I worked for an insurance company as a total loss adjuster. This was back in January.

When a car is totaled, it simply means that it's uneconomical to repair or the state guidelines won't allow for it to be repaired. 90% of the time, people don't want to hassle with jumping through the hoops of getting a salvaged title, handling the car, repairs, blah blah blah, so the insurance company--although not required to--will typically handle the wrecked car for you and move it to the yard and auction it.

Well an inbound call comes in and it's Captain Asshat of the Douchelords (CADL). He immediately starts berating me and is upset that his claim hasn't been paid yet. He had a nice 2014 Benz that was totaled from a collision accident (worth about $30k before the accident) and it was sitting in our salvage yard awaiting the proper paperwork from Captain Asshat.

Me: I apologize for the delays, but it seems that we haven't received your paperwork that was sent to you on [three weeks ago]. Did you receive the packet?

CADL: I received it, but I'm busy! I can't take time to get the documents signed and notarized!! This is ridiculous, why can't you just pay my claim?!

Me: Because the vehicle's final resting place will be in NY, we *must have these documents to be able to properly salvage your vehicle and pay your claim. Plus, we also have to remain in compliance with your state's Department of Insurance (DOI).

CADL: It's been three weeks!

Me: ...again, we need those documents back, signed and notarized to be able to release payment first. We overnighted them to you, and even included a free overnight return label for your convenience.

CADL: You're my insurance company, you have to do it! I won't be bothered to find a notary and ship these docs back to you! I'm a [hotshot job title] I have more important things to do than you, someone who works in a call center!

Me: Sir, we can't sign your name on your behalf, that's called forgery and it's illegal. Look, if it's too much trouble, I can help you find a notary nearby with flexible hours and I'll even call the shipping carrier to help you arrange for the documents to be picked up from your house. But NY does not allow us to circumvent this process.

CADL: No! I already said, this is your problem, you deal with it!

Me: But I can't handle your wrecked vehicle properly and pay you without these docs!

CADL: Well, you'll have to find another fucking way to do it! Hangs up

CADL was represented by an attorney for injuries, so I thought I'd call them to see if they could help. I speak with the receptionist, who was apologetic for CADL's behavior and said he's been a nightmare to work with. He talks down to the staff, is uncooperative, and she apologized numerous times that I even had to talk to him. I explained the situation, and said that I was hoping that even though they're not repping him for property damage, that maybe the attorney could talk some sense into CADL.

"We'll try, but we're not even eager to help him with his injury case because he's such a jerk."

Attorney was unsuccessful in getting CADL's cooperation, so I had no choice but to return his damaged, inoperable property back to him.

I schedule a tow truck to move the wrecked car back to CADL's address on file.

I check back on the call log the next day and sure enough, CADL's wrecked car had been moved back to his home parked in the common driveway, immobile and without keys. 😂 Blocking his roommate's vehicles in, might I add.

CADL has called in a total of 7 times to complain, escalate, and get the vehicle moved. One inexperienced rep tried to move it but I was monitoring the file and cancelled her tow. CADL called in several more times and each adjuster's notes referred to my documented account of how uncooperative he was and refused to take the vehicle back until we got his docs. CADL stated that the address on file wasn't actually his, it's his landlord's house where he rents a room and he needs the car moved! His landlord wasn't happy and was threatening him with legal action! Another adjuster told him that we will no longer use our resources (towing, salvage yard, etc.) to help him with HIS wrecked vehicle and that HE caused this mess by simply not sending the required docs back. If he needed the vehicle moved that desparately, he would have to pay to tow it and store it at his own expense.

As I mentioned earlier, insurance companies are not required to handle the vehicle in most states. It was CADL's property and in order to indemnify him we did still owe him a good chunk of his $30k. Since he opted to essentially "keep" the vehicle by way of not cooperating, we must also deduct the salvage value of his wrecked car (this represents the amount we anticipated to receive for the wrecked car at auction). That was a whopping $8k of his $30k settlement! So not only did he have a wrecked car sitting in his driveway, now we've also reduced his settlement by $8k.

