Chapter Eighty-Five
A/N: I am so sorry about Sunday!! I just have been so busy with work and uni that I literally just didn’t get the chance to update. But here you are, and there’s a lot of Edward in this chapter, so I hope that makes up for it. Let me know what you think x
April gave way to May. Charlotte turned two up in Norfolk, and Harry and Emmy started to discuss weaning Grace, who was so close to crawling that both of them knew it could be any day now. They had a pretty busy month ahead. Two days after a day in Southampton, Harry and Emmy found themselves with another busy day.
“Make sure you don’t take your eyes off her,” Emmy was saying. She was sat in front of her dresser, Hannah loosely curling her hair. She had a visit that day to WISE, an organisation that promotes women working in science and engineering, while Harry was heading to St James’ Palace to record an interview with Dr Chris Van Tulleken for his documentary about HIV. Grace was going with him, because they had no one to babysit her this time.
“Don’t worry, I’ll have Edward with me, he can watch her while we’re filming,” Harry answered.
Emmy still looked concerned. “Well make sure he actually watches her-”
“Em, it’s Ed, he’ll look after her.”
She huffed, still worried, and Harry rolled his eyes at her, his mouth tugging up at the corner, before he returned to dressing Grace. The little baby cooed up at him, kicking her feet so that he couldn’t put on her shoes, and he scowled at her.
“Will you stop?” he hissed playfully, tickling her.
“Gah!” she said. “Gee to wa.”
Hannah laughed lightly. “She is the sweetest little thing.”
“She’s a menace when she wants to be,” Harry answered, but he too couldn’t help but smile affectionately at Grace. “Hey? You going to be good today?”
Her large blue eyes looked up into his as she absentmindedly played with her own toes, and then she broke into a beam. Harry chuckled and leant over to blow a raspberry on her tummy, making her squeal with laughter. She was in a good mood – she was going to be fine.
Harry sat Grace on his hip as he outstretched his other hand, grinning at Dr Chris Van Tulleken who had jumped to his feet at Harry’s entrance. The doctor smiled somewhat nervously, and bowed his head before shaking Harry’s hand.
“Your royal highness!” Chris blurted anxiously, then his eyes flickered to Grace and he corrected himself. “Your royal highnesses.”
Harry barked a laugh. “Don’t worry about this little one, she’s being very cheeky this morning. My secretary will look after her while we’re filming.” He glanced over at Edward, who looked slightly apprehensive.
“Of course, I wasn’t worried at all, it’s an honour to have you both here,” Chris said. “You attract a whole new type of person to the show, and you’re quite the expert on HIV yourself.”
“I don’t know about that,” Harry said dismissively, grinning. “You’re the one with the degree, I was never any good at science.”
“You don’t need to be!” Chris said. “I know the science behind HIV, but I think you know far more important things, such as the stigma, the mental health involved with it, the problems that make people more vulnerable to it.” He took a deep, nervous breath, then said, “I have some pretty deep questions, I’m eager to pose them to you.”
“I’m eager to hear what you’ve got to say,” Harry said, with a laugh. “Thank you for asking me to take part.”
“To be honest, I never expected you would,” Chris said. “I’m used to requesting experts’ help with things and getting no reply. For your office to contact me back – it was incredible.”
Harry chuckled. “I think you think I know more about HIV than I do.”
“I’m sure you’ll be an asset regardless.”
The scene was set up ahead of them, the cameras and lights focusing on the two chairs, facing each other, so that Chris could interview Harry face-on. There were a dozen people in the room, including a director who was next introduced to Harry, and a few cameramen. A make-up lady came over to stand behind the director, waiting to cover Harry in flattering powders.
“I suppose it’s time for me to get ready, huh?” Harry asked, readjusting Grace in his arms and peering down at her. “Time to go with Uncle Edward, Grace? Yeah?” He looked up, searching for his secretary, but Edward was already there. Silent, ready, waiting. He managed a smile as Harry kissed the top of Grace’s head and then passed her over. Edward took Grace into his arms, so she was sat on one of his hands while his other hand snaked round her body, and she leant back into him so she could see out. “Be good with Edward, okay?”
Harry’s eyes then flickered to Edward’s face. “And you be good with her, too.”
