Liam originated as the nickname of Uilliam, the Irish variant of William. William is an English name from German origin brought to Ireland when the British fled England after the conquest of Norman.

The Irish began to use English names, including William, which led to the development of Uilliam and its short form, Liam.

Liam is the top US boy's name for 2018, joining the elite group of names to top the list. Liam started out as a short form of William but has long stood on his own and for several years has become one of the most popular baby names for boys.

Emma:

Crime drama shows have a bit of everything fans want to see. The drama of solving crime, the gallows humor, and getting attached to the main characters. But there's another aspect to some popular crime dramas that made them memorable: the romance.

As the main characters go through the trial and tribulations of solving cases and costly being around each other, there's likely some romantic tension between them; one that evolves into love. Thus becoming partners in crime-solving and life.

10 Grissom & Sara (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation)

The CSI franchise gave audiences new insight into solving crime by steering away from the detectives and instead toward the inner workings of the forensics lab. In the original series, Grissom (William Petersen) has feelings for his teammate Sara (Jorja Fox). Their on-screen romance was even nicknamed by fans as GSR (Grissom Sara Romance).

Sara was brought in to join the team by Grissom after meeting at a lecture. It was clear they had some sort of relationship early on, but this became more obvious in season four before finally being revealed in season six. Their relationship was rocky throughout the show, yet they always came back to each other.

9 Healer & Young-shin (Healer)

Fans have easily fallen in love with the romance story in the K-drama thriller Healer. The show has gotten rave reviews as it partnered a mysterious "night courier," with impressive combat and hacking skills, with a second-rate reporter. What had fans rooting for the couple was their unconventional romance in the midst of solving murders.

Young-shin (Park Min-young) uncovers the truth behind her dark past leading her to suffer from panic attacks. The night courier codenamed "Healer" (Ji Chang-wook) becomes her protector after being assigned to her by his boss. As they try to solve a 1992 incident along with present-day murders, they fall in love.

8 Shawn & Jules (Psych)

USA Network's Psych became one of cable television's most popular detective comedy-dramas. It strayed away from traditional shows and had a unique storyline. Shawn Spencer (James Roday) posed as psychic and becomes the SBPD's consultant. In reality, he really only has keen observation skills he passes off as psychic.

Juliet, or Jules (Maggie Lawson), is one of the main detectives in the show who at first is skeptical of Shawn. She finds his unconventional ways of investigation bizarre but believes in his ability to help. It soon turns into a romance. Shawn and Jules finally start dating in season five. Their relationship gets messy when Jules learns he's not really psychic; Shawn even considers throwing his gimmick away to get her back. By the end, he proposes.

7 Mac & Harm (J.A.G.)

Fans of NCIS know the show was originally a spin-off of the popular show J.A.G. It revolves around Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. (David James Elliot) and Sarah Mackenzie (Catherine Bell) who work to prosecute those accused of military crimes. It was no surprise the two characters would end up developing feelings for one another.

Throughout the show, there was obvious tension but also denial. Towards the end, they finally open the flood gates. They decide to get married but are at odds end of who would retire from duty. The show ends with a coin toss and fans still don't know the outcome.

6 Maddie & David (Moonlighting)

Moonlighting was one of Bruce Willis' claims to fame as an actor. The comedy-drama was about two detectives solving cases through their Blue Moon Detective Agency. The show starts with Maddie (Cybill Shephard) losing her assets and money and almost selling the agency. David then convinces her not to and instead, they become business partners.

The show was driven by sharp dialogue and sexual tension between the characters. The dynamics were interesting to watch as Maddie was a former model who has a drastic career change; David was rougher around the edges. They would sometimes clash, but they still made a good team.

5 Chloe & Lucifer (Lucifer)

Despite Lucifer being tagged as a fantasy show, it still includes police procedural and comedy-drama elements. The show created one of the more unconventional partnerships that had fans hooked. Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) is through with playing the King of Hell and now lives a lavish life on Earth.

When his friend is murdered, Lucifer meets Chloe Decker (Laura German). He becomes a consultant to the police department and aids Chloe in solving murders all while using his looks, connections, and "what do you desire" trick to solve cases. Their relationship stood the test of time as Chloe learns Lucifer really is the Devil.

