the bottles are coming back,

and now I unseal every cork with a 'pop',

recalling the days that I sat down to write,

recalling how I bled my heart out over my keyboard;

recalling how tears ran down my cheeks in the 5 a.m. silence within my locked 5 square room,

recalling how much of my heart I thought had gone unseen,

and I unfold these letters in their glass bottles,

unfold them and caress them thumb by finger,

bawl again like a baby.

the bottles came back to me

when I thought they never would

when I thought that there was no one who read them and cared enough to come back

they have been holding my heart gently within their palms

all

this

time.

and how do I say this? how do I say that there is this overwhelming stabbing pain in my chest because someone opened my bottles.

someone pried out the cork.

someone came back to my little bottle and picked it up, someone brought it home to use as a centerpiece,

someone put flowers in with my words and watched them grow,

or they simply drank up the sorrow that I bled for someone to hear in their darkest hour.

my bottles came back.

how can I ever thank you?

look at that lavender house. It's more attic than house, actually, three whole storeys of muslin-draped attic and just the bottom landing remaining intact.

How many things has the tender old world saved up in that attic, with soft footprints, shoeboxes, and delicate tissue paper?

There's a wraparound porch with a rocking-chair on it, and the porch is filled with eye-catching candy plants. You know the usual - peppermint blossoms in their red & white glory unfold to the morning on their vines, chewy blackberry gummies shaped like rock plants in their porcelain saucers, strawberry lollipop roses carved to resemble the rose in 'Beauty and the Beast' (or at least, the Disney version of it.)

look at that window, with frosty snowflakes forming over it in the spring rain. Doesn't it just defy the laws of time, to exist like that?

Windows in this house do not need justification.

There's a front lawn made of water, one rippling koi pond with (willingly donated) turtleshells as a path to put your feet on, solid step after step (you will wonder how it feels so dependable), and a railing made of curly kelp fronds. Should you look down, you might see cute tadpoles made of commas swimming about in it. You remember that whales do not have to be large, don't you? They splash about in this pond (or should I say, lake), playing with the manatees and the little frog ranunculus.
