A Taste of Whiskey by Melissa Foster

The Whiskeys: Dark Knights of Redemption Ranch

Colorado ranch with heart and hope run by the Western Whiskeys sees daughter Sasha decide it is now or never for her to act upon an interest that has been on slow burn since she was inhigh school. With a no fraternization between employees rule where they work, on the family ranch, being with him is forbidden so how WILL they get together?

The intertwining storylines of various series are fun to read in order or whenever you come across a book by this author. And this time, as always, the lead characters are perfect for one another and do get their happily ever after even though they have waited years to achieve it. The chemistry between Sasha and Ezra is smoking hot. The love they both feel for one another and for Ezra’s young son leaps off the page. The friendship is genuine and has built up over time. Seeing others who I have read about in previous books was nice as was guessing which person will have their story told next. The Dark Knights are closer than family and there for one another as was shown once again when Ezra’s son was in trouble.

Gus was a charming little boy who nearly stole the show. He did not deserve the flakey mother he ended up with but fell in clover by landing on the ranch with his father. I appreciated the way Sasha’s parents allowed their children freedom while protecting them at the same time. The story is all about trust, family, friendship, communication, and deep abiding love. Great story by a wonderful author. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Observando as discussões atuais com temas que versam sobre dignidade da pessoa humana, este ensaio se propõe a uma reflexão através da linguagem peculiar do cinema examinando a relação do Estado de Direito e questões atinentes sobre Direitos Humanos através da montagem de Lock Up – Condenação Brutal, dirigido por John Flynn e estrelado por Sylvester Stallone; desta forma realizando uma intersecção do argumento fílmico com uma breve análise dos temas supracitados.

A trama versa sobre a condenação de Frank Leone preso e sentenciado por agressão aos assassinos de seu pai adotivo. Próximo a concluir a sua pena na penitenciária de Nova Jersey já em progressão de regime, faz jus a liberdade aos finais de semana, que o leva aos encontros com sua esposa Melissa (Darlanne Fluegel) que espera ansiosamente pela sua liberdade, seu personagem opera como uma âncora na vida de Frank, ou seja, é o elo entre dois mundos: o da liberdade e o da prisão, Melissa é o ponto de equilíbrio.

Contudo, prestes a deixar a prisão, Frank é seqüestrado, sem ao menos saber o motivo e, passa a cumprir o restante da pena no presídio de segurança máxima, chefiada pelo Diretor Drumgoole (Donald Sutherland) seu algoz, passando pelas mais terríveis torturas e humilhações. Nesse ínterim eis que o motivo vem à tona: Frank faz justiça com as próprias mãos ao espancar os assassinos de seu pai adotivo, o motivo é a descrença na justiça local corrupta na pessoa do diretor Drumgoole; Frank usa a mídia local para denunciar tal ato, arruinado a vida do diretor que fica sedento por vingança.

O retorno de Frank para o presídio de segurança máxima causa assombro aos apenados, afinal ele é o apenado modelo, sempre solícito com todos cumprindo os seus deveres prisionais. Mas naquele lugar inóspito, o seu equilíbrio seria testado a todo instante através de seu rival Chink (Sonny Landham), um condenado a prisão perpétua, onde o mesmo exerce certa liderança em meio dos prisioneiros.

O cárcere é uma luta pela sobrevivência, em um ambiente hostil permeado por leis próprias entre os presidiários; O filósofo Hegel¹ lembra que “o estado natural é um estado de injustiça, violência, de impulsos naturais bravios, de feitos emoções bárbaras”. Esse conceito do estado natural se traduz na figura destes indivíduos que se recusam a cumprir o “contrato social” dentro da figura do Estado, mas se submetem a adequar-se a homens como eles.  

Este pacto social, na concepção do filósofo Rousseau ocorreria através da forma de uma associação que salvaguardasse a pessoa e os bens de cada associado, nas suas palavras “Encontrar uma forma de associação que defensa e proteja com toda a força comum a pessoa e os bens de cada associado e pela qual cada um, unindo-se com todos, não obedeça portanto senão a si mesmo e permaneça tão livre como anteriormente”².  Esse Estado na idealização do filósofo é o contrato social que salvaguardasse o direitos dos indivíduos dentro de uma sociedade.

Como é notório na primeira cena de conflito entre Frank e Chink – interrompido pelo policial Braden; É perceptível como o personagem de Frank se esforça para manter-se correto dentro deste ambiente hostil, nos limites da sua sanidade e, assim acaba que estabelecendo vínculos com o tagarela Dallas (Tom Sizemore), N.C.N “não confie em ninguém” conselho dado por Frank ao mesmo; com o jovem - Primeira Base (Larry Romano), que acaba se tornando o protegido de Frank, bem como Eclipse (Frank McRae) apenado que trabalha como mecânico na oficina do presídio; conquistando assim a sua confiança, Frank passa a trabalhar no local, afinal é perito em conserto de motores, desta forma a afinidade ali entre homens se forma.

