I see a lot of memes on how short the story would be if Odysseus just listened to Eurylochus, but like.. am I missing something?
Odyssesus telling his name to the cyclops is the biggest mistake obviously. But besides that… the crew and Eurylochus are constantly making messes that Odysseus has to clean up.
Full Speed Ahead: 6 hundred reasons to take what we can; let’s raid the place and go
Taking what they could is what GOT them into the situation in the first place. They took the cyclops sheep and brought the wrath of the cyclops
Remember Them: captain, we should run; captain please
If they’d run when Eurylochus wanted, they would’ve been caught and seen by the other cyclops. Certainly not able to make away with the sheep.
Luck Runs Out: please don’t tell me you’re about to do what I think you’ll do
If Odysseus HADNT gone to the wind god and gotten the bag, when they come upon Poseidon, the entire crew would have been gone. Having the bag of wind save them.
Puppeteer: we have to go save them/no we don’t!; let’s cut our losses you and I and let’s run
Had they done that, not only would all the men left alive be left as pigs, but the two would have never survived. They never would have gone to the underworld to the prophet, and never would have survived the journey home.
So Eurylochus doesn’t make any good suggestions to Odysseus. On the contrary, he proves to be a horrible second in command who doesn’t trust Odysseus and undermines his judgement at every step, causing constant conflict.
Remember them: insisting they run as the cyclops gather and possibly putting the whole crew in danger
Storm: captain, we will capsize at this rate, our fleet will fail; we’re taking too much damage to survive; at this rate, we won’t make it out alive
Luck Runs Out: the entirety of this song is not only Eurylochus challenging Odysseus and questioning his judgment in front of their entire crew, but also insulting Odysseus for the very thing that got 600 men out of Troy alive. It was Odysseus’s wit that ended the war in Troy. It was his wit that moved him to poor Lotus in the cyclops wine. It was wet to tell the cyclops his name was nobody, keeping them from being killed by all the additional cyclops that come to check out the scene.
Odysseus’s pride is what bringsPoseidon wrath, but it’s his width that has gotten 600 men that far.
Keep Your Friends Close: we don’t hear Eurylochus in most of this song, and that’s part of my problem with him. Why the hell is Odysseus staying awake for nine days? Why does he not have anyone on his ship that he can trust to watch the bag for him to close his eyes for 30 minutes? Where is Eurylochus when the other men are opening the bag and letting out the winds of the storm? Why does Odysseus’s second in command not have his back? Why are the men not conscious of the fact that the second in command would also disapprove of their actions? Is it because he wouldn’t? Is it because his constant undermining has encouraged it?
Then the very end, when Odysseus ask for help, closing the bag, what’s Eurylochus’s immediate response? it’s not OK. It’s not yes sir. It’s. “It’s too late.”
Even in the middle of a crisis, he still won’t listen to the captain. He still won’t trust Odysseus’s judgment that ultimately saves them in the end of the saga.
Puppeteer: Only I stayed outside, but the rest went in
Did Eurylochus not even try to stop the men? Does he have such little regard for their safety? He lets them do whatever they want? Has he earned such a little respect that they don’t listen to him?
Like I touched on earlier, if Odysseus listened to Eurylochus’s doubt, not only would all their men be doomed, but Eurylochus and Odysseus as well.
I honestly have so much distain for Eurylochus and his lack of respect for Odysseus. as the listeners and people who know the story, we know just how deep the facts of revealing his name to the cyclops run. But the rest of the men don’t. Eurylochus doesn’t. He just never trusted Odysseus to lead in the first place.

I’ve come to realize I heavily relate Helsknight to Odysseus and I genuinely have no idea why. I fear it is becoming a problem (Tbf it’s probably Epic’s fault but I am so confused where the correlation came from)
I dunno, I can see some of the parallels, especially in Epic's version, which is inherently a tragedy.
