Women with a high omega-3 status are up to 20% less likely to die from any cause, compared to those with low levels of DHA and EPA, finds a new study.
The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, looked at associations between omega-3 index scores - a measure of EPA and DHA levels in red blood cells - and all-cause mortality rates in a population of postmenopausal women over a 15 year period. 
Women with the highest omega-3 status were found to be 20% less likely to die from any cause than those with the lowest omega-3 levels, said the team.
"This is the largest -but far from the only - study to confirm that blood levels of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, in this case the omega-3 index, are independent predictors of risk for death," said Dr. William Harris, lead author of the study and founder of OmegaQuant Analytics, where the samples were analysed. "These findings support the view that higher EPA and DHA omega-3 levels are associated with better overall health."
"This study adds to a larger body of evidence demonstrating the positive correlation between higher omega-3 index levels and general wellness," said Adam Ismail, executive director of the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED). "The results gathered over a 15-year period support the notion that adequate omega-3 intake is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, just like exercise and following a well-balanced diet."
The team also reported that higher levels of EPA were found to have a significant inverse relationship with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) death, but the same was not found for DHA. 
Researchers concluded in their study that two and a half fillets of salmon each week provided an adequate amount of omega-3 PUFAs to be considered a safe high amount. They said that estimated intakes suggest that approximately 1g of EPA and DHA per day would be required to increase omega-3 status for those in the lowest omega-3 status group to a levelwhere they were in the highest group. This amount also translates to between one and three softgel omega-3 supplements or one teaspoon of a liquid omega-3 supplement daily.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, used brain imaging techniques to detect activity in the brains of 24 participants, while taking part in a maze task.
As part of the experiment, participants were asked to make a series of choices between shapes in order to reach rewards.
Each shape would lead down a different path made up of a sequence of pictures, followed by reward points at the end. The participants' goal was to keep track of the best path, because the reward points at the end changed over time.
The results showed that when it was most helpful to think ahead, participants replayed memories of previous experiences before making a choice.
Interestingly, replay events were very fast—completing a path in a fraction of a second.
The results demonstrate how replaying experiences at different times can relate to two separate cognitive functions. However, both effects were related to increased activity in regions of the brain, including the hippocampus, which is crucial for memory.
Lead author, Dr. Elliott Wimmer (UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and The Max Planck UCL Center for Computational Psychiatry and Aging Research), said, "Our research found that replay may aid both key mental abilities, decision-making and memory, but at different times.
"When it's time to make a decision, replay focused on the task at hand, supporting a role for memory in planning. But during more idle periods, replay was stronger for previous memories, which may help sustain old experiences."

Why do all living organisms in the three domains of life -- archaea, eukarya, and prokarya -- all synthesize and utilize melatonin for possibly well over three billion years?
A new peer-reviewed article offers a glimpse into the vast, untapped world of phase separation where prion-like domains play critical roles in the organization and promotion of life at the most basic genetic, molecular level [1].
The authors reported that the "NANOG prion-like domain assembly is essential for specific DNA recognition and distant chromatin interactions". That means NANOG's ability to form prion-like assemblies via phase separation is the key to the cooperative and concerted DNA bridging mechanism that is essential for chromatin reorganization and pluripotency.
Since September of 2021, I have published two ground-breaking papers co-authored with the esteemed Dr. RJ Reiter on the ability of melatonin to not only regulate biomolecular condensate phase separation, but also exert regulatory control over physiological, pathological prions, and prion-like domains [2,3].
According to the current report on prion-like domains of NANOG, the ability to easily phase separate and form condensates is most important during early stages of pluripotency programming [1]. Thus the ability of melatonin to regulate LLPS to promote optimal condensate formation and prevent aberrant aggregation is potentially the holy grail to health and disease.

It's been 12 days since I had to say goodbye to my cuddle buddy, Leo. To be honest, it's been hard to sleep since the 4th. Whenever I would go to sleep or even to just lay on my bed, my cat Leo would always join me. He would always be at my side and not having him next to me as I sleep and wake up, even though out the day, makes it really hard to want to sleep. I use to burst into tears just walking into my room cause Leo wouldn’t be on my bed sleeping. I mistake my other black cat for Leo and I get hopeful for a slit second but end up crying more. I'm usually in tears in bed trying to sleep and then just tossing and turning until early morning, stuck in that part of sleeping but not really. I'm aware I'm not technically not sleeping. I had to start taking melatonin and other stuff just to have decent sleep for work. It just feels like I lost a part of my heart. I know Leo is a cat and some people may think I’m overreacting over the death of a cat but hes a cat I had since he was born, 10+ years, through my high school years, I took care of him when he was the smallest of his liter and helped him walk when his lil legs weren’t developing correctly, he was always so affectionate with me and vocal when I would stay up too late. Its just hard to have someone for 10 years and suddenly have to say goodbye. I feel like I didn’t give my baby a fighting chance but at the same time would I have just made his life harder to live just for a lil more time? It would of just been harder to say goodbye especially after seeing him so limp just trying to take him to the vet, I don’t think I could handle seeing him getting worse and worse over the time and nothing like the eager baby I know he was. Cancer really does torment the loved ones in my life. My first dog Goofy died from cancer/ a tumor, my aunt developed lymphoma cancer and got it back again after being cleared of it, my mother developed breast cancer but thankfully they're both okay now, my uncle is currently having his own cancer scare, and Leo died of blood cancer. I was bad when my dog died but I'm worse now. Leo was solely mine, unlike Goofy, he was the family dog but Leo was mine and only mine, he was literally my child and I had to say goodbye so much sooner then I expected. I keep having flashbacks to a certain part of that day and it absolutely breaks my heart every time it keeps showing up in my head and I start crying again even though I been getting better about trying to not cry so much. I guess I got a lil traumatized by this?  
I miss my baby.
I been saying that a lot and as much as it hurts me to not have my baby with me anymore, I know hes in a better place. A place he can have all the room to run and play, eat all the treats he wants, a place he can be warm. I wouldn’t have wanted him to feel like garbage his last days just for his possible treatment to not work. I’ll see my baby again, in the meantime he can play with all my other fur babies that have passed on as well. I hope they’re all playing nice. I’ll feel better eventually, its only been 2 weeks soon, I’m allowed to still be upset. I’m tired, and going through my days slowly, I don’t feel as bright as I use to be but I’ll get there again I just need time and my lil times to myself to cry for my baby a bit more. 
I won’t lie, seeing all the great press Sonic 2 is getting really makes my heart warm and helps me feel better. My childhood self is so happy to see so much Sonic excitement now haha. 
I miss my baby.
