Or maybe it’s simply down to the time spent online that is enough to be treated as an addiction. These are hard questions. Scientists concluded that it demonstrates how Internet search engines make us use less of our own intellectual resources, and instead we’re tempted with an idea of an easy access to information.
In this way technology causes us to remember less. But at the same time, it teaches us the strategies to successfully search for whatever information we need. We may not store it in the memory, but we improve our memory of where to find it.
And the question remains. Are these really drawbacks, or maybe the winds of change? Similarly, the solution to all the issues above seems to be encompassed in a single word: balance. The balance of ‘when, how much, what for’. Perhaps healthy scheduling, with a variety of different online activities could be the answer to parents who struggle with teenagers who spend hours in front of their computers. Probably we should think how to advance them so that they serve some wider educational purposes, still being as much entertaining and engaging. Maybe teenagers made more aware of these issues, presenting with fair information (not only that gaming is evil), could make them balance themselves and start using technology for appropriate purposes. This blog is not supposed to be moralistic, but if I was to claim one thing I personally believe, it’s that forcing teenagers to do or quit doing anything would rarely result in anything valuable.