Edward rolled his eyes at his teasing, but didn’t respond – why had he volunteered for this, he was never good with children, they were too stressful.
“I hope she’ll stay quiet and won’t interrupt,” Harry said to Chris, as they both took their seats opposite each other. “Her mother’s out today, visiting a charity that is potentially more relevant to you than me – WISE. It encourages women to work in science and engineering, I think she said.”
“Ah yes, I’ve heard of that charity,” Chris said. “I must say that her work in supporting women in science is unprecedented, especially for someone who isn’t from a science background herself. She is very popular amongst the female scientists that I know.”
“Emmy just believes that women and men should be equal in all aspects, and working within science is one of the areas that she felt needed to be addressed,” Harry explained, with a smile. “Her drive is amazing.”
“You must be very proud of her.”
“Infinitely so.”
Chris smiled, then took a deep breath and turned to the director. “Shall we start?”
“Yes, let’s get this ball rolling,” the director said, ushering people to their positions.
Edward stood in the corner with Grace while the interview was filmed. He tried to stay out of the way of everyone who came bustling in and charging over to correct something. It was very relaxed, pretty much a casual conversation between Harry and Chris that centred on HIV and would later be edited to focus on the best parts. Harry was doing incredibly – this was something that he was very passionate about, and he talked about his work earnestly and eagerly, sounding incredibly knowledgeable and modest about it all. Edward tried to listen to what he could of it, while simultaneously trying to keep Grace quiet.
Grace had turned in his arms and now wanted to play with his tie, pulling on it and shoving the end in her mouth to try and soothe her teething gums.
“Don’t eat it,” he whispered to her, trying to pull it out of her grip. It was slimy with saliva, and her eyes were wide as he tugged it out of her mouth. Then she frowned, pouting.
“Gah!” she said, reaching for it and trying to eat it again.
“No, Grace,” Edward hissed, flicking his tie over his shoulder where she could not get it. “Don’t do that.”
“Me goo lee too!” she said, her eyebrows creasing as she tried to get it. Then she realised it had gone, and she started to cry.
Most of the staff looked over, some irritated, some amused, and Edward hastily apologised before hurrying out of the room. Grace giggled lightly, enjoying the wind in her face that came with his movement, and her arms flailed excitedly. She kicked her little feet, squirming, wanting to be free of Edward.
“No, Grace,” Edward grumbled, trying to keep hold of her. “Stop kicking, just settle down.”
“Mah!” she said, turning in his arms and looking back the way they’d come. She wanted Daddy now. Daddy would let her explore. “Jah tee!”
“Stop struggling,” Edward said, with a sigh. “Why are you being so difficult?” He managed a chuckle at Grace’s scowl. “Oh, did that offend you? I’m sorry, but I’m slightly offended by your behaviour. Do you hate me now?”
Grace shoved one of her fingers into her mouth, looking around as Edward headed down the corridor. He really just wanted an empty room that he could sit in with her until Harry was done. Any staff that walked past glanced his way, and their eyes widened as they put two and two together and realised who this little baby was. He certainly didn’t need anyone taking any pictures.
“Edward!”
He turned to see Rick heading towards them, jogging slightly to catch up. Grace looked round too, and she broke into a smile at the sight of the burly PO – Rick was her favourite, mainly because she was the only person who could make him break out of his stony expression and smile.
“John just told me to take her out into the garden, let her have some fresh air,” he explained. “Might calm her a bit.”
“That sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it, Grace?” Edward said, gently bouncing her slightly on his hip. Her big blue eyes went to his face, and he chuckled lightly. “She’s not too agitated now,” he said to Rick, as the PO led the way to the grounds. “I think she just wants Harry.”
“Of course,” Rick said, smiling as he watched Grace examine their surroundings. “She’s very well behaved, all things considered.”
“Hmm. She’s a good baby.”
“We’re both very lucky, we could be having to deal with the brattiest child.”
Edward laughed lightly. “I don’t know if my job is worth that,” he said, then looked back at Grace in his arms and sighed. “I’m only joking.”
“When, uh, when are you planning on hiring a PO specifically for Grace?” Rick asked, as they stepped outside. It was still a little chilly, the air was fresh, and the clouds overhead blocked out the sun. Grace babbled happily as she looked up at the nearest tree.
