THE LAST TREE [dir. SHOLA AMOO] 2019
The Last Tree follows Femi (played as a young kid by Tai Golding and maturing teenager by Sam Adewunmi),a black teenager who spent his early childhood in rural Lincolnshire raised by a white woman (Denise Black), as he moves to London to live with his Nigerian mother (Gbemisola Ikumelo).
PERFORMANCE
With a notable performance done by Adewunmi, he managed to capture both Femi's anger and loneliness.
Ikumelo portrayal however stands out as this struggling mother who's willing to do whatever for her child. Her vulnerability allows the audience to sympathise with her without portraying her as the stereotypical all strict Nigerian mother. She has rules and expects Femi to obey them but by the end you can understand what behaviour she's trying to instil in him.
Black really isn't given much to work with, we see her as the white foster carer who takes care of Femi during his early childhood. While her performance is decent her character is flat, Femi is clearly very attached to her and upset when she promises that he won't have to leave. We know she's sad to see him go and has a good heart but that's it. No opinion on the fact she foster black boys in middle of not very black Lincolnshire or how she attempts to bridge this cultural divide.
WRITING
Speaking of flat characters, most of the characters are. We're really only given time to develop two.
Sam Adewunmi's Femi and Gbemisola Ikumelo's Yinka (Femi's mother). We understand them by understanding their relationship as mother and son.
The rest however are mostly flat with little emotional significance. The girl, (Ruthxjiah Bellenea) who Femi likes, is bullied because she's dark skin but colorism isn't at all explored, one of Femi's friends (Jayden Jean-Paul-Denis) who stands witness to his journey into and out of crime and his character arc, the list is endless.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Stil William's use of wide shots to show Femi changing with the environment as well as close ups on Femi's eyes present moments as eye opening and are very effective. Use of sound effects to help signal change also prove effective with frequent time changes.
FINAL EDIT
7/10.
