Chapter 07: Flesh In The Teeth
Meliza was huddled up in the passenger seat of the truck as E’thrus sped through the icy roads trying to get back home when their tires suddenly popped and caused their truck to stop moving.
“You have GOT to be kidding me!” E’thrus sighed and gripped the steering wheel so tightly he nearly snapped it off.
“Holy shit, look!” Shouted Meliza, pointing the large fire from the jet crash off into the distance.
“This isn’t our problem anymore.” E’thrus said.
“Oh, but I think it is.” An eerie voice whispered.
“E’THRUS!” Meliza screamed.
E’thrus’ heart sunk as he looked over at her and Slith was standing outside her window. An orange tendril-like hand sprouted out of Slith’s back, shattering the window, yanking Meliza out of the truck.
“MELIZA!” E’thrus shouted as he tried to reach out to grab her but was too late and heard childish laughing echoing throughout the woods headed to the fire.
E’thrus, burst out of the truck and sprinted through the trees like a rabid beast.
***
Johnny, Crevany, and Aevil finally came up on the jet that had crashed. They all circled it and watched as its flames roared into the sky.
“No one’s walkin’ away from that.” Johnny said.
“Looks like some people did though.” Crevany said while pointing at multiple sets of footprints left in the snow leading away from the prison.
“E’THRUS!” They all heard a woman scream and pointed their weapons to the woods.
Meliza was thrown out of the darkness and tumbled through the snow. She quickly got up and screamed. “E’THRUS!”
“Ma’am?” Aevil waved at her. “Who’s E’thrus?”
“YOU!” Voices snarled from behind them.
It was Yinna and Hauxil, but their anger was directed towards Johnny.
“Oh! Hi!” He smiled. “Long time, no see friends! Still got Hughes’ foot on your balls I take it?”
“You should’ve stayed in Suits, traitor!” Yinna yelled drawing her sword and Hauxil bared his claws.
“You know these lot?” Aevil asked.
“Yeah, aha.” Johnny chuckled. “I kind of tried to kill them a few times.”
“Reaper Unit 03: Johnny Jackson Raze.” Yinna said. “Hughes must’ve brought us here to kill you.”
Meliza tried slipping away, but Johnny pulled his gun on her. “Where do ya think you’re goin’ little missy?”
Loud rustling through the trees was heard by everyone.
“Ah, great. More people.” Crevany pouted.
“E’thrus.” Meliza whispered. “KILL THEM!” She then yelled.
E’thrus blew through the thickness of massive pine trees. He was so fast no one could see him move as he headed right for Hauxil. He attempted to move but was not fast enough and E’thrus slammed Hauxil’s head to the ground so hard, it caused a shockwave that swayed the trees.
“Hauxil!” Yinna panicked.
Johnny’s beak dropped. “An enemy Reaper?!” He cheered.
“RRRGGGHHH RGG! RRGGRUN HRNNGGHH! RUN!” E’thrus growled to Meliza, and she did so, darting for their truck.
Yinna attempted to help Hauxil but was shot through the stomach by Johnny.
E’thrus threw Hauxil’s limp body at Johnny, knocking him and Aevil over and ran at Yinna full speed on all fours.
Yinna managed to lift her blade up in time to stab E’thrus through the shoulder, but he took the full force of the impact without hesitating and mauled at her face. She was barely strong enough to keep him off her and felt her ear being bitten from her head.
Aevil managed to get Hauxil’s body off of him and help Johnny back up to his feet.
E’thrus’ ears shot up and he felt wind run pass his chest. He spit out Yinna’s ear and snatched something out of the air. He looked to his claws and saw that it was the fox masked figure. E’thrus squeezed the thing’s head until it popped like an infectious boil, splattering blood, and bits of brain and skull fragments everywhere and its headless body dropped to the snow.
“WHOA! Awesome!” Johnny applauded. “That fucker was a pain in the dick!”
His smile and appraisal slowly faded away however, when E’thrus stepped off of Yinna and starting devouring more of Ghosts’ body. Teeth crunching bones, loud slurping of blood and chewing of flesh put a concerned look across Johnny’s face.
“Ew.” He said. “I hated Ghosts as much as the next guy, but damn boy.”
E’thrus stood up and turned around to see Johnny and Aevil.
“HHHGGGRRRHHH HGGRR” E’thrus started panting and growling with his fur standing up, blood gushing from his maw.