“I’m not sure yet,” Edward answered. “I wanted to do it soon, but it makes sense to do it when we hire a nanny, too. Although goodness knows when that’ll be.”
“Hmm, I don’t think Emmy wants a nanny yet.”
“No, I don’t think she does.”
“I mean, you have to admit, they’re doing pretty well without,” Rick said. “When you look at how William and Kate struggled.”
“They’re doing very well,” Edward agreed, then sighed. “In all aspects.”
Rick looked at the secretary for a few moments, but his gaze was out over the grounds when he spoke. “Do you think William and Harry will get involved in this…feud…soon?”
“I don’t think they’ll have a choice,” Edward said sadly. “Kate and Emmy seem to be at each other’s throats. It’ll only be so long before Harry will step in, and once he does I think William will stand up for Kate.”
“That’s the only reason Harry isn’t getting involved yet,” Rick said. “We were discussing it the other day. He knows it’ll end in him and William being pitted against each other. But do you think it’ll get to the point where neither of them can avoid it?”
Edward hesitated. “I think it’ll get to the point where neither of them want to. I think something will be said, something that is out of line, and it’ll blow everything up. I know that Harry is already close to saying something. Some of the stuff that Kate says…it hurts Emmy. And Emmy’s confidence is fragile enough.”
“She’s doing very well,” Rick said. “Far better than I expected her to.”
“Better than I expected, too,” Edward admitted. “She certainly is amazing. They couldn’t have picked someone better.”
“Loo mee,” Grace said then, reaching up for Edward’s ear. He took her hand to stop her from grabbing his lobe, bouncing her to try and distract her, and she nuzzled into the crook of his neck, getting sleepy now.
Rick smiled. “Speaking of better than expected, never thought I’d see you holding a child.”
Edward burst out laughing. “I’m surprising myself, trust me. But Grace is different, somehow.”
“She’s your goddaughter.”
He couldn’t help but smile at that, and he looked down at Grace’s face, her chubby cheeks, her blue eyes, and he felt so proud at that. “I never could’ve foreseen any of this, could you?”
Rick chuckled. “What? Harry forced to marry a girl who’s…what?...fourteen years younger than him? Them me be forced to have a baby? Both the girl and the baby outperform the Cambridges within two years of the marriage? No, Ed, I never could’ve foreseen any of this.”
“It’s almost like a film, isn’t it?” Edward mused. “Or a Netflix drama.”
“Or a crazy fanfiction,” Rick added, laughing at the memory of the time the three of them had found Harry fanfiction online and had read it.
Edward chuckled too, gently bouncing Grace whose small hand now held onto his tie as she sleepily giggled.
“Edward?” Rick said after a while, breaking the peaceful silence. “We should probably go back in now.”
“Of course,” Edward said, readjusting Grace in his arms so that she was more comfortable, before he followed Rick back into the building. He looked down at the little baby, so close to sleep, and he could not help but kiss the top of her fluffy head. It was true, he’d never liked children, but Grace didn’t make him feel uncomfortable. She made him feel very proud, but also very protective. He knew he would only be feeling a fraction of what Harry must feel, but he was sure that if anyone ever tried to sneak a picture of Grace, he would be furious.
Grace was asleep by the time they returned to the room, and Harry took her back into his arms carefully, endeared by the sight of his adorable sleeping toddler.
“Stop worrying,” Taylor said. “You have two of us here to look after her today.”
“Hmm, but I’m worried you’ll distract each other or something,” Emmy answered, nibbling her bottom lip. It was the day of the Party at the Palace that Harry, Emmy, William and Kate were hosting at Buckingham Palace, and they’d be out for the whole day.
Taylor rolled her eyes. “Emmy, will you fuck off about this whole “Taylor and Skippy” nonsense!”
“I wasn’t even talking about that, but thanks for bringing it up, now I am worried about that,” she replied, looking somehow even more worried. “Please don’t take your eyes off of her-”
“Is Emmy still fretting?” Harry asked, and both girls spun round to see him leaning against the doorframe, smirking, an eyebrow raised.
“With good reason,” Emmy said.
Taylor shot Harry an exasperated look. “Will you please tell your woman to stop worrying?”
