Note
do you have any nomad hcs to share? :3
Tumblr media
Heck yeah I do aaaa!!!!
• Since he's you know, a magical scarecrow, his concept of age is wonky. He's lived over 100 years, but he feels a lot younger than that. Aka, I see him as a perma regressor♡
• He is also a v good carer!! He is very attentive to their problems, always trying to help them out, make them feel better in any way that he can!!♡♡♡
• Nomad is mute, so he isn't able to read story books out loud, but he's gotten very good at expressing the story and having his rock friends act out the stories ;w;
• When he's tiny, he is tiiiiny! Like little itty-bitty baby. Everything is new to him! He loves to explore, but only if he's able to see who is caring/playing with him (lil guy has unresolved attachment problems) loooves to observe things like, he's content to watch ants marching over a log or lizards digging into the ground for sand baths!♡♡
• I also see Skout as a tiny (she's a bit more of a middle, kinda in the 7-12 age range) so her and Nomad have lots of playdates!! Skout is very happy to babble on about her ideas and stories, and Nomad is as happy to just sit and listen to her (sometimes she's says stuff he has zero understanding of but, he just happily nods along)
• Also, I know it's illogical for Nomad to have soothers but,,,,he's a magic scarecrow, so maybe this soother is enchanted and just magnetize to the general area where his mouth would be xD
• Nomad still really, REALLY misses Melinda, so sometimes when he's tiny, he thinks she's back or thinks he caught a glimpse of her, but he didn't :( and that makes him very sad. Nothing really can fix that, but hugs do help♡♡

Fics Set in the 1980s Masterlist
A Distant Early Warning (ao3) - andloawhatsit steve/bucky T, 25k
Summary: When the soldier is sent to investigate a decades-old crash site in the Canadian high Arctic, he finds far more than he expected — instead of retrieving salvage, he pulls the plane’s pilot, injured and amnesiac but still breathing, from the wreck.
Curious about the pilot’s fragmented story and strangely hesitant to turn him over to his handler, the soldier pretends to be an officer assigned to the DEW Line and delays his check-in. But the longer he waits, the more he questions the pilot’s identity and his absent handler’s intentions both for the mission and for the American family the man already holds captive, not to mention his own piecemeal memories.
He doesn’t know if it’s a test, a set-up, or a disaster, but he knows he can’t let the pilot go.
A Light That Never Goes Out (ao3) - heyjupiter tony/bruce T, 3k
Summary: It's 1987. There's a hole in the ozone layer, the horrors of Chernobyl are still fresh, and Stark Industries has just been outed as a major polluter. Despite all of that, Tony Stark can't stop thinking about the cute clerk at Revengers Records.
a rainbow tide of rainbow pride (ao3) - arabellagaleotti T, 2k
Summary: Bandanna laughs as they press him against the ground, and Tony opens his mouth and laughs, he's always liked this moment, still riding the adrenaline from whatever stupid thing he’s done but too soon for the repercussions to set in.
OR,
It's 1986, and Tony Stark is at a gay rights protest.
A Sifting Sand and an Electric Hand (ao3) - velvetjinx steve/bucky T, 5k
Summary: 1985. Little punk Steve is always getting into fights with guys bigger than him, and Bucky always seems to get drawn into them. He doesn’t really mind, though. Not considering his big gay crush on Steve. If he could only find the right moment to tell him…
Does Your Father Know? (ao3) - stark-contrast (dweetwise) steve/tony T, 1k
Summary: “Thought I’d come over and say hi," Tony says. "You got a minute?”
It’s like he knows how difficult it is for Steve to say no to him. “I can chat a little, sure,” Steve says.
Or,
MIT Tony crashes a SHIELD party.
do you know what its like to miss you? (ao3) - arabellagaleotti G, 3k
Summary: Did you really think Tony was raised by Howard and Maria?
--
“See you, Master Anthony,” and Tony can practically smell him. Mint and home.
“See?” he says, just to draw out his time a little more, even though his dorm-mother is glaring at him. “I can't see you yet. I’ll hear you later.”
“Alright. Hear you later, Tony,” he says affectionately.
“Hear you later, Jarvis,” he whispers back and the cold click of the phone disconnecting echoes in his ear.
Glory Days (ao3) - glittercake sam/bucky E, 17k
Summary: Maybe there’ll be photos in the papers tomorrow of this exact moment—Jimmy blowing a kiss and Sam smiling the way he is, but no one’s ever gonna know the truth.
And that is: Jimmy Piper’s whole world is up there. He’s never been an honest man, but he means that without exaggeration. Everything he’s got—this car, his house, the stupid thousand dollar shoes, the gold around his neck—he’d give it all up for that man. He’d drop it and never look back. Long as he’s got Sam.
That’s God’s honest truth.
Head Over Heels (ao3) - Akru899 steve/bucky T, 30k
Summary: It's the last day of Summer '88, and the last thing James Buchanan Barnes expected to see was the scrawny kid from school at an AIDS protest. When he sees the kid get punched out, however; well, that's a call to action.
A mostly sugary-sweet 80's AU, complete with track athlete Bucky, shy, skinny artist Steve, Supportive Friend Natasha, and best-mother-in-the-world Sarah Rogers.
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You (ao3) - reviiely phil/melinda, clint/laura, jiaying/cal G, 14k
Summary: Phil and May new agent AU. They pick Daisy up along the way.
First set in Christmas of 1987
I hold this place for your return (ao3) - MedeaV bucky/natasha T, 7k
Summary: Scott Lang is just floating through the Quantum Realm without any hope of ever getting out when he lands to his surprise in a hotel room in 1980's San Francisco, with two people he certainly wouldn't have expected, and sees a chance.
love at first flight (ao3) - captasha_universe steve/natasha T, 5k
Summary: Steve Rogers, a multi-millionaire businessman, discovers what love at first sight is when he sees Natasha Romanoff, a stewardess on the plane, and instantly falls for her.
Redesign Your Logo (ao3) - eruthiel T, 1k
Summary: Alexei Shostakov was not the first Red Guardian.
Secret Lives of Toy Soldiers (ao3) - dallirious, Elekat alexi/melina E, 7k
Summary: Caught up in a moment that would become a cornerstone of history, the Iron Maiden and Red Guardian steal the chance to experience freedom in the chaos.
Team Cap: Quantum Leap (ao3) - roe87 (orphan_account) steve/bucky T, 12k
Summary: Team Cap are on a mission with Ant-Man when they get intercepted by Kang, who sends them all to Los Angeles in 1983 with 'Quantum Leap' style avatars to play an entertaining game inspired by Kang's favorite TV shows.
Can Steve and the team solve the clues in time and get back home, or will they get stuck in 1983?
Two Quarters (ao3) - kenshincha steve/tony G, 1k
Summary: Steve and Tony meet as kids in an arcade.
Wade In Your Water (ao3) - especiallythezefronposter tony/bruce M, 62k
Summary: In 1984, Bruce Banner is reported killed in action after a bomb test gone wrong. A month later, he returns to Caltech university to finish up his thesis.
The Winter Soldier is sent to bring him in.