Johnny and Aevil pointed their guns at him.
“Bud. I didn’t take ya girl!” Johnny remarked.
No reason was left in E’thrus’ eyes. He roared at Johnny with a distorted, banshee-like, ear bleeding snarl that sounded like the dying howls of a dozen animals.
“Oh my.” A little girl’s voice spoke up. “Look at how angry you are!”
They all looked up and saw Slith standing atop one of the trees behind E’thrus. E’thrus heard the voice and immediately tried to snatch her from the peak.
“Over here!” Slith mocked, standing atop another tree.
Slith started skipping from tree to tree, luring E’thrus away, leaving Johnny and Aevil alone with the incapacitated Yinna and Hauxil.
“Okay. No. Seriously. What the Hell was all that?” Aevil asked.
Johnny put his hands on his shoulder. “I’ll tell ya all about it in a bit, but uh… you haven’t happen to see where Crevany went did ya?” He asked.
The two looked around and there was no sign of her anywhere where they could see. Turns out, Crevany had sneaked away and was behind the building rummaging through the debris looking for any signs of Deltington being dead with absolutely no regards to the events that just unfolded nearby.
Aevil dragged the injured and bloodied Yinna over to Hauxil and tossed her next to him. Hauxil groaned as he began to try and lift himself up out of the snow before his head was pushed down back into it under Johnny’s talon. “That was quite exciting to witness.” Johnny gleefully remarked. “Where’s Hughes?” He then demanded.
“You don’t ever find him. He finds you.” Yinna said as she sat up and spat blood in Johnny’s face.
Johnny chuckled, wiped his beak off with his scarf and then kicked her in the face, sending her face back into the snow.
***
Branches from pines splintered and shattered into millions of pieces as E’thrus attempted to snatch Slith from where she’d perch herself each time. E’thrus was able to be face to face with her on multiple occasions, but the moment his claws or fangs tried to mangle this obnoxious little bunny, she would vanish in an array of gold, pink and shadow, mocking him from afar on her new footing.
Shvroom. “Ooh, you’re much scarier now!” She mocked.
SSCRASHH! Another tree was met with an untimely strike by E’thrus.
“No matter how ferocious of a beast you’ve become.” Shvroom.
KTSSHHH!
“You’ll always be that lowly matricide.”
E’thrus was in a rage but managed to calm himself enough to speak slightly.
“RRRGGHH YOU’RE RRGGRR DEAD! I HGRR KILL!” E’thrus growled.
Slith sat down on one of the branches. “Please. Darling, did you actually think you killed me? Now that is so adorable. I could just pet you if you weren’t trying to bite my arms off.”
A pendant around her neck began to glow pink.
She smiled and rested her hand to her cheek. “As much fun as it is to play with you, I’m afraid I must get going. Besides, I’m not the one trying to kill your sweetheart. She did grow up to be a beautiful woman though, teehee.”
Slith turned around and a grin ripped open her cheeks. “I can’t imagine how you’d fare to lose her… again…” She whispered and vanished one final time as E’thrus’ claws embedded themselves into the bark where she once stood.
Tears running down his face, E’thrus grabbed a hold of his head and banged it against the tree. He looked up to the twin moons with rage engulfed his eyes.
“HHGGRRR-FUCK!” E’thrus screamed.

Chapter 01: Aura of Intimidation
E’thrus was enjoying his evening off, drinking, and smoking inside his local bar when suddenly the pale yellow and white fur inside his blue jacket stood on end when he sensed aged blood and bleach emitting from the two foreigners that just walked through the front door. Looking over his shoulder, he caught a glimpse of a type of canine with gold fur dressed in a nice blue suit and red tie. Standing alongside him was a panda. He was in a forest green suit and even the black fur surrounding his eyes could not hide the tired bags under them. E’thrus’ large ears could hear the heartbeats of everyone in the building. The Panda’s was beating in irrational patterns while the Dog’s… did not seem to beat at all.
He looked over his shoulder from the other side and the Dog had already taken a seat next to him. He ordered a small glass of water with no ice. E’thrus side-eyed him every couple of seconds before he noticed.
“Black sclera, black claws, slit pupils.” He said.
E’thrus was quiet and tried to find anyone here that possessed these traits to no avail.
“I get comments about my eyes a lot.” He remarked.