“I would, but if I call her “my woman” she’ll probably slap me,” he said, grinning.
Emmy wasn’t in the mood for his jokes. “Taylor, remember, the nappies are in here and you’ll need to bring her up here to change her-”
“Em, I’ve babysat her before,” Taylor said. “And this is absolutely no different. Except this time I can just get Skippy to change her dirty nappies.”
Harry chuckled. “I don’t think that’s what he signed up for.”
“Is he with Grace now?” Emmy asked tersely.
“No, I just left Grace downstairs on her own,” he said dryly, then grinned. “Yes, he’s down there with her. They were playing peekaboo last I saw.”
She took a deep, shuddering breath as a hand fluttered to her stomach. “I feel quite sick.”
“You’ll be fine, please stop worrying.”
“But this is such a big engagement,” she complained lightly, moving into his open arms and nuzzling into a hug. “There’s going to be so many people there. And Kate.”
“Forget Kate,” Harry said. “You probably won’t even see her that much. Like you said, there’s going to be a lot of people there.”
Emmy nibbled lightly on her lip, until Harry gently gripped her chin and forced her to look up at him.
“Hey, I’ll look after you,” he said, with a smile. “When don’t I?”
“I just don’t want Kate to be mean to me again,” she said in a small voice.
“She won’t, I’ll make sure of that,” he said. It was breaking his heart to see her so saddened by it, and so he decided there and then that if Kate said even the slightest thing out of line, Harry would not bite his tongue anymore.
There was, however, no reason to worry. The first time they saw William and Kate, it was in public in full view of the cameras, and so Kate spared Emmy a kind smile, and Emmy hastily returned in, terrified to be seen as the mean one.
The two couples went their own ways straight after that, for it was time to meet lots of the families that were there. There were so many children, already running around and having fun. Harry and Emmy headed over to a group of them, who were playing tag.
“Hey guys,” Harry said, grinning at them all. “What you guys playing?”
“We’re playing ‘it’,” one of them said, then they hesitantly touched his arm before saying, “You’re ‘it’.”
“I’m ‘it’?” Harry quoted, looking offended, then he grinned, “You guys better run then!”
All the little kiddies squealed and darted away as Harry ran after them, laughing and trying to tag someone. Emmy watched, laughing herself. It was always so nice to see Harry playing with them, he was always so cheeky and he always broke the rules.
“Emmy, while Harry does that you can talk to some of the parents here,” Claire said, coming to stand beside her.
“Oh, but can’t I play too?” Emmy asked, pouting.
“Well…I suppose,” Claire said slowly. “I didn’t realise you wanted to.”
“I always get the boring job,” Emmy answered. Then, spotting that a little boy called Alex was about to tag a little girl called Sophie, she called out, “Sophie, watch out!”
Claire watched as Emmy cheered on the kids for a little, then said, “You need to make time to speak to the parents at some point today, okay?”
“Sure.”
There was, however, also a lot of time for fun and games; after all, it was a party at the palace. There was so many fun sports day-like activities, and when Emmy saw the three-legged race she begged Harry to take part.
“It’ll be fun!” she insisted, as around them kids tried to encourage him too.
“I don’t know, I don’t think you’ll be able to keep up with me,” he replied smugly, and she scowled at him.
“Please!” she said, pouting at him and pulling on his hand. To the watching cameras, her endearing wide eyes and his little smirk as he relented were a sign of just how much Harry evidently adored his wife, and some of the guests at the party would later talk of how in-love the new parents were.
After taking part in the three legged race, Emmy headed into the games tent, where the children could play lots of board games, anything from snakes and ladders to Twister. Emmy watched three little girls take part as they followed the instructions on where to put their hands and feet.
“Do you want to play?!” one of them asked Emmy excitedly, and Emmy couldn’t say no, even though she knew that playing put her modesty at risk. However, she was relieved to have chosen a playsuit to wear. So she got onto the mat, expecting to have to lose on purpose to avoid stretching awkwardly.
She was crouched down with one hand on the floor behind her when Harry came in, and he laughed at the sight of her. The photographers went wild to see their exchange.
“Having fun?” he teased.
“Go away, you’ll distract me.”
“I tend to have that effect.”