Both characters are strong warriors, skilled in their craft and decently smart [I would argue Odysseus leans really hard into cleverness, while Helsknight leans heavier into the idea of strategic knowledge. One leverages knowledge, the other leverages strength.]
Both characters are inherently protagonistic while still having obvious fatal flaws. [Helsknight is prone to giving into his anger, something often spurred by pride and resentment, the idea of might is right, I know better and I wish I could force you to agree. Odysseus is prone to giving into his pride, too used to his cleverness and guile getting him out of intense situations. See how he tells his name to Polyphemus because teaching a lesson is more important than escaping safely. See how he tries to slide away from taking responsibility for his actions and side-steps apologizing to Poseidon in Ruthlessness.]
On that note, both characters should know better [anger, especially irrational snap-decision anger, never helps Helsknight prove a point. Pride only ever leads to Odysseus losing men, and it's Poseidon's wrath that turns a 2 year trip into a 12 year Odyssey.]
Both have stories centered on fighting something bigger and more powerful than them, and inherently set against them. [Helsknight is against the universe. He knows it will devour him someday, and he fears the inevitable and fights it. Odysseus lives in a world that rewards brute strength and views cleverness as underhanded and dishonorable. In the original myth, Odysseus is an antihero of sorts. He is being punished for the sin of being smart instead of strong. A Real Greek would have killed Polyphemus.]
Both characters are very,,, community minded, power of friendship. Ike "I fight for my friends" meme.
Odysseus from Epic would be a cool voice claim for Helsknight. I personally don't think the voice matches, but it's a good strong male character voice I can see why someone would pick it.
Also, not sure if you listen to the playlists, but there's some Epic songs on the Helsknight playlist lol
#rns asks#anonymous#tbh i need to figure out a voice claim for Helsknight#ive got one for Tanguish but not for him#queue

B, F, P (so you can be petty if you want), and Z for writing meme...
B. Who’s your favorite side-character from something you wrote?
you know i love magnus and i know you love magnus but i already talked about him here
my favorite side character from beauty and the beast wip is definitely sofia. she’s an Older Sister, but feels like she hasn’t been a very good one, which is writing from the heart lol. i tend to write about siblings a lot, because i have a lot of them, and imo authors tend to undervalue any kind of sibling relationship between “hate each other completely” and “love each other devotedly.” sofia’s experience, and mine, is more in the middle: she can love her sister and still resent things she does, and feel guilty for resenting them, and wonder how much of that responsibility is hers, and not want it, and still step up to the plate as a protector and a friend.
F. What stories are you planning for the future?
#1 is my batb revision. i’ve got a lot of other things on the back burner, though, not least of which are threads (woods horror / gay coming of age), the priestess and the knight (romancing a faerie knight), and library keepers (“high fantasy” series).
P. What are your pet peeves in other people’s work?
it takes a skillful writer to sell me on a first-person narrator or the use of, like, more than 3 povs. the real kicker is multiple first-person povs. if i see that when i open a book, you’ve got an uphill battle
protagonists who do not give a shit about their surroundings
protagonists who don’t... drive... the plot... at all
as you also talked about: heroes who are called compassionate, but can’t actually be assed to care about anyone but their significant other
“monster romances” where the love interest is just a dude
for the love of god. your heroine is not not like other girls
feminist retellings that uh. take shallower views of women and their experiences than the texts they draw from
Z. If you could choose one work and immediately finish it, what would it be? How would you end it?
if not batb revision, then witch penelope (the one where penelope becomes a witch to get rid of the suitors)... i haven’t written it but it would be a short story so it feels like i should be done already. i haven’t decided if i would end it with odysseus returning or not. i’m predisposed to want a reunion, but i don’t think i’ll know if it feels right until i write the rest.

*
1. How many are you happy with?
I would say most of them? There are only a few where I’m like “Wait, why did I name it that again...?”
2. How many are… not great?
Eh. A few.
3. How many did you scramble for at the last minute?
Lol is there any other way to title fics?