“I’d imagine so. You wouldn’t happen to know of an old Crow named Jackson, would ya?” He asked, revealing more of a deep yet elegant southerner style voice.
“No, sorry.” E’thrus said with his fur still standing.
“That’s too bad.” He said and gulped down the rest of his water. “He’s got eyes like yours. Red irises and everything.”
“Interesting.” E’thrus said, huffing his cigarette whenever he could.
The dog got up from his seat and stuck out his hand. “Name’s Hughes.”
“E’thrus.”
They both shook hands, but the black claws E’thrus had, made small cuts on the back of Hughes’ hand. Despite this, no blood dripped out of the wounds.
“Oh, sorry.” E’thrus quickly said.
“You’re good. Mind if I borrow one of your cigarettes though?” Hughes pointed to the pack sticking out of E’thrus’ jacket pocket.
“As long as it’ll get you to leave me alone.” He said. “You’re a little too close for comfort.”
Hughes paused. “Well, that was kind of rude. Seemed like we were having a nice little talk.”
“I don’t know you, man.”
“E’thrus!” A woman’s voice shouted.
“Ah, shit.” E’thrus said and scurried to put his cigarette out.
“He’s right here!” Hughes waved and pointed to him.
A Red Vixen came storming up behind E’thrus and spun him around on his bar stool.
“There you are!” She said in relief. “I was looking for you all over town and…” She stopped and started sniffing his clothes.
“You sneaky bastard! Those are my cigarettes!” She snarled.
“Meliza.” He started. “I…”
“Uh-uh.” She cut him off. “You don’t get an excuse.”
“E’thrus and Meliza.” Hughes said. “You two seem like a lovely couple. Are you married?”
Meliza looked up at Hughes and a dreadful feeling swarmed her. He wore thick rectangular glasses that hid his eyes from her, but she could feel them piercing her soul.
“Who’s your friend, E’thrus?” She asked nervously, quickly swapping eyes between the two.
Hughes straightened his back up and it became more apparent just how much bigger he was compared to everyone else. E’thrus hopped off his stool and put himself in front of Meliza. He was shorter than her by just a couple of inches, but Hughes towered over the Fennec and the Vixen with a vast aura of intimidation. Despite this, he kept his kind and friendly demeanor and put his hand to his heart.
“Call me Hughes, darling.” He said smiling.
“Where’s your buddy at?” E’thrus snapped. “The Panda?”
“Chairman?” Hughes chuckled. “He had to go to the bathroom, so we stopped here at this fine establishment.” He cheered, rubbing the splintery wooden and alcohol stained countertop. “Such a cute little town.”
E’thrus’ fur was still standing, but then Meliza took his hand. He gazed into her eyes, and they said they needed to leave, now.
E’thrus swallowed. “It’s been nice to meet you Hughes, but I’m afraid we can’t stay long. My wife and I have to go home now.”
Hughes was silent before he lifted his chin up and smiled. “You are married! Fascinating.”
“Right…” Meliza whispered. “Come on.” She said and they scurried through a group of drunkards out into the freezing night.
E’thrus could still feel Hughes looking at him through the heavy wooden doors.
Meliza sighed. “That guy was…”
“Someone we’ll never have to see again!” E’thrus interrupted and smiled. “Let’s go home, Honey.”
“Do you know him?” She reluctantly asked.
“Never seen him before in my life.”
Hughes asked for another water, but Chairman came out of the restroom and nodded. He gulped it down and the two found themselves outside. Meliza and E’thrus were gone.
“Sir.” Chairman said. “We should get going.”
“Right.” Hughes paused. “Chairman? That fella I was talking to. Did you get photos?”
“Yes sir.”
“Good. We’ll go see him again after tonight. Did you see his eyes?”
“Reaper characteristics. Is he a rogue agent of yours?”
Hughes pulled a box of cigarettes from his sleeve and lit one. “No. He isn’t.”
“Where did you get those?” Chairman asked.
Hughes shrugged. “I borrowed them.”
The night became dead silent as the two moons of Deta in the sky were crescents and stars glimmered all over. Hughes and Chairman followed a trail to an abandoned prison near the border where the countries of Zonela and Boaka meet. When they arrived at the entrance they gazed upon the morbid building before Hughes walked in first and Chairman followed close behind him and the moonlight faded away. They arrived at an elevator shaft with rusted metal gates sealing the opening.
“I hate going down this thing.” Chairman said nervously.