Contudo, quando o condenado se encontra sobre a custódia do Estado, descabe o entendimento que neste lugar onde sua liberdade é cerceada os seus direitos são suprimidos. A prisão não pode ser compreendida com um ambiente de estado natural, neste lugar inóspito os direitos da pessoa humana não podem ser negados ou ineficazes.

Neste modelo de presidiário como Frank, poderia o espectador que o assiste pode ser persuadido a entender uma espécie de “vitimização” daquela população carcerária, entretanto para tal requer um exame dessa perspectiva e, neste tocante requer alguns apontamentos: o filme foi lançado no ano 1989, ainda sob a tensão política da guerra fria; em 1948 foi promulgada a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos, cujo Estados Unidos é signatário; em seu célebre artigo 5º aduz que ninguém será submetido à tortura, nem a penas ou tratamentos cruéis, desumanos ou degradantes. E essa proteção é consubstanciada através do Estado de Direito.

No filme, o diretor e outros policiais que o acompanham o personagem de Frank no tratamento aviltante se revestem do poder da lei para exercer sua própria vingança pessoal, unido a um sadismo absurdo exercido pelo abuso de poder. A cinematografia de Donald E. Thorin (Tango & Cash) denuncia essa tônica sombria do diretor Drumgoole, ao mostrar a cadeira elétrica e seu poder de execução, sendo preciso pela quantidade de executados que passaram por ali; ser desativada, Drumgloore a reveste com um símbolo máximo de poder de coerção.

Outra cena em destaque é a visão dos policiais negros; Frank mais uma vez é torturado e levado para a solitária, quase sucumbindo, os policiais sadicamente o espancam exceto pelo policial Braden (William Allen Young), que através de seu olhar sucinta a perplexidade diante de tamanha imoralidade; Braden se compadece, em seu semblante leva os espectador a refletir sobre a própria condição da população negra naquele país.

Em suma, é inegável a análise da construção do personagem de Frank, revestido do pathos, ou seja, o caráter do protagonista que se amolda ao tema proposto pelo filme, um homem que luta pela liberdade³ e justiça (comumente são personagens personificados pelo ator) marginalizado diante de um sistema corrupto; o mesmo sistema que fora erigido sob o viés democrático e pelo desenvolvimento humano.

Jillian is a successful designer who is very angry at a rock band frontman named Johnny Bad for cancelling the tour for which she was designing the band’s clothes. It is not the first time Johnny does something like this to her and she’s had enough. Jillian manages to get into his hotel room where there’s a monumental crisis. An unknown woman from Johnnys early days with the band got pregnant with his daughter and the band’s manager kept everything secret paying the woman for years. Apart from that, the manager had been stealing money from the record and ticket sales and Johnny found out about his daughter Zoey, who is now 14, and his manager’s betrayal on the same day. To sum up, Johnny needs time to build up a relationship with this daughter he knows nothing about. Zoey is a teenager whose grandmother just died and whose mother doesn’t care about her. So to give them time and anonymity Jillian offers them to stay at her brother’s inn in a secluded spot in Colorado. But Zoey agrees to the plan on the condition that Jillian goes with them. There’s a legend that says that this inn is magic and that many people found their forever love there, including the owners. Will the magic work for Johnny and Jillian?

This is a small town/inn romance with a single parent and in a situation of forced proximity. At the beginning the pace is a little too fast probably to show how chaotic the situation was, but it was a bit difficult to keep up. It felt a bit like the author wanted to tell the small town romance so the introduction or the hotel situation quickly and be done with it. The when the couple and the girl arrive at the cottage next to the inn the pace slowed down enough to start enjoying the book.

Single parent is one of my favorite tropes. The trope in this book is particularly interesting because this father and his daughter don’t know each other and both are very stubborn in protecting themselves. They need a third person, one who is connected to the both of them to help them build bridges and little by little work together to become a family. But with two reluctant man and teenager it won’t be easy for Jillian to help. And to make things worse (or better!) she and Johnny have fallen in lust at first sight. I loved how close both Jillian and Johnny are to their families, to their parents and siblings. Knowing their sweet little stories of their pasts helps understand how wonderful they are as grown ups and how adulthood made them rough around the edges but never crushed their spirits. I remark this aspect of them because it is precisely their inner children, their sweet memories, what will help them find their greatest love for life, for Zoey and for each other. Sharing intimacies they don’t share with anyone else is the key to their love story. Melissa Foster wrote this book in the third person, which is uncommon in contemporary romances, and I liked it this way, it feels less rough, more beautiful and the prose is less direct, more lyrical. It was a wonderful story of found family, the family you choose, but also the family you are born into. It is the perfect mix of the two and the way it’s written is so smooth that it’s heartwarming and kind of cosy-sexy, this term may sound weird or even contrary, but it is what this book is, and it works.