4. How many did you know before you started writing/creating, or near the beginning?
Zero. Does anyone say otherwise? Who knows the title at the START? Where are all these disciplined, far-sighted fic writers, because I don’t think I know any.
5. How many are quotes from songs or poems?
Nine
6. How many are other quotes?
Five
7. Which best reflects the plot of the story/content of the fanwork?
Probably Some Other Beginning’s End, which is a what-if future fic imagining a scenario where Darrow and Victra have both lost their partners, leading them to turn to each other.
8. Which best reflects the theme of the story/fanwork?
I think Not For Ourselves Alone Are We Born, since the fic deals with Jon post resurrection and the ways he’s lived a life of duty, and given of himself and sacrificed for others, and the way Satin, having been born into prostitution and literally provided his body in service to the desires of others, would feel a kinship with that.
9. Which best reflects the character voice of the story/POV of the fanwork?
Crown Your Hatred.
10. Which is your favorite?
I particularly like Atropos, and the alignment with all of the Fates, given that Roslin didn’t spin the thread/hatch the plot (Clothos) or measure the thread/set the trap (Lachesis), but she’s the mechanism by which the thread is cut/the Red Wedding happens (Atropos).

https://rwdestuffs.tumblr.com/post/625369121618640896/done-dirty-gods
I’d like to make the point that the light god, the dude who killed Oz repeatedly and abused Salem to the point that she became the villainous being that we know today, is somehow on the “Heroes Wiki.”
You know, not like she demanded special treatment, tried going behind his back and tried to destroy him and his brother all because she demanded that the cycle of death not apply to who she wants.
Because I guess abusers are heroes now.
Says the creator of the ‘Savivor Mom Raven’ series.
Oh, and also, I HAD TO USE GODDAMN SOUTH PARK AS PART OF MY OPENER!
Incorrectly might I add as both the Light and Dark gods are not portrayed as directly opposing each other. So you’re mad you ‘had’ to use a show’s meme...incorrectly.
Let’s get this out of the way for any of idiots out there: Salem was NOT responsible for Humanity 1.0′s death. She may have provoked these two asshats, but she wasn’t the one who
1: Loaded the gun.
2: Aimed the gun.
3: Fired the gun.
By the same logic, people say Yang murdered Adam. How does that go with you again?
What did Salem do?- She just stood up to them and, inadvertently, gave them a target.
She directly lied to the first iteration of humanity after being punished for lying to the gods and being directly told she shouldn’t have done that all over demanding her husband be brought back to life even though God knows how many people die and aren’t brought back by the gods despite having just as much reason to want them back as Salem.
As far as I’m concerned, these gods were the villains of the story, and what I wouldn’t give to see Yang punch one of them in the face.
Probably because it’s a penis vs. vagina for you.
When making these “Godly” characters, it’s okay to give them flaws. In fact, that’s what makes the Greek Gods, Norse Gods, Japanese Gods, and Egyptian Gods so interesting. They have flaws, weaknesses, and more relatable personality aspects that makes it seem like we could have the guy responsible for the ocean’s tides as our next door neighbor, or the adorable little dog across the street as the one responsible for the sun coming up… and beating up a fish in a giant mech suit. Goddamn, I want to play Okami again.
I got off-topic. The point is, is that it’s okay for these Gods to give flawed advice… Provided that they gave advice at all.
See, Light God was insensitive to Salem’s plight, and in all likelihood, used the same rhetoric that her father used to lock her up in that tower as an excuse to just brush her off.
Salem: (falling to her knees) Please... Please, bring him back to me.
God of Light: I understand your pain, but you demand of me that which I cannot make so. Life and death are part of a delicate balance.
Such terrible rhetoric.
BTW, funny how you mention the Greek Gods. You want to know what the role of most Greek Gods are in their home myths?
Living Embodiments of Punishing Pride.
