don't appreciate my hugs, MacTavish.â
âSays who?â Soap said, a smile evident in his voice. âGet over here, you wee shite.â
He grabbed you then, forcing you from Ghost and wrapping his big stupid barrel arms around your body. Even while being crushed you had to admit that you loved the attention. It also meant you got to face Ghost, even if you had a silly grin plastered all over your face and a wag in your tail that wouldnât leave. Nothing got you more excited than seeing the coy smile he wore just for you.Â
âMissed you too, Pup,â Ghost said, angling his head toward your tail.Â
âReally?â
âMhmm,â he murmured, his voice silky smooth in your ears. âBeen lonely walking around without my little shadow.â
âThen you shouldâve come sooner,â you huffed, finally breaking free of Soapâs arms.Â
Soap flashed you a cheeky smile, his eyes glimmering brightly at you as if all his past fears had been allayed. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder, huh. Though you didnât get to dwell on that for long.
Soon enough you were yanked back onto Ghost by the collar, forced to sit astride his massive lap and face him directly in the eyes. The fact the top half of his balaclava was still secured only made his stare more intense, the bright pools of his eyes practically spitting off heat they focused so hard. No matter how hard you scrabbled against him, he kept you like that, pinned onto him with no other choice but to face him down.Â
âYou shouldnât have taken yourself off to the kennels, naughty Pup,â Ghost said lowly, breath hot on your cheek. âThe reason I wasnât here sooner was because I was busy undoing Priceâs mess these past few days. You donât ever make decisions like that without me there again. Youâre my responsibility, mine to look after - not Priceâs, not Gazâs, not anyone else's. Do you understand?â
Your mouth went dry, you were still actively squirming in place. You didnât understand the sudden shift in his demeanour. Heâd never treated you like that before. Heâd never grabbed you or spoken to you with such a menacing tone. Nevertheless it felt like he was holding your collar like he was about to stick a gun to your head.
Your ears had flattened and your tail had calmed, nervously twitching as it dangled to the ground. After taking a nervous gulp, you nodded. Mood thoroughly soured.
âI just thought itâd be better if I got it over with⌠Price tried so many ways to get me out, I thought theyâd make it worse if I fought it.â
âYeah? Well I've Sorted it now, I was never gonna leave you in that little prickâs care so that he could hurt you and do whatever he wanted just to prove a point. This,â he said, jingling your handler tag, âmeans that I have a duty to you, and you have a duty to me. We look out for each other - weâre legally bound together for as long as we live. Part of that means that you donât go off taking orders from whoever slings their rank around. Okay? Donât put yourself in a position to get hurt just because youâre used to assuming thatâs the right thing to do.â
âOk,â you said meekly, nodding hard despite the grip Ghost still had on your tag.Â
He huffed out a breath, finally exhaling after his tirade and releasing you. All the heat in his eyes died and suddenly they were back to crinkling jewels. You had to blink back at them just to know that you werenât seeing things. Heâd looked so angryâŚno,that wasnât really it, was it? He was hurt, annoyed maybe. The way heâd been speaking was desperate, in only the way Ghost could sound desperate. Making sure that his point hammered home.Â
Your shoulders sagged and you let your ears cautiously spring to a neutral position, finally summoning the courage to look away from him. The noise of all the other diners floated back to you, forcing you to look around to see if anyone had paid much attention to your scolding. Apparently not, Ghost had been quiet enough so as not to attract much attention beyond a few stray stares.Â
âHey,â Soap said, reminding you that he was still sitting across from you. âYou know heâs only getting on at you because he was running around like a mother goose tryna keep you from those wankers in 104.â
You turned to him, grateful for an excuse for someone else to look at. Even while remaining heavy hearted at upsetting, his words had perked you up a little. You could feel your ears raise a little more above your head.Â
âMother goose?â you repeated back, a smile rising on your lips.
âOh yeah, he was flapping around like crazy. Giving it âIf anything happens to Pup, Iâll shoot the fucker responsible. I donât care if its just a hair out of place, mark my words, Johnny. Theyâll be bloody unidentifiable!â,â Soap said, doing one of his dreadful Ghost impressions.Â
It made you laugh if nothing else. Ghost groaned from behind you, but pulled you further into him, and further into his scent. You breathed him in and sighed, nuzzling underneath his chin and into your favourite spot. Even if he had just told you off like a bad dog, you couldnât hold it against him. All that mattered was that you were back together again and he had somehow managed to solve your little situation.Â
Which did make you wonderâŚhow the hell did he manage to pull that off? And how lastingly mad was Ghost going to be.Â
âGhost?â you mumbled into his collarbone.
