He was best known as one of the key members of the Philadelphia International record label, and was one-half of the successful team of McFadden & Whitehead with Gene McFadden. McFadden and Whitehead wrote many hits for Philadelphia International artists such as The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and had their own hit with "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" in 1979. Whitehead converted to Islam in 1996 and received an LL.D. from Bates College. He was the father of both members of early 1990s duo the Whitehead Brothers. Other hits co-written by McFadden & Whitehead include: "Back Stabbers" (the O'Jays)

Holiday Favorite Flashback
Every week from now until Christmas, we'll revisit one of the many great songs released during the season. The inaugural entry doesn't take us very far into the past...just last year. But it's such a great song, I had to feature it.
The Philly Specials - All I Want For Christmas Is You
youtube
We all know the song (and if we all don't, I have to ask what rock we've been living under) originally recorded by Mariah Carey and covered by tons of artists over the years including the likes of Justin Bieber and Michael Bublé just to name a few. Last year, Jordan Mailata, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson - three Offensive Linemen on the Philadelphia Eagles, recorded a version of it along with a handful of other holiday classics for an album entitled A Philly Special Christmas. Surprisingly (or maybe NOT surprisingly considering Mailata is a classically trained vocalist), it's a really good cover. It's fitting that a city that birthed a whole R&B/Soul movement in the 1970s (McFadden & Whitehead, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and more) as well as more recent acts like Boyz II Men, Jill Scott, Pink, Musiq Soulchild, and The Roots would give us such a soulful take on an already great song.

The legendary R&B/soul songwriting and production duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff started the R&B/soul, funk, and disco label Philadelphia International in 1971 with a distribution deal through Clive Davis' then home, CBS Records. Along with Patti LaBelle's solo successes in the 80’s, PIR was known for being the home of stars, such as Teddy Pendergrass (as well as his former group, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, known for "If You Don't Know Me By Now"), The O'Jays ("Love Train," "Back Stabbers"), veteran Lou Rawls ("You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine"), Billy Paul ("Me And Mrs. Jones"), McFadden & Whitehead ("Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now"), and the house band of the label (and band behind the Soul Train theme song), MFSB. Gamble and Huff's label went defunct in the early 2000’s after a failed attempt to revive the label in the 90’s.

I’ve decided to share one of my favourite CATS videos with you all in its entirety, because I know that a lot of you are very fond of it already:
CATS - La Mirada, California - 2014, April 19th
I’ve converted the video to MP4 to make it one complete piece (while retaining its original quality). The video most commonly in circulation is the one that is missing a file. This is the complete video, and not missing the first part of Act 1. Please enjoy!
Two requests and cast list under the cut:
1. Please do not use this file for trading. It’s been converted from its original filetype to make viewing/downloading easier (and complete). If you are interested in the original VOB files, please contact me.
2. Please do not post this video publicly to Youtube, dailymotion, vimeo, etc. It has already been uploaded here for everyone. It will stay up indefinitely, for as long as I have space. This is for personal enjoyment (and you are free to share the link itself).

John Whitehead
Tumblr media
John Whitehead (July 10, 1948 – May 11, 2004) was an American singer and songwriter.
On May 11, 2004, John Whitehead was murdered. In an apparent case of mistaken identity, he was shot while fixing a car outside his home in Philadelphia. The case remains unsolved. Whitehead was 55 years old. He is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia.
He was the father of both members of early 1990s duo the Whitehead Brothers.