4 Jake & Amy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

Fans were enthused to see Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) get together rather quickly in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They have had their memorable moments on the show that were crucial in their relationship. Like when Jake realizes he likes Amy after winning a bet.

The two detectives were opposites who were somehow perfect for each other. Amy was neat, organized, and by the book, while Jake liked to have fun and wing it. Their love for each other blossomed even in the most difficult situations. Like when their wedding is sabotaged but ended up being the most perfect display of what's important to them.

3 Fox & Dana (The X-Files)

While The X-Files was all about debunking and battling the paranormal, it still counts seeing as the main characters went through death-defying situations together to uncover the truth. The show's format inspired plenty of crime series. Alongside the bizarre cases was also a developing romance between Fox (David Duchovny) and Dana (Gillian Anderson).

The characters were on opposite ends of the spectrum as Fox truly believed in the paranormal while Dana stuck to her scientific guns. There was always tension between them, but it took a while for both of them to admit their feelings for one another. Nine seasons, to be exact.

2 Castle & Beckett (Castle)

Who knew a mystery writer and an NYPD detective would make a good pairing? Castle was a popular crime drama starring Nathon Fillion and Stana Katic as Richard Castle and Kate Beckett. Castle is a mystery writer with a serious case of writer's block.

He's brought in for questioning when there's copycat murder using his stories as inspiration. At first, Beckett dislikes Castle's charm and eagerness to help in solving cases for inspiration. Along the way, his abilities as a writer prove useful, and they soon start to have feelings for each other. Their relationship is strained at times due to their stressful and dangerous work, but they make it through and even get married.

1 Temperance & Booth (Bones)

Bones was another crime drama with a unique spin on solving murders. Instead of the traditional forensics team and the local police department, it took a different route. It focused on Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a forensic anthropologist and her team at the Jeffersonian. Along with the aid of the FBI and special agent, Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).

The two characters don't exactly hit it off as Temperance speaks her mind and bases her opinion on facts. Booth is more inclined to the human emotional side of things. As the season progressed, they have a deep understanding of each other beyond being just friends and colleagues. They finally admit their feelings and have a profound relationship. One that even rattles the cage of a certain criminal.

Lower School Prize Giving 2018

Good morning everyone and welcome to our Lower School prize giving. A particularly warm welcome to our parents, invited guests and to Julie Mutton, who will be presenting the awards.

Julie is a former pupil of OLA who, after leaving school, went on to study Photography. She then moved to London where she became a personal assistant to two successful advertising photographers. With fellow OLC pupil Melissa Bones she then set up an agency representing top advertising photographers, organising shoots all around the world from Namibia to the Seychelles and New York.

Clients included Adidas, Mercedes and Samsung, with the photographers shooting famous footballers and athletes, among others. On one memorable occasion, Julie put together an exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall featuring all the official photography for Cirque de Soleil.

After having her first child, Julie moved back to Oxford to be closer to her parents. Here she set up a laser and aesthetic company, Bare UK, which has now been running successfully for six years. Julie has also amazingly managed to complete five triathlons, including one last month at Blenheim Palace. I am sure that you, like me, are looking forward to hearing Julie talk later this morning and we are delighted she has found time to come back to her old school today.

This has been another action-packed year for pupils in the Lower School. Given today’s stifling heat, I am tempted to let you off lightly by cutting out some of my material. There are some things, however, that simply must be said.

In sport, OLA’s U12 and U13 football teams were particularly impressive, winning matches against Christ Church Cathedral School, the Oratory, Kingham Hill, d’Overbroeck’s, Sibford and the King’s School, Witney. The U12/13 Rounders team scored victories over Cranford House, Rye St Antony and Wychwood, while our U13 cricket team beat Shiplake in a thrilling last over finish and went on to beat Kingham Hill and d’Overbroeck’s.

This term, OLA pupils participated in the Vale Super 6 Athletics tournament at Tilsley Park. An excellent team performance resulted in several wins and runner-up prizes in both the track and field events, with some pupils achieving a new personal best. At the Quadkids finals, also at Tilsley Park, OLA finished in 4th place overall out of the 10 schools competing, well ahead of some of our much larger rivals. Isobel Keeble took 1st place in the 100m, while Millie Reid was 1st in the long Jump. In the boys’ competition, Joe Davies came 1st in both these events. As ever, there was huge excitement at Sports Day last week as pupils from our various houses competed enthusiastically to see who would win the competition. Bowyer was pipped at the post by an impressive performance from More, who triumphed for the first time since 2012.