Helena Of Troy’s mother, Narcassist and Echo, Odysseus, Arachne, Midas-
Most of the targets of the gods were people who dared to act arrogant and like they were better/deserved more with the Gods smiting them for their fatal sin. Even the Gods themselves weren’t exempt from this, as many of them fell prey to their own pride and arrogance with the few (mostly) unscathed Gods being that way because they were significantly less prideful. Fuck, the Greek Gods came to be because Chronos was so cocky he could just eat his kids that it never occurred to him that his wife Rhea would trick him.
In fact, an always noteworthy story I remember was the tale of Orpheus and Euradyice, where a man traveled to the Underworld using his musical talents and demanded to have his wife brought back to life. It ALMOST didn’t work but he was just able to convince Hades on the condition that he not turn back on his way home. Spoiler Alert, he did out of a lack of faith in Hades, his wife WAS following him but he lost her because of it.
I bring this up because the Greek Gods were the INSPIRATION for the Brothers and I’d bet dollars to donuts that Orpheus’ tale was the inspiration for Salem and Ozma. You try to act like you know something about these things but completely ignore that hubris, the thing that fucked Salem over, was a running theme in the source of her backstory.
So when Salem goes to Dark God, and he does fulfill her request, it’s honestly like Salem is now picking a side. Except, it turns out that Dark God actually has to answer to the Light God.
God of Light: I know we have our differences, but I have not come here with the aim to control you. The same, however, cannot said for her. This woman came to you only after I denied her pleas – pleas that would have disrupted the balance that you and I created. Together.
The younger brother ponders this revelation.
God of Darkness: Then it seems I owe you an apology. Allow me to correct my mistake.
No he doesn’t. But nice cut context.
Does the relationship between the gods seem… manipulative to anyone? Like… The Light God (Fuck it, let’s call him “Lumin” for now, I’m not typing out that whole thing) is abusive to his brother?
Considering what I quoted above- Nope.
Acording to… I think it was Qrow, possibly in a WOR, the Dark God (Let’s call him “Ebon” because that’s a badass name, and I’m honestly not in the mood for “Light = Good, Dark = Evil” to be the underlying theme here) made his creations first. then Lumin was all “I can make something too!” and made humans to one-up his brother.
RWBY Volume 4 Episode 8 “A Much Needed Talk”
Qrow: They were two brothers. The older sibling, the God of Light, found joy in creating forces of life. Meanwhile, the younger brother, the God of Darkness, spent his time creating forces of destruction. As you can imagine, they both had pretty different ideas about how things should go. The older one would spend his days creating water, plants, wildlife. And at night, his brother would wake to see all the things that the elder had made and become disgusted. To counteract his brother's creations, the God of Darkness brought drought, fire, famine, all he could do to rid Remnant of life. Life always returned. So one night, the younger brother went and made something - something that shared his innate desire to destroy anything and everything.
Ruby: The creatures of Grimm.
Qrow: You guessed it. The older brother finally had enough. Knowing that their feud couldn't last like this forever, he proposed that they make one final creation... together, something that they could both be proud of, their masterpiece. The younger brother agreed. This last great creation would be given the power to both create and destroy. It would be given the gift of knowledge, so that it could learn about itself and the world around it. And most importantly, it would be given the power to choose, to have free will to take everything it had learned and decide which path to follow - the path of light or the path of darkness. And that is how Humanity came to be.
You misrepresent the show AND got it backwards. The God of Light created things first, then The God of Darkness and Humanity was a joint project.
Why should we consider you at all reliable, especially given how easy it would be to research this?
Like… Does that at all seem healthy to you?
No in fact, The God of Darkness is kind of a jackass. But nice job portraying your delusions as the exact opposite dumbass.
But regardless of that relationship, Lumin basically acted like that one abusive parent who destroys all of the child’s toys just because they went to the other parent to do something that the first parent was callous in denying them to do. Sorry if that brought up any bad memories for people.