a snippet from Let Me Speak (a Melinda May character study)
One summer, when the brambles were blooming at their prettiest, the Bartons invited May out to the farm. She hesitated and hesitated, and wasn’t entirely sure why she accepted, but the sun was shining gently outside, and she did. She found herself standing awkwardly in the doorway, a dark silhouette cut into bright, whitewashed walls, and felt too cold for this warm little home, for the welcoming, genuine smile on Laura’s face. There was a dinosaur in the window, scattered legos forming bright spots of color on the carpet, and May tried not to falter in her steps as Clint grinned easily at her and she followed Laura inside.
Conversation was vaguely classified and not quite halting, and in between it all Cooper peered out from beside his mother and furrowed his brow for a second before he grinned in recognition and offered a shy little wave. Lila, toddling and sunny with it, came right up to tap a questioning little hello on May’s knee.
May blinked for just a second before dropping lightly down to one knee, eye-level with the littlest Barton.
“Hi,” she said softly, counting her breaths in some distant corner of her mind, “I’m your Aunt Melinda.”
Lila gave her a considering look, and followed it up with a big, toothy smile. “I know. Auntie Mel! Like the picture!”
May blinked again, her gaze skipping along Lila’s pointing finger towards the mantel before casting a fleeting look up towards where Clint stood lounging against the wall nearby -- Auntie Mel?
It had been a long time since Clint had seen that look, a signature May you-will-hear-about-this-later mingled with something that looked almost…touched, and he almost startled off the wall at the way the familiarity of it struck sharp as a chord.
“Yeah,” was all May said, still soft, the closest thing to a smile Clint had seen on her since she’d vanished behind a desk spreading tentatively across her face, “I guess that’s me.”
She listened seriously as Lila promptly decided that they were friends, and that her new Auntie’s leather jacket was pretty! (Clint snorted out a laugh at that, and the warmth behind May’s eyes grew tentatively brighter.) Lila thrust her deliberate watercolor creations proudly into May’s steady hands as the afternoon wore on, explaining the colors she’d chosen and the landscapes she was depicting, and declaring as a bold aside that she had already decided she was gonna grow up to be a little, tiny, giraffe.
<>
May took herself quietly out to the porch, later, wrapping her palms around the smooth, sanded surface of the railing until they calmed. She stared out across the acres of fields and closed her eyes, aware of the light spilling cheerfully out of the windows at her back, of the way the sky was stretching out above her, open and endless. There were laughing voices ringing out, loud and carefree, and May tried to remember the bright fearlessness in Lila’s eyes.
This safety had been built, claimed, protected -- it had not come easy. It was not meant to. The clouds above her head suggested a storm, but they were soft, even in their threat. A storm might be coming, but it wasn’t here yet, and May wanted to remember this.
There were things worth protecting, a spot of safety in this world that was anything but. Something good, something beautiful, could still come out of all the things she had left to protect. Gray, fluffy storm clouds were intangible in the sky’s infinity, and May wanted to remember the way Lila Barton had looked right at her and seen no reason to be afraid.
The sun was beginning to trickle behind the edge of the horizon when Clint plodded out to join her. He stepped deliberately on all the planks he knew would creak, and settled loudly onto the step nearby, offering an inquisitive sort of silence. May shifted, letting the railing take some of her weight, and Clint waited easily for her to find her words.
When she finally spoke, her voice quiet and heavy and tentative, the words seemed to drop gently into the sea of soft grass below.
“They’re so big.”
The sunset painted the sky in violet and gold. Cooper whooped as something in the kitchen sizzled violently, and beside her Clint beamed.
(Let Me Speak has been my whole heart and brain for months now and is still very much an ongoing project, but i've been itching to share something from it for a while. i will need to factcheck my timelines again (ugh marvel) but this particular scene is meant to take place not long before New York. It was written very early on and i plan to edit it quite a bit, so it's unlikely to look quite this way in the final product, but this scene means a lot to me and I wanted to just put it somewhere in all its unpolished glory :)