She threw him a playful scowl, and then it was her turn to put her left hand on the opposite side of the mat. The girls she was playing with started to giggle as they all knew that it would be very hard. Emmy was determined not to lose in front of Harry, but as she moved Harry reached out and tickled her. She gasped out in surprise and instantly collapsed onto the ground, shoving him away as she laughed. Everyone watching was laughing too, amused by this royal couple who were so down to Earth.
“You’re not very good at this game, are you?” Harry teased, helping her to her feet.
“I was!” she said, pouting at him. “You cheated!”
“How can I cheat?” he asked, snaking an arm round her waist as they made their way over to where some of the parents were stood. “I wasn’t even playing.”
“I can’t believe you made me lose Twister!” Emmy said later on, once they were in the car back to Kensington Palace with Edward and Claire. “I was doing really well, too!”
“You’d been doing it too long, it was time to move on,” Harry answered simply, playing with her left hand, twiddling her engagement ring. When he looked back up at her, she was still scowling. “What?”
“You’re just saying that because you know that I can’t argue with that,” she replied.
He grinned. “Now does that sound like something I would do?”
“Yes!” she giggled, then moved into his arms, nuzzling into his chest. “I’m tired out after today.”
“Hmm, playing board games has that effect on people. Goodness knows how you’d cope with a full time job,” he teased. She threw him another scowl, and he chuckled. “Wow, looks like I’m really pushing my luck with you today, huh?”
“It’s almost as if you want to sleep on the sofa,” she replied playfully.
He smiled, kissing the top of her head.
“That was a very good day, you two,” Edward said from the front. “Judging by the reaction on Twitter, people loved seeing both of you today.”
“It was a good day,” Harry agreed. “Especially since someone wasn’t rude to us.”
“Kate barely even spoke to us,” Emmy pointed out. “Surely people are going to notice that?”
“Well you just didn’t spend much time together today,” Edward said. “So I don’t think so. I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“Maybe she was just having a bad week,” Claire suggested, shrugging.
“She’s been having a bad week for the last few months,” Harry muttered.
“I hope so,” Emmy agreed with Claire. “We’ll be seeing both of them next week for Pippa’s wedding, so I hope Kate is still okay then.”
“She’ll probably be too stressed to worry about us,” he reassured her, giving her hand a squeeze.
They arrived home then, and Harry and Emmy traipsed somewhat sleepily across the grass. The afternoon was just giving way to evening, the sun starting to lower in the sky, and their long day had tired both of them out. Emmy was tucked under his arm, stumbling along beside him as she tried to ignore how much her eyes just wanted to close.
Harry unlocked the front door and they both headed inside, moving immediately into the living room to where Skippy, Taylor and Grace were.
“Oh, here’s Mummy and Daddy!” Taylor said, as Skippy got up from where he was sat on the sofa.
Grace was sat on the rug, playing with her sound machine, and she looked up to see Harry and Emmy enter the room, her mouth breaking into a huge smile.
“Ah!” she said, flailing her arms in delight. And then, before Harry could hurry over to scoop her into his arms, she’d crawled a few feet towards them, before stopping again.
There were a few seconds of silence, before-
“Oh my god, Grace!” Emmy squealed.
“Grace, did you just crawl?!” Harry cried, both of them delighted and surprised. Harry hoisted her up into his hold and Emmy came over to hug her.
“You clever girl, you clever, clever girl,” Harry said to Grace, kissing the top of her fluffy head as Emmy hugged her tightly.
Taylor and Skippy watched with smiles on their faces as Emmy twirled Grace round and round, Grace’s giggles filling the room, before she cuddled her back into her arms.
“Oh baby,” Emmy said, tears filling her eyes. “You’re so smart, I’m so proud of you.”
Skippy laughed at that. “She’s going to be another Einstein.”
Harry took Grace into his arms then, and her tiny hand patted his cheek as she giggled, loving the attention. He kissed her forehead, then looked over at Emmy as they shared a smile.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” she breathed, reaching up to stroke Grace’s hair.
“Me neither,” Harry said, before he cupped Emmy’s cheek with one hand and leant down to kiss her deeply. It was in moments like this that he realised just how lucky he was, that it put all life into perspective. And he kissed his wife as his daughter looked on, until Skippy cleared his throat.
“Ahem,” he said. “There are children present.”