More like they took the toy away when the child tricked the other parent into buying it even though the first said no.
Not to mention the relics. Outside of their purpose to resummon the gods, they don’t really do much. But these are literal artifacts left behind by said gods.
Plus, Lumin give Oz an impossible task of uniting humanity. It’s like he wants Oz to fail because he just wants an excuse to wipe them all out again.
How is it impossible when Humanity was united BEFORE SALEM?
Lumin treats humankind as an “experiment gone wrong” as if he’s just playing with peoples’ lives for his own amusement. If anything, Ebon is more sympathetic because he actually listens to their problems and wants to help them out.
Yeah-
The God of Darkness created the Grimm that make Remnant such a horrible place to live and was the one that killed all of humanity.
God of Darkness: My own gift to them... used against me.
The God of Light looks away in disappointment as the God of Darkness squeezes the sphere within his hand, creating a massive shockwave that envelops the world, smiting everything and everyone in its path. Humanity has been turned to dust, only Salem remains due to her immortality.
How is he more sympathetic?
Meanwhile Lumin is all “Sucks that your man died. Now get out.” at best.
We get it- You’re delusional.
Let’s take a look at another set of flawed gods in the form of The Norse Pantheon. Namely, Odin, Loki, and Thor. In myth, these guys were all given tasks that were basically impossible. Thor was tasked with drinking the ocean, and failed. Odin wrestled with time, and was brought down. And Loki lost an eating contest to fire. These flaws and weaknesses in regards to their hubris are part of them.
Meanwhile, Apollo lost a love to Eros because he said that he couldn’t shoot as well as him but I guess you’d assume Eros was the bad guy.
I mentioned this briefly in my “Done dirty: Oz” post, but Oz was basically brought back to cause conflict. Because… I guess Lumin was bored?
Or you know- a second chance to have the gifts of the Brothers again.
But the narrative wants people to see that Lumin and Ebon are “All good. All caring. And all knowing.”
Which is a load of bullshit. The narrative tries to paint Salem as some unsympathetic witch who couldn’t let go. When…
1: The woman was abused and locked in a tower until Oz came to rescue her.
2: She was willing to fight God to get him back. If anything, that shows true love. If you want my opinion, if you’re not willing to deck a deity in the nose for your loved one, then you don’t care about them (Take that, Abraham. Willing to sacrificing your own son just because your God told you to. Bet you wouldn’t see that from Amaterasu).
1. Doesn’t matter. There have to be people living just as bad if not WORSE than Salem and lost loved ones- it’s literally the rules EVERYONE has to abide by.
2. No, she tried to fight two gods because she was pissy. She never tried to fight them until AFTER lying to the God of Darkness and lead people to their deaths. All in the name of a legendary HERO, someone who WOULDN’T want to be brought back after all this death.
What I’m saying is that these gods are detached. Which would be an interesting aspect if the narrative had bothered to show that as being a bad thing.
So were the Greek Gods. Not the point of either one.
Then again, this is all being told by Jinn, a creation of the Gods (Namely Lumin). So maybe there’s some bias in there where they’re trying to make Salem out to be irredeemable while the gods are the undisputed good guys- and holy SHIT!- Jinn’s in on the gaslighting.
i mean… I still want everyone to eventually realize that Salem was gaslighted into being the villain of the story. because that sounds way better than the “Abused woman lashes out and becomes evil” angle that they seem to be going at.
Yeah and Adam was branded. Guess that means you think Adam was in right to chop off Yang’s arm then.
Funny thing there- You literally can’t redeem Adam OR Salem and keep the other evil without looking hypocritical because they committed the SAME FUCKING SINS.
But given the writers’ ability to handle racism (or lack thereof), I don’t exactly have a lot of confidence in this.
Way to reference the plotline with the walking counter example in it.
Then again, the did call her Salem…
… But also again, they did write the WF plot as that horrible mess…
But they also looked into a lot of fairy tale aspects for their characters…
While you didn’t do a lick of research or else you’d know the shit about the Greek Gods.
