Jumping back into the week with a postcard from Sally Rothchild. Sally says, "All of my stoneware pieces I hand throw on the potter's wheel. This process allows for the subtle variations of shape and form that gives each pot a life of it's own. I decorate the pots with brushed white slip, sgraffito (incised drawings), brushwork ,and a variety of glazes that are poured, dripped, and brushed over the pots. The pots are then fired to a high temperature in my gas-fired reduction kiln. The variable flame and temperature in this firing creates a depth of color, surface texture, and variability that gives the pottery a rich added dimension." Thursday is a wonderful day to express how thankful we are for all of our artists. Today's postcard is from Monica d. Church. Monica says, "I began mashing up collage and painting in the autumn of 2019. Combining layers of paint over and under repurposed pieces of mylar, polyester, thread, tape resulted in pieces that were becoming three-dimensional objects rather than simply flat surfaces. The edges are painted and some as deep as 3 inches. During my time sheltering in place, a painter’s block has interrupted my progress on this body of work. Last week, it suddenly lifted- I understood that the mylar was a barrier, becoming a thin membrane that protects the underlying painting."