âMm?â
âHow long are you going to be angry with me?â
Most important question comes first naturally.Â
âIâm not angry with you. I just needed to get my point across. Somehow Iâve got to look after you, but you make it really bloody difficult when youâre always off flying into trouble,â he grunted. âFirst Iâve got to deal with the kennel debacle and then Iâm getting a call from Price telling me you got yourself shot. Feel like Iâve hardly had a minute to breathe with everything going on.â
âNot to mention youâve got that fuckinâ parade thing to look forward to now,â Soap snorted, pointing his fork in Ghostâs direction.
âParade thing? What?âÂ
Ghost was about to explain, but Gaz and Price turned up before he could open his mouth. Gaz took his place next to Soap, setting his tray down on the table before bumping his shoulder. Price sat between you all and smiled to himself when he saw you curled into your handler. He handed you a tray of steaming hot chicken and rice after heâd set his own in front of him.Â
âHappy now?â Price asked.Â
âMm, almost,â you dead panned. âApparently Ghost has to go marching off to some parade though.â
âThatâs a negative. We have to go marching off to the parade and demonstration day, Pup. Both of us.â
Your ears dropped back again and you drew back from Ghostâs side just so that you could eye him directly. What did he just say? You couldnât work out why on earth anyone would want you in a military parade. Your tail was broken. You were awful at drilling. How on earth was this going to work?Â
âUhâŚsay what now?â
âTime to polish up your dancinâ shoes, sparky,â Soap grinned. âFace left! Forward! Stop! Find your center!âÂ
Soapâs drill sergeant impression, complete with leg movements, landed like a lead balloon. Gaz elbowing him did very little to relieve its weight. You breathed out a bone weary sigh and collapsed against Ghost.Â
âJust leave me in the kennels to rot.â
âNow, now, Pup. Thatâs not the attitude,â Ghost chuckled. âWhereâs my - âoh thank you Ghost, youâre my heroâ speech?â
âI musta left it behind in my non-parade trousers,â you glowered.Â
Price laughed a rich laugh, luckily just in-between eating. The others all sported smiles that did nothing to make up for the annoyance that was plastered all over your face.Â
âWhatâs the big deal? All you gotta do is a little frog marching and a bit of demo on how you work?â Gaz said, trying to reassure you.Â
âThe âbig dealâ is that I donât wanna be a spectacle for the general public to gawk at,â you said sourly. âIve seen parades, because Iâm usually too beat up to be called into them mind you, and they suck for hybrids! We have to dress up all fancy in those silly little harnesses and dumb berets and then we get dragged around like animals on stupid gold rope leashes. Then as if thatâs not embarrassing enough theyâre gonna make me growl and bark in front of everyone to show off the âfearlessness of our fair British troupe in the face of agressionâ - no thanks.â
âI hate the growlinâ thing,â Soap muttered, sticking a forkful of chicken in his mouth.
âWell itâs still better than getting beat up by the 104 for a week, Pup,â Price said, directing his fork toward you.Â
âYou say that, but i bet if you were in my shoes and after doing all that drilling had a bunch of stinking civvy kids tryna touch your tail and their dumb parents tryna ruffle your ears - youâd say something different.â
âI wonât let anyone touch you, Pup. I promise,â Ghost soothed. âWe just need to get through the day and then Iâll get us out of there.âÂ
âAnd how are you even gonna be in the parade when you canât show your face?â You asked, throwing up your hands at his balaclava.Â
âTheyâre permitting me a neck gaiter.â
âYou allowed to wear a skull one?â Soap asked, his lips curling into a bemused smile
âUnfortunately not, I was told it had to be plain,â Ghost shrugged.Â
âOf course you asked,â you said, rollling your eyes but smiling despite everything.Â
âWell itâs only down to me asking that got you this replacement gig in the first place,â Ghost reminded you before shunting you onto a spare seat. âNow eat your lunch and stop your whining. If I have to hear anymore complaints Iâll make you wear a muzzle. Iâll find a pink sparkly one with charms on it and all.âÂ
You folded your ears back at that, mouth gaping at the threat. He wouldnât dare! Or would he? You looked between him and Price and huffed when they gave nothing away behind their serious expressions.Â
Only when you started shovelling food in your mouth did they both start laughing and shaking their heads between each other. It made your cheeks burn, but you kept quiet and busied yourself with the delicious canteen food that you were sure to miss on your return home. It was better to focus on that than earning yourself a telling off for glaring at your superiors over your plate.Â
âIâm surprised they let you off with a little parade instead of sacrificing Pup for the week,â Gaz said thoughtfully. âWhoâd you have to go asking to get that kind of trade off, LT?â
âWell it wasnât just the parade, I was supposed to go apologise to the father and do a little grovelling too.âÂ
âAnd howâd you worm your way out of that one, ay?â Price asked, already groaning before hearing the answer.Â
âWho said I wormed out?â
âYou said âsupposed toâ Ghost.â
âWell you see, Captain - the benefit of never showing my face is that no one really has any way of telling that itâs really me when I ârevealâ myself,â Ghost said smoothly, a smile apparent in his voice alone. âErgo, doesnât necessarily need to be me that turns up to apologise.â
âOh, you bastard,â Price chuckled. âIâm not covering for you if they work out what you did.â
âNo need, I got a message to say itâs all handled.â
-đş-
The light was just starting to drain from the land, the orange glow of the sun smattered the ground with withdrawing tendrils of light. They washed across the pale dirt, stroking it with their warmth before retreating somewhere behind the darkness. Slowly and then all at once the sky went from orange to black.
