So, I just came up with this?

High school

Melchior and Moritz are best friends, canon compliant. Melchior teaches Moritz how to masturbate, all that gay shit.

He's also an ignorant, self-absorbed ass and fuckboi™, who doesn't believe in love, fucks Wendla and probably half the school while he's at it. Lots of pining on Moritz's side.

Moritz doesn't kill himself but he's still got enough mental health and general issues so dating isn't really his top priority, and they wouldn't have worked out anyways, not now.

Hänschen Rilow is the Draco Malfoy to Melchior's Harry Potter. He's even got the hair. The two of them are like fire and ice, always competing, always opposing each other, but never going into direct confrontation. Hänschen has fucked at least the half of the school that Melchior hasn't.

Everyone has had a Melchior Gabor phase or a Hänschen Rilow phase, many had both. Even the two of them, dating for a while in junior year but breaking up because they kept fighting and cheating on each other.

Hänschen seduces Ernst at some point, but breaks his heart because he's a fucking player who gets off on that shit.

College.

Moritz and Ernst are dating. They're both not really over their respective best friends breaking their hearts in high school but they're kinda bonding over that and really happy together.

Melchior still doesn't believe in love, which is why he doesn't realize how far he's gone for Moritz and why him happily dating Ernst bothers him so much. (He claims it's because Moritz is conforming to society's standards and expectations, but honestly, he's jealous.)

Hänschen has realized that he actually does care for Ernst but since Hänschen Rilow Doesn't Have Feelings nobody may know. He's still himself though, fucking everyone and their father, competing with Melchior more than ever. ((gimme competitive exes pls))

Eventually the two of them (Hänschen and Melchior) end up fucking again, while Moritz and Ernst are still pining (now also feeling bad because of each other who they love a lot).

Then, at some point, probably at a party (Wendla and Ilse getting engaged? Idk, idc, I've still gotta think about how to include the girls), Hänschen fucks Moritz and shit hits the fan.

Melchior breaks Hänschen's jaw when he finds out.

Ernst is heartbroken. Obviously because his boyfriend cheated on him, but even more so because it was with Hänschen. He wouldn't have minded that much if it had been Melchior because he's not blind, he knows about Moritz's everlasting crush, but Hänschen? He does understand it, but he's also really hurt that they didn't invite him; that Hänschen didn't fuck //him//.

Moritz is drowning in self-hate and regret. He contemplates killing himself again. Then he hears about how Melchior broke Hänschen's jaw and confronts him about it. They have a long talk that ends in tears and cuddles because Moritz is not cheating on Ernst again. (Also Melchior can really use someone denying him for once. He does respect Moritz's choice there, yay for character development)

The next day, Moritz goes and makes up with Ernst. He apologizes, Ernst forgives him, and they talk it out, all of their emotional issues that they've known but never spoken about. They discuss non-monogamy and come to the conclusion that they don't want an open relationship but would be cool with the other also dating their respective crush/best friend.

Moritz calls Melchior over and the three of them talk even more. Melchior and Ernst don't have romantic feelings for each other (yet) but they both love Moritz a lot so they agree on a poly v.

Ernst is still down because of Hänschen, and because Melchior loves Moritz and Moritz loves Ernst, Melchior goes to talk to Hänschen again to fix the thing and make Ernst and thereby Moritz happy.

He apologizes for breaking his face and almost ends up getting fucked against a wall. Almost, because he lets slip that Ernst is still crying and Hänschen cusses and leaves to fix what he's broken.

There's a moment of awkwardness when he shows up at their door and Moritz opens it but they work it out. Hänschen's still an ass and a sadist, but he finally admits that he cares about Ernst and they'll find a way.

So now there's kind of a poly square, which eventually turns into a complete polyship once Melchior and Ernst, and Moritz and Hänschen fall for each other. Things just go their way, getting cute and domestic and it works.
