look i know julian and melora got the low-gravity kiss, all im saying is that jadzia and melora talk about love while “unusually emotional vulcan music” plays in the background while sailing through the stars

Say what you will about Melora/Bashir. I still think they should have done a lady-and-the-tramp kiss with that plate of live worms

There is one thing from Star Trek: Discovery that sticks with me. It's the one crewmember in a wheelchair.
Why? Because in a future where almost any medical condition is curable, being disabled or using a wheelchair isn't seen as something that needs to be fixed.
Does he have a name or a backstory? No. But unlike Pike (ToS), Emory Erickson (Enterprise), or Admiral Jameson (Next Generation), he's not in the wheelchair because of some tragic accident or illness that left them scarred, paralysed, and/or disabled. He's not made the centre of a story of struggle and pity like Melora Pazlar (Deep Space 9).
There's no story of him trying or needing to be "fixed", "healed" or "cured", there's no story of him trying to adapt, there's no story of him getting in the way or being a burden. He's not seen as a tragic victim. He's not seen as unfit for duty or disabled.
He's just a guy in a wheelchair and a member of the crew.
#this is technically called incidental representation#which is representation of people going about their everyday lives#but this means everything to me#if only my thesis were on wheelchair users in literature and media#star trek#star trek discovery#discovery#star trek: discovery#disability#disability representation#wheelchair users#disabled representation#wheelchair

*remembers* Oh right, there are no disabled people in Starfleet.
*remembers Melora Pazlar* Oh right, Starfleet THINKS there are no disabled people in Starfleet. Starfleet ships should have fire-escape stairs with antigrav chair lifts instead of just jeffreys tubes because the turbolifts go down fairly often and what about all the disabled people who don’t matter to Starfleet and oh never mind I get it now.

also this is the guy who opened his restaurant, melora pazlar rolls up with julian, who orders for them, and then when the food comes out she sends it back, complaining in fluent klingon, and he just tosses the plate over his shoulder onto the floor without looking
this klingon chef is hot as fuck

cause everything you heard is true your poor little heart will end up alone cause lord knows i'm a rolling stone so you better run, run, run away, run away, baby
a poster illustration for our form 67-A (as per starfleet health regulation) fanfiction “Dr. Bashir I Presume, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love the Fuck Form” in which julian’s species gets forcibly reassigned and he finds himself tasked with refiling fuck forms for every single species he has ever slept with. and on top of all his troubles there’s that thing with garak... [E-RATED, mind the tags]

Ranking Julian Bashir's canon relationships bc ??? why not
1.) Julian/Melora: Tbh controversial opinion, I think she is one of his best-written love interests and fit him the best in terms of actual personality. She was ambitious, found him attractive and interesting, and was prideful but also snarky and clever. She had her own motivations, life, and interactions with people who weren't him! I think it would have been really cool to see how their relationship could have unfolded given different writing decisions. 8/10
2.) Julian/Leeta: I think they're basically fine, nothing particularly interesting but nothing too terrible either. I take the opinion that Julian himself seems to take, which is that it's fun and it's fine- two people who find each other hot and enjoy hooking up. I never got the feeling that it was particularly "deep," but they had a good time, and I feel pretty neutral about them. 6/10
3.) Julian/Ezri: My other hot take is that Julian and Ezri really could have worked. They're in the same field (healthcare), they work together on Nog's PTSD treatment plan (he backs up her plan but still), she shares interests with him, like a love of reading (she gives him a copy of A Tale of Two Cities which apparently Jadzia had and never gave him even though he's often expressed an interest in literature. Whatever) and they both have complicated family dynamics in similar ways. They both are children of extremely high-pressure parents, and they both left and were extremely firm about it. Like it COULD have worked- the part that makes it hard to actually enjoy is the Jadzia of it all. I would honestly hate it 100% less if they hadn't brought back the Jadzia plot in s6 and referenced it in s7. Also, she's his therapist, which is always a bad look. 5/10
4.) Julian/Sarina: GOD kill it with fire. So bad. So horrible. He sends her back into a catatonic state. Again, the premise is interesting; maybe they could have written it differently. But as far as I can tell, he "falls" for her basically because she is able to help him with his research, she gives him breakfast once, and she makes some good observations about Kira and Odo which. Alright. Apparently, if you want Julian Bashir to be insane about you, all you need to do is be smarter than him and feed him. -1000000/10

There are two Gemworld books, and both are some of my favorite Trek books. They're both heavy on Barclay and Data, as well as Melora Pazlar, a disabled character from the DS9 episode "Melora" that Bashir fell in love with. Gemworld is her home and a nearly no-gravity planet, and that plays a big part in the books because Melora isn't disabled in her natural zero gravity and really kicks ass.
Best of all, there's a scene in the first book where Data is once again being self-deprecating when faced with the ancient elders of that planet, calling himself an artificial being. The ancient replies:
"Nonsense," replied the strange voice. "You are made of elements and natural materials which we know. You are a natural being, not artificial."
And that makes Data happy, and that makes me happy.
Found this book cover of one of the (many, many, MANY) star trek novels that feature our dear blorbo Data yesterday, and I cannot stop screaming and laughing and wheezing at his face. Like what happened here. WHAT HAPPENED? Why is his face...not right? Like, it looks like there was one photo, or perhaps a painting, of his head. And then someone trued to cut + paste his face onto it...but his face is too low and not angled correctly. Or something. It's so creepy/uncanny valley and I keep absolutely losing my shit when I see it.
I think this book came out around 2000, so idk what forms of 'photoshop' we even had back then, but it clearly wasn't up to snuff. And as a result, they did our boy so, so dirty.
(Side note if anyone has read this book and can recommend it lmk. The synopsis seems interesting and gemworld sounds like some steven universe type shenanigans. I could read it if I just. Don't look at the cover.)