âI assume youâre excited to go home now that youâre not going back to the kennels,â Rudy said, breaking the easy silence that had fallen between you.Â
You nodded an answer, but didnât say anything back.Â
The other hybrid had been relatively quiet since youâd arrived, apart from asking what the news was from Soap and Ghost, he hadnât said much else. Heâd instead made a point of exaggerating just how tired heâd been from the night before, only showing you the hickey that flamed up around his collar bone as he yawned and stretched.Â
Heâd been sleeping for most of the rest of the journey to the watch point. After being out and actively looking for the target for a few hours however, the two of you had gotten more restless, fidgeting and shifting how you sat every few minutes.Â
Still, you kept your eyes across the horizon and your ears pinned forward. You didnât want to mess up anything else after everything youâd been called out for so much already. You were especially aware of the fact that Ghost and Soap were only a few meters from you both as well. This was the last situation you wanted Rudy baiting you in.Â
âYou ever been in a parade before?â
âNo,â you answered, shifting the leg you were sitting on and flicking your eyes out over the ground.Â
âTheyâre not too bad. The ones here anyway, you do a little showing off and then you get some free food..âÂ
âDo they make you guys walk on a harness and bark at the men too?â You asked dryly.Â
Rudy threw his head back and laughed. The sound caused a small smile to break out on your face and you shook your head at him for the disturbance. Nevertheless the smile stayed on your face while you continued to keep watch.Â
âYou British hybrids have to put up with a lot, hm?â
âYou donât know the half of it,â you said sourly.Â
âI know enoughâŚâ Rudy replied, seemingly trailing off as he spoke.Â
You looked away from the spot youâd been boring a hole into with your eyes only to glance at Rudyâs face. It took on that serious hard look again, his lips stony and his eyes cast far away.Â
âYouâve worked with a lot of us then?â
âA decent amount.â
âTake it youâve not met anyone half as charming as me, yknow - since you were all grumpy about working with me the first time.âÂ
He snorted at that.
âNone of them have been anything like you.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYou have some life about you, itâs a good thing,â you saw him shrugging in your peripherals. âMost of them are quiet, angsty. Half of them look like theyâre glad to die when their superiors send them off just to protect themselves. The other half just seem dead already.â
His words stole anymore words from coming to your lips. You knew exactly what he meant - that used to be you after all. The old you would never have done anything like youâd done on your last mission for any of your previous superiors, would never have let the beast inside you rage. You had to be clear enough to protect yourself. You spited them too much to be willfully suicidal, youâd rather see them die instead of you.Â
Now that had all changed. Ghost had only just reprimanded you because you put yourself in harms way, but even still you knew youâd rather die for any of your team than have them go instead. With that thought in mind, your back prickled with a chill that shivered through your whole nervous system.Â
âYou donât have to tear yourself apart just to be a good soldier, Pup. I hope being with the 141 for any amount of time has taught you that all that doesnât even matter. We get to have lives too, you know? Get your job done and keep yourself and your boys alive, fight so that you get to come home and actually live. Find out what makes you happy and do things that you like because thereâs so many of us hybrids that are used like bullets and so many humans that are so happy to discard us once weâve hit our targets. Fuck anyone that tells you youâre disposable. We have just as much right to be here as anyone - remember that.âÂ
You blinked back at him. A faint buzzing rang through your ears, a shrill little hum that tried to force tears from your eyes while it snatched at your heart. A low growl threatened to loose from your throat, bark at the enemy, fend off those pesky emotions.Â
No, he wasnât attacking you. He was just speaking the truth.Â
âDo you wanna take over as my therapist?â You muttered, having to clear the lump from your throat before you could spit even a word out.Â
He laughed wryly at that and muttered something under his breath. âIâm just saying⌠you couldâve ended up like anyone else you got trained up with, but you didnât. Donât waste your new life stuck on what things were like. Make something good out of it.â