Nine mintues to Midnight
by cakeisnotpie
“Well, look at us,” Clint said. “Being all mature and everything.”
Phil smiled and Clint waited for the pang in his chest, but it never came. An echo of loss, a hint of pain, but it was distant, left behind in the emotional upheaval of the years. For a moment, they sat and watched the waves crawl across the sand, letting the breeze ruffle their hair and cool their skin.

Hast Du schon mal von Stiftungen gehört und gedacht: „Das ist bestimmt etwas für reiche Leute, die nicht wissen, wohin mit ihrem vielen Geld?" Keine Sorge, so denken viele Menschen.
Warum so viele Stiftungen?

[CRTICAL YAP SUCCESS]
i think about this all the time!! the brain is clearly the body and the mind is clearly more than just the brain.
like, if you pinch your arm and feel it then that arm IS you, at least a little. but, even if you couldn't feel it (e.g. peripheral neuropathy) it's STILL you, it's just you differently? how can you you differently if it's still the same body?
oh wait. ship of theseus. IS it the same body?
now we're REALLY in the weeds; i'm system (HC-DID) so now u gotta mix in mereology (study of parts and wholes e.g. ship of theseus, paradox of the sand pile). things get even fuckier even faster
how much of the "self" is your mind? how much is your body? if the self has no specific, constant nature how in the WORLD can you have multiple, much less split one into parts? if there's no consistent distinction between the body and the mind, how is it that multiple selves can even "share" the same body?
core theory is essentially untrue and an ancient vedic text called "King Melinda" proved it 2+ millenia ago. we're still arguing about the same old shit anyways.
is your soul what you do or who are you? is your body who you are or what you do? your mind? what is mind if not soul, soul if not mind? if the body and the mind are the same thing (which they clearly are, in degrees) then why does sensation (e.g. sight & sound) happen to you?
I don't really get mind-body dualism. The mind is the brain, which is an organ like any other, and functions (or dysfunctions) of the brain are biological processes. The brain is a part of the body. I don't know why we still make this distinction in modern times.
And, for me, this kind of brings into question classifications based on it, like physical vs mental disability. Are brain based disabilities not physical? Yes, this classification does affect how different conditions are viewed, and that's important to discuss, but that doesn't make the physical-mental disability dichotomy objectively real. It's a social construct, and I don't know how much sense it makes, especially when our issues are intertwined, like physically disabled people being denied care because doctors claim their condition is psychosomatic.
Another classification like this is gender vs sex. Gender is usually defined as the way someone identifies, the way they feel in their mind. But if the mind is biological, then this is biological too, in some way (though we don't know why gender identity exists yet). So is gender just another biological sex characteristic?
Idk idk, just something I'm thinking about.