Hughes pulled a key from his pocket and inserted it inside the panel to the left of the doorway. When he twisted it, ominous green lights above the doorway lit up and the rusted gates creaked open. The platform made its way to them, and they stepped onto it. Hughes reached around and twisted the key again, making the elevator descend into the prison’s basement cells area.
Chairman was carrying a backpack full of camera equipment and held files in his right hand and a weapon crate in his left. As they were descending into the depths, Hughes pulled a deck of cards from his pocket and casually asked. “Wanna see a magic trick?”
“This again?” Chairman said firmly.
“Just pick one.” Hughes snarked.
Chairman poked at the card farthest to the left. “That one.”
Hughes showed him what card he had chosen, folded them back up and put it back in his pocket. The elevator was still creeping its way down and Chairman waited anxiously.
“Are you not going to show me a card and ask, ‘is this your card’?” He asked.
Hughes looked over at Chairman and grinned. “Hmm, nah.”
Chairman starred off into space in bewilderment as they reached the bottom. “That Reaper. He was with a woman. Is the woman one of ours?” He asked.
“Again, no.” Hughes responded and walked down the halls to a security door, entered a code on its keypad and it crawled open. When they entered the cell, there lay a White Wolf, stripped of his clothes, with each one of his limbs chained to the walls. He was unconscious, with dried blood staining his fur.
“Set up the camera Chairman.” Hughes said.
Chairman started setting it up on a tripod, but when he then opened his weapon case, the card he had chosen before lied snug inside the barrel of the weapon. He tilted his head and pulled it out to see the 9 of Diamonds. Chairman raised his brow, stuffed the card into his coat pocket and continued to assemble the rifle. Once Chairman was done, he handed the weapon and its magazine to Hughes and went behind the camera. He gave Hughes a cue with his thumb and started recording.
Hughes walked off camera and came back with a notepad.
“Log: 43.” Hughes said. “Date: 9/20/5252. Location: Stad Genomen, Zonela.
Hughes paused.
“Anomaly exploratory mission number: 17. Transmutation subject: Livik Rudolf Bailee. Species: White Wolf. Site of subject retrieval: Battleground aftermath between skirmish of Zonelan and Boakan forces. Subject faction: Boaka.”
He presented the captive and then looked back at the camera.
Hughes nodded, put the notepad in his pocket and struck the wolf in the chest with the butt of the gun to wake him. He screeched into the cell with an ear bleeding cry and quickly twisted and turned to try and escape his shackles.
The wolf stopped and looked at Hughes with his teary eyes. Hughes loaded the magazine into the weapon he held and pointed it directly at the Wolf. “Evening.”
“Fuckin’ Epsilonians…” Livik growled. “I knew that you nosy pricks couldn’t keep out of this. Listen here you pretentious, self-righteous assholes! Boaka has ownership of the Eastern Central Ocean Bridge, not Zonela or the Faderland Union for that matter! They expanded their borders across our tundra and forests without-.”
BOOM! Hughes Fired a bullet into Livik’s right knee.
“AH FUCK! AH! OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK!” He screamed.
Hughes took the weapon and fired two rounds into his shoulders, making him yell in agony.
“I have no side to this war, son. It’s actually kind of useful.” He said calmly while Livik was still wailing in agony. “Many bodies disappear in times of conflict. Your government’s don’t care about you that’s for sure. One body goes missing and it’s replaced within the week.”
Hughes looked back at Chairman, still behind the camera, recording the torture and then back at the blood oozing from Livik’s wounds.
Hughes looked down at the wolf whimpering about to go into shock. “Only one more thing to endure and it’ll all be over, son.”
He went behind Chairman and pulled out a small vial from his shirt pocket that contained thick orange liquid. He poured it out into the bullet holes put through Livik and it burned his insides. His eyes rolled back behind his head and his body started contorting and twisting. Hughes and Chairman took a step back and waited. Livik’s continuous screaming was then cut short by his spine forcing itself through his mouth. His flesh and bones began to rip each other apart from the inside and reconnect in a way that formed what looked like a hollow doorframe. The orange liquid then crawled up the heap of bloody biomass to the top and began dripping until veiling the opening like a stream, creating a portal with a faint vermilion glow. Hughes slowly crept up to it, placed his hand underneath the waterfalling liquid and smiled.
“How can something so grotesque, be so pretty at the same time?” He asked.
