Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) Directed by George Lucas It's hard to believe we've already reached August in 2021! So @aninchaugust is here, a challenge that was started in 2018 by @tiny.sharma10 and @meghalika, where the goal is to create miniature artworks that fit into the space of an inch. I've participated in it in the past years and it's something I look forward to every year. They have come up with daily prompts for this year's challenge. While I don't think I'll be able to make a sketch for every day of the month, I'll see how many I'm able to do. The first prompt is to surprise everyone, so here is what I came up with... Last month I'd started a challenge myself to make art based on memes, and there is one meme that I wanted to draw, which is the 4-panel template featuring Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) from "Star Wars Episode II". So, I did that, but in the space of an inch square. I was thinking I'll make four one inch squares for each panel, but then I thought let me do all the four panels in one inch square only. This is also sketch number 600, of my @dailymoviesketch movie drawing series! I started an art account in 2016 with movie related sketches, and I've been numbering the sketches since then. Last year I moved to posting all the sketches on my @karthikabhiram account only, and now since Instagram introduced a Collaboration feature, all movie sketches will be posted on both accounts. The drawing was done with 0.5mm mechanical pencil with 4B lead on A5 notebook from @themedschoolstudent.store. You can swipe to see a scan, couple of uses of it as a meme template (though it isn't as effective due to the very small size), and also a short timelapse. Two entries for @aninchaugust #aninchaugust #aninchaugust2022 — This year I started doing sketches for this art challenge early, and you can see those in two earlier posts. The first sketch done actually in August though, is the miniature drawing you see of @mipalkarofficial. The other one is from the movie "Master" where you very briefly see the director @lokesh.kanagaraj in the last scene. Both drawings were done with 0.5mm 4B mechanical pencil. Lokesh was drawn on A5 notebook and the Mithila sketch is in an A7 @menorah.stationery sketchbook. Normally one would see artists putting up these collages roughly twice in a year. But the last time I remember seeing this and posting, was way back in May 2020. The Mandalorian Season 2 (2020) Created by Jon Favreau Django Unchained (2012) Directed by Quentin Tarantino Two entries for @aninchaugust #aninchaugust #aninchaugust2021 — For Day 29, the prompt was "Surprise everyone", so I thought I would draw these sketches on an Instagram Live session. The Baby Yoda one was done completely during that Live, and the Leonardo Di Caprio one was done partially that day and I finished it later on. The Live session is on my IGTV, but it would probably be a bit boring to watch. Both of these images (especially the second) have become popular as memes. The Baby Yoda one was done with multi colour ballpoint pen and the Leo one from "Django Unchained" was done with 0.5 mm 4B pencil. The notebook is an A5 size one from @themedschoolstudent.store. Slither (2006) Directed by James Gunn [This post has a collage of four of my recent artworks, you can swipe to see the individual works.] After watching "The Suicide Squad" sometime back, I rewatched one of James Gunn's older movies that I hadn't seen in years, this horror comedy called "Slither" with Grant Grant (Michael Rooker) being infected by an alien parasite that causes him to mutate and attempt to infect others in a small town. It's a well made movie with great effects (mostly practical). I got a Huion Graphics Tablet for a low cost on Amazon Prime Day. The first sketch I made using that on Photoshop is this "Slither" drawing. I also tried the tablet with Autodesk Sketchbook and did a quick sketch based on one of @sarahjanedias's pictures. These are only initial experiments and I'm just finding my way around digital, I hope to get better at it. Also posting a couple of one inch square drawings, these are traditional drawings done with 0.5mm 4B mechanical pencil. The drawing of the coffee cup is one I did during my Instagram Live Session from @roasterycoffeehouseindia's handle on the 25th of last month. The drawing of the "Roll Safe" meme guy was done with my left hand, as one of the drawings for @aninchaugust where the prompt was to make a drawing with one's non dominant hand. They had chosen that as the prompt for 13th August which is International Left Hander's Day. I did the drawing the next day though. For the digital works I made an alternate version with a paper texture added. The Matrix (1999) Directed by The Wachowskis “What if I told you... the line “What if I told you...” doesn't actually appear in the movie?” I’m trying out three different things with this artwork! First — this is an early entry for @tiny.sharma10 and @meghalika’s challenge @aninchaugust which is due to start on Sunday, but I thought I’lol do one now itself. Second — it’s also a meme based artwork, for my own art challenge this month, to create artwork based on memes. I haven’t been able to do as many works as I thought I would, but it’s fine I suppose. Third — @instagram has recently introduced a feature where two accounts can “collaborate”, where the same post would appear on both accounts and the engagement parameters would be shared. About a year ago, I moved to posting all my work on my @karthikabhiram account only. Previously, I used to put up my movie related sketches on my @dailymoviesketch art account, but then I thought it would be simpler for people to consume the content if they were on one account only. Going forward, I’ll make these art posts on both accounts. This is a drawing of Morpheus from “The Matrix”, which is an undisputed science fiction classic! This frame was used in several memes with the caption “What if I told you…” We’re getting a Part 4 hopefully this year, keeping fingers crossed for it. There's not a lot of history behind this — apparently this was a photo of then US President Barack Obama giving a medal to rockstar Bruce Springsteen. An unknown user Photoshopped it to make it look like he was giving a medal to himself. This picture never fails to bring a smile to my face, and I was laughing while drawing this too, very happy with my idea! #CreateWithKarthik — Meme Based Art — Hide the Pain Harold / András Arató My first sketch submission for my own art challenge to create meme based art, is this very well known face. This is András Arató, a 75 year old Hungarian retired Electrical Engineer, who went viral as a meme in 2012. Stock photos of his were used world over in memes, and he came to be known as "Hide the Pain Harold". He talks about this in a very nice TEDx talk, you could look it up on YouTube. From that video, he seems like a kind gentleman, who embraced the fame that comes with becoming a meme, and tried to be a positive influence to all. #CreateWithKarthik — July 2021 — Create art based on Memes So, it's here, the first edition of my very own Art Challenge! Thanks to @aarteaist for suggesting the theme, and the format is inspired by @mangopenciler2.0's #drawwithmango challenges. These challenges are a great way to explore our creativity, make art and connect with other artists. And this theme ought to be relatable and fun for everyone. The task is extremely simple — make art on the theme, post it and tag. The art can be drawing, photography, music, video, craft, writing, basically any form of creative expression. Post it on feed preferably, or if you aren't comfortable with that, you can post it on Story. 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐅 @khaby00 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐋𝐀𝐘 — Recently, this person Khaby Lame became viral for his videos that poke fun at things being done in a needlessly complicated way. Since I like drawing memes, I thought he would be a good subject to draw so I did. The drawing was done with multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 sketchbook. You can swipe to see a scan. I think I may have gone a bit overboard on the shading which makes him look older than he actually is. I also took this opportunity to post an entry for @zuvamart's Quarantine Flatlay Challenge with the theme #bookstagram. I am not one who reads books (used to, as a kid, but not now). So, I don't have any books that I am reading currently to arrange in a flatlay. I could have probably used my copies of "Watchmen", but I have already done that a couple of years earlier. So I decided to use sketchbooks instead. You can never have too many sketchbooks! That is coffee and not tea in the photo. Also, after watching "Army of the Dead" I thought I'll shoot these pictures with 50mm lens. These are at f2 though, and that's the aperture that I always use on the f1.4 lens. I haven't been giving much attention to the weekly prompts this year, however this one caught my attention and I thought of the vibing cat meme. An clip of a white cat nodding its head overlaid on different videos became very popular, and in particular, I loved the version with the cat vibing to a performance of the song "Ievan Polkka" by blind Turkish street singer Bilal Göregen. Only yesterday, I came to know that this song is actually Finnish, from 1928. I came across a lovely a cappella rendering of the song by the band Loituma from 1996.