Daniel Douglas Fuller, 89, of Watkinsville, Georgia, finished his earthly mission and was gathered to his people October 31, 2022. A native of Jackson County, he was born May 15, 1933 to William Dennis and Reba Lowe Fuller. He was a graduate of Bob Jones University and pastored four congregations in more than fifty years of ministry: Providence Baptist (Madison County), Moon’s Grove Baptist (Madison County), Briarwood Baptist (Oconee County) and Salem Baptist (Oglethorpe County).

Pastor Fuller’s life was marked by many things: an avid sports enthusiast, he served as team chaplain for football teams in Madison and Oconee counties; he was a sports writer (AKA dandsports) for Madison County and Oconee County; host to seventeen pilgrimages to The Holy Land; a committed friend and faithful benefactor for Penfield Addiction Ministries. When not in the pulpit Dan was often found on the softball field, or the sidelines underneath Friday night lights or on the golf course. He was widely known for his constant and contagious smile as well as his genuine love for people. His probing questions always led to an opportunity to talk about things that matter most – a person’s relationship with Jesus Christ, which he felt was his life’s mission till his final breath. He finished that mission strong!

Pastor Fuller was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Spinks Fuller. He leaves behind four daughters: Beverly (Bill) Chandler, Debbie (Tony) Burnett, Sherri Fuller, Joy (Chris) Miller. He was affectionately known as “Papa” to Danny, Rebecca, Jessica, Melissa, Dennis, Dustin and Heather; and, as “Grand Papa” to Kathryn, Garrett, Gavin, Ella, Caleb, Isabelle, Hunter, Madelyn, Braden, Natalie, Harper, Eliza, Nora, JJ, John Luke and Jacob.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, November 3, 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Lord and Stephens West (Oconee County). A service to honor the life of Pastor Fuller will be Friday, November 4 at 11:00 AM at Briarwood Baptist Church (Oconee County); he will lie in state 10:00 – 10:45 AM. Burial will be at Moon’s Grove Baptist Church (Madison County).

Officiating will be Mike Ricks, Brody Bearden and Matt Wethington. Pallbearers are Bill Chandler, Danny Chandler, Dennis Chandler, Dustin Chandler, Tony Burnett and Chris Miller. Honorary pallbearers are deacons who served with Pastor Fuller during his pastorates.

The family is thankful to St. Mary’s Home Hospice especially the kind and tender attention of Danielle, Veronica, Laura, Crystal and Kimberly to Pastor Fuller during his illness. In lieu of flowers to honor Pastor Fuller’s life, memorial gifts may be made to Penfield Addiction Ministries at 1061 Mercer Circle, Union Point, GA 30669.

Sweet, Sexy Heart by Melissa Foster

The Bradens & Montgomerys: Pleasant Hill – Oak Falls #8

 Opposites or soul mates? Dash Pennington is ready for a break from the whirlwind his life has become. He is taking that break with a friend in a small town before the next step back into the pressure of a book tour when he sees a woman that will change his life – Amber Montgomery. Shy, quiet, controlled, easily flustered Amber owns a bookshop and will host Dash’s debut signing of the tour. Amber wants to maintain her status quo and Dash wants her to change things up to include him in her life. How it plays out is the story within this romance novel.

 What I liked: * Dash: brother, son, ex-football pro, motivational speaker, author, romantic, knows what he wants and wants Amber.

* Amber: sister, daughter, bookstore owner, epileptic with grand mal seizures, warm, giving, controls her environment, smitten by Dash but also leery.

* Reno: Amber’s service dog

* The larger family and interactions among them – some were new to me and some I had seen and remembered from before

* That the story stands alone without having to have read the previous books in the series

* That it was educational providing information about epilepsy

* That Amber did not fall into Dash’s arms immediately – he had to work for it

* That Dash was willing to do “more” to secure Amber’s heart – and romanced her

* That Amber was not as restrained as many thought she was

* That Dash was not the playboy everyone assumed

* That family was important to both of them

* That there was give and take in the relationship and that they communicated, shared, and grew together

* That both wanted the best for the other

* That there was not a long of angst and drama

* The small town feel of the story

 What I didn’t like:

* Not a dislike…just a comment…it was a bit predictable BUT in a comfortable easy fun way

 Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Would I read more by this author? Yes