Opportunities for music-making and drama have also been prominent in the Lower School this year. The Silver Band, which is made up of a mix of Junior School and Year 7 pupils, has made particularly good progress. In the Michaelmas Term the band performed at the Beacon Theatre in Wantage and at our own Christmas Fayre. This term there were further performances at St. Michael’s Church in Abingdon and at the Brass on the Grass event in Wantage, with a final concert for parents earlier this week. Our conductor, Sarah Wallbridge, has really moved the band on this year and we are grateful to her for the many hours she devotes to the school.

In February we had the stunning production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to enjoy, directed by Dr Lawson and featuring both the musical and dramatic talents of an array of Year 7 & 8 pupils. Lower School pupils were also prominent at the Christmas Carol Service at St. Helen’s Church, with contributions to both the readings and the music. This week we enjoyed the performances of a number of our younger pupils at the Summer Concert, a fitting send-off to Dr Foster as he passes the baton to Mr Farrow as OLA’s Director of Music.

British Science Week in March was marked by a range of events at the school, including a series of lunchtime challenges in which pupils from all year groups collaborated. There was also a whole school tutor group quiz and a lunchtime Chemistry show, with pupils in Year 7 attending the Big Bang event in Oxford.

In a new development, Scholars in Years 8 created and presented projects on topics of their choosing to audiences of staff and pupils. A team of three school prefects marked these presentations and gave feedback to the Scholars, who were awarded recognition in OLA's Record of Achievement Book. Earlier in the year, all pupils had been given their annual opportunity to listen to and engage with invited authors at the Festival of Reading. This was launched with an appearance by best-selling author Julia Golding, who spoke to both year groups, as well as visitors from local primary schools.

Last week we were honoured to host the launch of Nicki Thornton’s debut novel, ‘The Last Chance Hotel’. Nicki and her husband Mark were for many years owners of Mostly Books in Abingdon and are great supporters of OLA. Nicki’s novel won the Times Children’s Fiction Competition for undiscovered talent and we were delighted that Barry Cunningham, Nicki’s publisher, was also able to attend. Barry is a legend in publishing who worked for many years with Roald Dahl. He was also the man who signed up J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book and launched it on an unsuspecting world. The rest, as they say, is history. Barry was fascinated to see the OLA school magazine that contains our two unpublished Tolkien poems and enjoyed meeting pupils and learning more about the school.

Year 7’s retreat at High Leigh was, as ever, a highlight of the year. There was a Film Night and lots of games, including rounders and football. Pupils participated in teacher-led workshops, with the Talent Show being voted as the best part of the week. I am told that this involved some creative dance moves, beautiful acapella singing and even gymnastics! The fantastic weather ensured there was plenty of opportunity for everyone to relax, unwind and have fun, as well as exploring the spiritual themes that are the centre of every High Leigh retreat.

As you can see, this has certainly been a full and successful year for pupils in the Lower School. The prize giving that follows will underline emphatically the impressive range of our children’s achievements. But of course none of this would be possible without the dedication of OLA’s teachers. I would particularly like to thank the Year Tutors of Years 7 and 8, Miss Gunn and Mr Allen, and their form teacher teams.

Today, as you all know, is a poignant day for all of us at OLA as Miss Gunn will be leaving the school after 16 years. After schooling at Benenden, Miss Gunn read for a Law degree at Exeter University, before qualifying as a solicitor at the College of Law in Guildford. After practising in this profession for 12 years, she took her PGCE at Cambridge and in due course became Head of Religious Education at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire. Miss Gunn came to OLA in 2002 as Head of Sixth Form and then, in 2011, was appointed Year Tutor for Year 7 with responsibility for Transition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Gunn for all the work she has done in her various roles at OLA, not only as a caring pastoral head but also as a teacher of Religious Studies. The first Year 7 she guided into the school are now, amazingly, in the Upper Sixth, and I am sure that all pupils who have benefited from Miss Gunn’s wise and caring guidance will want to join me in thanking her for everything she has done for them in her time at the school.