Not more than a week later, we got his documents back, but it took another week after that to get his vehicle picked back up. Since we were now in possession of the vehicle, we also did pay him his full settlement in the end but he ate the costs of moving the vehicle around unnecessarily.

Car accidents suck, I get it. We were trained not to take things personally, and I often get the brunt of peoples' frustration all day, every day. I am empathetic and try to be as helpful and accommodating as possible because I'm human. A total loss can definitely turn things upsidedown. 99% of the time, I can de-escalate someone and it doesn't turn out this way but there's always that one person who has to act like a jackass.

Bubble tower for surge/fuge plumbing

FWIW, the bubble tower I’m planning will look something like this (next to the 66″ weir to the right of it), note the eurobracing is visible around the top perimeter.

I’ll build two identical panels of black acrylic with several routed cutouts near one end (bottom) and join them at a 90deg angle so they form a pseudo-box when pressed against the corner.

Using thin glass (maybe 1/4″, no more), form a 4″ tall corner at the bottom, enough to hold the sand out of the tower and hold the acrylic in. Do the same at the top with 6″ pieces. properly silicone these in. Make one of them (away from the weir) stop 1-2″ below the weir so excess water can rush out the top.

Cut a little extra acrylic to sit at the bottom of the tank, just inside the bottom glass box, just to keep the main box raised up about 3 inches.

When I need to clean, I can lift the acrylic up a couple inches and pull the two acrylic pieces outward, then lower it again until it is free from the top glass and I can fully remove it. I may need to push some sand out of the way, but shouldn’t be too bad.

Anyways, this way water can rush in from the surge (trickle in as the fuge), any air that comes through that pipe should tend upward and not into the main tank, this should also keep critters out of the pipe (since it will usually be pretty slow flow). I’m planning 4 slits per side, probably 1/4″ x 3″ (box is 4″x4″), which makes for 6 square inches of opening (plus the section at the top), which is about double the area of the 2″ pipe I’m planning to use.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (SPOILERS)

I see a lot of hate towards Maleficent 2 that recently came out, and frankly I’m shocked at it. While the movie wasn’t as good as Maleficent 1, it was so far from bad it’s not even funny. The effects were beautiful, the depth/message was great (though Aurora lost my respect for a while there.... *side eyes*), the outfits were terrific (when Maleficent had her hair down... DAAAAAYM), the white Dark Fae (reminded me of Legolas from Lotr for some reason) was fantastic (I want more of him)... And that... moment towards the end of the movie? The one that made my tears stream down my face? You know what scene I’m talking about if you’ve seen the movie (I seriously wasn’t prepared!). 

Of course there were things I didn’t like, like for example the lack of Diaval. I didn’t like that Diaval, Maleficent and Aurora were apart for the bigger part of the movie. I didn’t like that so many Dark Fae died. I didn’t like that Diaval and Maleficent barely got any scenes together, HOWEVER the scenes they got were good. Loved those looks they shared... I also wanted more though from the movie overall. I didn’t like that in the end, when Maleficent was flying, Diaval wasn’t by her side. 

That being said, my sister (23) absolutely LOVED the movie. Thought it better than movie one and that it was one of the BEST Disney movies ever made. I myself, truly liked it (while I LOVED movie one). I’m praying that we’ll get a Maleficent 3. I seriously do hope so. I’m not ready to say goodbye to my dreams of Maleval becoming canon. So I kinda hope that IF a third movie will come, then it’ll be will Maleficent learning believe in love again, and finally open her eyes to the one who’s loved her from the start. Perhaps a little love triangle to make some drama and comparison between Diaval (true love) and for example Borra. Perhaps Maleficent will feel that she would need to be with someone from her kind, so she’ll feel pressured to be with Borra, rather than who her heart truly wants... well, something like that. I just hope Meleval will happen.

Anyways, that’s my rant for today. I’ve used two-three days to process the movie, and this is what it came to. THE MOVIE IS SO FAR FROM BAD, that I kinda get sorta upset over all the hatred it seem to be getting. Sure, it could’ve been better, but it was still very good.

The Faceless Nursery: Chap 2. Gordon’s home.