Then again, you couldn’t even be bothered to confirm the shit about the Brothers even as you openly say ‘I don’t remember this clearly.’ So what really should I expect?

LITERATURE QUIZZES . repost with your muse’s results for the following quizzes .
HOMERIC EPITHET . You are Airn, breaker of horses, which is how you should be introducing yourself to people from this day forward. This ancient epithet was used to describe Atreus (king of Mycenae), Agamemnon (son of Atreus, also king of Mycenae), Hector (prince of Troy), Diomedes (king of Argos), and now you. That’s a lot of pressure, I know. Just don’t screw it up. You’ll be fine.
FATAL FLAW . Your compassion. Bottom line: you’re TOO NICE, and this will inevitably spell out your doom. You might meet your end by sacrificing yourself to save another, or—even more likely—you’ll happen across some individuals of questionable character who will take advantage of your niceness and lead you to ruin. Either way, it’s not looking good. You need to be meaner. Maybe scream at a small child or leave a bad tip at a restaurant or something, I don’t know. I’m trying to save you, okay?
GREEK MYTHOLOGY DEATH . Killed by a wild boar that was sent by one of the gods. See, here’s the thing—someone sent that wild boar. It might have been Artemis, because she was jealous of your skill with a bow and arrow; it might have been Ares, who hated you; or it might have been Apollo, because your girlfriend blinded his son. There’s really no telling. You made enemies. This is just what happens when you’re too beautiful to even exist. Either way, you got mauled by a pig and are now dead, but you died in Aphrodite’s arms as she wept, so at least you've got that going for you.
LITERARY SETTING . You got Gatsby’s mansion! This larger-than-life crib is the perfect place for a party animal like yourself. It’s located on the Long Island Sound (ideal for swimming, lounging, obsessively staring across the water with a LaCroix in your hand and unattainable fantasies on your mind, etc.), but it’s also just a train ride away from New York City (city of dreams and $1 pizza). But let’s not forget the best part: it’s got a library that’ll make you wanna grab a fluffy blanket and a chai latte and literally never see the light of day again.
HOMERIC EPITHET . You are earth-moving Corvan. Homer used this epithet to refer to Poseidon. Earth-moving Poseidon is the god of water, earthquakes, and horses for some reason. He’s best known for spending ten years being mad at Odysseus, and that one time he lost the city of Athens to Athena and became quite salty about it.
FATAL FLAW . Your brutal honesty. You’re blunt. You’re outspoken. Frankly, you’re kind of a jerk. But you get away with it because you’re usually right and also because you’re indispensable to the major plot. But honestly? It’s going to come back to haunt you. One of these days, you’re going to be TOO honest. You’re going to refuse to lie at a critical juncture, upholding your honorable caustic truthfulness, and you’re going to pay the ultimate price for it.
GREEK MYTHOLOGY DEATH . Murdered by accident, in Achilles’ armor. One day, during the Trojan War, Achilles decides to just up and quit. He’s the greatest warrior apparently ever, so this is something of an issue. You can’t bear to watch men die in battle for Achilles’ pride, so you don his armor yourself and lead his men into battle. Everyone thinks you are Achilles, and morale is high. You die, however, because somewhere in there you remember that you’re actually terrible at fighting. Silver lining: Achilles avenges your death something FIERCE. So that's something.
LITERARY SETTING . You got Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s stunning country estate! This elegant mansion is replete with classy chaise lounges, tasteful decoration, natural beauty, and large marble statues of wealthy, gorgeous Brits. Totally ideal for a charming, Lizzy Bennet-type like yourself! The secluded woody hills are perfect for taking dates on long, romantic (un-chaperoned) strolls, and the house itself is so Instagram-worthy that even Taylor Swift (house-party hostess extraordinaire) will be jealous of you and your squad’s bash-throwing capabilities!