Up the hill, there was the house. The Bentley was parked outside as Ghastly Bespoke walked out, he looked tired. He had looked tired ever since Ravel had betrayed them. Wouldn't you be tired if you carried the head of your dead companion all the way home? Valkyrie ran out and hugged him. He chuckled as he hugged her back. Skulduggery's face melted away as he walked to them.

''Have the others made it?''He asked, Ghastly nodded. Tanith Low, Dexter Vex, Saracen Rue and China Sorrows. Valkyrie smiled, at this time. At least China could make it. China smiled at her,she was wearing a blue suit and black high heels.

''Hello dear Valkyrie, you looked shaken?''She asked, Valkyrie nods as she looks up at Skulduggery.

''We dropped off Alice on our way here.''He started off, Ghastly cut him off, ''How does she like the dress I made her?'' Skulduggery dipped his head, ''She loves it.'' Ghastly smiled and nodded at this. Saracen scratched the stump where his arm once was. He lost it in the fight against the Black Cleaver and Erskine.

''I'll let Valkyrie explain.''Skulduggery gestured to her, she nods.

''Mevolent is alive.''She put it bluntly. They all froze, as they stared at her, ''And he's a daycare worker at Alice's daycare.''She added. Dexter raised his hand as his voice croaked.

''But, how and why?''He asked. Valkyrie shrugged, ''If I knew we could tell you.'' China looked down, ''It can wait till after. Today we mourn, we can plan after.'' They all nodded in agreement. Tanith and Dexter went to the kitchen, to get the flower arrangements. Valkyrie stood there, as Ghastly joined her. He patted her back.

''So, how's your... Little friend.''He asked, she froze and nodded. She had forgotten she had told him, it was a month ago and she was drunk and upset. Valkyrie glanced at Skulduggery, who had no clue of her secret.

''She's good. She wants to resurrect Ravel so she can kill him.''She explained, Ghastly nods as Valkyrie remembered it slowly. She was so drunk that today. Tho' it was Ghastly that had made a new name for her. Jess, a new name for a new entity, but had its roots in Darquesse. Since, Jess sounded like 'Quesse'. She had been quiet today.

''To be honest, I agree with her.''He chuckled, Valkyrie smiled and nodded.

''So, how did you and Tanith's date go yesterday?''She had to ask, it was close to their anniversary of dating. Ghastly seem to blush and melt at the mention of this, he placed a hand on his cheek as he smiled, ''Wonderful. It always is with her.''

Valkyrie almost laughing, but her heart felt to heavy to let that bounce of her chest happen. Tanith walked out, carrying a large flower arrangement with Shudder's photo sat on it. Then Dexter with another one. The march was long, down the path. It was quiet, Ghastly and Skulduggery led the march. Valkyrie was in the back with China. They reached the lake, and slowly they pushed the arrangement in to the river. Valkyrie finally let the tears fall. China wrapped an arm around her, holding her close. Tanith was quick to hug Valkyrie as well. She and Tanith cried together, Skulduggery slowly approached them. He placed a hand on both of their backs, rubbing slow circles along it. They cried all the way back, Ghastly made hot chocolate as Dexter and Saracen went about telling stories of the old days of the dead men. Soon the hot Chocolate was halfway empty, and the talk went to the warlord.  As they spoke, not even China knew he was alive.

''So, what do we do?''Tanith asked as she leaned back. Ready for a fight. Valkyrie looked down.

''It wasn't as healthy as the other Mevolent. His a bit chubby, which means he isn't fighting anyone anymore.''

Ghastly nods, ''Daycare is a weird choice to work as, how did he get there?'' Valkyrie frowned, ''The daycare is a mortal one, so no one would know who he is. Plus, he didn't know me. Which means he's completely dropped out of the magical community.''

''Your going to pick up Alice, aren't you?''China asked, ''Go talk to him.''She explained. Valkyrie looked at Skulduggery.

''Tanith, your going with us. He won't know you either.''Skulduggery grabbed his car keys. Valkyrie looked at the others. This was not how she wanted to spend Shudder's birthday. But she stood up and followed them outside, she sat in the back of the Bentley and waited for Skulduggery to start the engine with a horrid gut feeling.