8/23: Gleick pages 1-50
In Nature Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Words are signs of natural facts.” Plato, on the other hand, describes words as “eternal characters which are no part of themselves” (30), far removed and abstracted from reality, and Gleick takes the side of Plato. Words, Gleick argues, “[permit] whole new architectures of information” (32) that are valuable not only for what they represent but also for their own inherent structure. Although words can be signs of natural facts Gleick shows that words and information are far more flexible than Emerson’s paradigm because they can build on themselves. Simply put, words can be meta. The word ‘definition,’ as a simple example, only has meaning because other words exist.
The structure, architecture, and flow of information matter just as much as the content. I was reminded of my presumably inadequate understanding of Wittgenstein, as I think he would argue that words do not say something in themselves; rather, the structure of words pieced together in context can show something. The chapter about African drums seems to further his (my?) point: the extra drumbeats providing context take language from ambiguity to a usable degree of precision; the drums show with the extra beats rather than say precisely what cannot be said. Words and other symbols only can exist as signs because of context—we take for granted being ‘shown’ because we have prior experience with words and a handy dictionary known as Google—and when symbols return to the ambiguity they once had when we were children, as in the example of the African drums only being able to represent tones, one realizes that showing through structure and “extra bits for disambiguation and error correction” (25) is necessary. That “single precious bit” (16) that has the possibility to convey information such as the fall of Troy as a Boolean data type, one or zero, fire or no fire, only ever has meaning in context. Context is the intrinsic meaning.
In my mind, context existed before writing only as a sort of present general consciousness, flowing around the world with the exchange of ideas. Now, however, past context has defeated the constraint of time through preservation in writing, giving it a very present effect on present context whenever one reads a book. For example, Shakespeare and its context still influences people and the contexts they live in today. The reader, reading something from the past, can also be influenced in his interpretation of the past by present context, leading to an unimaginably meta series of influences: the past influenced in interpretation by the present influences the present, which can then influence interpretation of the past. Is this generally understood idea of language of somewhat stupid when put in writing? Yes. Language is complicated as information. No one knows whether life imitates language more than language imitates life, despite what Oscar Wilde might think. When he said, “Life imitates art more than art imitates life,” he was just making a case for the neglected side of the argument. Language absolutely can be used to “structure experience” (36), but one is not necessarily above the other; rather, language and experience are deeply intertwined.
What does all of this influencing mean? Who knows, but if I were Odysseus and I found out I had been immortalized and that my story “belonged to anyone who heard the song” (28) of the muse, I would not cry. I would rejoice at being sewn into history. As the cliché goes, the rest (a guy named James Joyce made famous for writing a 1922 book bearing Odysseus’s namesake, for example) is history. Being a part of the flow of the world’s information, something alive in the world that still writes one’s consciousness into the consciousness of others—isn’t that everything?
Yes, as long as that ‘something’ is good. If you do something nice for someone, if you make someone feel loved and cared for to the point where they feel empowered to use what you have given them to love and care for others, then you may have changed the world for good infinitely. Everything you do that influences someone else, ever, has potential to indirectly influence again and create a chain of infinite scope. The truth of influence and information is (ironically) Emersonian in that its scope cannot always be understood, ranging from success in the meme economy to changing the world.
As a product of the copy-based internet, memes serve as a funny but appropriate example of how information flows in our world today. Many, many people contribute to memes: they take the idea from the world as a copy, add something small to it, and give it back to the world, over and over again. Some, but only some, changes are realized and picked up by others—immortalized in the meme—while others are ignored unless someone picks them up later. The same is true with information in general. It flows like memes. People use it and are influenced by it, change it, and give it back to hopefully influence others. The invention of writing and subsequent invention of the internet inherently allow more pathways of influence, making our world more responsive than ever to flows of information and something like memes possible. Now, catch the right time and get picked up by others, and one could provide the “single precious bit” (16) that will change the world—or at least the world of memes.
